Thesecondcoming
Near the end of his ministry,Jesus told his disciples that he would leave them for a while, but that he would return again . Christian scholars do not agree on the time of Jesus' return, nor on the manner by which Jesus will return. Jesus told his followers that no one will know the time of his return. so all believers must be prepared at all times. Paul promised that the return of Jesus would be good news both to those who are alive and to those who have died.It will be a time when all believers throughout all history will be brought together into the presence of God through Christ.

Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand,
A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Commentary
Because of its stunning, violent imagery and terrifying ritualistic language, “The Second Coming” is one of Yeats’ most famous and most anthologized poems; it is also one of the most thematically obscure and difficult to understand. (It is safe to say that very few people who love this poem could paraphrase its meaning to satisfaction.)

The Second Coming - . YeatsTurning and turning in the widening gyreThe falcon cannot hear the falconer; The opening lines of "The Second Coming" introduce two major symbols in the poem which work to represent the sense that contemporary society has lost control. The symbol of the gyre represents eternity. As the present society draws to a close, Yeats se es the gyre of eternity widening. At the birth of a new era the motion of the gyre is narrow. The falcon represents the role of ma n and current society. As the falcon travels the motion of the gyre, it becomes less aware of its master, the falconer, who represen ts the order and structure in society. This implies that Yeats's notion of contemporary society is being destroyed by its lack of order, or anarchy. Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,These lines confirm the above idea by showing that without order "Things fall apart." Society's center dissolves as the gyre widens, introducing anarchy. The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhereThe ceremony of innocence is drowned;|In these lines the conflict between order and anarchy continues. The image of the "blood-dimmed tide" is a violent one which drowns the "ceremony of innocence." Here again, the reader will note that the ceremony, or the ordered part of society is destroyed by the chaotic, violent side. The best lack all conviction, while the worstAre full of passionate intensity. These lines further explore the chaos and violence of the poem's society. Humanity has been divided into the "best" and the "worst," and as one would expect in this dying civilization the worst of humanity holds power fueled by "passionate intensity."Surely some revelation is at hand;Surely the Second Coming is at hand.In these lines the speaker contemplates the violence in society as a sign of Christ's prediction of the second coming, but the near-repetition and the question-like quality of the lines imply that the speaker is not at all certain of his guess. The Second Coming! Hardly are those words outWhen a vast image out of Spritus MundiHere the speaker experiences a vision similar to the one experienced by the apostle John with regards to the Beast of the Apocalypse. The speaker's vision comes out of the Spiritus Mundi which means literally "spirit of the world." For Yeats, the Spiritus Mundi was similar to Carl Jung's idea of the collective unconscious. It is a storehouse of symbols buried in the unconscious which are received from some higher power.Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desertA shape with lion body and the head of a man,~The speaker's horrific vision is of a supernatural creature with a body that is half-lion and half-man[griffin]. This beast represents the new god of the new era. As stated earlier in the poem, order has been destroyed and now is replaced by a supernatural being who combines the image of humanity with a violent, disturbing image of nature. Note also that this vision is set in a desert landscape. This implies that the coming era will create a dry, withered existence.A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,Is moving its slow thighs, while all about itReel shadows of the indignant desert birds. In these lines the beast is given qualities that seem lifeless. It is described as pitiless, the opposite of what Christ represents. Notice the ominous description of it's movements. This dark mood is continued with the image of the desert birds circling close by. These birds seem to be a transformation of the falcon earlier in the poem. As scavenger birds they wait to profit from the death and destruction. The darkness drops again; but now I knowThat twenty centuries of stony sleepwere vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,Slouches towards Bethlehem to be bornIn the last lines of the poem the speaker forsees the Christian era, described as "twenty centuries of stony sleep," taken over and destroyed by this "rough" god whose chaotic image represents the opposite of Christian order. It "slouches" towards Christ's birthplace as if to annihilate the very beginnings of the Christian era. In doing so, the cycle completes and the new, nightmarish era begins.William Butler Yeats, "The Second Coming" (1921)“The Second Coming” 1921…In this poem, we see Yeats' interest in synthesizing several different world views into one global theory of human history. Towards this end, Yeats studied Hinduism, Celtic history, Christianity, Buddhism, and the occult. Like many of his contemporaries -- Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and James Joyce, for example -- Yeats sought to discover and create a unified theory of world history. We can understand this goal if we consider the historical context: in the wake of World War I, most Europeans and Americans found their world views badly shaken. Yeats sought to put the pieces of European culture back together by discovering their origins in world literature and religions.Yeats came to believe in a cyclical theory of history as he studied comparative history and religion. Indeed, circles are a repeated motif in "The Second Coming" and in his other publications. The title of "The Second Coming" suggests that the poem will depict the Apocalypse, described in Revelation. But biblical history is linear, not cyclical: it has a beginning (Genesis), a turning point (the birth and crucifixion of Christ), and an endingprophesied by the Revelation of St John the Divine. Thus, although the title and much of the poem's language and imagery echo biblical descriptions, its connection to the vision of St John remains obscure. The speaker of the poem seems, at best, doubtful of what he sees: he is a visionary who is unable to understand his vision. The reader shares this confusion in part because the poem begins in medias res: we are plunged into the speaker's vision without any preparation. We do not learn, for example, that the poem describes a vision until line 18, when we learn that the vision itself has vanished. As you read the poem, consider first the images the speaker describes. What do they have in common How can we interpret them What do they seem to foretell Then consider the speaker's commentary on his vision: what explanation -- if any -- do the final four lines offer1. Does the poem have a regular rhyme scheme If not, what near rhymes can you identify What is the effect of this form, or lack thereof (20 points)2. Does the poem have a regular meter (10 points)3. Define the following words and phrases as they are used in this poem (don't just copy a dictionary definition). Write a sentence or two on each one: "gyre", "anarchy", "Spiritus Mundi", "pitiless", and "slouch". (20 points: 4 points each)5. After you have read the poem to yourself, read it aloud to another person or have someone read it aloud to you. Comment briefly on the waysin which hearing the poem read aloud affected your understanding of it.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
一准是某种启示已近在眼前;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,

Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again ; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast,
its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
