美国生物统计专业的申请指南
生物统计这个专业对于很多学生来说,还是比拟(bǐjiào)生疏的,但这个专业也在逐步走更多学生的视野,因为这个专业的穿插性,就业前景非常看好。
生物统计,顾名思义就是用统计方法研究分析生物/医学上的数据。
这个(zhè ge)专业也是属于穿插性专业,跟统计生物信息计算机 (尤其是data mining) 等关系很亲密。
很多学校把生物统计设置在公共安康学院(SPH,School of Public Health) 里面。
SPH一般包括很多系比方生物统计,营养(yíngyǎng)Nutrition,传染病Epidemiology等,通常情况下SPH周围还会有Medical School和医院,这些机构/专业混合在一起提供了一个良好的科研环境。
以Harvard为例子,Harvard School of Public Health(公共安康学院),Harvard Medical School(医学院),Brigham Women’s Hospital(医院),Children’s Hospital,Dana Faber Cancer Institute(DFCI,全球顶尖癌症研究机构) 全在一起,很多教师同时在好几个单位任职。
其他的学校比方华盛顿大学,John Hopkins University等等都是如此。
也有些学校不单独设置生物统计系,但是他们统计或者应用统计系的很多教师实际上是研究生物统计的,比方 Stanford,这个系优势之一我觉得是允许学生们4年博士毕业(UCLA also 4yr) ,大多数program还是需要至少5年的。
生物(shēngwù)统计专业申请难度大吗?生物统计专业申请(shēnqǐng)难度用脚趾头也能想到了。
在理工科有全额奖学金的专业里面,生物统计算是最难的。
首先生物统计offer数量很少以Harvard department of Biostatistics为例,他们以前每年只有两个phd全奖名额给中国学生,他们喜欢北大和中科大的,Harvard 生物统计系有的教师号称他们系是全世界最好的 (实际上应该是U of Washington 齐名),但是也只有两个名额而已,比理工科其他竞争剧烈的专业比方EECS的顶级学校差多了。
