中国传媒大学考博英语模拟试题:考博英语阅读训练(4)China reins in economic expansionChina's growth in fixed-asset investment and its money supply slowed considerably in August, providing firm evidence that the government's tightening measures were reining in the country's rapid economic expansion.examdaUrban fixed-asset investment in August rose21.5per cent compared with a year ago,a marked slowdown from the30.5per cent expansion from January through July and the slowest for a single month since December2004.M2,the broad indicator for money supply,rose17.9 per cent last month compared with18.4per cent in July and June.China's economy has been growing at a record pace, expanding by11.3per cent in the second quarter.Beijing officials and many economists are concerned that such growth rates are not sustainable in the longer term. The latest economic data, which were released by Qiu Xiaohua, commissioner of China's National Bureau of Statistics, suggest Beijing has been able to control excessive lending and investment to sectors such as real estate that are especially at risk of overheating.Beijing is using a combination of monetary and administrative controls in its attempts to moderate growth.Since late April,China's central bank has twice raised benchmark lending rates and bank reserve requirements.Yesterday it also mopped up a record Rmb225bn($28.3bn)in its regular open market operations.examdaSu Ning, the deputy central bank governor, said this week at an international conference in Beijing that the country's money supply was slowing dramatically as a result of these measures.(PS:The way to contact yumingkaobo TEL:si ling ling-liu liu ba-liu jiu qi ba QQ:772678537) At the same time,China's leaders are trying to control unnecessary production-for instance by limiting land rights and enforcing environmental standards in key industries such as steel, cement and automobiles.Beijing is also worried about overlending to urban property projects, including residences, offices and industrial parks, and the threat it could lead to artificially high prices and excess supply. While trying to temper credit and investment growth,Beijing is also attempting to stimulate consumer spending, since it believes a strong middle class will be a key driver of future growth.China's statistics body said August retail sales were up13.8per cent,a rate consistent with that of the previous two months.Demand for oil products, jewellery, automobiles and building has been particularly strong.一、参考译文:8月份中国固定资产投资及货币供应量增长速度明显放缓,这有力地证明,政府的紧缩举措,正在抑制中国经济的迅速扩张。

Mark the letter of your choice with a single bar across the square brackets on your Machine-scoring Answer Sheet.Passage 1Small, pink and very ugly. Hardly the qualities of a star, but they describethe deformed mouse that was the media darling at a recent science exhibition in Beijing. With a complex tissue structure in the shape of a human ear grafted on to its back, the rosy rodent was a stunning symbol of the serious strides China is making in the field of biotechnology.China is fast applying the latest life-science techniques learned from the West to aggressively pursue genome research. It's establishing its own centers of technical excellence to build a scientific base to compete directly with the United States and Europe. With a plentiful supply of smart young scientists at home and lots of interest abroad biotechnology is on the brink of a boom in China. And in the view of foreign scientists, Beijing is playing a clever hand, maximizing the opportunities open to them. For the moment, the cooperation exists mostly with Europe and the U.S. But Asia's other biotech leaders, Japan, Singapore and Korea, also are recognizing China's potential as an attractive low-cost base to conduct research. These partnerships—and China's advancement in the field of biotechnolo-gy—could help benefit the rest of Asia: China's rapid progress in improving crop yields will address food-security concerns in the region. In addition, China is more likely to focus on developing cheap technology that its predominantly poor population—and those of other Asian countries—can afford. There remain, however, serious barriers to the development of a strong biotech industry. Among them are a poor domestic legal framework, weak enforcement of intellectual-property rights and loose adherence to international standards. China is a signatory of the International Bio Safely Protocol, which should mean adherence to global standards governing the conduct of field trials. But some observers are skeptical. “The regulations look goo d, but I haven't met one scientist who believes they are being fully adhered to,” says a European science analyst. If shortcuts are taken, then some of the recent scientific achievements trumpeted in the official press may never make it to market. But no matter how strict lab test are, other problems lie in wait. For example, there is a number of tasks it would take years to fulfill in the patents office, says one lawyer, leaving innovators with little protection if they take a product to market in China.56. The mouse on display is most significant in that__________.A. it has an ear in the shape of a human earB. it is unusually small and ugly as a starC. it is the focus of the media at the exhibitionD. it indicates China's progress in biotechnology57. The phrase “on the brink of a boom” (in boldface in Paragraph 2) in thecontext means __________.A. having an edge in competitionB. in great demandC. on the way to successD. preparing for challenge58. In the field of biotechnology China is thought to__________.A. have been making an utmost effort learning from the WestB. have become a country among the advancedC. have been able to rival the United States and EuropeD. have launched a biotechnological revolution59. Japan, Singapore, and Korea will also be interested in cooperating withChina in biotechnology because__________.A. it has made extraordinary contributions to the worldB. it has large supplies of talents and advanced research centersC. its research focuses on the benefits of all Asian countriesD. its cooperation with the US and Europe proves profitable60. Science analysts are worried that China, in the course of biotech development,__________.A. might refuse to join efforts to adhere to global standardsB. may put too much emphasis on developing cheap technologyC. cannot afford to fulfill years of tasks in assessing patentsD. may not seriously follow the International Bio Safely Protocol61. As implied in the context, the shortcuts that might be taken include__________.A. publicizing recent achievements in the official pressB. the protection of innovators with their productsC. the violation of intellectual-property rightsD. making lab tests as strict as possiblePassage 2The sizzling streams of sunlight were just beautifully glimmering down on the crisp green schoolyard. Such a wonderful day that was. Nothing could have ruined it. Little Jimmy, since it was such a wonderful day, decided to go to the corner store and but himself a little treat. As Jimmy started walking over to the store, clouds flocked over the dazzling sun and the sudden pitch dark meant to trouble. On the other side of the road were three white boys from Jimmy's same school. Upon recognizing Jimmy, the boys ran over the street to where he was.“Hey Negro, what's up?” one of the white boys said.“Did your mamma pack you enough to eat today?” another hooted.“Just leave me alone,” Little Jimmy said.“Oh no, Jimmy's really getting pist off!?” the first boy retaliated.“Just shove off and let me be,” Jimmy answered. It is like this everyday, everywhere, and every time, people suffer discrimination. All because they have differences amongst each other. Different beliefs, different cultures, different skin colors, all of these act like building blocks to help construct what we know as Racism.Racism has become one of the many burdens amongst multi-cultural worlds like Canada and the States. Racism is a part of each every one of us. No doubt, we are all racist, but the term racism has been used too loosely. Racism has been mutated to such an extent that it could be a reason for war, a symbol of terrorism, and even an excuse for neglecting. Is that all there is to it? No actually it is just the beginning. Racism is just like warfare in which there is no shelter and nobody is neutral.Nobody is exempt form this demon. He has haunted us with a bitter curse. On one occasion I remember, nobody would play with me at school. I would walk around by myself and ask people if we could play together. Everywhere that I went, like the process of induction, everyone would avoid me, like two inducted poles with the same polarity, they would just shimmer off into the distance and continue to do whatever they're doing. Because of racial differences, they neglect me.People are afraid of the unknown, and it is this difference amongst people that spread rumors and distrust amongst people. Corrupting our thoughts and reasons, we get accustomed to thinking differences are omens. Amongst smaller kids, there is no difficulty in getting them to all play together. Their thoughts are not totally corrupted as others. Probably the demon has no time to bother with smaller children.62. With the description of the weather and Jimmy's feeling about it the authorintends to show that __________.A. what a happy world it is for humansB. what an innocent boy Jimmy wasC. what an unusual thing hat was to happen to JimmyD. what a wonderful world that people have ignored63. From the conversation with the three white boys, we learn that Jimmy__________.A. must have offended them beforeB. was a pleasant boy to be talked toC. was being humiliated for being blackD. must have got used to their behaviors64. According to the author, Racism__________.A. leads to a world with no varietyB. does not see the differences between culturesC. hinders the world's economic developmentD. does not tolerate coexistence of different cultures65. By saying “No doubt, we are all racist” (in boldface in Paragraph 3) theauthor admits that __________.A. we are all warlike by natureB. we all discriminate against other peoplesC. we are all proud of our own race and nationD. we all focus on the difference between races66. To be continued, the passage would probably be followed by a paragraphthat deals with __________.A. how children's thoughts are corrupted by racism as they growB. the author's far more miserable experience of being neglectedC. how the black people should unite to fight against the WhitesD. the education of smaller children to behave pleasantly to each other67. Which of the following can best describe the tone of teh passage?A. Provocative.B. Indignant.C. Sentimental.D. Sarcastic.Passage 3This week marks the 10th anniversary of the Alar apple scare, in which many American consumers were driven into a panic following the release of a report by an environmental organization claiming that apples containing the chemical Alar posed a serious health threat to preschoolers. The report was disseminated through a PR (Problem Report) campaign and bypassed any legitimate form of scientific peer review. Introduced to the American public by CBS“60 Minutes,”the unsubstantiated claims in the report led some school disricts to remove apples from their school lunch programs and unduly frightened conscientious parents trying to develop good eating habits for their children.Last month,Consumers Union released a report warning consumers of the perils of consuming many fruits and vegetables that frequentlycontained“unsafe” levels of pesticide residues. This was especially true for children, they claimed. Like its predecessor 10 years earlier, the Consumers Union report received no legitimate scientific peer review and the public's first exposure to it was through news coverage. Not only does such reporting potentially drive children for consuming healthful fruits and vegetables, the conclusions were based on a misleading interpretation of what constitutes a “safe” level of exposure. Briefly, the authors used values known as the “chronic reference doses.” set by the U. S. environmental Protection Agency, as their barometers of safely. Used appropriately, these levels represent the maximum amount of pesticide that could be consumed daily for life without concern. For a 70-year lifetime, for example, consumers would have to ingest this average amount of pesticide every day for more than 25,000 days. It is clear, as the report points out, that there are days on which kids may be exposed to more; it is also clear that there are many more days when exposure is zero. Had the authors more appropriately calculated the cumulative exposures for which the safety standards are meant to apply, there would have been no risks and no warnings.Parents should feel proud, rather than guilty, of providing fruits and vegetables for their children. It is well established that a diet rich in such foods decreases the risk of heart disease and cancer. Such benefits dramatically overwhelm the theoretical risks of tiny amounts of pesticides in food. So keep serving up the peaches, apples, squash, grapes and pears.68. In the Alar apple scare, many Americans were frightened because__________.A. scientists warned that apples were dangerousB. many school children became ill after eating applesC. it was reported that apples were harmful to healthD. apples were discovered to have too much pesticide69. The warning message about the Alar apple was given__________.A. by Consumers UnionB. by a health centerC. through an news agencyD. through the government70. The last month report parallels that on the Alar apple scare in that__________.A. neither really caused worry among the publicB. neither underwent a scientific peer reviewC. neither provided statistical supportsD. neither aimed for the public good71. The “chronic reference doses” (in boldfac e in Paragraph 3) refer to__________.A. the safe levels of pesticide exposureB. the amount of fruits one can safely eatC. one's digestive capacity for fruitsD. health values of fruits and vegetables72. With regard to the pesticides in food, this passage seems to argue that__________.A. parents should keeps their children from the food with pesticidesB. they should be applied to fruits and vegetables wit cautionC. more research needs to be done on their harmfulness to healthD. they are not as threatening as said to children most of the time73. The primary purpose of this passage is to explain that__________.A. not all reports on food are scientifically soundB. it is important for the public to know the risks of pesticidesC. vegetables and fruits can be harmful to children's healthD. there should be no public concern over pesticidesPassage 4Abortion. The word alone causes civil conversation to flee the room. This is largely because the prochoice and pro-life positions are being defined by their extremes, by those who scream accusations instead of arguments.More reasonable voices and concerns, on both sides of the fence, are given little attention. For example, pro-life extremists seem unwilling to draw distinctions between some abortions and others, such as those resulting from rape with an underage child. They would make no exception in the recent real-life case of a woman who discovered in her fifth month that her baby would be born dead due to severe disabilities. On the other hand, pro-choice extremists within feminism insist on holding inconsistent positions. The pregnant woman has an unquestionable right to abort, they claim. Yet if the biological father has no say whatsoever over the woman's choice, is it reasonable to impose legal obligations upon him for child support? Can absolute legal obligation adhere without some sort of corresponding legal rights? The only hope for progress in the abortion dialogue lies in the great excluded middle, in the voices of average people who see something wrong with a young girl forced to bear the baby of a rapist.Any commentary on abortion should include a statement of the writer's position. I represent what seems to b ea growing“middle ground” in pro-choice opinion. Legally, I believe in the right of every human being to medically control everything under his or her own skin. Many things people have a legal right to do, however, seem clearly wrong to me: adultery, lying to friends, walking past someone who is bleeding on the street. Some forms of abortion fall into that category. Morally speaking, my doubts have become so extreme that I could not undergo the procedure past the first three months and I would attempt to dissuade friends from doing so.Fanatics on both sides are using reprehensible and deceitful tactics. An honest dialogue on abortion must start by re-setting the stage, by denouncing the approaches that block communication.74. According to the passage, the pro-life and pro-choice positions on abortion are__________.A. complementary to each otherB. opposed to each otherC. similar in natureD. reconcilable in a way75. To a pro-life extremist,__________.A. all babies should be carried to termB. babies resulting form rape should not be bornC. deformed babies can be aborted when detectedD. an underage girl has no right to give birth76. According to the pro-choice position,__________.A. a pregnant woman cannot abort her baby if its father arees to keep itB. a pregnant woman has an absolute right of choice over an abortionC. the baby's father also has a say over its mother's choice of abortionD. the baby's father has an unalienable obligation to support the baby77. Who would insist that the baby be born whether or not it is the child of a rapist?A. The authorB. Average peopleC. A pro-choice advocateD. A pro-life extremist78. The author doubts the legal right to lie to friends as well as the one to__________.A. abort a fetus in its fifth monthB. view the photos of late-term abortionC. give birth to a baby in one's teenageD. dispose of what ever under one'sskin79. The author, as a “middle ground” person,__________.A. actually holds a mild pro-life opinionB. proposes that a rapist's baby never be bornC. advocates a serious dialogue on abortionD. denies the principle “a woman's body, a woman's right”Passage 5In the absence of optimism, we are left with nothing but critics, naysayers, and prophets of doom. When a nation expects the worst from its people and institutions, and its experts focus exclusively on faults, hope dies. Too many people spend too much tie looking down rather than up, finding fault with their country's political institutions, economic system, educational establishment, religious organizations, and—worst of all —with each other.Faultfinding expends so much negative energy that nothing is left over for positive action. It takes courage and strength to solve the genuine problems that afflict every society. Sure, there well always be things that need fixing. But the question is, Do you want to spend your time and energy tearing things down or building them up?The staging of a Broadway show could illustrate my point. Let's say a new production is about to open. A playwright has polished the script, investor have put up the money, and the theater ahs been rented. A director ahs been chosen, actors have been auditioned and selected, and the cast has been rehearsing for weeks. Set, lighting, and sound engineers have been hard at work. By the time opening night arrives, nearly a hundred people have labored tirelessly—all working long hours to make magic for their audience. On opening night ,four or five critics sit in the audience. If they pan it, the play will probably close in a matter if days or weeks. If they praise it, the production could go on for a long and successful run. In the end, success or failure might hinge on the opinion of a single person—someone who might be in a bad mood on opening night! What's wrong with this scene? In one sense, nothing. Critics have a legitimate role. The problem arises when we make critics our heroes or put them in control of our fate. When we empower the critic more than the playwright, something is wrong. It is much easier to criticize than to create. When we revere the critics of society, we eventually become a society of critics, and when that happens, there is no room left for constructive optimism.80. According to the author, critics usually__________.A. ignore minor imperfectionsB. overemphasize flawsC. see both sides of a coinD. pin their hopes onimprovements。

While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries (食品杂货), saving us from having to walk along long distances from where we live.I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people inour area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. 中国传媒大学考博英语-2(总分:80.00,做题时间:90分钟)一、{{B}}Part Ⅰ Listening Comprehension{{/B}}(总题数:4,分数:40.00)(略){{B}}Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension{{/B}}There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. In a purely biological sense, fear begins with the body's system for reacting to things that can harm us-- the so-called fight-or-flight response. "An animal that can't detect danger can't stay alive. "says Joseph LeDoux. Like animals, humans evolved with an elaborate mechanism for processing information about potential threats. At its core is a cluster of neurons (神经元)deep in the brain known as the amygdala(扁桃棱).LeDoux studies the way animals and humans respond to threats to understand how we form memories of significant events in our lives. The amygdala receives input from many parts of the brain, including regions responsible for retrieving memories. Using this information, the amygdala appraises a situation I think this charging dog wants to bite me--and triggers a response by radiating nerve signals throughout the body. These signals produce the familiar signs of distress: trembling, perspiration and fast--moving feet, just to name three. This fear mechanism is critical to the survival of all animals, but no one can say for sure whether beasts other than humans know they're afraid. That is all LeDoux says," if you put that system into a brain that has consciousness, then you get the feeling of fear."Humans, says Edward M. Hallowell, have the ability to call up images of bad things that happened in the past and to anticipate future events. Combine these higher thought processes with our hardwireddanger-detection systems, and you get a near-universal human phenomenon: worry. That's not necessarily a bad thing, says Hallowell. "When used properly, worry is an incredible device. "he says. After all, a little healthy worrying is okay if it leads to constructive action--like having a doctor look at that weird spot on your back.Hallowell insists, though, that there's a right way to worry. "Never do it alone, get the facts and then make a plan." he says. Most of us have survived a recession, so we're familiar with the belt-tightening strategies needed to survive a slump.Unfortunately, few of us have much experience dealing with the threat ofterrorism, so it's been difficult to get facts about how we should respond. That's why Hallowell believes it was okay for people to indulge some extreme worries last fall by asking doctors for Cipro(抗炭疽茵的药物)and buying gas masks.(分数:10.00)(1).The "so-called fight-or-flight response" (Line 2,Para. 1) refers to ______(分数:2.00)A.the biological process in which human beings' sense of self-defense evolvesB.the instinctive fear human beings feel when faced with potential dangerC.the act of evaluating a dangerous situation and making a quick decision √D.the elaborate mechanism in the human brain for retrieving information解析:[解析] 本题考查“文中第一段第二行中的‘so-called fight-or-flight response’的意思”。

中国传媒大学考博英语模拟试卷3(题后含答案及解析)

中国传媒大学考博英语模拟试卷3(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. Reading Comprehension 2. Structure and V ocabulary 3. English-Chinese Translation 4. WritingReading ComprehensionThis year the combined advertising revenues of Google and Yahoo! will rival the combined primetime ad revenues of America’s three big television networks, ABC, CBS and NBC predicts Advertising Age. It will, says the trade magazine, represent a “watershed moment”in the evolution of the internet as an advertising medium. A 30-second prime-time TV ad was once considered the most effective —and the most expensive —form of advertising. But that was before the internet got going. And this week online advertising made another leap forward. This latest innovation comes from Google, which has begun testing a new auction-based service for display advertising. Both Google and Yahoo! make most of their money from advertising. Auctioning keyword search-terms, which deliver sponsored links to advertisers’websites, has proved to be particularly lucrative. And advertisers like paid-search because, unlike TV, they only pay for results;they are charged when someone clicks on one of their links. Both Google and Yahoo! along with search-site rivals like Microsoft’s MSN and Ask Jeeves, are developing much broader ranges of marketing services. Google, for instance, already provides a service called Ad-Sense. It works rather like an advertising agency, automatically placing sponsored links and other ads on third-party websites. Google then splits the revenue with the owners of those websites, who can range from multinationals to individuals publishing blogs.as online journals are known. Google’s new service extends AdSense in three ways. Instead of Google’s software analyzing third-party websites to determine from their content what relevant ads to place on them, advertisement will instead be a-ble to select the specific sites where they want their ads to appear. This provides both more flexibility and control, says Patrick Keane, Google’s head of sales strategy. The second change involves pricing. Potential internet advertisers must bid for their ad to appear on a “cost-per-thousand”(known as CPM) basis. This is similar to TV commercials, where advertisers pay according to the number of people who are supposed to see the ad. But the Google system delivers a twist:CPM bids will also have to compete against rival bids for the same ad space from those wanting to pay on a “cost-per-click”basis, the way search terms are presently, sold. Click-through marketing tends to be aimed at people who already know they want to buy something and are searching for product and price information, whereas display advertising is more often used to persuade people to buy things in the first instance. The third change is that Google will now offer animated ads —but nothing too flashy or annoying, insists Mr. Keane. Such ads are likely to be more appealing to some the big-brand advertisers. Spurred on by the spread of faster broadband connections, such companies are becoming increasingly interested in so-called“rich-media” ads. like animation and video.1.By saying “It will represent a ‘ watershed moment’ in the evolution of the internet as an advertising me-dium” , the trade magazine suggests______.A.Google and Yahoo! share advertising revenues with television networksB.the success of Google and Yahoo takes a turning-point to online advertising C.America’s three big television networks play an important role in the development of advertising mediumD.Google and Yahoo! build up their status in advertising正确答案:B解析:本题问:商业杂志说“It will represent a‘watershed moment’in the evolution of the internet as anadvertising medium”意指什么。

2.单选题We can begin our discussion of “population as global issue” with what most persons mean when they discuss “the population problem”: too many people on earth and a too rapid increase in the number added each year. The facts are not in dispute. It was quite right to employ the analogy that likened demographic growth to “a long, thin powder fuse that burns steadily and haltingly until it finally reaches the charge and explodes.”To understand the current situation, which is characterized by rapid increases in population, it is necessary to understand the history of population trends. Rapid growth is a comparatively recent phenomenon. Looking back at the 8,000 years of demographic history, we find that populations have been virtually stable or growing very slightly for most of human history. For most of our ancestors, life was hard, often nasty, and very short. There was high fertility in most places, but this was usually balanced by high mortality. For most of human history, it was seldom the case that one in ten persons would live past forty, while infancy and childhood were especially risky periods. Often, societies were in clear danger of extinction because death rates could exceed their birthrates. Thus, the population problem throughout most of history was how to prevent extinction of the human race. This pattern is important to notice. Not only does it put the current problems of demographic growth into a historical perspective, but it suggests that the cause of rapid increase in population in recent years is not a sudden enthusiasm for more children, but an improvement in the conditions that traditionally have caused high mortality.Demographic history can be divided into two major periods: a time of long, slow growth which extended from about 8,000 BC. till approximately AD. 1650. In the first period of some 9600 years, the population increased from some 8 million to 500 million in 1650. Between 1650 and the present, the population has increased from 500 million to more than 4 billion. And it is estimated that by the year 2000 there will be 6.2 billion people throughout the world. One way to appreciate this dramatic difference in such abstract numbers is to reduce the time frame to something that is more manageable. Between 8000 BC and 1650, an average of only 50,000 persons was being added annually to the world’s population each year. At present, this number is added every six hours. The increase is about 80,000,000 persons annually.1. Which of the following demographic growth pattern is most suitable for the long, thin powder fuse analogy?2. 2022年考研考博-考博英语-中国传媒大学考试全真模拟易错、难点剖析AB卷(带答案)一.综合题(共15题)1.翻译题We have no idea if online ads workIn the summer of 2003, Viacom executive Mel Karmazin managed to sum up old media’s horror of the Internet with one of business lore’s greatest vulgar on-liners. Karmazin, a swaggering former ad salesman and onetime CBS Corporation president, had made an expedition to check out Silicon Valley's hottest young upstart: Google. Sitting in the future search giant’s offices, he listened in dismay as its founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and its CEO, Eric Schmidt, detailed the many ways their company could track and analyze the effectiveness of online advertising. This could not possibly be good for business, Karmazin thought, 1.It had always been nearly impossible for marketers to tell which of their ads worked and which didn’t and the less they knew, the more a network like CBS could charge for a 30-second spot. Art was far more profitable than science.A decade later, someone finally seems to be, well, messing with Google's own bag of tricks. Last year, a group of economists working with eBay’s internal research lab issued a massive experimental study with a simple startling conclusion: For a large, well-known brand, search ads are probably worthless. 2. This month, their findings were re-released as a working paper by the National Bureau of Economic Research and greeted with a round of coverage asking whether Internet advertising of any kind works at all.“We know a lot less than the advertising industry would like us to think we know," Steven Tadelis, one of the eBay study’s co-authors, told me.Ask Google. Facebook or Twitter, of course, and they’ll reliably bust out third-party research explaining that their ads work just fine, even if consumers don’t always click on them. An entire ecosystem of analytics companies, including big names like ComScore and Nielsen, has evolved to tell clients which online advertisements give them the biggest bang for their bucks, Especially cutting-edge firms, such as Dialogic. Have even found ways to draw correlations between the ads consumers see online and what they buy in stores. We are swimming in data. 3.And there are plenty of professionals out there happy to tell corporate America what all that data means, with the help of some fancy mathematical models. The problem, according to Tadelis and others, is that much of the data websites generate is more or less useless. Some of the problems are practically as ole as marking itself. For instance, companies like to run large ad campaigns during major shopping seasons, like Christmas. But if sale s double come December, it’s hard to say whether the ad or the holiday was responsible. Companies also understandably like to target audiences they think will like what they’re selling. But that always leads to the nagging question of whether the customer would have gone and purchased the product regardless. Economists call this issue “endogeneity.” Derek Thompson at the Atlantic dubs it the I-was-gonna-buy-it-anyway problem.”But the Internet also gunks up attempts at analysis in its own special ways. For instance, if somebody searches for “Amazon, banana slicer,” and clicks on a search ad that pops up right next to his results, chances are he would have made it to Amazon’s site without the extra nudge. Even if he never typed the word Ainzaon, he still might have gotten to the site through the natural power of search. 4.In the end, it all comes down to the evergreen challenge of distinguishing correlation (e.g a Faccebook user saw an ad and then bought some shoes) from causation (e.g., a Facebook user bought some shoes because he saw an ad). There is, however, a way to get around these hurdles. Run analytics companies don’t do that, relying instead on elaborate statistical regressions that try to flawed data. But it’s the route Tapeless—now a business professor at the University of California, Berkeley—and his collaborators took with eBay. 5. In their first test, the researchers looked at what would happen if the company stopped buying ads next to its own name, which seemed like the most obvious waste of money. To do so, they pulled the ads from Yahoo and MSN but left them running on Google. It turned out, the advertising made virtually no difference. Yet eBay was spending dollars every time a customer clicked an ad instead of the link sitting right below it.【答案】1. 营销人员通常几乎不可能告诉他们哪些广告有效,哪些没有。

3.单选题When I applied under Early Decision to the University of Pennsylvania four years ago, I was motivated by two powerful emotions: ambition and fear. The ambition was to fulfill my lifelong expectation of attending an Ivy League school; the fear was that without the advantage offered by Early Decision, I wouldn’t make the cut. A Penn admissions officer tol d me that the previous year they had accepted 45 percent of Early Decision applicants and just 29 percent of total applicants. The implication was clear: applying under Early Decision dramatically improves your chances of acceptance. At Brown University, my other favorite, applying early did not confer any advantage. While Brown was my No. 1 choice, Penn was a close second, and I desperately wanted to make sure I got into one of the two.I applied just before the Nov. 1 deadline, and six weeks later I got my acceptance package.I was thrilled and relieved. While my friends spent winter vacation finishing as many as 18 applications each, I relaxed. On a school trip to France over spring break, I drank wine while everyone else struggled with international calling cards to phone home and find out where they’d been accepted. People cried about getting rejected, or began the difficult and agonizing process of choosing between two or more schools. Strangely, none of this made me feel better about having applied early. It made me feel worse. When a lot of people from my class got into Brown, I wondered if I, too, could have.Penn sent a discombobulating array of material to incoming freshmen over the summer. As the pile of mail mounted, so did my concerns that I had made the wrong choice. I had been to Penn only one day, in October of my senior year. I realize now I did not know nearly enough about myself or the school. Picking classes was far more arcane(错综复杂的)than I had expected (or than it would have been at a smaller school). And when I got to the campus, I found that fraternities(男生联谊会)and sororities(女生联谊会)were a more noticeable and obnoxious presence than the 30 percent student membership had suggested to me.It wasn't long before I knew Penn was not right for me and I looked into transferring. For me, it was about more than just changing schools. I wanted to have the traditional application experience I'd missed out on during my first go-round. The only school on my list that allowed transfers during the second semester of freshman year was Wesleyan, so I waited out the whole year, and then applied to Yale, Brown and Wesleyan. I got into Wesleyan. The irony that I could have gotten in sooner, without getting rejected by the other schools, was not lost on me. But I know I made the right decision. I realized early decision is not for everyone. Better think before you apply. To high-school seniors who want to avoid making the same mistake I did, my advice is simple: don't apply under Early Decision unless you are absolutely sure that the school is your first choice. And, just as important, don’t let your parents or college-guidance counselors persuade you to apply under Early Decision. They may have their own agenda, or at least their own perception of who you are and what you want. As I discovered, no one can really know what you want better than yourself, and even you may need time to figure out what that is.1. The main reasons for the author to apply under Early Decision are ().2. It can be inferred from the text that the main advantage of Early Decision is that ()3. Even the two other represe ntatives of sacred law that are historically and geographically nearest to it, Jewish law and Roman Catholic Canon law, are perceptibly differe nt.Both Jewish law and Canon law are more uniform than Islamic law. Though historically there is a discernible break between Jewish law of the sovereign state of ancient Israel and the Diaspora (the dispersi on of Jewish people after the con quest of Israel), the spirit of the legal matter in later parts of the Old Testament is very close to that of the Talmud, one of the primary codifications of Jewish law in the Diaspora. Islam, on the other hand, represented a radical breakaway from the Arab paga nism that preceded it; Islamic law is the result of an exam in ati on, from uni form, comprising as it did the various components of the laws of pre-Islamic Arabia and numerous legal elements taken over from the non-Arab peoples of the conquered territories. All this was unified by being subjected to the same king of religious scrutiny, the impact of which varied greatly, being almost non existe nt in some fields, and in others orig in at ing no vel in stituti ons. This cen tral duality of legal subject matter and religious norm is additional to the variety of legal, ethical, and ritual rules that is typical of sacred law.In this relation to the secular state, Islamic law differed from both Jewish and Canon law. Jewish law was buttressed by the cohesi on of the commu nity, rei nforced by pressure from outside; its rules are the direct expression of this feeling of cohesion, tending toward the accommodation of dissent. Canon and Islamic law, on the contrary, were dominated by the dualism of religion and state, where the state was no t, i n con trast with Judaism, an alie n power but the political expressi on of the same religion. But the conflict between state and religion took different forms; in Christianity it appeared as the struggle for political power on the part of a tightly organized ecclesiastical hierarchy, and Canon law was one of its political weap on s. Islamic law, on the other hand, was never supported by an organized institution; consequently, there never developed an overt trial of stre ngth. There merely existed discorda nee betwee n applicati on of the sacred law and many of the regulations framed by Islamic states; this antagonism varied according to place and time.29. According to the passage, which of the following statements about sacred law is correct?A. The various systems of sacred law originated in a limited geographical area.B. Systems of sacred law usually rely on a wide variety of precede nts.C. Systems of sacred law function most effectively in communities with relatively small populati ons.D. Systems of sacred law gen erally con tai n prescripti ons gover ning diverse aspects of huma nactivity.30. It can inferred from the passage that the application of Islamic law in Islamic states hasA. systematically been opposed by groups who believe it is contrary to their interestsB. freque ntly bee n at odds with the legal activity of gover nment in stituti onsC. remained unaffected by the political forces operating alongside itD. ben efited from the fact that it n ever experie need a direct confron tati on with the state31. The passage suggests that canon law differs from Islamic law in that only canon lawA. contains prescripti ons that non-sacred systems might regard as properly legalB. played a role in the direct confron tati on betwee n in stituti ons competi ng for powerC. concerns itself with the duties of a person in regard to the community as a wholeD. developed in a political en viro nment that did not challe nge its fun dame ntal existe nce32. All of the following statements about the development of Islamic law are implied in thepassage EXPECT ________ .A. pre-Islamic legal principles were incorporated into Islamic law with widely differing degrees of cha ngeB. diverse legal eleme nts were joined together through the applicati on of a purely religio ns criteri onC. there was a fun dame ntally shared characteristic in all pre-Islamic legal matter take n over by Islamic lawD. although Islamic law emerged among the Arabs, Islamic law was in flue need by eth ni cally diverse eleme nts33. The passage is most likely a part of _______ .A. a book reviewB. a research reportC. a codeD. a briefi ngPassage 5By far the worst form of competiti on in schools is the disproporti on ate emphasis on exam in ati on s. It is a rare school that allows pupils to concen trate on those thi ngs they do well. The merits of competiti on by exam in ati on are somewhat questi on able, but competiti on in the certa in kno wledge of failure is positively harmful.34. (1) Management, for example, will be most concerned with the results of a research project, and thus the results section should be emphasized, probably by presenting it immediately after the problem section and before the procedures section. Other researchers would be most in terested in the procedures secti on, and this should be highlighted in writ ing up research projects for publicati on in professi onal jour nals or for prese ntati on at professi onal con fere nces. For non-tech ni cal readers and gover nment age ncies, the implicati ons of the results might be the most important consideration, and emphasis should be placed on the discussion of the report for this readership. Therefore, research data should be presented in a way that places proper emphasis on maior aspects of the project. (2)Passage 2Most con cepti ons of the process of motivati on beg in with the assumpti on that behavior is, at least in part, directed towards the attainment of goals or towards the satisfaction ofneeds or motives.
