the last eight years,Jo Meade rode her bike each Sunday on a16-mile round trip to her job washing dishes. It took more than an hour each way.Other days of the week she would spend two hours on three buses from her apartment to get to the other work, for a four-hour round trip. That was the“before”part of her life. The“after”part of her life was started by the community Police Officer Trevor Arnold, who delivered a used car to her with the help of a car dealer and other donors.Arnold, who spotted Meade, red and sweaty, riding her bike in the worst heat this summer, decided he would get her a car.He intended to quietly buy her a used car out of his own pocket so he turned to his friend Kody Slaght,a car salesman to ask about a car priced$1,000.That wasn't enough for a reliable ride, Slaght said, but the dealership said they would find a good car for her at a good price.Soon others were donating.Slaght and Arnold wouldn't say how much the car cost, but the value is about4,000.Arnold said he was motivated by Meade's work ethic(职业道德)to help.“I see a lot of hardworking people nut that's when they are at work. Can you imagine spending four hours of your day getting to and from work?”he said.Meade's boss said she was awesome and really reliable when she worked and she got along with others.“She's willing to rise the three buses to get in here on her day off if we need her too.”Meade said she was planning to buy a car,“but I haven't been able to afford it,”she said.“Trevor,he is a very good guy.I did not expect this.”(1)(2分)What can we learn about Jo Meade's work?A.It's free but Meade?A.His sympathy for Meade.B.His duty as a policeman..C.Her commitment to work.D.Her desire for a better life..(4)(2分)What's Meade's feeling for the donated c Last year,Americans spent a record$12.8billion online between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday. It's impressive until you compare it to the$17.6billion in sales made by Chinese consumers in a single24-hour period during2016's Singles Day.Singles Day is known as“Bare Sticks Day”or“Bare Branches Day”in Chinese-because the date “11/11”looks like bare branches and“one”is the loneliest number.Singles Day began in the early1990s in the dorm rooms of Nanjing University when a group of single friends were sorry about the lack of significant others and decided to mark the day by organizing activities as a group of singles and reducing their loneliness by buying themselves a gift. Then in2009,sensing a break between the sales period of China's National Day on Oct.1and Chinese New Year in late January or early February,Alibaba's Jack Ma saw an opening:sell to comfort lonely hearts. The first year did only$7.5million in sales, but just8years later, shoppers spent$25.3billion,or 168.2billion yuan, this year—a40percent jump from last year's$17.6billion.For comparison,Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the U.S.only netted$6.79billion in2016.Amazon doesn't release sales figures for July's Prime Day,but it's pretty safe to believe the not-quite-national-holiday doesn't come close to$25billion.“More than$25billion in one day is not just a sales figure,”Alibaba Group CEO Daniel Zhang said in a statement.“It represents the desire for quality consumption of the Chinese consumer, and it reflects how merchants and consumers alike have now fully accepted the combination of online and offline sales.”(1)(2分)What does the underlined word“others”refer to in Paragraph2? A.Roommates.B.Good friends.C.Boyfriends or girlfriends.D.Relatives.(2)(2分)What is the original purpose of China's Singles Day?A.To promote the online sale of goods.B.To reduce loneliness of singles in China.C.To create a holiday for all Chinese youth.D.To find boyfriends or girlfriends for singles.(3)(2分)China's Singles Day became consumers'day in.A.the early1990s B.2016C.2017D.2009(4)(2分)Which of the following words can describe Daniel Zhang's attitude to online sales? One2017study,for example, found that frequent nightmare sufferers rated themselves as more empathetic (共鸣的).They also displayed more of a tendency to unconsciously mirror other people through things like yawning.People who have constant nightmares also tend to think further outside the box on psychoanalysis tasks. Some other researches have found support for the idea that nightmares might be linked to creativity.People seeking cure for nightmares were not necessarily more fearful or anxious, but rather had a general sensitivity to all emotional experience.Sensitivity is the driving force behind intense dreams.Heightened sensitivity to threats or fear during the day results in had dreams and nightmares, whereas heightened passion or excitement may result in more intense positive dream. And both these forms of dreams may feed back into waking life, perhaps increasing suffering after nightmares,or promoting social bonds and empathy after positive dreams. The effects go further still. This sensitivity overflows over into perceptions and thoughts:people who have a lot of nightmares experience a dreamlike quality to their waking thoughts. And this kind of thinking seems to give them a creative edge. For instance, studies show that such people tend to have greater creative talent and artistic express. And people who often have nightmares also tend to have more positive dreams than the average person. The evidence points towards the idea that, rather than disturbing normal activity, people who are unfortunate in having a lot of nightmares also have a dreaming life that is at least as creative, positive and vivid as it can be distressing and terrifying. What's more, this imaginative richness is unlikely to be limited to sleep, but also is filled with waking thought and daydreams.Even after people wake up and shake off the nightmare,in other words,a mark of it stays behind, possessing them throughout the day.(1)(2分)What do most sleep researchers think of nightmares?A.They have no advantages at all.B.They make people more empathetic.C.They can promote humans'creativity.D.They are a reflection of waking behaviour.(2)(2分)How can nightmare sufferers probably stop nightmares in theory according to the text? A.Try to reduce sensitivity to threats or fear.B.Be more fearful or anxious to nightmares.C.Avoid excitement as much as possible.D.Promote social bonds and empathy.(3)(2分)What does the underlined word“perception”in Paragraph3mean? A.Awareness.B.Content.C.Intelligence.D.Determination.(4)(2分)What can be the best title for the text?A.The Solution of Nightmares B.The Benefits of NightmaresC.The Empathy of Nightmares D.The Tendency of Nightmares三、任务型阅读(共1题;共10分)6.(10分)任务型阅读Moving to a foreign country is an amazing,life-changing experience. There are some practical decisions that need to be made. For me,choosing to live with a French with a French family was the best choice I made, and here is why. When you're in a new environment with people you don't know who are speaking a language you're still not fluent in,you might feel lost, tired and homesick—I know I did. They showed me which buses to take to get to work, cooked dinner for me so we could eat together, and took me with them on trips to the beach, the theatre and even a bullfight. These were great opportunities to experience French culture and build relationships. They helped me feel more comfortable and welcome.Living with French people has improved my language skills.Being constantly exposed to real French conversation has allowed me to learn new phrases, widen my vocabulary and even improve my accent. My host family are happy to answer my questions and correct me when I say things wrong. The experience of living abroad is one that you will remember forever.Perhaps the friendships, like the memories, will also last. You might return for their birthdays, weddings, holidays, and much more.I hope to remain in contact with my host family long after I leave France because when I was away from my friends and loves ones, they welcomed me and made me part of their family.A.One such decision is choosing where to live.B.You can stay in your own space and privacy.C.Your host family might become your life-long friends.D.It makes me a better and more confident French speaker.E.However,my host family was wonderful and welcoming.F.A family can help you settle in,stopping you from feeling lonely.G.It's an opportunity to meet new people,a different culture and another language.

The partnership is beneficial for both parties involved, plants provide carbohydrates (碳水化合物) to the funguses and in exchange, the funguses aid in gathering water and providing nutrients to its partnering plant.A study conducted by Rensen Zeng of theSouthChinaAgriculturalUniversityfound that this also allowed for plants to warn one another of potential harm. The study showed Broad Beans used the fungal network to spy on one another for upcoming danger.Like our Internet, this fungal connectivity is also full of crime. Some plants, such as Golden Marigolds have been found to release poisons into the network to slow down the growth of surrounding plants in the fight for water and light. Other plants, such as the Phantom Orchid, do not have the chlorophyll (叶绿素) and must get the necessary nutrients from surrounding plants.Research suggests that animals such as insects and worms may be able to detect slight exchanges of nutrients through the network, allowing them to more easily find delicious roots to feed on; however, this has not been conclusively made clear in experimentation. The more we learn about this phenomenon, the more our understanding of the plant life of our planet will continue to change. Perhaps one day, we may be able to map out these complex networks entirely.4. What is the function of the first paragraph?A.To explain the aim of the web.B. To introduce the main topic.C. To give definition of diverse life.D. To show the importance of plants.5. The criminal behavior of plants can be seen as a way to________.A. compete for survivalB. gather more waterC. take in sunlightD. break natural rules6. What does the last paragraph suggest?A. Animals can also feed on the fungus.B. Nutrient exchanges are too slight to detect.C. No experiment can prove the phenomenon.D. More needs to be done to work out the network.7. Which can be the best title for the text?A. The Partnership between PlantsB. The Unknown Roots of the EarthC. The Superhighway Linking the PlantsD. The Mysterious Map Changing the WorldCWhen Jennifer Doudna was in sixth grade, she came home one day to find that her dad had lefta book titled The Double Helix on her bed. She put it aside, thinking it was one of those detective tales she loved. On a rainy Saturday, she picked up the book. As she sped through the pages, she became fascinated by the drama, which encouraged her to explore nature's wonders. Even though her high school teacher told her that girls didn't become scientists, she decided she would. She worked with a biologist, Charpentier, to turn a curiosity of nature into an invention—an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA. Known as Crispr, the tool will transform the human race. James Watson, the author of The Double Helix, later told her it was the most important biological advance: since he and Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA.For this achievement, Doudna and Charpentier were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020. Until now, only five women, beginning with Marie Curie in 1911, had won or shared the Nobel for Chemistry out of 184 award winners. When this year's prize was announced, Dr. Charpentier said it would provide a message specificallyto young girls who would like to follow the path of science and to show them that women can also be awarded prizes.A few decades from now, if it becomes possible and sate to edit DNA, should we allow parents to improve the IQ and physical strength of their kids? Should we let them decide eye color1 ? Skin color1 ? Height? After helping to discover Crispr, Dr. Doudna has become a leader in considering these moral issues. That's the main message we should take from this Nobel: New technologies can be a huge benefit to the human race, but in order to make sure they are used wisely, it's important for people to understand them.8. Jennifer Doudna decided to become a scientist because,__________A. her father pushed herB. a book inspired herC. her teacher encouraged herD. James Watson motivated her9. The belief fits withLoeb's alien spaceship theory that at least one alien spaceship might be flying over the orbit of Jupiter, which won the international attention last year.Astronomers inHawaiifound the first known interstellar object in late 2017. It was a bit of light moving so fast past the sun that it could only have come from another star. Almost every astronomer on the planet was trying to figure out how the object, called “Oumuamua” got to our far-away part of the Milky way galaxy. “One possibility is that ‘Oumuamua’ is debris from an advanced technological equipment,” Loeb said. “Technology comes from another solar system just showed up at our door. ”“‘Oumuamua’ is not an alien spaceship,” Paul Sutter, another scientist wrote. He suggested Loeb was seeking publicity. Most scientists think “Oumuamua” is some sort of rock. They think it could be an icy wandering comet.Loeb says that “Oumuamua's” behavior means it can't be a block of rock shaped like a long photo. He thinks it's more likely an object that's very long and thin, perhaps like a long pancake or a ship's sail. Loeb says that if someone shows him evidence thatcontradictshis beliefs, he will immediately give in.Loeb believes himself a truth-teller and risk-taker in an age of very safe, too-quiet scientists. “The worst thing that can happen to me is that I would be relieved of my management duties, and that would give me even more time to focus on science,” Loeb says. He said he wouldn't mind giving up all the titles he had and returning to the Israeli farming village where he grew up.12. What does Loeb say about “Oumuamua”?A. It is an icy comet.B. It looks like a long photo.C. It is actually some sort of rock.D. It may come from another alien civilization.13. What does the underlined word “contradicts” in paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Goes against.B. Relies on.C. Turns to.D. Searches for.14. What do you think of Loeb?A. He is foolish.B. He is unsatisfied with his titles.C. He is a firm believer in scientific truth.D. He is uncertain about his career future.15. What's the best title for the text?A. Have Aliens Paid a Visit in Spaceships?B. Do We Really Know about Space Theory?C. Scientists Are Working on High TechnologyD. Factories and power plants were sending out smoke and industrial waste while Americans were using petrol for their massive(大量的) cars, making air pollutionalmostsynonymous withthe nation’s development. What moved Senator Nelson to action was the 1969 massive oil spill inCalifornia, the largest in theUnited Statesat that time. The spill proved to be an environmental nightmare as it had a significant effect on marine life, killing about 3,500 sea birds, as well as marine animals such as dolphins, elephant seals and sea lions, fueling public anger. Inspired by the student antiwar movement at that period of time, Nelson found it an appropriate time to direct the energy of the students towards a fight for environmental protection. He decided that it was time to educate the Americans on the need to protect the environment. Thus Earth Day was born in 1970, and public environmentalawareness took centre stage. On 22ndApril 1970, millions of Americans took to the street and thousands of students marched to appeal for a healthy, sustainable environment. There was now a new synergy(协同作用) among different groups which had previously been fighting their causes related to the environment. Their fight for environmental conservation became so overwhelming that affected businesses were forced to follow environmental standards if they wanted to continue their operations. As it became more apparent that environmental issues were not just localized ones but a global concern, the year 1990 saw Earth Day reach out to many more around the world. Earth Day 1990 helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit inRio de Janeiro, bringing together many nations for a united effort towards protecting the environment.12. Earth Day united people to fight for environmental protection.C. It was the side effects of high productivity that led Nelson to take action.D. The 1992 United Nations Earth Summit made Earth Day known to more countries.15. However, it is not clear whether the link between teen relationships and lifetime health is causal(因果的)-it could be that other factors, such as different family backgrounds, might contribute to both relationship problems in adolescence and to poor health in adulthood. Also, most research has focused on teens' relationships with their peers(同龄人), rather than on their relationships with teachers. To explore those questions further, Kim analyzed data on nearly 20,000 participants from the Add Health study, a national study in theU.S.that followed participants from seventh grade into early adulthood. The participant pool included more than 3,400 pairs of siblings(兄弟姐妹). As teens, participants answered questions, like “How often have you had trouble getting along with other students and your teachers?" As adults, participants were asked about their physical and mental health.Kim found that participants who had reported better relationships with both their peers and teachers inmiddle and high school also reported better physical and mental health in their mid-20s. However, when he controlled for family background by looking at pairs of siblings together, only the link between good teacher relationships and adult health remained significant. The results suggest teacher relationships are more important than previously realized and that schools should invest in training teachers on how to build warm and supportive relationships with their students. "This is not something that most teachers receive much training in," Kim said, “but it should be.”8. What does the underlined word “implications" in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Recipes.B. Habits.C. Benefits.D. Risks.9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A. Poor health in adolescence.B. Limitations of the previous research.C. Teens' relationships with their peers.D. Factors affecting health in adulthood.10. What does Kim's research show?A. Good adult health depends on teens' good teachers.B. Good family background promises long-term adult health.C. Healthy peer relationships leads to students' academic success.D. Positive student-teacher relationship helps students' adult health.11. Where does this text probably come from?A.
