Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the sc-Teen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harnfful to the young. (76) Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the “television generations” are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. (77) Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people__________. A. knew the effects of war B. went in for politics C. liked to save the wounded in wars D. were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can__________. A. discus politics at an information center B. show more interest in politics C. make theft own decisions on political affairs D. express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements__________. A. are not reliable on the whole B. are useless to people C. are a good guide to adults D. are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A. People have become used to crimes now. B. With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C. People now like to read books with pictures. D. The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that__________. A. children should keep away from TV B. TV programs should be improved C. children's books should have pictures D. TV has a deep influence on the young Passage 2 Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage: Nonverbal (⾮语⾔的) communication has to do with gestures, movements and closeness of two people when they are talking. (78) The scientists say that those gestures, movements and so on have meaning which words do not carry. For example, the body distance between two speakers can be important. North Americans often complain that South Americans are unfriendly because they tend to stand close to the North American when speaking, while the South American often considers the NorthAmerican to be “cold”“or ”distant“”because he keeps a greater distance between himself and the person he is speaking to. The “eye contact” provides another example of what we are calling nonverbal communication. Scientists have observed that there is more eye contact between people who like each other than there is between people who don't like each other. (79) The length of time that the person whom you are speaking to looks at your eyes indicates the amount of interest he has in the things you are talking about. On the other hand, too long a gaze can make people uncomfortable. The eyes apparently play a great part in nonverbal communication. Genuine warmth or interest, shyness or confidence can often be seen in the eyes. We do not always consider a smile to be a sign of friendliness. Someone who is always smiling, and with little apparent reasons, often makes us uneasy. 6. According to the passage, nonverbal communication__________. A. is a method often used by people who cannot speak B. can tell something that words cannot C. can be used to talk with people who cannot bear D. is less used than words 7. The South American__________. A. tends to keep a distance between himself and the person he is speaking to B. usually stands close to the person he is talking to C. is often unfriendly when spoken to D. is often cold and distant when speaking 8. Which of the following is NOT true? A. Less eye contact suggests distance in relation. B. The longer one looks at you, the more interest he has in you. C. There is more eye contact between people who like each other. D. Shorter eye contact shows more interest in what one is talking about 9. Too long a gaze__________. A. may upset people being looked at B. shows one's great confidence C. indicates one's interest in the talk D. tells you how friendly one is 10. Constant smiling without apparent reason__________. A. is a sign of one's friendliness B. is a sign of one's unfriendliness C. makes people feel happy D. makes people feel uncomfortable Passage 3 Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage: In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly ail the teachers are women, mostly married. (76) The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago - so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction. The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness. 11. According to the passage, the U.S. elementary education is supposed to make children__________.A. sensible and sensitiveB. competitive and interestedC. curious and friendlyD. happy and co-operative 12. Some Americans complain about elementary schools because they think__________. A. children are reluctant to help each other B. schools lay too much emphasis on co-operation C. children should grow up with competitive ideas D. schools give little actual instruction to children 13. The author's attitude towards American education can be best described as__________.A. favorableB. negativeC. tolerantD. unfriendly 14. The American educational system emphasizes__________.A. material wealthB. competitionC. co-operationD. personal benefit 15. The word “sociable” most probably means__________. A. fond of talking freely B. friendly with other people C. concerned about social welfare D. happy at school Part II Vocabulary and Structure (30%) Directions: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. Part of the problem is that many homeless adults are addicted to alcohol or drugs. And a significant number of the homeless have serious mental disorders. Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (40 points)Text 1In spite of “endless talk of difference,” American society is an amazing machine for homogenizing people. There is “the democratizing uniformity of dress and discourse, and the casualness and absence of deference” characteristic of popular culture. People are absorbed into “a culture of consumption”launched by the 19th-century department stores that offered “vast arrays of goods in an elegant atmosphere. Instead of intimate shops catering to a knowledgeable elite,” these were stores “anyone could enter, regardless of class or background. This turned shopping into a public and democratic act.” The mass media, advertising and sports are other forces for homogenization.Immigrants are quickly fitting into this common culture, which may not be altogether elevating but is hardly poisonous. Writing for the National Immigration Forum, Gregory Rodriguez reports that today’s immigration is neither at unprecedented levels nor resistant to assimilation. In 1998 immigrants were 9.8 percent of the population; in 1900, 13.6 percent. In the 10 years prior to 1990, 3.1 immigrants arrived for every 1,000 residents; in the 10 years prior to 1890, 9.2 for every 1,000. Now, consider three indices of assimilation — language, home ownership and intermarriage. The 1990 Census revealed that “a majority of immigrants from each of the fifteen most common countries of origin spoke English ‘well’ or ‘very well’ after ten years of residence.” The children of immigrants tend to be bilingual and proficient in Engl ish. “By the third generation, the original language is lost in the majority of immigrant families.” Hence the description of America as a “graveyard” for languages. By 1996 foreign-born immigrants who had arrived before 1970 had a home ownership rate of 75.6 percent, higher than the69.8 percent rate among native-born Americans.Foreign-born Asians and Hispanics “have higher rates of intermarriage than do U.S.- born whites and blacks.”By the third generation, one third of Hispanic women are married to non-Hispanics, and 41 percent of Asian-American women are married to non-Asians.Rodriguez notes that children in remote villages around the world are fans of superstars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks, yet “some Americans fear that immigrants living within the United States remain somehow immune to the nation’s assimilative power.”Are there divisive issues and pockets of seething anger in America? Indeed. It is big enough to have a bit of everything. But particularly when viewed against America’s turbulent past, today’s social indices hardly suggest a dark and deteriorating social environment.21.The word “homogenizing” (Paragraph 1) most probably meansA.identifying.B.associating.C.assimilating.D.monopolizing.22.According to the author, the department stores of the 19th centuryA.played a role in the spread of popular culture.B.became intimate shops for common consumers.C.satisfied the needs of a knowledgeable elite.D.owed its emergence to the culture of consumption.23.The text suggests that immigrants now in the U.S.A.are resistant to homogenization.B.exert a great influence on American culture.C.are hardly a threat to the common culture.D.constitute the majority of the population.24.Why are Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks mentioned in Paragraph 5?A.To prove their popularity around the world.B.To reveal the public’s fear of immigrants.C.To give examples of successful immigrants.D.To show the powerful influence of American culture.25.In the author’s opinion, the absorption of immigrants into American society isA.rewarding.B.successful.C.fruitless.D.harmful.Text 2Stratford-on-Avon, as we all know, has only one industry — William Shakespeare —but there are two distinctly separate and increasingly hostile branches. There is the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), which presents superb productions of the plays at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre on the Avon. And there are the townsfolk who largely live off the tourists who come, not to see the plays, but to look at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Shakespeare’s birthplace and the other sights. The worthy residents of Stratford doubt that the theater adds a penny to their revenue. They frankly d islike the RSC’s actors, them with their long hair and beards and sandals and noisiness. It’s all deliciously ironic when you consider that Shakespeare, who earns their living, was himself an actor (with a beard) and did his share of noise-making.The tourist streams are not entirely separate. The sightseers who come by bus — and often take in Warwick Castle and Blenheim Palace on the side —don’t usually see the plays, and some of them are even surprised to find a theatre in Stratford. However, the playgoers do manage a little sight-seeing along with their playgoing. It is the playgoers, the RSC contends, who bring in much of the town’s revenue because they spend the night (some of them four or five nights) pouring cash into the hotels and restaurants. The sightseers can take in everything and get out of town by nightfall. The townsfolk don’t see it this way and the local council does not contribute directly to the subsidy of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Stratford cries poor traditionally. Nevertheless every hotel in town seems to be adding a new wing or cocktail lounge. Hilton is building its own hotel there, which you may be sure will be decorated with Hamlet Hamburger Bars, the Lear Lounge, the Banquo Banqueting Room, and so forth, and will be very expensive.Anyway, the townsfolk can’t understand why the Royal Shakespeare Company needs a subsidy. (The theatre has broken attendance records for three years in a row. Last year its 1,431 seats were 94 per cent occupied all year long and this year they’l l do better.) The reason, of course, is that costs have rocketed and ticket prices have stayed low.It would be a shame to raise prices too much because it would drive away the young people who are Stratford’s most attractive clientele. They come entirely for the plays, not the sights. They all seem to look alike (though they come from all over) — lean, pointed, dedicated faces, wearing jeans and sandals, eating their buns and bedding down for the night on the flagstones outside the theatre to buy the 20 seats and 80 standing-room tickets held for the sleepers and sold to them when the box office opens at 10:30 a.m.26.From the first two paragraphs, we learn thatA.the townsfolk deny the RSC’s contribution to the town’s revenue.B.the actors of the RSC imitate Shakespeare on and off stage.C.the two branches of the RSC are not on good terms.D.the townsfolk earn little from tourism.27.It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 thatA.the sightseers cannot visit the Castle and the Palace separately.B.the playgoers spend more money than the sightseers.C.the sightseers do more shopping than the playgoers.D.the playgoers go to no other places in town than the theater.28.By saying “Stratford cries poor traditionally” (Paragraph 4), the author implies thatA.Stratford cannot afford the expansion projects.B.Stratford has long been in financial difficulties.C.the town is not really short of money.D.the townsfolk used to be poorly paid.29.According to the townsfolk, the RSC deserves no subsidy becauseA.ticket prices can be raised to cover the spending.B.the company is financially ill-managed.C.the behavior of the actors is not socially acceptable.D.the theatre attendance is on the rise.30.From the text we can conclude that the authorA.is supportive of both sides.B.favors the townsfolk’s view.C.takes a detached attitude.D.is sympathetic to the RSC.Text 3When prehistoric man arrived in new parts of the world, something strange happened to the large animals: they suddenly became extinct. Smaller species survived. The large, slow- growing animals were easy game, and were quickly hunted to extinction. Now something similar could be happening in the oceans. That the seas are being overfished has been known for years. What researchers such as Ransom Myers and Boris Worm have shown is just how fast things are changing. They have looked at half a century of data from fisheries around the world. Their methods do not attempt to estimate the actual biomass (the amount of living biological matter) of fish species in particular parts of the ocean, but rather changes in that biomass over time. According to their latest paper published in Nature, the biomass of large predators (animals that kill and eat other animals) in a new fishery is reduced on average by 80% within 15 years of the start of exploitation. In some long-fished areas, it has halved again since then.Dr. Worm acknowledges that these figures are conservative. One reason for this is that fishing technology has improved. Today’s vessels can find their prey u sing satellites and sonar, which were not available 50 years ago. That means a higher proportion of what is in the sea is being caught, so the real difference between present and past is likely to be worse than the one recorded by changes in catch sizes. In the early days, too, longlines would have been more saturated with fish. Some individuals would therefore not have been caught, since no baited hooks would have been available to trap them, leading to an underestimate of fish stocks in the past. Furthermore, in the early days of longline fishing, a lot of fish were lost to sharks after they had been hooked. That is no longer a problem, because there are fewer sharks around now.Dr. Myers and Dr. Worm argue that their work gives a correct baseline, which future management efforts must take into account. They believe the data support an idea current among marine biologists, that of the “shifting baseline”.The notion is that people have failed to detect the massive changes which have happened in the ocean because they have been looking back only a relatively short time into the past. That matters because theory suggests that the maximum sustainable yield that can be cropped from a fishery comes when the biomass of a target species is about 50% of its original levels. Most fisheries are well below that, which is a bad way to do business.31.The extinction of large prehistoric animals is noted to suggest thatrge animals were vulnerable to the changing environment.B.small species survived as large animals disappeared.rge sea animals may face the same threat today.D.slow-growing fish outlive fast-growing ones.32.We can infer from Dr. Myers and Dr. Worm’s paper thatA.the stock of large predators in some old fisheries has reduced by 90%.B.there are only half as many fisheries as there were 15 years ago.C.the catch sizes in new fisheries are only 20% of the original amount.D.the number of large predators dropped faster in new fisheries than in the old.33.By saying “these figures are conservative” (Paragraph 3), Dr. Worm means thatA.fishing technology has improved rapidly.B.the catch-sizes are actually smaller than recorded.C.the marine biomass has suffered a greater loss.D.the data collected so far are out of date.34.Dr. Myers and other researchers hold thatA.people should look for a baseline that can work for a longer time.B.fisheries should keep their yields below 50% of the biomass.C.the ocean biomass should be restored to its original level.D.people should adjust the fishing baseline to the changing situation.35.The author seems to be mainly concerned with most fisheries’A.management efficiency.B.biomass level.C.catch-size limits.D.technological application.Text 4Many things make people think artists are weird. But the weirdest may be this: artists’ only job is to explore emotions, and yet they choose to focus on the ones that feel bad. This wasn’t always so. The earliest forms of art, like painting and music, are those best suited for expressing joy. But somewhere from the 19th century onward, more artists began seeing happiness as meaningless, phony or, worst of all, boring, as we went from Wordsworth’s daffodils to Baudelaire’s flowers of evil. You could argue that art became more skeptical of happiness because modern times have seen so much misery. But it’s not as if earlier times didn’t know perpetual war, disaster and the massacre of innocents. The reason, in fact, may be just the opposite: there is too much damn happiness in the world today. After all, what is the one modern form of expression almost completely dedicated to depicting happiness? Advertising. The rise of anti-happy art almost exactly tracks the emergence of mass media, and with it, a commercial culture in which happiness is not just an ideal but an ideology.People in earlier eras were surrounded by reminders of misery. They worked until exhausted, lived with few protections and died young. In the West, before mass communication and literacy, the most powerful mass medium was the church, which reminded worshippers that their souls were in danger and that they would someday be meat for worms. Given all this, they did not exactly need their art to be a bummer too.Today the messages the average Westerner is surrounded with are not religious but commercial, and forever happy. Fast-food eaters, news anchors, text messengers, all smiling, smiling, smiling. Our magazines feature beaming celebrities and happy families in perfect homes. And since these messages have an agenda — to lure us to open our wallets — they make the very idea of happiness seem unreliable. “Celebrate!” commanded the ads for the arthritis drug Celebrex, before we found out it could increase the risk of heart attacks. But what we forget — what our economy depends on us forgetting — is that happiness is more than pleasure without pain. The things that bring the greatest joy carry the greatest potential for loss and disappointment. Today, surrounded by promises of easy happiness, we need art to tell us, as religion once did, Memento mori: remember that you will die, that everything ends, and that happiness comes not in denying this but in living with it. It’s a message even more bitter than a clove cigarette, yet, somehow, a breath of fresh air.36.By citing the examples of poets Wordsworth and Baudelaire, the author intends to showthatA.poetry is not as expressive of joy as painting or music.B.art grows out of both positive and negative feelings.C.poets today are less skeptical of happiness.D.artists have changed their focus of interest.37.The word “bummer” (Paragraph 5) most probably means somethingA.religious.B.unpleasant.C.entertaining.mercial.38.In the author’s opinion, advertisingA.emerges in the wake of the anti-happy art.B.is a cause of disappointment for the general public.C.replaces the church as a major source of information.D.creates an illusion of happiness rather than happiness itself.39.We can learn from the last paragraph that the author believesA.happiness more often than not ends in sadness.B.the anti-happy art is distasteful but refreshing.C.misery should be enjoyed rather than denied.D.the anti-happy art flourishes when economy booms.40.Which of the following is true of the text?A.Religion once functioned as a reminder of misery.B.Art provides a balance between expectation and reality.C.People feel disappointed at the realities of modern society.D.Mass media are inclined to cover disasters and deaths.Part BDirections:In the following article, some sentences have been removed. For Questions 41-45, choose the most suitable one from the list A-G to fit into each of the numbered gaps. There are two extra choices, which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.(10 points)On the north bank of the Ohio river sits Evansville, Ind., home of David Williams, 52, and of a riverboat casino (a place where gambling games are played). During several years of gambling in that casino, Williams, a state auditor earning $35,000 a year, lost approximately $175,000. He had never gambled before the casino sent him a coupon for$20 worth of gambling. He visited the casino, lost the $20 and left. On his second visit he lost $800. The casino issued to him, as a good customer, a “Fun Card,”which when used in the casino earns points for meals and drinks, and enables the casino to track the user’s gambling activities. For Williams, those activities became what he calls “electronic heroin.”(41) . In 1997 he lost $21,000 to one slot machine in two days. In March 1997 he lost $72,186. He sometimes played two slot machines at a time, all night, until the boat docked at 5 a.m., then went back aboard when the casino opened at 9 a.m. Now he is suing the casino, charging that it should have refused his patronage because it knew he was addicted. It did know he had a problem. In March 1998, a friend of Williams’s got him involuntarily confined to a treatment center for addictions, and wrote to inform the casino of Williams’s gambling problem. The casino included a photo of Williams among those o f banned gamblers, and wrote to him a “cease admissions” letter. Noting the “medical/psychological” nature of problem gambling behavior, the letter said that before being readmitted to the casino he would have to present medical/psychological information demonstrating that patronizing the casino would pose no threat to his safety or well-being.(42) .The Wall Street Journal reports that the casino has 24 signs warning: “Enjoy the fun... and always bet with your head, not over it.” Every entrance ticket li sts a toll-free number for counseling from the Indiana Department of Mental Health. Nevertheless, Williams’s suit charges that the casino, knowing he was “helplessly addicted to gambling,” intentionally worked to “lure” him to “engage in conduct against his will.” Well.(43) .The fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders says “pathological gambling” involves persistent, recurring and uncontrollable pursuit less of money than of the thrill of taking risks in quest of a windfall.(44) . Pushed by science, or what claims to be science, society is reclassifying what once were considered character flaws or moral failings as personality disorders akin to physical disabilities.(45) .Forty-four states have lotteries, 29 have casinos, and most of these states are to varying degrees dependent on — you might say addicted to — revenues from wagering. And since the first Internet gambling site was created in 1995, competition for gamblers’ dollars has b ecome intense. The Oct. 28 issue of Newsweek reported that 2 million gamblers patronize 1,800 virtual casinos every week. With $3.5 billion being lost on Internet wagers this year, gambling has passed pornography as the Web’s most profitable business.A.Alth ough no such evidence was presented, the casino’s marketing department continued topepper him with mailings. And he entered the casino and used his Fun Card without being detected.B.It is unclear what luring was required, given his compulsive behavior. And in what sensewas his will operative?C.By the time he had lost $5,000 he said to himself that if he could get back to even, he wouldquit. One night he won $5,500, but he did not quit.D.Gambling has been a common feature of American life forever, but for a long time itwas broadly considered a sin, or a social disease. Now it is a social policy: the most important and aggressive promoter of gambling in America is the government.E.David Williams’s suit should trouble this gambling nation. But don’t bet on it.F.It is worrisome that society is medicalizing more and more behavioral problems, oftendefining as addictions what earlier, sterner generations explained as weakness of will. G.The anonymous, lonely, undistracted nature of online gambling is especially conduciveto compulsive behavior. But even if the government knew how to move against Internet gambling, what would be its grounds for doing so?Part CDirections:Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (10 points) Is it true that the American intellectual is rejected and considered of no account in his society? I am going to suggest that it is not true. Father Bruckberger told part of the story when he observed that it is the intellectuals who have rejected America. But they have done more than that. They have grown dissatisfied with the role of the intellectual. It is they, not America, who have become anti-intellectual.First, the object of our study pleads for definition. What is an intellectual? (46) I shall define him as an individual who has elected as his primary duty and pleasure in life the activity of thinking in a Socratic (苏格拉底) way about moral problems. He explores such problems consciously, articulately, and frankly, first by asking factual questions, then by asking moral questions, finally by suggesting action which seems appropriate in the light of the factual and moral information which he has obtained. (47) His function is analogous to that of a judge, who must accept the obligation of revealing in as obvious a manner as possible the course of reasoning which led him to his decision. This definition excludes many individuals usually referred to as intellectuals —the average scientist, for one. (48) I have excluded him because, while his accomplishments may contribute to the solution of moral problems, he has not been charged with the task of approaching any but the factual aspects of those problems. Like other human beings, he encounters moral issues even in the everyday performance of his routine duties — he is not supposed to cook his experiments, manufacture evidence, or doctor his reports. (49) But his primary task is not to think about the moral code which governs his activity, any more than a businessman is expected to dedicate his energies to an exploration of rules of conduct in business. During most of his waking life he will take his code for granted, as the businessman takes his ethics. The definition also excludes the majority of teachers, despite the fact that teaching has traditionally been the method whereby many intellectuals earn their living. (50) They may teach very well, and more than earn their salaries, but most of them make little or no independent reflections on human problems which involve moral judgment. This description even fits the majority of eminent scholars. Being learned in some branch of human knowledge is one thing: living in “public and illustrious thoughts,” as Em erson would say, is something else.Section III WritingPart A51.Directions:You want to contribute to Project Hope by offering financial aid to a child in a remote area. Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C and D. Choose the best one and mark the corresponding letter with a single bar across the square brackets on your machine-scoring ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneAt all ages and at all stages of life, fear presents a problem to almost everyone.“We are largely the playthings of our fears,”wrote the British author Horace Walpole many years ago.“To one, fear of the dark;to another,of physical pain;to a third,of public ridicule;to a fourth,of poverty;to a fifth,of loneliness —for all of us our particular creature waits in a hidden place.”Fear is often a useful emotion. When you become frightened, many physical changes occur within your body. Your heartbeat and responses quicken;your pupils expand to admit more light;large quantities of energy-producing adrenalin(肾上腺素)are poured into your bloodstream. Confronted with a fire or accident, fear can fuel life-saving flight(逃离). Similarly, when a danger is psychological rather than physical, fear can force you to take self-protective measures. It is only when fear is disproportional to the danger at hand that it becomes a problem. Some people are simply more vulnerable to fear than others. A visit to the newborn nursery of any large hospital will demonstrate that, from the moment of their births,a few fortunate infants respond calmly to sudden fear-producing situations such as a loudly slammed door. Yet a neighbor in the next bed may cry out with profound fright. From birth,he or she is more prone to learn fearful responses because he or she has inherited a tendency to be more sensitive.Further, psychologists know that our early experiences and relationships strongly shape and determine our later fears. A young man named Bill, for example, grew up with a father who regarded each adversity as a temporary obstacle to be overcome with imagination and courage. Using his father as a model,Bill came to welcome adventure and to trust his own ability to solve problems.Phil’s dad, however, spent most of his time trying to protect himself and his family. Afraid to risk the insecurity of a job change,he remained unhappy in one position. He avoided long vacations because“the car might break down.”Growing up in such a home,Phil naturally learned to become fearful and tense.31. In the last sentence of Paragraph 1,“our particular creature”refers to .A. fear of somethingB. a fierce beastC. physical painD. public ridicule32. Fear can be useful emotion to us because it can .A. stimulate many physical changes within our bodyB. quicken our heartbeat and responsesC. pour large quantities of adrenaline into our bloodstreamD. help us respond quickly to danger and protect ourselves33. Fear becomes a problem only when .A. the danger is thought greater than it really isB. the danger is more psychological than physicalC. one cannot stand the dangerD. one is not well prepared for it34. Different responses of newborn infants to a loudly slammed door imply that .A. some people are inherently more easily affected by dangerB. people’s response to stimuli is not an inherited featureC. some people seem to be very sensitive to noiseD. people sometimes seem to turn a deaf ear to noise35. Psychologists have found that our later fears are determined largely byour .A. home educationB. school educationC. parents’ lifestyleD. early experiencesPassage TwoSea horses are unusual parents. The female sea horses lay the eggs, but unlike other creatures,it’s the males that give birth to the young.Male sea horse have a fold of skin on their bellies that forms a pocket, called a brood pouch. During the breeding season, the sea horse’s pouch swells to receive eggs. A female sea horse lays up to 200 eggs at a time in the pouch. Then she swims off, leaving her male partner to care for the developing eggs and give birth to young sea horses. The female will return every day to check on her mate and the eggs, but she doesn’t stay long, nor does she take part in the birth. It takes from two to six weeks for the eggs in the male’s pouch to develop. During this time the male avoids open water and hides in sea grass. His big pouch makes it difficult for him to swim,so the male often uses his tail to grasp a piece of sea grass. Firmly, gripping the grass,he will stay perfectly still for hours or even days. The male sea horse will change his color to blend with his surroundings and avoid being seen by predators who will try to eat him or poke holes in his pouch to get the eggs. The eggs hatch inside the male’s pouch. When the babies begin moving around, the male sea horse knows it’s time for them to be born. He grabs a sea grass stem with his tail and begins rocking, bending, and stretching his body back and forth. This causes the opening to enlarge until it is wide enough for the first baby sea horse to shoot out. The father sea horse continues rocking, bending, and stretching his body so that the rest of the babies can be born. Sometimes he has to press his pouch against a rock or some stiff seaweed to force the young out. Sea horse babies are born in groups of five or more. Sometimes it takes two days for the father sea horse to give birth to all his young. He is very tired when it’s over.Soon after giving birth to one brood, the male will approach his mate and show her his empty pouch. This tells her he is ready to receive eggs again.36. What part does the female sea horse play in having babies?A. Receiving eggs. B. Laying eggs.C. Hatching eggs.D. Protecting eggs.37. What can be learned from the passage about giving birth to baby sea horses?A. It is dangerous for the female.B. It happens once a year.C. It is hard work for the male.D. It occurs in the deep sea.38. To protect himself and his eggs, the male sea horse does all the following EXCEPT .A. changing his colorB. gripping a piece of grassC. staying motionlessD. enlarging his pouch39. The author suggests when sea horse babies are ready to be born .A. the male sea horse seems very happyB. it is difficult for them to come outC. the female sea horse joins the maleD. they need large space in the pouch40. Which fact does the author want the reader to remember most?A. The male sea horse gives birth to the young.B. The female sea horse lays up to 200 eggs at a time.C. Baby sea horse are born in groups of five or more.D. The female will return every day to check on the eggs.Passage ThreeWhen 23-year-old Eric Atienza graduated from college last year,he didn’t have a job. Not wanting to give up his apartment and move back with his parents,he did what many young Americans are doing:he signed up with a temp agency, which places workers on short-term jobs. Temporary workers such as Atienza comprise 20 percent of the US workforce. In 1985,417000 workers were classified as temporary help. In 2005,there are more than 2.5 million, according to Labour Department data. Using temporary workers allows companies to increase or decrease the number of staff as their workloads change. It also allows companies to avoid the costs involved in hiring and firing long-term employees. Many temp agency owners and career specialists say temping is a good way for recent graduates to get experience.“Short-term jobs let graduates try out different companies to find the best fit,”said Pegi Wheatley, owner of McCall Staffing,a San Francisco temp agency. But things don’t always work out that way.“When I started temping,I had this notion that a temporary job could turn full-time. It worked for a friend of mine, but that didn’t happen for me,”said Atienza, who quickly became bored with his office work. Atienza stayed with the temp agency because he could earn US $ 10 an hour doing office work. Other short-term jobs, such as working as a store clerk or in a café,pay about US $ 7.But there were trade-offs for the higher pay. Because in the US,health insurance is provided through employer, most temps are not eligible for workplace health benefits. Atienza ran the risk that an accident or illness would land him in the hospital with no way to pay the bill. Other drawbacks, though less serious, still mean that temping for most graduates is exactly what its name implies—a temporary choice. Instability, gaps between contracts, lack of vacation time and isolation from other employees are often-cited negatives.“Temping gave me the time to figure out what I wanted to do,because I could pay off my bills. But none of that came from the jobs themselves,”said Atienza, who quit temping last month in favor of a full-time job.41. Atienza took a short-term job mainly because .A. he didn’t want to give up his apartmentB. he liked to try out different companiesC. he wanted to get more experienceD. he couldn’t find a long-term job42. According to the passage,in the year of 2005,the United States had a workforce of more than .A. 25 millionB. 12.5 millionC. 4.17 millionD. 2.5 million43. Which is NOT mentioned as an advantage of temping?A. It gives recent graduates experience.B. It enables employers to adjust their workforce.C. A temporary job will turn full-time.D. Employers can reduce their costs.44. Atinenza stayed with the temp agency for some time because______.A. he liked his office workB. he was satisfied with the payC. his employer provided health insuranceD. he hated gaps between contracts 45. What does the word“trade-offs”in Paragraph five mean?A. BenefitsB. CompromisesC. RisksD. Disadvantages Passage FourScientists are hoping to eliminate malaria(疟疾)by developing a genetically modified mosquito that cannot transmit the disease. Malaria has long troubled the populations of South America,Africa, and Asia, where mosquito bites infect up to 500 million people a year with this serious and sometimes fatal parasitic blood disease. For generations, scientists have been trying to eliminate malaria by developing new drugs and using pesticide(杀虫剂)to wipe out local mosquito populations. But these measures aren’t working—and some scientists, like Greg Lanzaro, say that because of drug resistance and population changes, malaria is actually more prevalent now than it was 20 years ago. Lanzaro says he has a better way to stop the spread of malaria:genetically modifying mosquitoes so they are unable to carry the disease.Lanzaro and his colleagues are planning a multi-year project to produce malaria-resistant mosquitoes—and he thinks they can do it within five years.“We can get foreign genes into mosquitoes and they go where they’re supposed to go,”Lanzaro says, pointing out that scientists have already succeeded in genetically engineering mosquitoes that cannot transmit malaria to birds and mice. And,he says, scientists are quickly making progress on genes that block transmission of the disease to humans as well. The most difficult part scientifically,Lanzaro says,is figuring out how to get the lab-engineered mosquitoes to spread their genes into natural populations after all,he points out,it’s useless to engineer mosquitoes in the lab that can’t transmit malaria when there are millions out in the wild that can. To solve this problem,Lanzaro wants to load up a mobile piece of DNA with the malaria-resistant gene, and then insert it into a group of mosquito embryos. The malaria-resistant gene would be integrated directly into the mosquitoes’ DNA,making it impossible for those mosquitoes to transmit the parasite that causes malaria. In this way a small group of lab-raised mosquitoes could be released into the wild, and by interbreeding with wild mosquitoes, eventually transmit the beneficial gene to the entire population.46. One reason for malaria to be more widespread now is that .A. more people have moved to malaria-infected areasB. mosquitoes have become resistant to pesticidesC. genetically modified mosquitoes still transmit the diseaseD. mosquitoes bite as many as 500 million people a year47. Lanzaro is hopeful that in a few year man can .A. start to eliminate malariaB. cure parasitic blood diseasesC. prevent mice form transmitting parasitesD. acquire immunity against malaria48. Lanzaro is confident that scientists can block the transmissions of malaria to humans because .A. natural mosquito populations do not changeB. scientists have succeeded with birds and miceC. foreign genes always go where they are requiredD. lab-raised mosquitoes will not be resistant to drugs49. What is the most difficult part of Lanzaro’s project?A. Spreading malaria-resistant genes into natural mosquito populations.B. Raising malaria-resistant mosquitoes.C. According to the passage,a fundamental way to wipe out malaria is to .A. develop new malaria-resistant drugsB. produce effective pesticides to kill mosquitoesC. change the genetic makeup of mosquitoesD. remove people from malaria-infected areasPassage FiveAccording to Scott Adams, creator of the comic strip(系列漫画)Dilbert, the annual performance review is“one of the most frightening and weakening experiences in every employee’s life. Adam’s stories and comic figures poke fun at the workplace, but his characterization of people’s feelings about the annual performance review has its serious side. Although a recent study of 437 companies indicates that effective annual performance reviews can help raise profits, most employees of those companies hate them. In theory, annual performance reviews are constructive and positive interactions between managers and employees working together to attain maximum performance and strengthen the organization. In reality, they often create division, undermine morale, and spark anger and jealousy. Thus, although the object of the annual performance review is to improve performance,it often has the opposite result.A programmer at an IT firm was stunned to learn at her annual performance review that she was denied a promotion because she wasn’t a“team player”. What were the data used to make this judgment? She didn’t smile in the company photo. Although this story might sound as if it came straight out of Dilbert,it is a true account of one woman’s experience. By following a few ideas and guidelines from industry analysis, this kind of ordeal can be avoided:To end the year with a positive and useful performance review, managers and employees must start the year by working together to establish clear goals and expectations. It may be helpful to allow employees to propose a list of people associated with the company who will be in a good position to assess their performance at the end of the year;these people may be co-workers,suppliers,or even customers. Goals should be measurable but flexible, and everyone should sign off on the plan. By checking employees’ progress at about nine months, managers can give them a chance to correct mistakes and provide guidance to those who need it before the year is out. When conducting the review, managers should highlight strengths and weaknesses during the past year and discuss future responsibilities, avoiding punishment or blame. In short, when employees leave their performance reviews, they should be focusing on what they can do better in the year ahead, not worrying about what went into their files about the past.51. In his comic strip Dilbert,Scott Adams .A. make fun of working peopleB. tells a story about as woman employeeC. promote team spirit among co-workersD. mocks annual performance reviews52. All the following are mentioned as the drawbacks of annual performance reviews EXCEPTA. reducing efficiencyB. creating tensionC. undermining moraleD. inducing anger53. The annual performance reviews,to be effective, must focus on .A. making employees aware of their company’s future goalsB. involving employees in assessing their own performanceC. encouraging employees to achieve better future performanceD. highlighting what responsibilities employees have failed in55. The general attitude of the author toward Adam’s comic strip Dilbert is...A. negativeB. positiveC. neutralD. unclearPart Ⅳ Cloze Test(15 minutes,15 points)Directions:In this part, there is a passage with fifteen blanks. Reading Comprehension(每小题2分,共30分)There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage isfollowed by some questions or unfinishedstatements. For each of them there are fourchoices marked A), B), C) and D). You shoulddecide on the best choice.Passage 1In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates(考生)for the doctor’s degree.Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an objective test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.31.In the Middle Ages students________.A) took objective tests B) were timed by electric clocksC) specialized in two subjects D) never wrote exams32.The main idea of paragraph 3 is that_______.A) workers now take examinations B) the population has grownC) there are only written exams today D) examinations are now writtenand timed33. Microwave oven is fast and convenient, economical and practical, it is the ideal cooking tool of modern fast rhythm life, but the microwave oven has certain harm to human health. The microwave is a very short electromagnetic wave, which belongs to the part of the energy spectrum of nature. The sun produces microwaves, but the sun is a major difference between the microwave and the microwave. The difference is that the microwave oven is produced by alternating current. How does a microwave oven cook food? Alternating current canproduce electromagnetic waves of high frequency. Water molecules have positive and negative, so when the water to accept positive and negative alternating microwave energy, water molecules will quickly turn. This is a little similar with a pin on the plane were round in the case of suction. Microwave oven with alternating current generated by the microwave, so that the water molecules in the food at a rate of hundreds of millions of times per second rotation, resulting in a huge friction between the molecules, so that the rapid heating of food.As a matter of fact, the quality inspection agencies only care about whether there is a microwave leakage in the microwave oven. Surprisingly, these quality testing agencies have never questioned whether the microwave food itself is safe. 1991, due to a public lawsuit, people began to realize that microwave food is not one hundred percent safe. The family of a woman named Norma Livot sued for her death by mistake.Norma went to the hospital for hip replacement surgery. The operation was successful, Norma died. After Norma died of a blood transfusion, blood is the result of microwave heating. This is the first timethat the microwave oven has caused damage to the chemical properties of the heated objects. If the blood is heated to body temperature in a microwave oven, can make the blood contained in the lethal toxicity to cause, so we use the higher temperature in the longer heating food, will have what? The food molecules absorb a large amount of energy. The molecular structure of these energies to decomposition of protein, the result usually does not occur in the molecular mutation. As a result, many new strange molecules have emerged. The problem is here, the molecular structure of food has changed, resulting in the human body can not recognize the. These strange new molecules are not acceptable to the human body, some are toxic, but also may cause cancer. Therefore, people often eat microwave food or animal, the body will be a certain physiological changes. The Swiss Association of the royal science and technology Hans Gert, and Boernade Dr. found microwave heating destroyed the food nutrition extreme. They measured the pathological changes in the blood of volunteers who ate microwave food. What's shocking is that the redblood cells in the blood of these people are reduced, which means that the oxygen in the blood is reduced, and the body tissue is unable to get the required oxygen. In contrast, white blood cells and cholesterol have increased. Increased white blood cells can cause stress and strain in the body, usually only when the human body is infected with acute disease, bacterial infection or damaged cells, the white blood cells will rise. In addition, lymphocytes and white blood cells play an important role in the production of antibodies.Russia's research shows that microwave radiation is not only harmful to health, but also the consumption of microwave food can cause serious health problems. In the United States, Origen scientists in Portland has published a study found in russia. No matter what kind of food once the microwave heating will produce a known carcinogen. Meat, milk, Cereals, fruits and vegetables will produce a cancer causing chemicals. People who eat microwave food, digestive system disorders, disorders of the lymphatic system, and cancer cells in the blood. People who often eat microwave food are more likely to suffer from stomach cancer, digestive system will gradually appear problems. Scientists also found that each microwave oven radiation will leak, microwave cookingof food will produce toxic and carcinogenic appendages, microwave food nutritional value was reduced by 60% to 90%, including minerals and enzymes, vitamin B, C and E and other substances, even even protein nutrition million points also reduced the. Hormones can also be abnormal, especially in the secretion and balance of male and female hormones. Long term consumption of microwave food can cause permanent brain damage, resulting in a decline in memory, concentration, mood swings, mental decline.17 carefully read the full text, for this paper intends to write a title. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.…Passage ThreeUntil 1847 the federal postal system had operated without stamps. To claim a letter, the recipient, rather than the sender, paid its postage. Stamps promised to flip this tradition on its head by shifting responsibility for paying postage from the recipient to the letter writer. Early reluctance to use stamps actually relied on something more mysterious but no less important. A stamped or prepaid letter was sometimes seen as a way to insult the recipient because prepaying a letter suggested that he was too poor to pay for it himself.Given the cost involved, this was not as odd as it now seems. Says Michael Laurence, editor of Linn’s Stamp News, “paying for a letter was like receiving a collect call from China.” In 1845 a congressman calculated that a letter sent from the East or South to the Northwest cost the value of a bushel (蒲式耳) of wheat –or a day’s labor. Meg Ausman, the historian of the U.S. Postal Service, says that in the 1830s one angered individual harassed an enemy by sending him letters stuffed with blank pages.Excessive costs probably kept some Americans fromcommunicating through mails. Many people who did receive mail simply refused to p[ay, rejecting the letter outright, which meant big headaches for the Post Office in mountains of dead letters. These had to be returned to the sender at government expense; the Post Office wound up paying for two deliveries with nothing in return. Some historians credit one Rowland Hill, a British reformer and educator, with the idea of sticking a stamp on a letter before sending it. It seems to have struck him one day as he watched a housemaid receive a letter. She carefully scanned the envelope, tried to understand a coded message from her lover, then refused to accept the mail. Postage was too expensive, Hill realized, and paid for by the wrong person. Prepaid stamps were the answer to both problems.26. What does the phrase “to flip tradition on its head” most probably mean?A. The introduction of stamps would change the situation.B. Stamps would be used without the top parts.C. The use of stamps was the essence of the tradition.D. The tradition would abandon the responsibility.27.According to the author, taking prepaid letters as an insult ______ .A. was what people then would like to doB. is what people nowadays think of as acceptableC. was not as strange then as people think nowadaysD. is too easy for people nowadays to understand28. 2006考研英语作文

2006考研英语作文

2006考研英语作文英文回答:In 2006, I took the national entrance exam for postgraduate studies. It was a challenging experience, but also a rewarding one. I remember feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement as I sat down to take the exam. The pressure was on, as the results would determine my future academic and professional path. The exam consisted of multiple choice questions, essay writing, and a foreign language test. I had spent months preparing for it, studying late into the night and practicing past exam papers. Despite the hard work, I still felt anxious about how I would perform on the day of the exam.During the essay writing section, I was given a topic related to environmental protection. I remember feeling relieved, as it was a topic I had prepared for. I wroteabout the importance of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable living. I also provided examples of successful environmental initiatives from around the world. As for the foreign language test, I chose to take the English proficiency exam. I had been studying English for years, but I still found the test challenging. Thelistening section was particularly difficult, as the speakers had different accents and spoke at a fast pace. However, I managed to answer the questions to the best of my ability.Overall, the exam was a test of both knowledge and endurance. I was mentally and physically exhausted by the end of it, but I felt a sense of accomplishment knowingthat I had given it my all.中文回答:2006年,我参加了研究生入学考试。

Each passage is followed with five suggested questions. Choose the one that you think is the best.Passage 1Questions 51-55 are based on the following passageGot the sniffles? You’re not alone. The common cold will strike in the United States more than 61 million times this year. That’s a lot of stuffy noses, sore throats, and coughs. You’d think scientists would have found a cure by now. For being so common, however, a cold is quite complex.A cold is caused by a virus. And it’s not just one type of virus. More than 200 viruses cause colds. A cold virus attacks healthy cells of the nose, throat, or lungs. The virus gets into the cells and takes control. A single virus makes hundreds or thousands of cold viruses inside each cell. Eventually, the cell bursts open and dies. The viruses, though, escape and attack other healthy cells. By now you’re sneezing and coughing. Your throat is sore. The viruses keep infecting your healthy cells.Only your body can fight cold viruses. Billions of white blood cells travel in the blood. White blood cells make antibodies. These proteins attach themselves to viruses and destroy them. It’s a slow process. Killing the viruses takes one to two weeks. What can you do to fight a cold? There isn’t much you can do. Antibiotic drugs don’t work against viruses. Nose drops and cough medicines only relieve symptoms. Chicken soup seems to help. Vitamin C may help too. A dose of 1000 milligrams of Vitamin C on the first day of a cold may quicken your recovery.Be healthy and you may not catch a cold at all. Eat a well-balanced diet and get eight hours of sleep each day. Exercise regularly. The cold virus spreads through the air, so stay away from coughing, sneezing people. Also, the cold virus can live up the three hours outside the body. That means you can pick it up from touching money, doorknobs, and other people. So wash your hands often. Prevention is the best action!51. This passage is mainly concerned with ________.A.antibodiesB.virusesC.antibioticsmon colds52. The common cold is started by __________.A.a low white-blood cell countB.a virusC.a poor dietD.shaking hands with other people53. We can conclude from this passage that the common cold _________.A.will be curable in the near futureB.causes fatigue and watery eyesC.is something people just have to live withD.can be prevented with nose drops54. In the second and third paragraphs, the author explains the working of a cold virus through_____________.A.a step-by-step explanationB.scientific studiesC.detailed word picturesD.a list of symptoms55. Antibodies are _________.A.proteins that attack virusesB.white blood cellsC.drugs that fight virusesD.vitaminsPassage 2Question 56-60 are based on the following passageLife really should be one long journey of joy for children born with a world of wealth at their feet.Internationally famous child doctor Robert Coles is the world’s top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-known book on the subject, “The Privileged Ones,”and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little. “Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich,” says the 53-year-old doctor, “such as better health, education and future work prospects. But most important is the quality of family life. Money can’t buy love.”《大学英语(2)》试题第5页(共8页)《大学英语(2)》试题第6页(共8页)It can buy a lot of other things, however; and that’s where the trouble starts. Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often become confused. Over-indulgence by their parents canmake them spoilt. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which causes feelings of restlessness.“But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world,” adds Mr. Coles, “and they are more self-assured.” The rich children inherit the property from their parents and enjoy a high income. So money will never be one of their problems. “However, they will have a sense of isolation,” warns Dr. Coles, “and they could suffer from the hardship of not being able to deal with the everyday world because they will never really be given the chance. Everything they have achieved is because of an accident of birth. There can be no tremendous inner satisfaction about that.”Today’s wealthy parents perhaps realize their riches can be more of a heavy load than a happiness to their children. So the first thing for them to consider is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.56. In his book “The Privileged Ones”, Dr. Coles implies that .A. there are fewer problems in the rich family than the poor familyB. rich children live a life of separation from the worldC. rich children usually enjoy more love than poor childrenD. the quality of rich children’s family life may not be high57. In the doctor’s view, .A. there are both advantages and disadvantages into being richB. traveling a lot will be beneficial to childrenC. rich children usually have little confidence in themselvesD. rich kids are often short of money because of their life of luxury58. Read the passages carefully and choose the best answer to each of the questions. Write your answers on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Many scientists today are convinced that life exists elsewhere in the universe-life probably much like that on our own planet. They reason in the following ways.As far as astronomers can determine, the entire universe is built of the same matter. They have no reason to doubt that matter obeys the same laws in every part of the universe. Therefore, it is reasonable to guess other stars, with their own planets, were born in the same way as our own solar system. What we know of life on earth suggests that life will arise wherever proper conditions exist.Life requires the right amount and kind of atmosphere. This eliminates all those planets in the universe that are not about the same size and weight as the truth. A smaller planet, would lose its atmosphere, a larger one would hold too much of it.Life also requires a steady supply of heat and light. This eliminates double stars, or stars that flare up suddenly. Only single stars that are steady sources of heat and light like our sun would qualify. Finally, life could evolve only if the planet is just the right distance from its sun. with a weaker sun than our own, the planet would have to be closer to it. With a stronger sun, it would have to be farther away.If we suppose that every star in the universe has a family of planets, then how many planetsmight support life? First, eliminate those stars that are not like our sun. Next, eliminate most of their planets: they are either too far from or too close to their suns. Then eliminate most of planets which are not the same size and weight as the earth. Finally, remember that the proper conditions do not necessarily mean that life actually does exist on a planet. It may not have begun yet, or it may have already died out. This process of elimination seems to leave very few planets on which earthlike life might be found. However, even if life could exist on only one planet in a million, there are so many billions if planets that this would still leave a vast number on which life could exist.Questions 1—5 are based on passage 1.1. Astronomers believe that matter in different parts of the universe _________.A. has different lawsB. has one common lawsC. shares the same lawsD. shares no common law2. The existence of life depends on all EXCEPT ___________.A. the right amount of atmosphereB. our own solar systemC. steady heat and lightD. the right distance from the sun3. Which of the following statements is INCORRECT? _________.A. The planet must be as big and heavy as the earthB. Proper conditions are essential to the existence of lifeC. Double stars can provide steady light and heatD. The distance between a planet and its sun should be right 4. What kind of planet might NOT support life? ___________.A. Most of the planets of the starsB. Stars similar to our sunC. Planets similar to the earthD. Planets with proper conditions5. At the end of the passage, the author suggests that _________.A. it is impossible for life to exist on planetsB. earthlike life could only exist on a few planetsC. life could exist on only one planet in a millionD. life could exist on a great number of planetsPassage 2American‟s high -school dropout rate is at an all-time low. College enrollment has gone up as adults resume their educations part-time. Corporations are spending an estimated $30 billions a year on courses to make workers more competitive. Our educational statistics don‟t evenmeasure the achievements in our more than 8,000 trade schools.A survey of East Asian scholars ranked universities of the world, where engineers, doctors, biologists and managers are trained. Of the top 12 schools, eight were in the United States. No wonder more than 360,000 foreign students are in U.S. universities. That‟s crude proof of the value of American education.Another encouraging development is the headway being made by women and blacks--despite the large numbers of both who are still in poverty. Women are moving into better jobs with a speed that must surprise even the most vigorous feminists. Their median weekly earnings now stand at 70 percent of the median earnings of men, considerably higher than the 63 percent of ten years ago. Young women (16 to 24 years old ) now have earnings that are 80 to 90 percent of those of comparatively aged men. Why should we think the next generation of working women will be less successful than this one?As for blacks, in the last decade their life expectancy has gone up, and infant mortality has lowered. There were a half million black college graduates in the United States in 1970 and one million in 1980. There are two million today. In 1988 there were more than 900,000 black families, comprising about 3.2 million people, with annual incomes higher than $50,000--twice the number in 1918, measure in constant dollars. The black middle class is here to stay.It is said the big issue of the 90s will be the environment. Should that happen, it will show just how remarkable our age is. For environmentalism is a crisis engendered by people living better. It is also a crisis that can be dealt with. In America, the environment, by many measures, is healthier than it was.Questions 6—10 are based on passage 2.6. It is said the big issue if the 90s will be ________.A.warB.black‟s life expectancyC.American educationD.The environmentPassage 3Sustainable development: China’s choice for the 21st century What will the earth look like in the 21st century? As acid rain, ozone depletion, and soil erosion destroy the earth‟negative effects of economic development, such as decreased forestgrown concerned about their future living space. In 1987, Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland introduced the …sustainable development‟and Development Council. The United Nations Environment and Development Conference held in Rio de Brazil, in 1992, accepted the new term and passed the framework document called …Agenda 21and environmental protection had finally achieved equal importance. It is universally acknowledged that the problem of environmental protection improvement will be solved only when it is considered in the context of development. At that very conference, Chinese PremierChina enacted Agenda 21 of China and the Plan for Priority Projects in China’s Agenda 21 It is of great international and historic significance for China, with the world‟s population and its long history, to carry out a strategy of sustained development, Maurice Strong, Secretary General of the UN Environment and Development Conference. F Passage 5So you want to be a pop star?1 So you dream of becoming a pop star, do you? What is the best way of getting a contract with a record company—sending in a demonstration tape( “sending a demo”), or doing concerts (“gigging”)?2 This question is like asking which came first, the chicken, or the egg? According to Eddie Lee, drummer with a group called Cool Shadows, in Shanghai, both demos and gigging are equally important. “Playing in gigs gives you good practise,”he asked, “and there is just a chance—a small one—that someone from a recording company might be there to hear you. But you can‟t rely on that: you have to send in demos too—that‟s the only way you can hope a topexecutive might hear your music.”3 But Tony Ho, who has played in several different bands in Guangzhou, believes that playing in gigs is very important. “You never know when an agent for a company is likely to turn up,” he says. “They hear your music, and they see you in action; if they like both, then you‟re in with a chance.”So what about demos? “Most of them are just thrown away,” he says. “They get hundreds of demos every year. There‟s no way they can listen to all of them!”4 Tammy Liu plays in all-girl group in Beijing. “It‟s not what you know—or what you do; it‟s who you know!”she says. “It‟s all about guanxi. Some of the stuff that gets released is rubbish—you can be sure that the group is related to someone big in the recording studio!”5 We asked a senior executive in the music business in London about this. “big business,” he said. “are the chairman‟s son-in-law!” So what is his advice?6 “Most record companies are looking for two things—agency has got all the right contacts in the music industry. That‟s whatwould never have succeeded by sending in a demo on cassette!”7 A good manager has the respect of management agencies, and can save a group wannabes a lot of time. But you still have to make good music—to. And you need to get the right equipment—good instruments, and so on—and a presentation. That means you must not just sound right—relationship with your audience.8don‟t give up your studies, and don‟chances of your lasting a long time are very small!Questions 31-40 are based on passage 531. This text is about the best way of getting a contract with a recording company.32. One method is by sending in a demonstration tape.33. Another method is by inviting someone from the company to a gig, or concert.34. Tony Ho thinks that demonstration tapes are a waste of time.35. Tammy Liu says it‟s not who you know that matters—it‟s what you know.36. The man in London said that you must have talent and enthusiasm to get accepted by recording company.37. He thinks that finding a good music agency is important.38. But the most important thing is to have a good relationship with your agency.39. A wannabe pop-star must sound right, must look right, and must have a good relationship with the audience.40. Even a successful pop-star may not last long, so study is also important.Part IV Short Answers(每小题4分,共20分)answers clear and short. The first step towards its invention was taken in 1873 but the personresponsible for developing it was John Logie Baird. In 1926 he gave the first demonstration of atelevision picture. As a home entertainment, television rapidly became more popular than any other form. Anews broadcast became more immediate when people could actually see the scene in questionand the movements of the figures. Films could also be available. One of the advantages of travelprogrammes was the glimpse of far-away places which many viewers would not otherwise haveseen. Though much of the entertainment was of a popular kind like competitions, someremarkable cultural programmes were also broadcast. Just as with radio in earlier days, a groupof actors and actresses became familiar in every household. One of the most popular programmeson television was sport and an interesting result of the television broadcast was the increasedattendance at the actual events. How far this was due to a growth interest in the game and howfar out of the people‟s desire to appear on the screen is not clear.Questions 41-45 are based on passage 6.41. Why is John Logie Baird famous in the history of television?42. Why did the television news attract more viewers than the broadcast on radio?43. Why were travel programmes so popular?44.
