新闻标题的特点
A brief introduction of Newspaper Headline:
Headlines are a significant part of news report. A good headline in itself is a good piece of brief news.
Good headlines are those which are concise, expressive, and attractive.
The function of headlines:
1. Summarize the news content
2. Beautify the layout (编排, 版面) of the newspaper
Headlines condense the most important contents of the news or news that is mostly worth our attention. Headlines serve as an ideal guide to readers.
The Characteristics of Newspaper Headlines
from aspects of words, grammar and rhetorical devices
1.Words
1) acronym and shortened words 2) colloquial and conversational words 3) midget words
1.1 Acronyms 缩写词
a.World Bank, IMF— Do They Help Or Hurt Third World
IMF= International Monetary Fund (联合国)国际货币基金组织
b. PM to see MPs over big factory closures
PM= Prime Minister; MPs= Members of Parliament首相会见议员商讨大工厂停闭问题c. QE2 may be sub‟s target
QE2= Queen Elizabeth II; here is the name of an ocean liner; sub= submarine

6. Jump Head Headlines 转页式标题
——The headline is divided into two parts: original head and jump head.
——A original part is in one page, but after the body jumps pages, the original head will be changed into a jump head which uses different words from original one to express the same meaning.

Based on its meaning, headlines can be divided into:
1.Straight Headline直接类标题
——Most common and easy to understand.
Railroad Workers Strike in Argentina 阿根廷铁路工人罢工
2 Men Jailed for Murder两人因谋杀入狱
2. Questioning Headline问题类标题
——Most of them do not have meanings of questioning;
——They often give a clue of possibility or writer‟s doubt a bout the reality of some facts.
Oil Price to Rise? 油价将要上涨?
Police Allowed Jail Break? 警察默许的越狱?
3. Feature Headline特写类标题
——It is used when a piece of news is unusual or readers will be interested in it. ——Such headlines are not easy to understand, sometimes the whole news should be read.
Down in the Mouth
Down in the Mouth figuratively means to be very sad.垂头丧气,沮丧
However, the news literally refers to the mouth. This report is about a kind of vaccine疫苗, which is studied out and will be used for preventing teeth decay.
The Man who Reign over UK’s Queen
Reign means rule over and it is only used for a queen or a king. So the connection of “man” and “reign” may get readers confused, then they may be eager to find why. Until the whole news are read, they find the man is just a captain of a ship named Queen Mary.
4. Quoted Headline引用类标题
——Quote words from interviewers or reporters or other people heard by writers.
“We Have to Save Our People”
——Choose one sentence,some words or one word from the whole news as a headline.
“I Have A Dream”
Some words in a headline with quotation marks are usually not their original meanings.
“Norse Invasion”
The headline does not indicate the invasion by north Europe in ancient. It really tells that Norway men go shopping and touring in a large group as invasion. So this so-called invasion is not its original meaning.
