University or Not 上大学值得吗

Helen: Hello, I’m Helen.
Li: 今天我们的话题有关高等教学。

上大学到底是值得还是不值得？
Helen: Given the current economic climate, is it still worthwhile to go to university or not?
Li: 这个问题现在困扰着很多英国的高中毕业生。

30年前，仅仅百分之四的人口是大学毕业，可是现在有百分之四十。

Helen: Does this mean a degree is no longer as valuable as it used to be? Li: Not as valuable as it used to be 是不是没有以前那么值钱了？另外，上大学的费用可是一年比一年高。

Helen: That’s right. Higher education used to be free, but not any more.
It’s been estimated that when a graduate finishes his degree, he
will be over £20,000 in debt.
Li: 现在一个大学生毕业时会负债 in debt. 要偿还超过两万英镑的贷款 loans.
Helen: Let’s hear from Keith Dougdale, Director of Global Recruitment for KPMG.

We’ve got a recession, times are tough and it’s difficult for graduates. But long-term, the prospects are actually great and they’re going to get better, because of the demographic time bomb, which means we need more and more people with more and more skills to enter the work force as graduates.
Li: 刚才我们听到的是 Keith Dougdale, 他有着几十年的招聘经验。

Helen: W ith recession, there are fewer jobs available and it’s tough for new graduates. But Keith tells us that long-term, the prospects are
still very good.
Li: Prospects 前景，不过从长远来说 long-term, 大学毕业生的就业前景还是不错的。

Keith 提到了 demographic time bomb, demographic 就是人口
统计的， time bomb 定时炸弹。

Helen: He doesn’t really mean there’s going to be bomb explosion; it’s a metaphor to indicate that there’ll be a big increase in population.
Li: 原来 Keith 的意思是人口会大幅度增长，到时候需要更多的大学生
graduates 来满足各行各业的需求。

Helen: But young people must realise that a degree qualification alone can’t guarantee that you’ll get a job.
Li: 是的，单有文凭是不够的。

人事经理 Jonathan Evans 告诉我们，公司雇主对大学生的工作经验也非常重视。

They’re looking for graduates who are employable, just having a degree doesn’t make someone employable. They’re looking for people who have supportive evidence of how they can apply their knowledge into the workplace. So getting descent work experience at university, and actually having an understanding of what that work experience will give them.
Helen: So work experience really counts.
Li: Jonathan 说公司找的是 graduates who are employable, 能够为公司带来效益的毕业生。

仅仅有一张毕业证书不能代表这个人能够成为一名好雇员。

Helen: Employers are looking for people who have supportive evidence of how they can apply their knowledge into the workplace.
Li: Evidence 证据，公司找的是可以证明自己有能力的人，可以把知识运用到工作上。

Helen: That’s why work experience during holidays is very important. It gives you the competitive advantage over someone who hasn’t got
the relevant work experience.
Li: 平时积累实用的工作经验，也就是 decent work experience, 这是非常重要的。

Helen: We have another expert advice from Wendy Piatt. She’s the
Director General at the Russell Group of Universities.
Li: Wendy 是一个联合科研大学的执行董事，她建议高中毕业生在选择大学时需要好好考虑学科和去哪所大学。

Helen: Choosing whether to go to university or not is not an easy decision.
But if you do decide to go, then there are other factors to consider
too.

So I would say please think very carefully about this decision, and think very carefully about the course that you’re going to take, and the institution that you’ll attend, because the benefits do vary, according to course and institution and it’s important to say that as well.
Li: W endy 认为选科很重要，到哪所大学去上课也很重要。

Helen: The benefits do vary according to the course and institution. So doing your research beforehand really helps.
Li: 看来专家们大多都认为上大学对一个人的将来还是有帮助的。

Helen: But going to university is something that young people must think through carefully, because it’s a huge emotional and financial
commitment.
