Many scientists today are convinced that life exists elsewhere in the universe---life probably much like that on our own planet. They reason in the following way.As far as astronomers can determine, the entire universe is built of the same matter. They have no reason to doubt that matter obeys the same laws in every part of the universe. Therefore, it is reasonable to guess that other stars, with their own planets, were born in the same way as our own solar system. What we know of life on earth suggests that life will arise wherever the proper conditions exist.Life requires the right amount and kind of atmosphere. This eliminates(除去) all those planets in the universe that are not about the same size and weight as the earth. A smaller planet would lose its atmosphere; a larger one would hold too much of it.Life also requires a steady supply of heat and light. This eliminates double stars, or stars that flare up suddenly. Only single stars that are steady sources of heat and light like our sun would qualify. Finally, life could evolve(进化) only if the planet is just the right distance from its sun. With a weaker sun than our own, the planet would have to be closer to it. With a stronger sun, it would have to be farther away.If we suppose that every star in the universe has a family of planets, then how many planets might support life? First, eliminate those stars that are not like our sun. Next eliminate most of their planets; they are either too far from or too close to their suns. Then eliminate all those planets which are not the same size and weight as the earth. Finally, remember that the proper conditions do not necessarily mean that life actually does exist on a planet. It may not have begun yet, or it may have already died out. This process of elimination seems to leave very few planets on which earthlike life might be found. However, even if life could exist on only one planet in a million, there are so many billions of planets that this would still leave a vast number on which life could exist.(1)The existence of life depends on all of the following factors EXCEPT .A.the right amount of atmosphereB.our own solar systemC.steady heat and lightD.the right distance from the sun(2)Which of the following statements is INCORRECT?A.The planet must be as big and heavy as the earth.B.Proper conditions are essential to the existence of life.C.Double stars can provide steady light and heat.D.The distance between a planet and its sun should be right.(3)What kind of planet might NOT support life?A.Most of the planets of the stars.B.Stars similar to our sun.C.Planets similar to the earth.D.Planets with proper conditions.(4)At the end of the passage the author suggests that .A.it is impossible for life to exist on planetsB.earthlike life could only exist on a few planetsC.life could exist on only one planet in a millionD.life could exist on a great number of planets【答案】(1)B(2)C(3)A(4)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,整个宇宙都是由同一种物质构成的,物质在宇宙的每一部分都遵循同样的规律。

在AThe Mandarin (普通话)speaking figure spins around a 360degree restaurant scene in an artificial intelligencedriven instruction program that looks like a giant video game. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute students testing the technology move inside the 12foothigh projection (投影) to order virtual bean curd from the panda waiter, chat with Beijing market sellers and practice Tai chi by mirroring moves of a watchful teacher.“Definitely less anxiety than mess ing it up with a real human being,”says Rahul Divekar, a computer science graduate student. “So compared to that anxiety, this is a lot more easy.”The Mandarin Project is a joint enterprise of RPI and IBM. Cognitive and Immersive Systems Laboratory researchers are developing a sort of smart room that can understand students' words, answer their questions and observe their gesture s. Lessons are presented as games or tasks, like ordering a meal.Divekar orders Peking duck —“Beijing kaoya” — and the panda fetch es the virtual dish. Divekar says the food is good —“Cai hen hao chi” — but he can't pay the bill. No problem, the panda replies —“Ni keyi xi pan zi” — you can wash the dishes.Other scenes include an outdoor market and a garden, each a high-tech twist on cultural immersion.“Our plan is to complete several scenes of real life in China, to let the student be able to have a virtual trip over there,”says Hui Su, director of the lab at RPI.Tests on the room with students studying Mandarin will continue this school year as they work on additional scenes, including an airport. A six-week course is being readied for the summer. The Mandarin Project is notable for its scale and complexity. Computers interpret speech and gesture to keep a dialogue going. When a student points to a picture and asks “What's that?”computers can come up with an answer. Still, language teachers need not fear for their jobs just yet. Developers of the Mandarin Project say it isn't advanced enough right now to completely replace classroom instruction.RPI president Shirley Ann Jackson foresee s the same type of technology being applied to other space s, such as corporate boardrooms. “We're not at the end of the line,”Jackson says, “but closer to the beginning.”1.What is the advantage of learning via the Mandarin Project?A.It is thrilling.B.It is relaxing.C.It is effective. D.It is demanding.2.How do students learn Chinese in the Mandarin Project?A.By doing tests in the smart rooms.B.By learning from language teachers.C.By playing video games with Chinese.D.By conducting tasks in designed situations.3.Which of the following scenes is to be developed?A.Ordering food.B.Practicing Tai chi.C.Waiting at the airport.D.Buying things in a market.4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.Language teachers will be jobless soon.B.The technology has a promising future.C.The technology has come to an end.D.More foreigners will learn Chinese.BLanguages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers,small, tightly knit (联系)groups developed their own pattern s of speech independent of each other. Some language expert s believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education. Especially globalization and better communications in the past few decade s, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English,Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zone s have relatively few languages. Often spoken by many people while hot wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 Languages: the Americas about 1,000,Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800.The median number (中位数)of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half th e worlds’ languages are spoken by fewer people than that.Already well over 400 of the total of, 6,800 languages are close to extinction(消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers),Chiapaneco in Mexico(150). Lipan Apache in the United States(two or three)or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.5.What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?A.They developed very fast.B.They were large in number.C.They had similar patterns.D.They were closely connected.6.Which of the following best explains “dominant” underlined in paragraph 2?A.Complex. B.Advanced.C.Powerful. D.Modern.7.How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present?A.About 6,800.B.About 3,400.C.About 2,400.D.About 1,200.8.What is the main idea of the text?A.New languages will be created.B.Peoples lifestyles are reflected in languages.C.Human development results in fewer languages.D.Geography determines language evolution.CLanguage learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. Previous research found positive results on the use of them. But these apps mainly concentrated on study with learners who had signed up for language courses and they only worked as after-school support, so the results were not always reliable. A recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out aimed to find out if users can actually learn a language with an app.Busuu provides learning material s for 12 different languages. It offers a special model where some content isavailable for free while some content is not. We find that its users are an even mix of men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level as there is a decrease in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad. Female users tend to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users.Getting any feedback on Busuu depends on whether your answer is correct or not. While it is helpful, this is not the sort of feedback language teachers prefer, as it does not explain why the answer is right or wrong. In spite of this, feedback in the app is very highly rated.More than 92% of respondent s state that the app has met their expectations and 86% rate the app very highly. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance anxiety that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.9.The results of the former research weren't always dependable because ________.A.it was only carried out before classB.it didn't consider users in classC.it just focused on positive resultsD.it used out-of-date methods10.What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text?A.All the content is free to use.B.Most users consider it satisfying.C.It's used by more advanced learners.D.It's more popular with female learners.11.Which of the following can probably replace the underlined word “address” in the last paragraph?A.Deal with.B.Write down.C.Turn to. D.Speak of.12.What is the main idea of the text?A.Students won't suffer anxiety in learning languages by using Busuu.B.Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners.C.Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers.D.Students should be required to use apps for homework after class.

1.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read."The history of the world is but the biography (传记) of great men," argued Thomas Carlyle, the advocate of what has come to be known as the "Great Man Theory of History." This theory suggests that the broader movements and outline of history all go back to the leadership of great individuals who had unique influence on their times. Whether or not Carlyle's theory proves true is debatable, but that certain individuals cast long shadows is not.As one who is entrusted with a leadership position, I find it profitable to read of others who have led. Wherever you find me, you'll likely find a good biography nearby. Why is this the case? First, I find good biographies fascinating. I'll occasionally read a novel, but I've never been overly drawn to fiction. I have found myself unable to sleep while in the struggle of the Battle of Britain in William Manchester's The Last Lion. For me, not to read biographies would rob me of pleasure in my life.Second, I find good biographies informative. A good biographer tells not only the story of a person, but also of their times. Reading a good biography is like wandering through an intellectual shopping mall. The first store is what drew you there, but you will be pleasantly surprised along the way at what other items grab your attention. You'll find no better account of the British Empire at its peak than the opening chapters of Manchester's Visions of Glory, volume one of his The Last Lion. Strictly speaking, a biography is but a slice of history.Third, I find good biographies relaxing. Winston Churchill once noted a man who works with his hands should have a hobby that engages his mind, and a man who works with his mind should have a hobby that engages his hands. Another way to apply Churchill's saying is to combine technical, pen-in-hand vocational reading with leisurely biographical reading. Indeed, few things are more relaxing to me than winding down the evening and entering into another world. This is why I love reading good biographies, and why I pity the person who neglects them. Don't be counted among their number.(1)What is implied in the first paragraph?A. The author finds Carlyle's theory undebatable.B. Carlyle believes great men alone cannot create history.C. It is debatable whether one should read great men's biographies.D. The author agrees that history is greatly influenced by certain men.(2)What does the underlined phrase "other items" in the third paragraph refer to?A. good biographiesB. stories of certain timesC. the volumes of The Last LionD. the chapters of the British Empire(3)Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. The author considers biographical reading enjoyable.B. The author can travel to another world in the evening.C. The author has fought many battles during his lifetime.D. The author profits commercially by reading biographies.(4)What is the author's main purpose in writing the article?A. To analyze the benefits of vocational reading.B. To introduce to readers his unique reading strategies.C. To present great men's history through biography reading.D. To recommend biography reading through his own experiences.【答案】(1)D(2)B(3)A(4)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇议论文,作者阐述了喜欢读好的传记的原因。

Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame throughout his life. But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.He began to walk to school, and then run to school, to run for the joy of running. Later in college he was on the track team.In February 1934, in New York City's Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run-this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world's fastest mile.A good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in one's self, Glenn Cunningham continues to be an inspiration for many, and his story, a brilliant evidence to how one can bounce back even when all difficulties are piled against one, to the degree that death seemed the preferable option.(1)The first paragraph is intended to ________.A. present an argumentB. make preparations for statementC. arouse readers' interestD. function as a brief introduction(2)What was the doctor's opinion about Glenn?A. But as I began to grow older, this changed. All this happened on the Bike Safety Day. It is supposed to be a fun day at school when all of us kids bring our bikes to school and the school provides us with the opportunity to ride outside and learn proper bike safety. Sounds like fun, right? No. In fact, it caused me to panic. What was I going to say when my friends asked me about my training wheels? With the pressure of everyone seeing my training wheels, I determined to let them go. This was the first big change I'd ever made on my own.I went to my parents and told them all about my dilemma. They were more than happy to help. We went outside and got my bike. Instead of running away and hiding behind, I stood in front of my bike and took great pride in my decision as my dad removed the training wheels.I got on and steadied myself. My heart raced but my feet and hands were calm. My dad started to push before my feet even moved and suddenly I was off. The fear faded away and a relaxed mind came into its place. It was crazy to think how quickly I learned something that took so long for me to even try!My confidence soared. This was going to be the start of a brand new world for me. Linux is an open-source operating system widely used in personal computers and other hardware."Harmony is a next-generation operating system designed to address the challenge," Yu said, adding that it will be able to support a wide range of application situations, including smart TVs, automobiles and wearables. The internet of things refers to a network of devices and other objects that can connect with each other and exchange data.Yu said the US government's restrictions have accelerated the company's marketing of the system, which now has about 4,000 employees working on it.The senior executive said Harmony can be used in its smartphones. But Android is still Huawei's preferred choice for handsets if the company is allowed to use it."But when Android is not available, Harmony can be applied immediately to smartphones. Harmony is ready," Yu added.Jia Mo, an analyst at market research company Canalys, said even if Huawei does not use Harmony in its smartphones in the short term, its smartwatches and smart TVs can be equipped with Harmony to widen its use and accumulate more experience in building an ecosystem."Also, more importantly, Huawei chose to build Harmony into an open-source operating system and allow it to be compatible with Android. Thus Harmony will be more accepted by current Android users. This will prevent Huawei from repeating the fate of Microsoft in promoting smartphone systems," Jia said. Microsoft failed to popularize the use of its Windows system in smartphones years ago.(1)What is the significance of the Harmony OS?A. It symbolizes Huawei has finished its own software ecosystem.B. It may reduce the threat from US government's restrictions.C. It will accumulate more experience in building an ecosystem.D. 一、高中英语阅读理解1.(2019•全国Ⅱ)阅读理解“You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids lacrosse(长曲棍球)club.I guess that there's probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren't even on … At this point the unwilling parent speaks up,“Alright. Yes, I'll do it.”I'm secretly relieved because I know there's real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社区)as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services provides a real joy. Volunteering just feels so good.In that sense, I'm pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I'd freely like to admit. However, if others benefit in the process, and I get some reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies?(1)What can we infer about the parent from her reply in paragraph 1?A. She knows little about the club.B. She isn't good at sports.C. She just doesn't want to volunteer.D. She's unable to meet her schedule.(2)What does the underlined phrase“tug at the heartstrings”in paragraph 2 mean?A. Encourage team work .B. Appeal to feeling.C. Promote good deeds.D. Provide advice.(3)What can we learn about the parent from paragraph 3?A. She gets interested in lacrosse.B. She is proud of her kids.C. She'll work for another season.D. She becomes a good helper.(4)Why does the author like doing volunteer work?A. It gives her a sense of duty.B. It makes her very happy.C. It enables her to work hard.D.

At the age of seven, while his friends were spending pocket money on things like candy and toys, Jose Adolfo was busy saving money for more essential purchases. To try to get his peers to do the same, the youngster from Arequipa, Peru came up with the innovative idea of an eco-bank, which allows kids of all ages to gain economic independence—while also helping the environment.Established in 2012, the Bartselana Student Bank is the world's first bank for kids. To open an account, kids have to bring in at least 5 kilograms of solid waste (paper or plastic) and establish a savings goal. Once accepted, all bank "partners" are required to deposit(存储) at least one additional kilogram of recyclables on a monthly basis and meet other requirements, such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops. The waste collected is sold to local recycling companies, who, thanks to Jose, pay a higher-than-market rate for everything brought in by Bartselana Student Bank members. The funds received are placed in the individual's account until his/her savings goal is reached. The account holder can then withdraw his/her money, or choose to leave it and continue to grow for a bigger target. "At the beginning, my teachers thought I was crazy," Jose recalls. "They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present. Luckily. I had the support of the school principal."By 2013, the bank had over 200 members who brought in one ton of recyclable waste. Today, the eco-bank, which now has the support of several local institutions, has ten educational centers. They are designed to teach the over 3,000 members both finance and environmental management. On December 6, 2018, in response to the growing demand, Bartselana Student Bank began accepting applications from kids all across Peru.As the teenager says, "Together we can change the world. We just need an opportunity."(1)What is the purpose of the eco-bank?A. To involve kids in the management of the local recycling companies.B.

1.Which of the following statements is(not) true/correct?2.Which of the following is not mentioned?3.All of the following are true except...4.According to the passage,when/where/why/how/how/what/which,etc...?1.

TV Station helped Luo Lin to become Miss Asia.【解析】A、C和D项都可在原文找到答案,而B项原文所给的是:taken to Hongkong可判断不是moved to Hongkong with her parents,因此选B。
