电影名称翻译原则
(一)直译法 (Transliteration) (二)音译法(Literal translation) (三)意译法(Liberal translation) (四)直意结合法
(一) 直译
直译是指在片名浅显易懂, 不会产生误解的情况 下, 按照片名的字面意思或发音直接翻译。如: 直译: Beauty and The Beast 美女和野兽 Brave Heart 勇敢的心 Qiuju Goes to Court 秋菊打官司 Raise the Red Lantern 大红灯笼高高挂 Turn left, Turn Right 向左走, 向右 走 Love of May 五月之恋
(四)直意结合法 Robinson Crusoe《鲁宾逊漂流记》 Shakespeare in Love《莎翁情史》 Notting Hill《诺丁山情缘》 Philladelphia《费城故事》 Shrek《怪物史莱克》 The Island《神秘岛》 The Ring《午夜凶铃》 The Year of the Yao《姚明年》

Over the past decades, with the increase in cultural exchanges, the western movies have gradually entered the Chinese market and held an important position in Chinese people’s recreational life. The film title, being short in form but rich in meaning, has its own cultural, linguistic, aesthetic features. A properly-translated English movie title should be concise, condensed and compact, which can grip the attention of the audience at their first sight and stimulate their association with the plot, reveal the theme or offer some clue. So they deserve careful investigation and consideration from the translator. However, as a branch of non-literary translation, it has not yet received due attention despite their importance. Therefore, in this thesis, I will introduce the general features and functions of English film titles, analyzing the translation techniques largely employed in film title translation. Furthermore, I will examine from the cultural perspective the different versions in Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and analyze the relevant strategies adopted and the effectiveness of these strategies. The social-cultural context of each region will be explored to find the factors resulting in this disunity in versions作为一种视听艺术,电影是最有影响力的大众媒体,它遵循并反映人民群众的生命,它也是一种特别的文化产品。

直译要避免望文生义,应仔细斟酌,避免误译。 如电影The Last of the Mohicans 在香港译为《最后一个 莫希干人》,但片名中mohicans 是复数,而且片中讲的不 仅仅是最后一个莫希干人,而是三个,尽管其中男主角拥有 白人血统,译为《最后的莫希干人》更合适。
2. 文化价值原则(value of culture)
文化价值的实现首先表现在充分理解、准确传递原片名所承载的文 化信息、情感、社会问题、哲理,避免出现误译。
So we can say that the film title is just like a bridge connecting people in different culture, the carrier of culture may varies, but what are behind the

1. 信息价值原则(value of information)
片名翻译要忠实传递与原片内容相关的信息,做到翻译标题形
式与原片内容的统一。捕风捉影,离题万里,背离信息价值的翻译是
culture, which in detail ,are the emotions, the annoyance resulted from

电影名的翻译
• (四)直意结合法法
• 有些片名虽然能按照字面意义直译,但译 文仍不够理想。此时,可采用直译与意译 相结合的方法,即在原意的基础上适当地 调整,按照电影内容及风格增词,减词, 换词,以求达到更佳的效果。
《人鬼情未了》 • Waterloo Bridge 《魂断蓝桥》 • The Bridge of Madison County《廊桥遗梦》 • Home Alone 《小鬼当家》
有时候,在翻译过程中也要求我们做到注重 审美,注重词语的使用,讲究炼字,达到传 神,使翻译更加具有文学色彩。这就要求我 们有深厚的文学功底。 i.e. (1)You Can’ t Take It With You V1: 《 你无法带走》V2: 《 浮生若梦》 (2) Ordinary People V1: 《普通人》 V2 《凡夫俗子》

Title Translation Strategies for English MoviesAbstract:As one of the important parts of film marketing and promotion, the translation of English movie titles plays an essential role in attracting audiences and conveying the theme and essence of the film. However, due to the different cultural backgrounds and language systems of different countries, the translation of movie titles is always a challenging task. This paper aims to explore some common translation strategies for English movie titles, including literal translation, transliteration, adaptation, and free translation, and analyzes their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, based on the analysis of several cases, this paper suggests that a successful translation of movie titles should take into account not only the linguistic and cultural factors but also the commercial and social factors. Keywords: English movie titles, translation strategies, cultural differences, marketingIntroduction:In the globalized world today, English-language films have become a universal cultural product that people from different cultures and languages can enjoy and appreciate. However, while the films themselves may cross cultural and linguistic barriers, their titles often do not, requiring creative translation. A good title can make or break a movie, and the choice of an effective title is an important part ofthe marketing campaign for any film. In this context, translation of English movie titles plays a vital role in attracting audiences and delivering the theme and essence of the movie.Yet the translation of movie titles is itself a challenging task. A movie title is not just a simple piece of vocabulary that can be translated word to word. It is an artistic expression that is as much a part of the film as its story and characters. This paper aims to explore some common translation strategies for English movie titles such asliteral translation, transliteration, adaptation, and free translation and analyze their advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, it will analyze some case studies and highlight examples to help understand the translation of English movie titles.1. The importance of English movie titlesMovie titles play a crucial role in determining how a film will be received. They are a mark of identity, informing audience members around the world about the world of cinema. The title of a film can make or break it. A memorable title can make a movie easier to remember long after it has left theaters, contributing to a successful marketing campaignthat can draw people into the theatre. Take, for instance, the film "Jaws", where the title itself has become an iconic cultural reference point. In contrast, a dull or obscuretitle provides little help or appeal and often fades from view quickly. In addition to its marketing value, a movie title creates a first impression of the film, and when the title is translated to another language, cultural and linguistic differences must also be taken into consideration. Therefore,it is important that the translator not only translates but also interprets the title in its new context, ensuring thatit is not misunderstood or misrepresented.2. Translation strategies for English movie titlesEnglish movie titles can be translated by using various translation strategies, depending on the specific circumstances and requirements. Common strategies includeliteral translation, transliteration, adaptation, and free translation. Each approach has its advantages and drawbacks, and the translator must carefully assess the situation and choose the best strategy.2.1 Literal TranslationLiteral translations directly translate the words and structure of the source language to the target language. This strategy is often used when the original title is already a well-known brand or an easily recognizable phrase. In such circumstances, translation of the title is less importantthan maintaining the connection and recognition of theoriginal linguistics elements. Examples include "Titanic", "Pulp Fiction," and "The Godfather," which have maintainedtheir names in virtually almost every language due to their cultural significance. The literal translation strategy is simple to process, and this reduces human error in interpreting the title. Moreover, it saves time and money, and where there are rights issues, a literal translation can be beneficial by creating continuity with the original language. However, in some cases, literal translation may be inappropriate, as it can be overly simplistic or have connotations that are not present in the original language. As a result, the strategy of literal translation can be more beneficial in some circumstances thanin others.2.2. TransliterationTransliteration involves the letter-for-letter transfer of a title from one language to another. Because thisstrategy tries to capture the sound of a word or phrase in a foreign language, it is often used for films that have a culturally significant title that is difficult to translate. For example, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (卧虎藏龙) uses the stroke count and sound of the Chinese sequence of characters in transliterating the title into English.Transliteration is a useful technique for preserving cultural elements within a foreign title, but it is not a complete solution for translation. The strategy of transliteration can often make the title difficult to pronounce in its new language, and this can lead to confusion and misunderstanding. Moreover, the sound effect of the original title in the source language will not carry overinto the target language in the same way. Finally, this method may not reflect the meaning of the film or fail to attract the target audience.2.3 AdaptingAdapting is a strategy in which the title is modified so that it is closer to the target culture's linguistic and cultural expectations. It relies heavily on localization-sensitive translation whereby translators are encouraged to work on recreating the semantic impact of the title in a new language. The constituent elements can be changed to reflect local customs and sound concepts, such as puns, idioms, metaphors, or even quotes. For example, "The Devil Wears Prada," in which the original title has been localized with a popular fashion magazine in the United States.Adapting is a preferable strategy where the target culture has significant cultural or linguistic differences from the source culture. It typically results in a better understanding of the title from the target audience and makes the title more appealing. However, there is a need for translators to consider how the adaptation will reflect the essence of the film while still maintaining the meaningfulness of the title. Changing the title too much could diminish its intended impact or reduce its appeal to the target audience.2.4 Free translationFree translation is a strategy in which the title and meaning are interpreted in such a way to achieve a similar effect in the target culture but without necessarilyretaining any of the original lexical content or structure. This strategy is often used for movies in which the title's original impact does not carry over into the target culture; "The Silence of the Lambs" is a prime example of a successful free translation, as it effectively conveys a sense of mystery and intrigue bordering on horror in Chinese.Free translation can effectively reinvent a title tosuit new cultural audiences. It allows translators to express the meaning behind the title in a way that resonates with the target audience. It also enables the translators to add a personal touch to the title to reflect an angle or perspective that appeals to the target audience. However, free translation is not always appropriate, particularly when the title is already well-known, and preserving its literal association must be maintained. Consequently, free translations are not ideal when the original name of the movie has a strong cultural appeal and recognition.3. ConclusionThis paper has examined the various strategies for translating English movie titles. The choice of which one to use will depend upon the movie's title's linguistic, cultural, and marketing goals, and the specific linguistic and cultural nuances of the target language and culture. A successfultitle must be relatable, culturally sensitive, easy to recall, and marketing-friendly. The translator must be aware of the purpose of the film, the market, and the target audience, as well as the culture in which the translated title will appear. Proper language and cultural research techniques must be employed to arrive at a robust title translation forsuccessful localization. Therefore, thorough research and profiling of the culture are crucial to the process of selecting the right title translation method.Overall, title translations should be respectful to the original name of the movie while also being localized to complement the target market's expectations and values. Atitle is a gateway to a film that can either attract or deter audiences. Hence, an effective title is an essential part ofa movie's marketing strategy and cultural appeal. A goodtitle reflects its meaning and essence and represents thefilm's overall performance, capturing the essence of themovie while maintaining authenticity and cultural relevance.。
浅析英语电影片名的翻译
- 214-校园英语 / 翻译研究浅析英语电影片名的翻译扬州高等职业技术学校基础教育部/邵静【Abstract 】As regard to the disunity in translated version, this thesis discusses and compares the different translation methods applied and the different features of the versions in the three regions respectively, and holds that the differences in socio-cultural context are the main reasons for the disunity. Proceeding from the features and functions of the film title, this thesis analyzes the main translation methods and strategies applied in the translation of English film title. The merits and limitations of each method are discussed. This thesis intends to argue that the translation of English film title should be under the audience-oriented principle through adopting translation methods properly.【Key words 】film title; translation; methods1. IntroductionWith the rapid economic and social progress, China has witnessed remarkable changes in its people ’s lives over recent years. People become more and more internationally-minded than ever before. Over the past decades of reform and opening up to the outside world, with China ’s more frequent cultural, economic and political exchange with foreign countries, foreign films and TV plays, particularly films in English language, have entered the China ’s market and held a very important position in Chinese people ’s recreational life.Film is one of the most influential mass media. As an audiovisual art, it follows and reflects people ’s life. It is a product of particular culture, but there ’re only very few people who can understand original English films. No matter how perfect the original works are, they have to be translated to reach the Chinese audience of vast size. So translating foreign audiovisual arts has become a significant activity in promoting cultural exchanges. With more and more foreign films introduced into the Chinese market, film translation has been attached increasing attention. However, film translation is far from being explored, especially in the translation of film title. The famous professor of film translation Qian Shaochang said, “People always pay less attention to film translation than literary translation. This is not suitable to the social role of film translations.”(钱绍昌,2000:61)Being a special and significant part of film translation, the translation of film title, however, is an area far from being explored. A good film with an unforgettable title translation would be worldly famous and can exert great influences upon generations of people. On the contrary, a poor translation may fail to attract audience, mislead the audience, but degrade the value and beauty of the original film on the whole. But the reality is that the translation of film title at the moment is in a state of disorderand disunity. Sometimes the audiences are completely confused by the translated version. Therefore, it is really high time to give enough attention to the field of the translation of English film title.2. Translation of Film Titles 2.1 TransliterationTransliteration is a method of translation. As a phenomenon of language, it deeply reflects the trace of cultural exchange. The early translation of Buddhist sutras has made full use of transliteration, even created many words. Now there are many transliteration emerging in large numbers, such as “E-mail ” (伊妹儿), “Hacker ” (黑客), “copy ” (拷贝).Transliteration is the product of cultural exchange; at the same time it provides an effective approach to cultural exchange. Movie is also a cultural phenomenon. So transliteration in the translation of English film title is effective, but few people use it.In particular, the name of person or place in the titles tends to be transliterated when the film is adopted from world famous or classical novel, and the novel ’s name is kept as film title, because such names have been familiar to and memorized by the audience as literature readers, and the success of the literary works can have a positive impact on the box office of such films. If they are translated in other ways, the moviegoers may take it as an ordinary film and might as well feel no interest in the film. Therefore, many films adapted from famous literary works just follow the transliterated names of the original, such as Romeo and Juliet is translated into “罗密欧与朱丽叶”, Tess into “苔丝” and Jane Eyre into “简爱”.2.2 Literal translationIn dealing with the translation of film title, we should be convinced that the work which should be done is to translate the titles rather re-entitle the movies. As titles usually aim to bring an image as well as connotation to the audience, literal translation is widely applied so long as it is not concerned with the very obstacles in terms of either language or culture.1) Named by character ’s nameSome films were named by character ’s name, especially some famous works, and then we can use literal translation. For example:Sister Carrie 嘉莉妹妹Dr. Edward 爱德华大夫2) Named by character ’s nicknameIt is interesting to translate literally those films. Just as Rain man (雨人), it has nothing to do with rain, it is vulgate of infantile autism. From this film title we can know the leading character is a man who is unsocial. The film Sleep-less in Seattle (西雅图未眠校园英语 / 翻译研究人) further prove it. Through literal translation we can know the theme of the title.3) Named by summarizationSome film titles summarize the films. Such as American Beauty, Dance with Wolves, Instinct, The Fifth Element, we usually translate them into “美国丽人”, “与狼共舞”, “本能”, “第五元素”.2.3 Free translationFree translation is used in film title translation mainly to convey the meaning and the spirit of the original title without sticking mechanically to the form. This method is most frequently applied when it is really impossible for the translator to use the methods previously discussed. Or, if it is literally translated, the version will be incomprehensible to the audience or highly ambiguous, dry and awkward.Take the following four titles as examples. If these titles are translated literally, most probably, the audience will still be confused by the clueless or awkward versions. Then the translation fails its functions as a film title. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest 飞越疯人院Terms of Endearment 母女情深Reds 烽火赤焰万里情(TW) Traffic 毒网2.4 The Combination of literal and free approachesThe combination of literal and free translation is a technique that frequently applied in the translation of film title. For some titles, literal translation or that with amplification may seem dull or awkward in the target language, or it still poses difficulties or barriers for the audience to understand the title, even running the risk of distorting the meaning and then misleading the audience. In such cases, the literal translation fails the functions that a title has, hence literal translation combined with free translation, or free translation is needed to fulfill the task. The strongpoint of this technique is that literal translation can deliver the literal meaning of the title at the surface level, and at the same time free translation expresses the implied meaning of the title in a depth. Such a combination can transmit the message to the most extent and add to the artistic appeal of the title. Most successful renderings of English films have fully demonstrated this.Take Shooting First as example. It is translated into “先发制人” instead of “率先开枪” or else. The phrase “先发制人” not only fully expresses the surface meaning of the original title, but also dig further into the implied meanings of the title, which is to “shoot first to take the control”.The translation of Blood and Sand “碧血黄沙” serves as another good example. It is a movie about a young man, Juan Gallardo, a poor boy who realizes his lifelong ambition to become the most famous matador in Spain. If the title is slavishly translated into “血与沙”, the version is 100 percent faithful to the original but tends to be unattractive. The translator does a good job by adding two color words, “碧” and “黄”, based on the content of the film. The Chinese characters “碧血” originate from Zhuang Zi (《庄子•外物》), a classic of traditional Chinese literature. The book recorded a story of Chang Hong (苌弘), a faithful and patriotic politician of the Kingdom of Zhou, who devoted his life to his country. It was said that three years after his death, Chang Hong’s blood turned into “green jade” (“碧玉”) (原文:“苌弘死于蜀,藏其血,三年而化为碧”——《庄子•外物》). Since then, people would use “碧血” to symbolize sacrifice of one’s blood or life for justice and honorable causes, or the strong loyalty one holds towards his career.More examples are listed as follows:Moonlight 披星戴月Who Shall Live and Who Shall Die 生杀大权Moonstruck 月色撩人Shakespeare In love 莎翁情史Scent Of A Woman 闻香识女人3. ConclusionWith the further expansion of China’s reform and opening up to the outside, the communication between China and other countries in the world become more and more frequent. There’re large quantities of English films being introduced into China. Although film translation has been developing quickly in the past two or three decades, most attention was given to the audiovisual translation. Being a special and significant part of film translation, the translation of film title is a far less explored field. Up to now, few translators have ever offered a practical principle for the translation of film title. As for the same original film title, the mainland version, Hong Kong version and Taiwan version coexist, causing confusion to the audience, even bringing barriers to communication across the straits. As we all know, the translation of film title is to call upon the audience to appreciate the film. As the audiences of different regions live in different cultures, it is natural that translators in the different regions will adopt different translation strategies in order to attract their target audience. The translator should bear the unique cultural features of the regions and provide the qualified translation which conforms to the local flavor.

直译的佳例还有:The Banquet《夜宴》、ThePatrio《爱国者》、Gladiator《⾓⽃⼠》Love At First Sigh 《⼀见钟情》、Brave Heart《勇敢的⼼》、CityofAngle 《天使之城》。
