L e s s o n2 M a r r a k e c h第二课马拉喀什随笔乔治·奥威尔1.

How does the author put forward his idea?
By a contrast
between the soldiers and the storks and a comparison between the soldiers and cattle
the soldiers and the storks • The passive plodding, earthbound blacks(southward) are contrasted with the glittering white birds (their white masters; northward) so great, pure and lofty who sail above them in the sky. While the former are weighed down by heavy packs, are sweating and uncomfortably hot, the latter are free to soar unfettered in the cool sky above.
the soldiers and cattle The soldiers: passive plodding, earthbound, weighed down by heavy packs, sweating, uncomfortably hot, like cattle who do not asking questions and follow their masters blindly

Why
The name Marrakech originates from the Amazigh (Berber) words mur (n) akush, which means "Land of God." It is the fourth largest city in the country, Morocco. There are two distinct parts: the Medina, the historical city, and the new European modern district called Gueliz or Ville Nouvelle.

His Life
– He is mush praised in the west partly because of his anti-communist point of view.
– He was born in India, father, a so called empirebuilder --serving the British government abroad.
e. People: most Muslims; Most (70%) Moroccans are farmers, using camels, donkeys and mules to pull plows, trying to try to grow their own food. In the South a few tribesmen still wander from place to place in the desert.
---Renowned for leather goods --- the old city is like a labyrinth (迷宫 ) full of
crooked, deadened streets.
Marrakech
Marrakech is not only a fantastic city, it is also a symbol of the Morocco that once was, and which still survives here. The streets of the old and pink city have been too narrow to allow the introduction of cars, and tourists searching for the "real" Morocco have turned the medieval structures of Marrakech into good business.

through the air as a mass. 一团 e.g. a cloud of locusts/ insects
• The cars set off in a cloud of dust.
The author’s choice of a dramatic scene and the simple words implies much more than what appears on the surface. We can see poverty of the place and unsanitary condition of the city
The use of words like “hack, dump, fling, no gravestone, no name, no identifying mark, …” indicates the unceremonious way in which a funeral is carried out. In a poor country like Morocco, life is cheap.
The fact shows the human life has no value at all.
Paragraph 2
How do you think of the use of some words in Para. 2?
The use of words like “the flies”, “a piece of rag”, “ rough wooden bier”, … repeats forcefully the theme of Para. 1.

Orwell describes objectively the suffering and misery in Marrakech, yet he manages to show that he is outraged at the spectacle of misery. He succeeds in imparting the feeling to the readers, first, through the clever choice of the scenes he describes; second, through the appropriate use of words; third, through the tone in which he describes these scenes; and finally, by contrasting the indignation at the cruel handing of the donkey with the unconcern to the fate of the human beings.
Islam is the state religion and Arabic is the official language. But French and Spanish are also spoken.
Marrakech: Marrakech is in west central Morocco, at the Northern foot of the high Atlas,130 miles south of Casablanca, the chief seaport. The city renowned for leather goods, is one of the principal commercial centers of Morocco.
