Kate, a student in 8th grade, asked lots of questions in math class-until the teacher told her to stop. “He said I was confusing the other kids with my questions,” she recalled. “When boys asked questions, he took them a lot more seriously.”
You might have thought that such obvious forms of discriminations (歧视) had ended by now. But Esther Greenglass, a psychology professor at York University in Toronto, says many recent studies have found that girls may still be faced with mixed messages about self-confidence and success, which can lower their self-esteem and discourage them from achieving their potential.
The problem worsens at about age 11 or 12, when girls start hitting puberty(青春期) and discovering boys. Many girls’ grades drop, and so does their self-esteem. “Girls get the message that, if you’re going to be popular, you can’t be too smart because they boys won’t like you,” says Greenglass, who has written extensively on sex roles and discrimination.
Often, girls also sense that boys are considered more capable. In studies in the United States, researchers found that when teachers asked questions, they almost always made eye contact with boys, unless they had attended courses raising their level of awareness. Adding to the problem, according to Greenglass, is the lack of female role models in old textbooks still found in many Canadian schools.
How are girls’ attitudes affected? Studies have shown that boys usually attribute their success to their superior ability, while girls attribute their own success to luck. When boys fail at a task, they tend to blame it on external factors; when girls fail, they blame their own lack of ability. Boys are more likely to try a second time to succeed.

The fax machine, computer, modem, paper, and cell phone are making working at home more and more practical for some jobs. AT&T estimates that approximately 16,000 of their employees work at home. Self-employed individuals, sales workers, managers, and professionals are the most likely to work at home. Blue-collar workers are much less likely to work at home. Of course currently working for compensation at home, only about half work there for eight hours or more per week.
It may sound idyllic(田园诗般的) for a mother to work at home, thereby combining work with family care. However, it is not easy to do. A Work space as well as time must be created for working. With small children, attention is constantly demanded. Thus, even when working at home, it may be necessary for there to be child care or some kind. The family members must realize and respect the work needs of the family member working at home so that there is not constant disruption. There are costs involved such as buying the devices necessary and maintaining communication lines with the office. Despite the difficulties, people like Craig McCaw, the founder of McCaw Cellular, see working outside the office, yet remaining in constant contact with the office, as the wave of the future.
As with any changes, there are conflicting viewpoints. On the positive side, workers gain flexibility and better control of their time. Home-based work allow family members to care for children or elderly or disabled relatives while participating in the labor market. In fact, mothers and fathers with preschool children tend to be the most positive about working at home. Home-based work also makes the
