Sample 1:Suppose you are a newspaper editor and have received the following letter from your reader. Write a reply to him and offer your advice.Dear editor,I’m 18 years old. Like many other university students, I’ve fallen in love with a girl who is in the same department as me. Just keep the love in heart?

Recently, a new greeting has appeared in many Chinese cities, namely “Have you lost weight?”In recent years, food-delivery services have been growing and Chinese people can easily get access to foods from all over the world. But people are paying more and more attention to their health. On food-delivery platforms, meal replacement and food labeled with “low calories” and “light food” are becoming popular. More people are becoming familiar with various terms, such as “zero sugar” and “low-calorie Fast Diet plan.”“I used to eat a lot of unhealthy food, which brought me much trouble,” Chen Xin, a programmer in Hangzhou said. “Following instructions from my nutritionist, I can feel that my body is in good condition again.”As the quality of life for most has greatly improved over the past decades, most people no longer need to worry about whether they have enough food, but rather whether they have a healthy diet. According to statistics from global market research firm Euromonitor International, the global meal replacement market reached $66.16 billion in 2017, of which the Chinese market contributed about $8.45 billion. The number is expected to double in 2022.Despite healthier diets, many people believe, to lose weight, exercise is also of vital importance. Besides training in the gym, many people choose to take fitness equipment home. Over the past two years, the online consumption of fitness equipment has increased greatly, particularly among women who attachgreat importance to body management. Many people even like to run marathons. In China’s major cities, holding marathons has become a fashion. 1,828 marathons were held nationwide in 2019, with 7.12 million participants.According to Wang Hufeng, a professor at the Renmin University of China, health is a major issue of concern for the Chinese people and health is becoming a huge industry. “Health is an important indicator of a state’s soft power, and the improvement of overall health conditions can have a positive impact on economic development,” Wang said.1.What can we know about the change of people’s greeting?A.People become friendlier to others.B.People care less about their meals.C.People show greater concern on health.D.People prefer a more direct manner.2.The statistics in paragraph 4 indicate that .A.China has greater buying power in foodB.food trading in China is expected to grow in 2022C.Chinese people are more willing to spend on foodD.Chinese people are changing their food choice greatly3.What can we infer from Professor Wang?A.Health plays an important role in society.B.Food safety should be stressed in the future.C.China’s economy depends on health industry.D.Government should develop health care industry.4.What is the text mainly about?A.A food market study.B.A trend in lifestyle.C.Enthusiasm about exercise.D.Benefits of healthy diet.BTechnology use seems to be the new wave of addiction hitting people of all ages. The next time you’re in a crowded public place, look at the people around you. It’s hard to find someone who isn’t glued to the tiny screen, fingers moving at lightning speeds, texting their friends, emailing co-workers or listening to music. It may seem ridiculous (荒谬的) that someone is that addicted to such a small object. I’ve seen people who seem to be at their wits’ end if their phone has been taken away, lost or left at home. Some people may ask, “What’s wrong with technology use? It’s a way for people to communicate.” While this is true, the overuse of technology isn’t always suitable in certain settings. Schools are becoming stricter about the use of mobile phones, iPods and other electronics in classrooms. Various workplaces havesigns hanging on their walls warning employees that “Mobile phone use is not permitted.”Electronics may be a way for people to communicate and stay in touch with each other, but the disadvantages may outweigh the benefits. People are losing the ability to hold face-to-face conversations with others. However, it’s hard to avoid electronics in this day and age because almost everything is turning into an electronic format. Books, originally meant for paper design, are now being transferred (转存) to electronic forms. Photo albums, and even yearbooks, can now be viewed via the Internet. With this growing trend (趋势), future generations certainly become even more addicted to technology. Is there a cure for electronic addiction? Simply turning electronics off for an hour or two a day may help to an extent, but it will not completely overcome electronic addiction. There only seems to be one cure left, and it may be the hardest: self-control.5.What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?A.Addiction to smart phones.B.The popularity of smart phones.C.Bad behaviors in public places.D.Changes brought by technology.6.What does the underlined phrase “at their wits’ end” in paragraph I probably mean?A.At a disadvantage.B.At a loss.C.Out of the way.D.Out of control.7.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A.The benefits of smart phones.B.The future trend of smart phones.C.Reasons for technology addiction.D.The negative impacts of smart phone addiction. 8.What advice does the author give in the text?A.Focus on other activities.B.Stay away from smart phones.C.Develop and improve self-control.D.Change the habits of smart phone use.CWhen no one else was able to save a drowning (溺水的) 34-year-old man, a boy weighing only 80 pounds quickly became his hero.11-year-old Adam was hanging out at the pool of his apartment building with his family when the man sank (下沉) to the bottom of the deep end, his arms spread out and his eyes wide from eight feet down in the water.Surprisingly, Adam was the only one at the pool who could swim at the time. Before his family had moved to St. Paul, Minnesota three years ago, his parents had never had the ability to take swimming lessons. Luckily, they believed that Adam should have a few swimming lessons. “Some survival skills are a must,” his father said. When trouble struck in the pool, however, Adam’s father had tried to help the man from a swim ring, but he couldn’t reach the man’s hand. Then, Adam jumped into the pool.Despite the man weighing almost 100 pounds heavier than the boy, Adam successfully managed to pull the man up to the surface and get him out of the pool. Though Adam’s uncle had never received CPR training, he started CPR on the man based on what he had seen in movies and television.A few minutes later, the man started to move his hands. Doctors then arrived and took the man to the hospital where he has since made a full recovery (恢复). The man stopped by the boy’s house later the very same week to thank him for saving his life.“It’s simply wonderful,” said Adam’s uncle. “If he had not been there, I don’t know. I’m sure it would not be a happy ending.” Adam’s father also says that he plans on taking swimming lessons with his son in the near future.9.Why was Adam sent to take swimming lessons?A.To build up his body.B.To save other people’s life.C.To keep a healthy weight.D.To keep himself safe in the water.10.What did his father do before Adam jumped into the pool?A.He sent for doctors.B.He called others for help.C.He asked Adam to save the man.D.He tried to save the man by himself.11.What happened to the man after he was pulled out of the pool?A.He thanked Adam.B.Doctors operated on him.C.He was sent to hospital at once.D.Adam’s uncle gave him first aid.12.Which word can best describe Adam?A.Brave.B.Polite.C.Clever.D.Proud.

基本情态(助)动词: can / could, may / might, must, shall, should / ought to, will / would (表意愿)2. / can ’t do sth.);一般肯定句中,两者只能作及物动词;作实义动词时两者均后接带to 的不定式;特殊地,dare 作实义动词时可省略to ;dare 的否定形式为daren ’t⑸ mustn ’t / needn ’t : 两者均为must 的否定形式,前者表示不许,后者表示不必⑹ needn ’t have done / didn ’t need to : 前者表示没必要做但已做完,后者表示没必要做且未做3. The child can ’t be telling the truth. It must be snowing . He might still be sleeping .⑵ shall : 用于征求允诺;用于法律法规的允诺、要求、命令(表示说话人的强烈意志、决心)⑶ should : 表示应该;抒发诸如惊奇、不满等情绪4. Uncertain ———————————————————————————→Certainmight may could can should ought to would will must⑵ 表推测时,can 不用于肯定句,may 不用于疑问句,即“may 不疑,can 不肯”,但could 没第07讲:情态动词及虚拟语气 1有这一限制⑶must用于肯定句;表示一定不,改用can’t而非mustn’t;must很少用于推测将来情况⑷can在疑问句中表示“可能,会”,couldn’t表示否定推测5.modal auxiliary + have done:can’t / couldn’t have done 过去不可能must have done 过去必然发生may / might have done 过去可能发生却未发生ought to / should have done 过去应该做却未做could have done 过去可以完成却未完成(委婉、遗憾) (needn’t见上)6.涉及情态动词的一些词组:may well / might (may) as well = had better / would like (love / care) to do / should like (love) to do / would rather … than / could you please do sth.? / can’t help but do / can’t be too / be to have done = should have done7.if引导的非真实条件状语从句: 注意①去掉if倒装;②主从句时态可不一致if从句主句一般时v.ed / were would / should / might / could + v.过去时had v.ed would have v.ed将来时v.ed / were to v. / should + v. would + v.8.wish / as if表示与真实相反9. 特别注意insist(坚持说、坚持认为)及suggest(表明、暗示)❖考前巩固I. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake.Tea remained scarce(稀少的) and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it directly from China early in the 17th century.During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.Tea had been drunk without milk in it at first, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never drink it without milk again. She was such a great lady that her friends thought they must copy everything she did.Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.At first tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess(公爵夫人) found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o'clock stopped her getting“a sinking feeling”as she called it.She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so,teatime was born.1.What can we learn about the Britons from the text?A.They got expensive tea from India.B.They bought tea out of curiosity at first.C.They had tea until the early 17th century.D.They were the first to drink tea in Europe. 2.When did tea become a popular drink in Britain?A.In the 17th century.B.In the early 18th century.C.In the late 18th century.D.In the 19th century.3.The underlined words“this habit”in Paragraph 3 refer to drinking tea________.A.after dinner B.in the afternoonC.with milk in it D.without milk in it4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?A.The history of tea.B.The birth of teatime.C.The ways of making tea.D.The habit of drinking tea.BAustralia was always a country I wanted to visit, so I saved up some money and booked a flight to go traveling up the east coast of Australia at the end of my work in London. The flight made me realize exactly how far away Australia is from home. I spent 10 hours traveling on a plane from London to Hong Kong, then a further 8 hours to Sydney, my first stop in Australia. The flight went quite quickly though, since there were lots of films to watch to keep me amused. It was strange when I arrived because everything was upside down over there; it was the start of winter (in May)! It also took me a while to get used to the time difference as I was always one day ahead of all my friends and family back home. The country is truly beautiful, full of amazing views and wildlife you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the world. One of my experiences of my trip was seeing koalas closely in Brisbane—there were koalas everywhere sleeping in the trees and I even got the chance to hold one. There was also big grassland full of kangaroos that we were allowed to feed. They were really smart and very friendly. The highlight of my trip was snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, as the water was amazingly clear with a beautiful shade of blue. I also got the chance to see some special creatures underwater, such as sea turtles and even a shark. Australia is an amazing country and worth visiting one day if you ever get the chance.5.What did the author think of the journey on the plane?A.Time-wasting.B.Disappointing.C.Dangerous.D.Pleasant.6.How did the author feel when he reached Sydney?A.Tired.B.Excited.C.Unfamiliar.D.Upset.7.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A.Unique wild animals living in Australia.B.Beautiful natural landscape in Brisbane. C.Wonderful experiences with wild animals.D.Exciting sports during the trip in Australia. 8.What does the underlined word “snorkeling” in Paragraph 4 mean?A.Fishing on the sea.B.Swimming underwater.C.Watching animal shows.D.Feeding turtles and sharks.CImagine this: You’re at a movie theater food stand loading up on snacks. You have a choice of a small, medium or large soda. The small is $3.50 and the large is $5.50. It’s a tough decision: The small size may not last you through the whole movie, but $5.50 for some sugary drink seems ridiculous. But there’s a thirdoption, a medium soda for $5.25. The medium might be just right for you, but the large only cost a quarter more. If you’re like the majority of people, you end up buying the large. If you’re wondering who would purchase the medium soda, the answer is almost no one. Actually, there’s a good chance that the marketing department purposely priced the medium soda as a decoy(诱饵), making you more likely to buy the soda rather than the small.I have written about this unique human nature previously with my friend Dan Ariely, who, after noticing pricing for subscription(订阅) to The Economist, studied this phenomenon extensively. The digital subscription was $59, the print subscription was $125, and the print plus digital subscription was also $125. No one in their right mind would buy the print subscription when you could get digital as well for the same price, so why was it even an option? Ariely ran an experiment and found that when only the two“real”choices were offered, more people chose the less-expensive digital subscription. However, the bad option increased people’s likelihood of selecting the expensive print plus digital option.Brain scientists call this effect“asymmetric dominance” and it means that people are attracted to the option that is closest to an obviously inferior(较差的) option. Marketing professors call it the decoy effect, which is certainly easier to remember. It works because of the way our brain assign value when making choices. Value is rarely absolute; rather, we decide an object’s value relative to other choices. If more options are introduced, the value equation(方程) changes.9.What’s the function of the example in paragraph 1?A.To offer background information.B.To explain an economical phenomenon.C.To arouse the readers’ interest in the topic.D.To illustrate a rule when buying drinks.10.What do we learn from Dan Ariely’s experiment?A.The Economist’s print edition turns out to sell the best.B.More readers choose the digital over the print edition.C.Lower-priced goods attract more customers.D.The Economist’s promotional strategy works.11.From which website would you most probably find this text?12.How do we assess the value of a product, according to the passage?A.by considering its usefulness.B.Comparing it with other choices.C.By examining its value equation.D.By taking its low quality into account. How to Improve Speed Reading SkillsSpeed reading is one of many skills that can improve your reading comprehension and shorten your study time. ____1____Look at groups of words, not single words.____2____, then this will slow your reading speed down. However, if you can get into the habit of reading groups or chunks (大量) of words at onetime, then you can read much faster. Start by trying to look at a group of three or four words at once, then work up to looking at an entire line of works. Focus on words that give the sentence meaning, such as the nouns and verbs and pay less attention to the filler words, such as a, the, and, etc.____3____Scanning is a highly effective way of extracting answers from a text without really reading it. If you know exactly what you are looking for—a name, a date, a statistic, or a specific word—you can find it quickly by skipping over large chunks of the text. To scan, first visualize the word, number, or phrase you would like to find. ____4____The information you are looking for should pop out at you.Race the clock. You can train yourself to read faster by timing yourself as you go. Start by getting your base time. Set a timer (定时器) for fifteen minutes, and speed read as you normally do. ____5____, check to see how far you have got. Do not count the words, just the pages or paragraphs. Record your figures: for instance, you might write “15 min/6.5 pages.”。

2006An expert suggested that certain criminals should be sent to prison in their own home. When the scheme was first put forward publicly, many people opposed it or hand serious reservations about it. One very experienced social worker opposed the scheme in a television interview. When asked to explain the basis for his opposition, he thought for a moment and finally confessed, ‘Well, I guess, because it’s new. That’s my only reason.’Advocates of the scheme pointed out that courts frequently sentenced first offenders to community service of some kind rather than send them to prison. The stigma of having a criminal record was an adequate deterrent, and nothing positive was achieved by sending some types of convicted people to prison. Some cri tics rushed to take extreme cases. ‘If a murderer is allowed free in the community like this, what is to prevent him from killing somebody else?’ This argument ignored the fact that nobody proposed to allow convicted murderers to use the bracelet system. One criticism put forward was that an offender could take off his bracelet and leave it at home or give it to a friend to wear while he himself wet off to commit another crime. The reply to this was that the bracelet would be made so that the computer would immediately detect any attempts to take it off or tamper with it.A more serious objection to the scheme was that the harsh life of prison was intended to be part of the deterrent to crime. A prisoner who was allowed to live at home would suffer no particular discomfort and thus not be deterred from repeating his crime. No immediate action was taken on the proposal. It was far too revolutionary and needed to be examined very carefully. However, the idea was not rejected. Several governments appointed experts to investigate the scheme and make recommendations for or against it.49.People’s opinions are divided on the suggestion that .A.some criminals should serve their terms at homeB.social workers can express themselves on TVC. first offenders should be sentenced to community serviceD.old offenders should be imprisoned50.A social worker opposed the proposal for the reason that .A.it is unique B.it is creative C.it is novel D.it is out-of-date51.We can learn from the passage that the “bracelet” is supposed to .A. keep the track of the offendersB.detect the offender’s attempt of murderC.be worn for decorationD.be worn by offenders’ friends occasionally52.The supporters of the scheme will probably agree that ______.A.the hard life of prison may prevent some people from repeating a crimeB.the life at home is too comfortable for the prisonersC.high-technology should be deterrent to crimeD.imprisonment will not achieve much to some offenders53.The prospect of the advice is that _______.A.it will be put into practice immediatelyB.it will be declined by the governmentC.it will be further carefully looked intoD.it will be confirmed by appointed expertsDr Adams was tired and suffering from jet lag. His temper was not improved when he was told, on arriving more than three hours late at New Delhi, that his plane to Colombo had already gone and that there would not be another until the next day. The airline staff were very sympathetic and assured him that they had already booked him into the best hotel in the city, to which the airline bus would take him straight away. In the meantime. They hoped that Dr Adams would take the opportunity of seeing something of their historic city. The only things Dr Adams felt he needed at that point were a bath, a change of clothes, a good breakfast and then a long sleep. The hotel was luxurious and very cool and comfortable. After he had eaten he pulled down the blinds to shut out5 the glaring Indian sun and then slept for most of the day. About 6.30 p.m. he dr4essed and went down to the hotel bar, where he got into conversation with another delegate to the Conference who came from Zambia and who would be traveling with him on the Colombo plane the next morning. They decided to dine together and explore some of the sights and sounds of India at night. The journey to Colombo was completed without mishap and Dr Adams and his companion were met at the airport by the Conference Secretary, Mr. Mahaveli, who had been informed of their impending arrival by the airline. Mr. Mahaveli took them to their hotel, where many other delegates were already installed, and made sure that they had the program for the opening session. On the morning of the second day of the Conference, Dr Adams read his paper, which was received with much interest. He was asked many questions by delegates in whose countries many of the problems he had discussed were commonly found. During the five days of the Conference he had opportunities to talk to agriculture experts from Jamaica, Kenya, Tanzania, India, Gambia, Australia and Nigeria and he also met some old friends who had previously been students at the Commonwealth School. He heard from many of them how they were putting all that they had learned to good use and of the problems they were trying to overcome in their own countries. On his flight home Dr Adams could not help reflecting that the Conference had proved how valuable the sharing of information and experiences could be, as an example of true cooperation between the develope3d and the developing world.54.Which of the following statements of is NOT true of Dr. Adams? ________.A.He was angry about his late arrival at New Delhi.B.He was due to arrive in New Delhi late at night.C.After dinner, he went out into the streets of New Delhi.D.He found long journeys exhausting and tiresome.55.All the delegates to the conference were _______.A.students of the Commonwealth School B.from the developing countries C.from African countries D.agricultural specialists56.The phrase “without mishap” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “_______”. She ran across the picturesque campus to the shores of Cayuga Lake, where she jumped into the water. So did many of her fellow seniors. But dozens of students decided to stay away, especially the relatively few newly arrived male students.Wells College, which since 1868 had educated only women, began accepting men this year in hopes of bolstering its dwindling enrollment. For many students and alumnae, it was a crushing decision. After the college announced last October that it would go coeducational, about half of the students protested and two filed a lawsuit, which they later dropped. The students ---- 33 men and 383 women ---- came to campus late last month. Both sexes are now trying to navigate the new social landscape. Mr. Phillips said “You can’t do guy stuff. Every ti me you want to sit and watch sports or a game, it turns into a movie.” The women were “somewhat nasty” I could see the dirty looks in their eyes.” He said, “But I was not going to let that stop me from comings.”Wells was a place where women did not have to fuss over their appearance or fight to be taken seriously by their professor. They could enjoy the camaraderie of their campus sisters and their playful traditions. Besides jumping into the lake, the women dance around the maypole each May and kiss the feet of the statue of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, before exams.Ms. Alexander said,”People told us we wouldn’t notice a difference, but from the moment men arrived on campus you could notice a difference. Women are waking up early to put on makeup, and that’s odd, “she said.Henry Wells, a founder of Wells Fargo and a friend of Cornell’s benefactor, Ezra Cornell established this college, when women were not considered capable of higher learning. “Give her the opportunity,” he wrote. The news that the college would go coed created ripples far beyond campus. One alumna wrote a letter to the college’s president, Lisa Marsh Ryerson, saying the founder would haunt her. “I believe Henry Wells would have haunted me if I let Wells College close,” said Ms. M arsh Ryerson, a Wells alumna herself. The great-great-great-great granddaughter of Henry Wells, Stephanie Redmond, 18, of Washington State, said that earlier this year a Wells student had tracked her down and asked her to support the protest. But Ms. Redmond said the move to admit men had encouraged her to enroll at Wells this year as a freshman. She plans on a career in engineering, a male-dominated field, and said attending an all-women’s college might have put her at a disadvantage.49. The primary reason for the Wells College to accept men is that _______.A. its enrollment rare is in declineB. the campus is lack of vigor and vitalityC. it will face the destiny of being closed downD. all-women’s college might put a woman at a disadvantage50. A typical behavior for seniors to do is that ______.A. they jog along the picturesque campusB. they switch sports programs to a movieC. they celebrate their fourth year by jumping into a lakeD. they swim in Cayuga Lake accompanied by friends51. The change after turning into a coed college is that ______.A. dirty looks in women’s eyes have disappearedB. women get up early to make upC. women are waking up early to studyD. women dance with men around the maypole52. The attitude of the author is that ______.A. she hates a tradition of all-women schoolsB. she calls on women in support of the protestC. she dislikes the change and hopes to file a lawsuitD. she objectively describes the new and uneasy coeducation53. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. The enrollment of male students caused controversyB. The grandchildren of the college founder benefited most.C. The current president of the college was also its graduate.D. The founder hoped to give women opportunities of higher education. But what is teacher quality? How can one measure it reliably? An analysis is issued on a sample of data from a Texas school district. Experts argue convincingly that teacher effectiveness should be measured by students’ gains on standardized tests: Mr. Smith is presumably a better teacher than Ms. Brown if his students consistently improve their test scores more than hers do.Though this approach is appealing, there are tricky issues. For example, what if Ms. Brown teaches in a school where students score so high there is little room for improvement? The authors try to correct for this problem, as well as other sorts of measurement issues, to generate a measurement of teacher effectiveness. The paper is primarily concerned with how this measure is related to other observable characteristics. The first finding is that there is a large variation in teacher effectiveness: some teachers consistently have a larger impact on their students’ achievement than others.Second, easily observable charact eristics like having a master’s degree or a passing score on the teacher certification exam are not correlated with teacher effectiveness. Then what does matter? The most important single influence is experience: first-year teachers are much less effective than others. The second year is significantly better, and by the fourth year, most teachers hit their stride. It is not entirely clear whether this experience effect is learning by doing (the more you teach, the more effective you become) or survival of the fittest (those who are not good at teaching tend to drop out early.)From my reading of the paper, both effects appear important and there is no simple answer. The data do suggest, however, that teacher effectiveness is pretty clear by the end of the second year, so the information to make an informed decision is available at that time. The authors also investigate the contentious issue of racial matching of students and teachers. Here they find strong evidence that minority teachers tend to be more effective with minority students. Again, it is unclear whether this is because of a role model effect (students respond better to a teacher of their own race) or an empathy effect (teachers empathize better with students of their own race) or something else entirely. The authors also look at teacher mobility. There is some evidence that teachers who quit teaching or switch schools tend to be below average in effectiveness. This is consistent with the survival-of-the-fittest model.54. The schoolmaster could decide wisely whether to further employ the teacher by the end of the ______.A. the first yearB. the second yearC. the third yearD. the fourth year55. The phrase “hit their stride” most probably means “______”.A. reach their normal levelB. become confidentC. walk with long stepsD. get bored56. The author of this passage holds the view that ______.A. teachers will perform better with time passingB. ineffective teachers should leave earlier rather than laterC. teacher’s effective ness is apparent after a couple of yearsD. a master’s degree will improve teacher’s effectiveness57. Why do black teachers tend to be more effective with black students?A. Students fell secure, so they respond better.B. Teachers sympathize with students of their own race.C. There are entirely some other identified reasons.D. The reasons are far from clear and definite.58. Which of the following may serve as the best title?A. Tenure, Turnover and the Quality of TeachingB. Impact of Teacher Quality on Student LearningC. Different Sorts of Measurement IssuesD. Survival-of-the-fittest Model vs. Learning-by-doing Model复旦 2008If all goes according to plan, the entire North American continent will become a free trade zone devoid of tariffs, quotas, and other trade barriers some time during the 1990s. This plan is the result of recent agreements and discussions involving the United States and Canada on the one hand and the United States and Mexico on the other.Canada. Canada and the United States are already each other's largest trading partners. In 1956, for example, the U.S. accounted for 71 percent of Canadian merchandise trade(exports plus imports); Canada accounted for 19 percent of U.S. trade. In 1988, a historic document was signed, the Canada-United States Free-Trade Agreement. In many respects, this event seems a natural consequence of long-standing friendship, common economic interests, and geographic proximity. Nevertheless, it took more than a century to reach agreement. In the mid 1800s, after Great Britain repealed the Corn Laws, Canada proposed bilateral free trade with the United States, and a limited treaty covering natural products only was signed. However, it was abrogated during the Civil War by the United States because of close Canadian-British ties and British support for the Confederacy. After more than a century of fluctuating sentiments on the issue, the 1988 agreement finally eliminates all bilateral tariffs (in stages to be completed by 1998) and all quantitative trade restrictions. The agreement, it was thought, would particularly boost trade in agricultural products (fruits, vegetables, poultry), mining products (coal and oil), and services (banking, computer, insurance, professional and telecommunications services, plus retail andwholesale wade). Both countries expected net gains between $ 1 and 3 billion per year.Mexico.Mexico is the third largest U.S. trading partner, accounting for 5 percent of U.S. exports plus imports (Canada and Japan account for 19 percent each); the U.S. accounts for two-thirds of Mexico's foreign trade. In 1987, the United States-Mexico Framework Understanding put in place the first procedures ever for consultations regarding trade and investment relations between these two countries. The mechanism was set up to resolve disputes and to negotiate the removal of trade barriers as supplement to GATT. In early 1991, genuine free trade discussions were set in motion and soon joined by Canada. The goal was the creation of a hemispheric free trade zone reaching from the Yukon to the Yucatan and encompassing a market of 360 million people.Analysts foresaw major gains associated with increased specialization and trade. They also predicted major adjustment costs in the United States where low-skill jobs would be lost to thousands of low-wage assembly plants now clustered along the U.S.- Mexican border, while high-skill jobs ranging from architecture to engineering and telecommunications would get a noticeable export boost. Another likely consequence is that the future rise in real wages south of the border would slow the flow of illegal aliens into the United States.49. The main idea of this passage is that ( )A. the new North American free trade zone will likely have many benefits for the countries involvedB. the United States has made great contributions to the establishment of free trade zonesC. a North American free trade zone will give the United States significant advantages in its trade with JapanD. free trade zones will prevent illegal immigrants from entering the United States50. The details given in the underlined sentences in Paragraph 2 ( )A. emphasize the important role the United States played in the world tradeB. provide evidence supporting a tentative conclusionC. illustrate how a free trade zone has worked in the pastD. add believability to the statement that Canada and the United States are important trading partners.51. The author's likely purpose in this passage is to ( )A. convinceB. evaluateC. argue for somethingD. criticize52. As used in line 5 Paragraph 3, the word abrogated means ( ) .A. abolishedB. abridgedC. ignited suddenlyD. ended formallyGeneral Electric has found robots far more productive in some work than human work. In one case, a robot saved enough to pay for itself in ten months. At Ford Motor Company, about fifty small robots are deftly fitting light bulbs into dashboards and speakers into car radios. The next phase of the computer revolution may well turn out to be the robotrevolution. Robots have been fixtures in comedy and science fiction for a long time, but the first industrial robot wasn't used in the United States until 1961. Industrial robots scarcely resemble the stereotyped humanoid with flashing eyes and a control-panel chest. They're basically just combinations of a computer with very deft and efficient producing machines. What's really new, of course, is the extent to which these electronic wonders are transforming the way people work and the composition of the work force, especially in Japan. There are about 36.000 robots working in Japan and approximately 6,500 in the United States. In early 1982, Raymond Donovan, U.S. Secretary of Labor, predicted that by 1990 half the workers in U.S. factories would be specialists trained to service and repair robots. It's easy to see why these "steel-collar workers" can be preferable to their human counterparts. They cause fewer personnel problems: they're never absent, and they never ask for more holidays, take vacations, or file grievances. They also give more consistent attention to quality control, are more efficient and effective performers, and are definitely cheaper to keep. Robots, which cost about $30,000 to $150,000 each, usually work two shifts a day. The displaced workers would draw salaries and benefits of about $790,000 a year. However, robots still cannot replace all facets of the human worker. The automated factory is feasible, but when it comes to reason and informed decisions, robots are still in the same league with machines, at least for now.53. The details given in the underlined sentences in Paragraph 2 ( )A. illustrate the technical superiority of Japanese technology over American technologyB. show the growth in acceptance of robot workers worldwideC. demonstrate the need to catch up with Japanese technologyD. warn against the possibility that robot workers will displace human workers54. In line 3 Paragraph 1, the word deftly means ( ) .A. clumsilyB. swiftlyC. expensivelyD. skillfully55. The writer of this passage probably ( )A. sees a role for both robot and human factory workersB. wants to see more robots employed in factoriesC. feels threatened by robotsD. believes robots make manufacturing much easier。

The year 2024 marks a significant milestone in the educational landscape as the highly anticipated Grade 8 Midterm Exam approaches. For students and educators alike, this examination holds immense importance, serving as a crucial checkpoint in their academic journey. Among the various components of the exam, the English essay section has consistently been a focal point, challenging students to showcase their linguistic prowess and analytical skills. In the context of the Shanghai Edition of the exam, the essay prompt has garnered considerable attention and speculation. Educators and students alike have been meticulously analyzing the trends and patterns of previous exams, seeking to uncover the most likely topic that will be featured in the 2024 Midterm. Based on the comprehensive analysis of past exam papers, the consensus among experts suggests that the most favored essay topic for the 2024 Grade 8 Midterm Exam (Shanghai Edition) will be "The Importance of Environmental Protection in the 21st Century".The rationale behind this prediction lies in the growing globalemphasis on environmental sustainability and the urgent need to address the pressing environmental challenges faced by our planet. In recent years, the Chinese government has made significant strides in its commitment to environmental protection, with a range of policies and initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy, and preserving natural habitats. This heightened focus on environmental stewardship has also permeated the education system, with a greater emphasis on environmental education and the integration of environmental themes across various academic disciplines.Furthermore, the 2024 Midterm Exam is expected to align with the broader educational objectives set forth by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. These objectives prioritize the development of critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of global issues, all of which are closely tied to the topic of environmental protection. By tasking students with crafting a well-structured and thoughtful essay on this subject, the exam aims to assess their ability to analyze the multifaceted aspects of environmental preservation, propose viable solutions, and demonstrate their mastery of English language skills. To excel in this anticipated essay prompt, students will need to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the environmental challenges facing our world. This includes, but is not limited to, theimpact of climate change, the depletion of natural resources, the loss of biodiversity, and the growing issue of plastic pollution. Additionally, students will be expected to explore the various strategies and initiatives undertaken by governments, organizations, and individuals to address these environmental concerns, and to critically evaluate their effectiveness. One of the key elements that examiners will be looking for in the essays is the students' ability to propose innovative and practical solutions to environmental problems. This may involve discussing the role of renewable energy sources, sustainable urban planning, circular economies, or educational campaigns aimed at fostering environmental awareness among the general public. By showcasing their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, students will be able to make a strong impression on the exam graders.Furthermore, the essay prompt is likely to encourage students to consider the global implications of environmental protection and the importance of international cooperation in addressing these challenges. Students may be asked to examine case studies of successful environmental initiatives implemented in other countries, and to explore how these strategies can be adapted and applied within the Chinese context. By demonstrating a nuanced understanding of the global nature of environmental issues, students will be able to strengthen the depth and relevance of theirarguments. In addition to the substantive content of the essay, examiners will also place a significant emphasis on the quality of the students' English language skills. This includes their ability to organize their thoughts coherently, construct well-developed paragraphs, employ a diverse vocabulary, and maintain grammatical accuracy throughout the essay. Students who can seamlessly integrate their environmental knowledge with polished English writing will be able to maximize their scores and stand out among their peers. To prepare for this anticipated essay prompt, students are encouraged to engage in a comprehensive review of environmental topics, familiarize themselves with relevant case studies and data, and practice their essay-writing skills. This may involve conducting extensive research, participating in group discussions, and seeking feedback from teachers and peers to refine their writing abilities.By embracing the challenge of the 2024 Grade 8 Midterm Exam (Shanghai Edition) and dedicating themselves to the mastery of environmental protection as an essay topic, students will not only showcase their academic prowess but also contribute to the broader societal effort to safeguard our planet for generations to come. As the exam approaches, the anticipation and excitement amongstudents and educators alike will continue to grow, setting the stage for a truly remarkable educational experience.。

1.______ birds use their feathers for flight, some of their feathers are for other purposes.A. OnceB. IfC. AlthoughD. Because【答案】C【解析】试题解析:A. Once 一旦B. If 如果C. Although 尽管D. Because 因为。
2. Every morning he spends________ hour doing exercise, then he goes to________ work.A. a ;aB. an; /C. a; /D. an; the2. B【
3. "You __ have a wrong number," she said. "There's no one of that name here. "A. needB. canC. mustD. would3. C【
”从“There's no one of that name here.”
A.need需要;B.can可能;C.must一定;D.would会。
