Scent of a Woman - A ReflectionWalking into a room, a familiar scent wafts through the air. It triggers a cascade of memories and emotions, taking me back to a particular moment in time. Such is the power of fragrance. The association between scent and memory is undeniably captivating, invoking a complex array of feelings that can transport us to another world. The notion that a scent can define a person is not at all far-fetched. In fact, the idea of "scent of a woman" has been immortalized in literature and cinema, encapsulating the essence of femininity. Whether it's the heady bouquet of roses or the musky notes of sandalwood, women have long embraced the power of scent as an extension of their identity and a means of self-expression.In the 1992 film "Scent of a Woman", directed by Martin Brest, Al Pacino delivers an unforgettable performance. He plays the role of Lt. Col. Frank Slade, a blind, retired army officer who embarks on a journey with a young man named Charlie, played by Chris O'Donnell. Through their shared experiences, the film explores themes of friendship, personal growth, and the inherent beauty of life. One of the most captivating aspects of the film is Lt. Col. Slade's acute sense of smell. Despite being blind, he navigates the world with great confidence, partially due to his ability to discern scents. His olfactory prowess serves as a metaphor for the way in which we perceive the world around us. It reminds us that there is more to life than what meets the eye – that our senses, including our sense of smell, can unlock a deeper understanding of our surroundings.Throughout the movie, the scent of women plays a significant role. Lt. Col. Slade's ability to identify and differentiate between the perfumes worn by different women adds depth to his character. It is almost as if he can "see" a person through their fragrance. This notion resonates with the idea that scent can evoke powerful emotions and memories, serving as a window into a person's soul. The significance of scent in the film extends beyond individual characters. It also symbolizes the allure and mystery of women in general. Just as each fragrance carries its unique aroma, women possess their own individuality. The film suggests that by taking the time to truly understand a woman, we can appreciate the intricacies of her character, much like deciphering the complexities of a perfume.Furthermore, "Scent of a Woman" highlights the transformative power of experiencing new scents. Throughout the narrative, Charlie undergoes a personal journey, evolving from a young, naive student into a man with a newfound appreciation for life. This transformation is catalyzed by his encounters with different women and their respective fragrances. Each scent serves as a catalyst, pushing Charlie out of his comfort zone and exposing him to the vibrant tapestry of life. The film's exploration of scent goes beyond the superficial. It delves into the deeper connection between scent and memory, the way in which a fragrance can transport us to distant places and resurrect long-forgotten emotions. There is something undeniably enchanting about encountering a scent that evokes memories of childhood, a loved one, or a significant moment in time. It is as if time collapses, and we are transported back to that very moment, experiencing it all over again. As my reflections on "Scent of a Woman" draw to a close, I am struck by the profound impact that fragrance can have on our lives. It is a lingering, intangible presence that we carry with us, a reminder of who we were, who we are, and who we aspire to be. Just as each perfume tells a story, we too are the authors of our own olfactory tales. In conclusion, scent is a powerful tool that can shape our perception of the world and influence our emotions. It adds depth and intricacy to the human experience, connecting us to our past, present, and future. "Scent of a Woman" offers a compelling reminder of the beauty and complexity of life, and how the fragrances we encounter along the way contribute to our ever-evolving narrative. Let us embrace the power of scent and allow it to guide us on our journey of self-discovery.。

My review on Scent of a Woman英语103班焦文娟30号Scent of a Woman tells a story between Charles Simms, a student at a preparatory school, who comes from a poor family, and a blind hard-drinking ex-army colonel, Frank Slade. All this film revolves around a dilemma which Charles faces and a pessimistic decision the colonel has made in his mind. The story begins with Charles, who wants to earn some money for his flight home to Gresham Oregon over Thanksgiving weekend, works as a weekend companion to the retired colonel. At the same time, he is involved in a big trouble at school--he and his friend George witness a gambado that their friends mock the headmaster. The headmaster is so annoyed that he forces these two students to reveal the identity of the trickers. After threatening them he makes a private conversation with Charles and tries to bride him by assuring his admission to Harvard in order to gets information from him, but Charles tells nothing. Meanwhile, Colonel Slade and Charles begin their trip to New York City, where they has a wild and unforgettable weekend that changes the lives of both men forever. Eating at fancy a restaurant, staying at an amazing hotel, dancing and sleeping with a beautiful woman—those are the colonel’s plans. Besides that, Charles finds shockedly that the colonel has one real intention in thistrip—to commit suicide. Luckily, during the two days’trip, all the problems are solved. Finally, Charles is excused from any penalties and expulsion and Slade goes back home with a positive attitude towards life. When I first see the name of the movie Scent of a Women, I am quiet confused, I do not know what it stands for. But after seeing the movie, I finally get some information from the movie and understand a little about the name of this movie. Actually it is said that the colonel’s optimism and passion for life are best illustrated by his sensitivity to the scent of a woman, who symbolizes hope and vitality to the colonel. And the special ability to distinct women from scent of the colonel reveals his deep understanding and feelings of life.Just like all the audiences of the movie, I am totally impressed by the perfect performance of the actors and the splendid plot of the movie. There are definitely two terrific scenes in the movies that you can not miss. The first one is in a restaurant where the blind colonel teaches a beautiful girl Donna to dance the tango. It is too smooth and dramatic for me to imagine that the man in the floor is blind. I can almost sense the hope and vitality of the colonel from his love for tango through the screen. When the movie comes to this part, my heart is filled with a complex feeling. I can not even distinct itclearly whether I am more glad to see the joyful look on the blind colonel’s face or depressed and regret by the fact of his blindness. But what I know is that at this moment I am truly moved and realize the hope and value of life.As for another scene, it happens nearly at the end of the movie when the colonel presents in defense of Charles at the prep school disciplinary committee. He make such a profound speech that what he says is still lingering around in my mind. He says these words to defend Charles not because he thinks it is right for Charles to keep silence on this specific misdoing, but because he is amazed to see that Charles is a man of integrity and he is unwilling to sell his friends out to buy a bright future. His impressive words and powerful tongue is obviously a bright plot which highlights the movie. It is a speech which mixed with joy and profound meaning. He points out that actually Charles is the one who has noble character and he is a integrity boy who stick to principle at the cost of self-scarify. While hearing his powerful words “ There is nothing like the sight of an amputated spirit, there is no prosthetic for that ” ,a feeling of excitement and shock floods in my heart. I can’t agree with what he says anymore—there is no prosthetic for our spirit. Nothing can bride our spirit and nothing should stop our way to the right path made of principle. And integrity and courage are theessential values that leaders should be made of. By the way, I’d like to add that everyone should treasure these virtues. In a word, Scent of a Woman is a fantastic and profound movie.I have learnt o lot from this movie—the meaning of life, the significance of the integrity and courage, and of course the friendship. At the end of my review I’d like to quote a sentence from the movie—now we have come to the crossroads in our life, and we should choose the right path to the principle that leads to character. Only in this way, can we create a bright future for ourselves.,。

The Scent of a Woman is the kind of film that many would think belongs to a bygone era. While it is frank and contemporary without sugar coating it illustrates the value of character over glitz and how small acts can have long lasting consequences. The film pits two characters who are diametrical opposites.Al Pacino plays the world weary retired Army Lt.Colonel who through a stupid accident looses his sight and his way of life.Chris Donnelly is a young prep school kid on a scholarship whose way of life may be coming to an end owing to the acts of richer kids at the exclusive prep school who pull a stupid stunt. The blind Lt.Colonel needs an escort so that he can go to NYC and have a rip roaring time before he makes a fateful decision. The poor preppy needs to earn a few bucks to travel and is in desperate need of some advice on how to get through his crisis at school. The interplay between the two characters is mind boggling. It is more riveting than the best Grisham novel. Both characters are asked to make life and death decisions that call for them to reach deep into their inner core. The right decision is unhappily the tougher decision to make. Two terrific scenes that are not to be missed. The first is in the New York ballroom where the blind Lt.Colonel teaches the actress Miss Anwar to dance the tango. It is so smooth and dramatic that even a couch potato is tempted to reach for the Yellow Pages in search of dance lessons. The second and most profound is the speech that Al Pacino makes in defense of Chris Donnelly at the prep school disciplinary hearing. It has to go down as one of the great orations of all times. The Scent of aWoman is very satisfying on many levels. The character development is superb, dialogue terrific, glamorous locations and a story line that requires the characters to show themselves to be the people they really are.The film has a lot of funny lines and great drama.(ZZ from IMDB)Film ReviewBy Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatScent of a WomanDirected by Martin BrestUniversal Studios Home Video 01/93 DVD/VHS Feature Film Rand potentially physically dangerousunfettered, unforced, and highly enjoyable.Unfortunately, considering how sound the bulk of the picture is, the final moments, with their overt pandering to a Hollywood-style ending, are a severe l iability.Certainly, such “triumphs” are fun to watch, but they cheapen Scent of a Woman.Would it have cost the production team that much to inject a little realism into the film's last reel? The movie is as long as its storyline demands. It doesn't seem like two and one-half hours, and less time with these characters would have cheated the audience.Aided by an emotive score from Thomas Newman, the picture has opportunities to soar.Hampered by the script's limitations, however, Scent of a Woman falls short of being a masterful productionThere are few films that I consider to be truly great.I don't mean 'great' in the pedestrian sense of “that's great.” I'm talking “true greatness.”Scent of a Woman has true greatness. It has everything that a timeless classic should have.Unforgettable characters, superb acting, a script that is profound and moving;heartwarming at times and heartrending at others.Music that accents eachmoment perfectly and is never obtrusive.Scenes that are so perfectly directed and edited and imbued with such powerful emotions that they leave indelible impressions on the mind and heart.Scent of a Woman revolves around two main characters: Lieutenant Colonel Frank R.Slade(played by Al Pacino)and prep school student Charlie Simms(played by Chris O'Donnel.) Take a moment to step into the internal world of Col.Frank Slade.Take a look around.See anything? You won't, because Col.Slade is blind. His sight was taken from in in a freak accident some five years before.Col.Slade is a man accustomed to power, to barking orders and taking charge in every situation.Even in his prime, he was impossible to live with. Now, years later, he's blind, “handicapped”, and living at the behest of others. He has not adjusted gracefully to this setback. Now meet Charlie Simms.Charlie is an honor student attending Baird prep school.Unlike the other Baird boys, his family is not wealthy, so he's on financial aid. He's a quiet, introspective and kindhearted young man. He's also very intelligent. He needs an easy weekend job to make some extra money. He see's an ad to housesit a disabled man over the weekend, so he investigates it.The man in need of sitting is Col.Slade, of course.Charlie's first encounter with the Colonel is a memorable one, as the Colonel gives him firsthand experien ce of what a military “dressing down” is like delivered at an extremely loud volume.Charlie is obviously a bit put off by this, but the Colonel's family and caretakers plead with him, so he takes the job.Little does he realize that Col.Slade has his own plans, and they don't involve sitting around being baby sat.Once his family leaves, Col.Slade bullies Charlie into accompanying him on a flight to New York by sheer force of his personality.Charlie attempts to resist, but he is simplyoutmanuevered by the wiley Col.Slade.Col Slade explains to Charlie that he going to New York to take “a little tour of pleasures” that he has been denied by his condition. With much persuasion, Charlie finally agrees to go.Charlie's first impression of Col.Slade is that he is loud, crude, egotistical and highly antagonistic. But as Charlie helps the Colonel navigate from one first class New York locale to another, he andthe Colonel gradually develop a strong mutual respect.Over time, he discovers that the Colonel does have a heart, and can in fact be very charming(especially if there's a lady around.) But despite this, Charley has not seen the worst yet.Eventually, he must confront the Colonel's most deeply hidden fears and outrage concerning his inability to function as he once did. This moment in the movie is *charged* with emotion as both Pacino and O'Donnel deliver riveting performances. In fact, there are so many standout performances in this movie that the Motion Picture Association should slap it with an anti-trust suit;)Another thing this film does exceptionally well is balance the characters of Frank Slade and Charlie Simms.Slade is an outspoken, overbearing bully who has grown weary of the world and with his own failures.Charlie is an earnest and kindly young man who believes that all mistakes can be made right. When they first meet, it seems clear that there is a major power imbalance, with Col.Slade brutally running over Charlie's quiet protestations. But as these two get to know one another better, it becomes clear to both the viewer and to Col.Slade that Charlie possesses great strength, but it is a quieter strength than the Colonels. It is the strength of true integrity and conviction. There are many beautiful scenes where these two men discoverprofound truths about themselves and each other as a result of their conflicts.Scent of a Woman is a rare and beautiful movie. It's a movie about how one man is lost in despair, and how a younger man helps him find his way. There are so many outstanding aspects to this movie that I could go on for pages, but instead I'll just ask you to watch it.Prepare to be amazed.

Review on “Scent of a Woman”The films which are played by the teacher in the Western Film Appreciation Course are classical. These films not only introduce the culture of western country, but also touch everyone’s soul, make everyone to think about life. I am aways moved by these films. Among these films, my favorite is Scent of a Woman.Scent of a Woman is about a poor but excellent prep school student Charlie faces with the dilemma of whether or not tell the president who played a trick on him. If he tells the president the fact that he knew, the president promises Charlie that he will be admitted by Harvard, if not, he will be expelled.A retired blind Colonel Frank who hires Charlie as his companion. Frank arranges a special tour to New York City in the Thanksgiving weekend with Charlie. Frank lives in dark, so he has lost the motivation to keep alive in the world, he intends to commit suicide after enjoying the tour. Charlie saves Frank from verge of death ,Frank is moved by Charlie’s brave and feels the true love from Charlie’s perseverance , finally, he give up to kill himself and gets the hope and confidence again. Frank makes a speech in Charlie’s school and persuade the Disciplinary Committee not to expell Charlie for he didn’t tell the fact.Scent of a Woman tells us not to lose hope of life, even if you are blind like Frank. Frank is a very proud man with a glorious time as a colonel , so he is very negative after he became blind. His familis do not know what he need indeed. He thinks he is a failed man, useless, the only way to finish the unhappy life is to kill himself. But in fact, he is a charming person. He is able to dance the tango and drive a Ferrari better than normal people. He tells Charlie he just live with some thoughts. When Frank being despairing, Charlie faces Frank’s gun bravely and tells Frank he is attractive when he danced the tango and draved Ferrari. Actually,we are afraid of death as well as Frank. We can’t live with beautiful thing all the time ,but there is always a reason keeps us go on.Don’t lose hope of life.Charlie makes an example for me, he didn’t sell anybody out to buy his future. With the help of Frank,Charlie insists on his own belief, throwing away the burdens and selfishness. The character of integrity is one of America Values which this film wants to convey. It is difficult for everyone to keep honest all the time. Integrity and courage are the stuff leaders should be made of. Charlie guides a bright way for his classmates and us.In the tour to New York City, Charlie finds Frank’s attraction and helps frank restore confidence to his life. Frank thinks highly of Charlie because of Charlie is pure in heart. The relation between Frank and Charlie gradually become like father and son. Sometimes our confidence comes from other’s encouragement and praise, so it is important to know how to praise. Our life will suffer loneliness and depression, but friendship will warm our heart. We have much to share with our friends in life, including happiness and sadness, so it is important for you to find real friendship. In our life, we always suffer different misfortunes in each of our stage, but we should be those who face up to the cruel world bravely instead of being negative .。

A Review of Scent of a WomanName:Student number:Class:Scent of a Woman, a movie tells about a series of stories happened between a blind officer and a poor student.Charlie, who lived in a famous school with a group of rich kids, happened to see a few students prepared to play tricks on the headmaster. After the event, the headmaster asked Charlie to tell the truth and promised that if he did, he would be recommended to go to Harvard. It was so attractive for a poor student who totally depended on his scholarship to pay the tuition. But Charlie was such a good boy that he still chose to stand on the side of friends. With such a psychological burden, Charlie went to meet his employer. The person Charlieneeded to take care of was a blind and cantankerous man, Frank Slade, used to be the lieutenant colonel.During the 26 years on the line, Frank experienced a lot and his eyes was blown out in an accident. He had nothing to do all day at home and lost the courage and confidence to live gradually. Both of them got into trouble, however, after a weekend together, they built a special relationship and found the value of life from each other. What confused me at the beginning is that why such a film named Scent of a Woman. To be honest, when I first heard this name, there was a completely different frame in my mind. However, I seemed to understand something when I watched it the second time.It was amazing that Frank couldidentify women by the smell. From this aspect, I realized that Frank was an experienced man and the name of this movie was just a clue. And I still remember Frank said: “This is just the start of your education, son.” to Charlie when they were on the plane. So I began to change my mind about Frank, actually, he was a cute man with a mask. And after I watched the movie, I had to admire the wisdom of Frank for he always could know what people were thinking and solved the problems by a few words.Besides, the scene he danced with Donna also made me impressive. When Donna said she would be a little afraid of making a mistake Frank answered her: “No mistakes in the tango, not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, get all tangled up, just tango on.”I agree with Frank in this way, we should equip with courage to have a try so that we will never regret when we become old.And the last lecture is worthy of applause.Although Frank was blind he could see more than a normal people, didn't he?However, such a hero as Frank wanted to kill himself after the trip. The littleCharlie was surprised about that, so did I.I guessed maybe Frank could not accept the situation that he suddenly became a blind from a majestic-looking colonel.I believed this was just a very little part of the reason. And after hearing what Rod said I thought that the real reason drove Frank to give up himself might be “lonely”.Frank insisted on the Greek spirit which pursued quality and encouraged people to try their best to do everything they want to do.On the country, Frank's family thought money is more important than quality so they left him alone. What Rod said reminded me of a sentence in the film “You're so wrapped up in sugar;you'veforgotten the taste of real honey!”It clearly showed the view of Frank that quality is more important. As a result, Frank was not accepted by the family. When Frank prepared for his plan of killing himself, he said: “I mean, there's no one wants to tear a herring with me anymore.” and after he was persuaded not to give up, he told Charlie what kept him going all these years was just the thought that maybe one day he could wake up in the morning and a woman still beside him.It seemed so simple, didn't it?But I thought what Frank really want was a companion who understood him.In the climax of the film, Frank was going to kill himself, the reason Charlie gave let him found the hope again.“You can dance the tango and drive a Ferrari better than anyone I've ever seen.”I was not sure what I thought was right or not, as far as my concerned, the magic of this reason was that it was an approval about Frank.Greek spirit believed if you died, no one would die for you and everything would end.Maybe this spirit in the deep heart of Frank was inspired by Charlie so he decided to give up his plan. After they finished their trip, Charlie had to face his problem said the truth or not.Although the other witness George abandoned what he said and passed the buck, Charlie still chose to follow his conscience. With the help of Frank, finally, Charlie avoided being expelled.“There is no prosthetic for that.” I thought this sentence should be remembered by every one of us.At the end of movie, Frank had a pleasure talk with a beautiful woman. It was a wonderful ending. The story happened in Thanksgiving Day, although both Frank and Charlie didn't have a good time with family, they spent a meaningful holiday.Frank found the hope from Charlie and Charlie also learned something that never be taught on the books from Frank, and I thought what they had done for each other was the best gift forThanksgiving.Rod said this was the best movie he had ever seen, he must be deeply attracted by Frank.I think it is the reason why I can find something in common between Frank and Rod.However, views vary from person to person, I can't easily say it is an excellent movie for I haven't totally understood it, but it is a movie worth thinking deeply.Every time I look it back I will have a new understanding.第二篇:闻香识女人英文观后感《西方电影文化——影视鉴赏》My review on Scent of a changes when Charles takes a part-time job for being an assistant of the blind Colonel Frank.Frank has planed to stop his life after a travel to New Yark this weeken d.At first,Charles is just a seeing eye dog in Frank’s eyes. But after two days living together and lots of things happened this two days make them really good friends.Theylearn from each other and Colonel then kown what happened to Charles. Finally,Charles successfully arrest Frank to kill himself. And at the school’meeting,Frank show up,bringing a brilliant speech, making Charles eacape to be dismissed,as well as,a no-ending applause.I was deeply touched by this movie, though it has no convulse scene ,I appreciate it because of something about life it teach us.The movie chose two people with nearly no commons,Charles is young and a little shy,but Frank is blind and bed-tempered.On the other hand,we can say these two guys are alike because they both come to a crossroad of their life. For Charles,to insist his faith or to betray his friends to make himself safe? For Frank,it’s much more terrible because he is planning to take his own life.Fortune’wheel make these two poor guys together.Being a soldier,Frank teaches Charles that it is shameful to betray friends and at the school metting,he emphasize that so nice Charles is and the headmaster is teaching in a woring way, which is really welcomed by the following students.Being a young, friendly boy.Charles make Frank know that life is treasure that one should never give it up.Two and one-half hour,Scent of a woman teaches us two much,it is really wothy to appreciate. My Review on Scent of a WomanThe first time I watched the movie of scent of a woman I was moved deeply.I was moved by the naiveté of Charlie.I was moved by the lecture which was given by Frank Slade. At the beginning of the movie Frank Slade was an overbearing Army officer. He dislikes all the things around him, and he was looking forward to the costly life in New York.Charlie, a student of Baird—a famous college of the USA was in trouble by a practical joke that made by a friend of him.By chance, Charlie got the work to take care toFrank Slade. And then they went to the New York. There Frank Slade found the true life what he should to have, and just there Frank Slade was moved by the naiveté of Charlie. And the naiveté changed Frank Slade. In the school Frank Slade gave all the people a lecture, which saved Charlie.Just this lecture taught how to be a person, a true person. In the end of the movie Frank Slade went to make up with his granddaughter, not like the beginning ofmovie. What I learn from the movie is that as a student I must study hard to gain a good future by myself, no matter how poor or rich my family is.For our friends we should treat them by heart we cannot inform on them to safe our side.We should deal with the trouble together. No matter how they see you, treat them by heart;help them because you are their friend. For ourselves, we must keep up our own mind.We should say what we think.Maybe we will have many ways to choice, the right way may be very hard to pass, maybe many persons choice others way because the right is too hard. But my friend, we should stick to choice the right one, because we cannot sell our soul.Without the soul we can get no future.no matter what situation we are in we must never say give up.What I learn from Frank Slade is we should keep a positive attitude to our life, no matter what mistakes we made, those were past, what we should do is having a good life.No one will live in the dark if he wants.Everyone will make mistakes in the life, but no matter what we have done inthe past, we should head to the sunshine. All in all, the movie taught me how to be a person with an unbroken soul.Only with it I will have a good future.

"Scent of a Woman," directed by Martin Brest and released in 1992, is a film that transcends the boundaries of conventional storytelling, offering an emotionally charged, multi-layered narrative that explores themes of morality, loyalty, and self-discovery. It is a cinematic journey that not only captivates our visual senses but also engages our olfactory imagination through its title, metaphorically evoking the essence of femininity that permeates the story. This essay delves into the various aspects that make "Scent of a Woman" a timeless masterpiece, analyzing its narrative structure, character development, thematic depth, and the powerful performances that bring it to life.Firstly, the narrative structure of "Scent of a Woman" is ingeniously crafted, oscillating between moments of tension, humor, and profound introspection. The film revolves around Charlie Simms (Chris O'Donnell), a financially struggling prep school student who accepts a temporary job as a caregiver for retired Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade (Al Pacino) over Thanksgiving weekend. Their initial encounter sets the stage for a seemingly mundane premise that gradually unfolds into a transformative odyssey, where each character's vulnerabilities and strengths are laid bare. The narrative is skillfully punctuated by unexpected twists and turns, such as Frank's impromptu trip to New York City and his daring tango with Donna (Gabrielle Anwar), which serve to break the monotony and heighten the emotional stakes. These events are seamlessly interwoven with quieter, more introspective scenes, like Charlie's internal struggle over whether to report his classmates' misconduct, showcasing the film's ability to balance intense drama with moments of subtle yet profound character development. At the heart of "Scent of a Woman" lies its exceptional character study, particularly the complex and enigmatic figure of Frank Slade. Al Pacino's Oscar-winning portrayal brings to life a man whose brash exterior masks deep-seated pain, regret, and a longing for redemption. Frank's initial abrasiveness and cynicism gradually give way to reveal a wounded soul yearning for connection and purpose. His transformation, catalyzed by his relationshipwith Charlie and their shared experiences, is a testament to the power of human empathy and the potential for personal growth at any stage of life.Charlie, on the other hand, serves as a moral compass and a canvas upon which Frank's wisdom is imprinted. Initially timid and indecisive, he learns from Frank the importance of standing up for one's convictions and embracing life's challenges head-on. Their evolving dynamic is a masterclass in character chemistry, as their mutual influence fosters growth and understanding in each other, culminating in Charlie's poignant decision at the climactic school assembly.Thematic depth is another hallmark of "Scent of a Woman." The film delves into weighty subjects such as integrity, sacrifice, and the complexities of masculinity, all encapsulated in Frank's iconic line, "I'm just getting started." It questions societal norms and expectations, challenging the notion that success is solely defined by academic or professional achievements. Instead, it emphasizes the value of moral courage, personal integrity, and the importance of staying true to oneself, even in the face of adversity. Moreover, the film's exploration of sensory perception, particularly the sense of smell, adds a unique dimension to its narrative. Frank, despite being blind, possesses an acute sense of smell that enables him to 'see' people and situations in a profound way. This metaphorical use of scent underscores the idea that true understanding often lies beyond superficial appearances, requiring us to delve deeper and perceive the world through multiple senses and perspectives. The film's technical aspects further contribute to its overall impact. The cinematography, with its lush visuals and moody lighting, complements the narrative's emotional fluctuations. The evocative score by Thomas Newman accentuates the film's most poignant moments, while the iconic tango sequence, choreographed to the tune of "Por una Cabeza," stands as a testament to the power of visual storytelling. In conclusion, "Scent of a Woman" is a cinematic tour de force that transcendsits seemingly straightforward premise to deliver a deeply affecting and thought-provoking experience. Its meticulously crafted narrative structure, nuanced character development, profound thematic explorations, and powerhouse performances converge to create a film that resonates long after the credits roll. By inviting us to 'smell' the essence of its characters and themes, it not only entertains but also challenges us to reevaluate our perceptions of ourselves and the world around us. A true masterpiece in every sense, "Scent of a Woman" remains an enduring testament to the power of cinema to move, inspire, and transform.。

A Review of Scent of a WomanName:Student number:Class:Scent of a Woman, a movie tells about a series of stories happened between a blind officer and a poor student. Charlie, who lived in a famous school with a group of rich kids, happened to see a few students prepared to play tricks on the headmaster. The person Charlie needed to take care of was a blind and cantankerous man, Frank Slade, used to be the lieutenant colonel. During the 26 years on the line, Frank experienced a lot and his eyes was blown out in an accident. However, I seemed to understand something when I watched it the second time.It was amazing that Frank could identify women by the smell. From this aspect, I realized that Frank was an experienced man and the name of this movie was just a clue. And I still remember Frank said: “This is just the start of your education, son.” to Charlie when they were on the plane. So I began to change my mind about Frank, actually, he was a cute man with a mask. And after I watched the movie, I had to admire the wisdom of Frank for he always could know what people were thinking and solved the problems by a few words. Besides, the scene he danced with Donna also made me impressive. When Donna said she would be a little afraid of making a mistake Frank answered her: “No mistakes in the tango, not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, get all tangled up, just tango on.”I agree with Frank in this way, we should equip with courage to have a try so that we will never regret when we become old. And the last lecture is worthy of applause. Although Frank was blind he could see more than a normal people, didn't he?However, such a hero as Frank wanted to kill himself after the trip. The little Charlie was surprised about that, so did I. I guessed maybe Frank could not accept the situation that he suddenly became a blind from a majestic-looking colonel. I believed this was just a very little part of the reason. And after hearing what Rod said I thought that the real reason drove Frank to give up himself might be "lonely". Frank insisted on the Greek spirit which pursued quality and encouraged people to try their best to do everything they want to do. O n the country, Frank's family thought money is more important than quality so they left him alone. What Rod said reminded me of a sentence in the film "You're so wrapped up in sugar; you've forgotten the taste of real honey!" It clearly showed the view of Frank that quality is more important. As a result, Frank was not accepted by the family. When Frank prepared for his plan of killing himself, he said: “I mean, there's no one wants to tear a herring with me anymore.” and after he was persuaded not to give up, he told Charlie what kept him going all these years was just the thought that maybe one day he could wake up in the morning and a woman still beside him. It seemed so simple, didn't it? But I thought what Frank really want was a companion who understood him.In the climax of the film, Frank was going to kill himself, the reason Charlie gave let him found the hope again. "Y ou can dance the tango and drive a Ferrari better than anyone I've ever seen." I was not sure what I thought was right or not, as far as my concerned, the magic of this reason was that it was an approval about Frank. Greek spirit believed if you died, no one would die for you and everything would end. Maybe this spirit in the deep heart of Frank was inspired by Charlie so he decided to give up his plan. After they finished their trip, Charlie had to face his problem said the truth or not. Although the other witness George abandoned what he said and passed the buck, Charlie still chose to follow his conscience. With the help of Frank, finally, Charlie avoided being expelled. "There is no prosthetic for that." I thought this sentence should be remembered by every one of us. At the end of movie, Frank had a pleasure talk with a beautiful woman. It was a wonderful ending. The story happened in Thanksgiving Day, although both Frank and Charlie didn't have a good time with family, they spent a meaningful holiday. Frank found the hope from Charlie and Charlie also learned something that never be taught on the books from Frank, and I thought what they had done for each other was the best gift for Thanksgiving.Rod said this was the best movie he had ever seen, he must be deeply attracted by Frank. I think it is the reason why I can find something in common between Frank and Rod. However, views vary from person to person, I can't easily say it is an excellent movie for I haven't totally understood it, but it is a movie worth thinking deeply. Every time I look it back I will have a new understanding.。

There is no prosthetic soul

Paying for his flight home, Charlie takes a job over Thanksgiving taking after a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel named Frank Slade, who is now blind and prone.Charlie, along with a friend George, witness an act of vandalism at the school, and are being pressured by the school's headmaster to divulge the names of the perpetrators, which they both know. While Charlie refuses to talk, the chances are that Trask offers a bribe: a letter of recommendation which would virtually guarantee his acceptance to Harvard. Surprisingly, Charlie says nothing.During dinner at the Oak Room, the colonel reveals the purpose for the trip: to eat at an expensive restaurant, stay at a luxury hotel, visit his big brother, make love to a beautiful woman, and then "blow his brains out." Charlie is taken aback, not knowing how seriously to take Slade's suicidal intentions. When traveling to the Colonel's older brother's home for Thanksgiving dinner without informing the brother that they were coming, Charlie learns from Slade's rude nephew how Slade lost his sight-by foolishly juggling hand grenades while drunk. In a car ride, Charlie has no choice but tell Slade about his complications at school. Slade advises Charlie to inform on his classmates and go to Harvard, warning him that Willis will probably be pressured into not maintaining silence. One morning Slade is deeply depressed and Charlie manages to raise him from bed by suggesting they test drive a Ferrari. A hair-raising scene follows where Charlie lets Slade drive the car, which he does at high speed with reckless abandonment, until finally being stopped by a policeman. When they get back, Slade is again out of sorts. Slade tricks Charlie into leaving the hotel room to buy him a box of cigars and some asprin, but a suspicious Charlie returns to find Slade preparing to shoot himself. Charlie intervenes, grabbing the gun just before Slade can pull the trigger, and after a physical struggle followed by a heartfelt argument, Slade shoot neither himself nor Charlie. And then, Slade begins to confide in Charlie, particularly about his unrealized dream of one day finding a woman who would love him. Then they take a limousine ride home and Charlie is dropped at school. He and Willis are subjected to a formal inquiry in front of the student disciplinary committee. Guided by the limo driver, Slade has decided to come back, to join Charlie on the auditorium stage. For his defense, Willis has enlisted the help of his father. Willis attempts to parry the question, he passes the burden on to Charlie, whom the headmaster perceives doesn`t wear glasses, to provide additional evidence. Charlie, after visibly struggling with his final decision, refuses to give the students' names. And headmaster Trask, deeply displeased at not getting the answers he wants, recommends Charlie's expulsion from the school, branding him as a cover-up artist and a liar. Trask's actions unexpectedly provoke the silent Slade into a passionate defense of Charlie, and a scathing criticism of the nature of the proceedings. Slade finishes with a speech on the nature of integrity, defending Charlie's choice to be silent in the face of obvious rewards to do otherwise, saying, "I don't know if Charlie's silence here today is right or wrong; I'm not a judge or jury. But I can tell you this: he won't sell anybody out to buy his future!" The disciplinary committee finally comes to the decision that Willis named for committingthe prank be placed on academic probation for suspicion of ungentlemanly conduct, and that Charlie be excused from any further response to the matter. The students presented break into loud. The film ends with Slade being playful with his niece's children , and the limo driver taking Charlie back to school as the credits start to roll.3.Contents in The Scent of a WomanDrinking and nursing his self-pity, the colonel sits alone in his room. We sense that he has been lonely for so long, but never lonelier than current, when he is trapped inside blindness that he just can`t same to move on. Later his life he lost his sight, through his own stupidity, and now he gets drunk and awaits for victims. There do be hope for him, however, because of two fugitive threads in his personality that he possesses a grudging sense of humor and romance. The colonel, whose name is Slade, and who does not like to be called "Sir," is played by Al Pacino in one of his best and riskiest performances, because at first the character is so abrasive that we can hardly stand him, and only gradually do we begin to understand how he works and why he isn't as miserable as he seems.Charlie, an outstanding student at the exclusive local school-a scholarship kid from out West, who doesn't have money to throw around and is wanna get this weekend job, keeping an eye on the old guy. Unexpectedly, there`ll be a disciplinary hearing on Monday about who pulled the prank that damaged the headmaster's new Jaguar, and Charlie, who knows who did it, doesn't want to be a stoolie. The chances re that he could get expelled for that. What makes "Scent of a Woman" more significant is that it takes Charlie and the colonel and places them in a combination of two reliable genres. There's the coming-of-age formula, in which an older man teaches a younger one the ropes. It's crossed here with the prep school movie, which from "A Separate Peace" through "If," "Taps," "Dead Poets Society" and "True Colors," has always involved a misfit who learns to stand up for what he believes in. It can be easily concluded that the two make a good fit in "Scent of a Woman," perhaps because Charlie needs in school is a role model, and perhaps because the colonel has always known how to do is provide one.Theatrically, Charlie thinks the weekend will be spent in the colonel's little cottage, watching the old guy drink and listening to his insults, however, the colonel has other thoughts that more than Charlie can imagine. Buying them a couple of tickets to New York, in particular, he wants to indoctrinate the younger man with his ideas about women and how they are the most wonderful beings in all of God's creation.Undesirably, t he colonel's notions are not always Politically Correct. First and foremost, not a sexist animal is he. Moreover, old-fashioned regard for women, mixed with yearning and fascination and the appreciation of a gentleman who has lived his life in the military does he have. Last but not least, he even insists that he can inhale a woman's scent and tell you all about her, including what color her hair is, or her eyes, and whether she has a merry light in her eyes. All of this is done against a backdrop of very serious drinking, which Charlie looks at with growing alarm. The movie does not make the mistake of making the colonel and the student into pals with instant camaraderie. A little scared of the colonel, Charlie keeps their distance. While drinking in hotel ballroom, where Charlie notices a beautiful young woman ,the Colonel engages her in conversation and talks her into doing the tango with him. It turns out that not only is he a pretty good dancer but an old smoothie.Admittedly, there do be something so touching with him. To name only a few, all of his life, he confides to Charlie that he has always dreamed of waking up beside a elegant and beautiful young woman. The limo driver takes them to the address of a highly recommended call girl. Charlie awaits in the car. The movie could have spoiled everything by going inside with the colonel, but it stays outside with Charlie, and when the colonel comes out again he says very little, but in it we can guess that he regards woman as the undiscovered country of all good and reassurance, a country he will never live in.Affected and inspired, I must battle from my tears for so many times. The attractive plot, the skillful acting of Al Pacino and the fantastic classic tango are all the lightspot of the film. At the beginning, there`s a wonder arise on my mind that why did the Frank coated a lot on the fine cuisine, staying in a suit at the famous Hotel. It can be reasonably concluded that what make Frank determined to suicide are because he is a blind man, because h e couldn’t got the fondness of woman, and because h e couldn’t make any contribution to the society. However, what he got is the sympathy from others. From the scene that Frank ranted: I am in dark, we find that he was just a depressed, disappointed, lonely, fragile and helpless old man at that moment. From his own prospective, only through this method can he gain the only pride. Before his left, he wanted to experience the most wonderful monments of his life again to fulfill and console his fragile heart.Confronting the crossroad of his life, Charlie chose a path make up of the principle. Though his self-sacrifice would ruin his prospect, yet he still stick it out not to tell anybody else to buy his future, that`s called integrity and courage. If he confessed the fact, he alsojoined the evil-doing like George and sold his soul and principle. As Frank instructed: there is no prosthetic for soul. The film was an impact on the distorted moral value in America and sarcasm to the non-blind. It raises a simple question: how to be a human? In today’ society, there are too many people sell their souls in order to gain the benefits. It is an obvious constract between Charlie and his classmates. A human that have the principle and soul is the most valuable moral. Just like Chralie, a integrity boy who stick to principle at the cost of self-sacrifice.Ultimately, they arrive at a crisis, and Pacino and Charlie engage in the emotional equivalent of the showdown between Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise in "A Few Good Men." It's quite a scene that the real conclusion of the movie, although Charlie's story still has to find its own conclusion, when the two men go back to the prep school. By the end of "Scent of a Woman," we have arrived at the usual conclusion of the coming-of-age movie, and the usual conclusion of the prep school movie. But rarely have we been taken there with so much intelligence and skill.4.Conclusion of Scent of a WomanScent of a Woman was an impact on the distorted moral value in America and sarcasm to the non-blind. As reflection of the American spirit and their ideal life:entering famous university, driving luxurious automobile, enjoying all the life could provide. This is what an American pursues lifelong. Achieve it, he will be a successful man, if not he will be mediocre all life.In this case, it appeared too difficult for Charlie Simms when he went up to the crossroad that to sell somebody to buy his future or to be expelled by the principal. On moral grounds, Charlie shouldn't sell anybody to buy his future; but for his own sake, he should tell the truth to gain the opportunity entering Harvard. Conscience did Charlie have, as he said, he chose the right path without any hesitation. It seemed as if the principal thought personal future was much more important than faithfulness. An appointment have Charlie and George made that not tell their parents about that. The chances are that Charlie kept his promise: he shouldered responsibility by himself and didn't even ask anybody for help. However, George backed out and hid in his big daddy's pocket. Compared with Charlie, the character George here was just a negative role, a coward or a clown, as to highlighted Charlie's sparkling merits. George was afraid not only to be expelled but also to be revenged by the three schoolmates who played prank. Not having courage to face the principle committee, he used amb iguous words such as "the shape like…", "I'm not sure…". But Charlie told the committee that he just "can't tell". The blind Colonel sawCharlie's noble character what all the others didn't notify. The Colonel`s comments is so fantastic that I can`t help appreciating it, which objectively evaluated Charlie` behavior, and which is highly complimented, "I don't know if Charlie's silence here today is right or wrong; I'm not a judge or jury. But I can tell you this: he won't sell anybody out to buy his future ! And that, my friends, is called integrity. That's called courage. Now that's the stuff leaders should be made of."All in all, the movie is as long as its storyline demands and it never seem like two and one-half hours. Filmed in America , Scent of a Woman is shot and directed with a great degree of sharpness and style ,with the action moving along at a cheerful and enjoyable pace. Ultimately , what makes the film more memorable, however, is the sprites that it indicated. Hampered by the script's limitations, however, Scent of a Woman is inevitably a masterpiece.。

The eternal glory: Frank SladeFor the first time I saw the movie: Scent of a Woman, I was completely fascinated by Slade. There is no denying that Slade is a man with catching and intelligence. In the beginning, John is given hell by him. Maybe you would think colonel a gruff and nasty man. But I feel him a dignified man who had a great service in army except that. With the development of the movie, I gradually moved by colonel. Think about it. If you had decided to commit suicide, what would you do before? Maybe you would make yourself a big dinner and say goodbye to ones that you love. So does Slade. He wants to enjoy his life for the last time and farewell to his family.Slade is Slade. He does everything admirably. I love the tango scene, the Ferrari scene and the pseudo-courtroom scene very much. And I especially take pleasure in the tango scene. It’s miraculous that Slade could tell the perfumes’ names accurately though the scent. The woman is such a kingly and elegant girl that everybody can’t help being captivated by her. Slade is so charismatic that nobody in the dining room could find him a blind man. What’s more, the background music is such a beautiful melody that I am deeply moved and hear it again and again after watching the movie. Thomas Newman must be a talented man. Por Una Cabeza is the most touching masterpiece that I have ever heard. When Slade call on his older brother’s home, I’m sure that he comes there with full hope. Slade wants just a little warm from his families. But, the thing that welcomes him is abuse and awkward. His ‘hoo-ha’ which seems that he is unconcerned sells himself. He is sad and he does care it. I grow to sympathize with him. In fact, Slade is in common with us. He hates alone, longs for love and pretends a mighty man. Slade says that he just desires a woman who never abandons him. When I heard that, I’m misty-eyed. Slade is a man with love and he fight with life. He is like a child: natural, defiant, conniving, but easily touched and brave. He masked himself with excess fearless and strong which leads to himself far away from people around him and his blind to see hope and love with him. Fortunately, Slade find his value through his fellow John. He is blind, but he could be loved by people. Everything is hopeful in the end.I enjoyed the movie every minute. It must be admitted that Frank Slade is a man with full enchantment. The man would never be corny and I recommend the movie to everyone.20100360 马璐璐弘深学院理工综合02班。

The Scent of a Woman is the kind of film that many would think belongs to a bygone era. While it is frank and contemporary without sugar coating it illustrates the value of character over glitz and how small acts can have long lasting consequences. The film pits two characters who are diametrical opposites. Al Pacino plays the world weary retired Army Lt. Colonel who through a stupid accident looses his sight and his way of life. Chris Donnelly is a young prep school kid on a scholarship whose way of life may be coming to an end owing to the acts of richer kids at the exclusive prep school who pull a stupid stunt. The blind Lt. Colonel needs an escort so that he can go to NYC and have a rip roaring time before he makes a fateful decision. The first is in the New Y ork ballroom where the blind Lt. Colonel teaches the actress Miss Anwar to dance the tango. It is so smooth and dramatic that even a couch potato is tempted to reach for the Y ellow Pages in search of dance lessons. The second and most profound is the speech that Al Pacino makes in defense of Chris Donnelly at the prep school disciplinary hearing. It has to go down as one of the great orations of all times. The Scent of a Woman is very satisfying on many levels. The character development is superb, dialogue terrific, glamorous locations and a story line that requires the characters to show themselves to be the people they really are. The film has a lot of funny lines and great drama.(ZZ from IMDB)。

My Review on Scent of a WomanThe first time I watched the movie of scent of a woman I was moved deeply. I was moved by the naivetéof Charlie. I was moved by the lecture which was given by Frank Slade. At the beginning of the movie Frank Slade was an overbearing Army officer. He dislikes all the things around him, and he was looking forward to the costly life in New York. Charlie, a student of Baird—a famous college of the USA was in trouble by a practical joke that made by a friend of him. By chance, Charlie got the work to take care to Frank Slade. And then they went to the New York. There Frank Slade found the true life what he should to have, and just there Frank Slade was moved by the naiveté of Charlie. And the naiveté changed Frank Slade. In the school Frank Slade gave all the people a lecture, which saved Charlie. Just this lecture taught how to be a person, a true person. In the end of the movie Frank Slade went to make up with his granddaughter, not like the beginning ofmovie. What I learn from the movie is that as a student I must study hard to gain a good future by myself, no matter how poor or rich my family is. For our friends we should treat them by heart we cannot inform on them to safe our side. We should deal with the trouble together. No matter how they see you, treat them by heart; help them because you are their friend. For ourselves, we must keep up our own mind. We should say what we think. Maybe we will have many ways to choice, the right way may be very hard to pass, maybe many persons choice others way because the right is too hard. But my friend, we should stick to choice the right one, because we cannot sell our soul. Without the soul we can get no future.no matter what situation we are in we must never say give up. What I learn from Frank Slade is we should keep a positive attitude to our life, no matter what mistakes we made, those were past, what we should do is having a good life. No one will live in the dark if he wants. Everyone will make mistakes in the life, but no matter what we have done inthe past, we should head to the sunshine. All in all, the movie taught me how to be a person with an unbroken soul. Only with it I will have a good future.。

院系:外语系班级:学号:姓名:jinnyReview of Scent of a WomanHearing the movie Scent of a Woman, I thought it is the kind of movie with romantic plots. However the movie called "Scent of a Woman" with no real women? more precisely, it is a movie about men(Frank and Charlie),though there is a scene in the movie in which Frank takes beautiful Gabrielle to the dance floor at the Waldorf Astoria for an impromptu tango performance. I enjoyed watching this movie even more because it reminded me so much of my difficulty in life.Retired and blind Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade is a man with a very complex and powerful personality. When his daughter hires Charlie Simms, who is a student from a poor family at a prep school in New Hampshire, to take care of him over the Thanksgiving weekend, he is in for a roller-coaster ride. Within moments of the daughter leaving for a family reunion, Frank and Charlie are on a plane to New York City. Frank's plan: stay at the Waldorf Astoria, eat at the Oak Room, dance and make love to a beautiful woman, and then kill himself. Charlie is also facing some of his own challenges at school. He is caught up in the dilemma between a bright future in Harvard and getting expelled from the school, all depending on whether to speak out the pranksters in a disciplinary hearing. They are both at the crossroads of their life.During their stay in New York, they experienced a lot of adventures ,at the same time they get to know each other and have gradually influenced each other. Charlie persuades Frank to live on and Frank, while Frank’s powerful speech shocked the Students’ Committee in Baird , made Charlie get no punishment. This is a film about struggles in life and finally finding the meaning of it, full of wit and philosophy. Life is full of dilemma, obstacles and mistakes. The film is supposed to tell us the right attitude towards life: to make a right decision, to hold on and to live on.“If you’re tangled up, just tango on.” It is certainly the most quotable sentence in the whole movie. Frank asks a beautiful lady to tango with him by saying this.Later, Charlie reminds him of it when he is about to hysterically shoot himself to death.I remember the poem never give up written by Churchill. Never give up. Never lose hope. Always have faith. It allows you to cope. Trying times will pass, as they always do. Just have patience, your dream will come true. So put on a smile, you'll live through your pain. Know it will pass. Hold every minute in our life, go out to realize our dream in our heart! Nobody’s life can be always problem-free and full of sunshine. What matters is how to face it. If you never give up under any situation, then you can overcome the difficulties, get out of the difficult positions and obtain success. When we say “Never give up”, tha t means we go ahead in the adverse circumstances. That means we are in the advantageous circumstances, for we still keep on going. We should always keep in mind the three words—never give up.There are many films you can gain strength from them. The Scent of a Woman is one of them, but unlike them, this one is stronger. R emember the sentence“If you’re tangled up, just tango on.”jinny。
