New technologies, however, always are associate d with risks -- and these are also seen by laymen," says Christoph Böhmer t, first author of the recently published study and researcher of the Science Communication Group of KIT's Institute for Germ an Studies. "It is crucial to enable adequate communication b etween science and society, which does not only consider sci entific findings, but also concerns of the population." The stud y clearly showed that communication of risks may be complic ated sometimes. Information on efficient precautions was foun d to lead to an increased risk perception by the recipients of t he information. In their study, the researchers analyzed communication about a technology that has become indispensable in our life -- mobile communications and the electromagnetic fields (电磁场)on which it is based. All over the world, radiation protection au thorities, such as the German Federal Office for Radiation Pro tection, communicate the current state of research into risks o f electromagnetic fields as follows: Investigations made and al l findings obtained so far do not allow any conclusions to be d rawn with respect to mobile communications being a risk for h uman health. But, the experts continue, there still are knowled ge gaps as regards long-term impacts. Then, measures are recommended to reduce e xposure of the individual to electromagnetic fields. It had been known from previous studies already that informat ion on precautions may increase worries. It had been suspect ed that people conclude from the recommendation of precauti ons that there really is a risk. This effect was not confirmed by the recent study. The scientists rather attributed the increase d worries to a lack of knowledge about the propagation(传播) of electromagnetic fields.Within the framework of the study, the recommended precauti ons were submitted to 1717 Australians, together with one ofsix information brochures providing scientific background infor mation. When test persons were given not only the recommen dations, but also explained why observation of these tips stro ngly reduces their exposure to electromagnetic fields, worries increased. For example, scientists explained to the test perso ns that telephone conversations with a headset largely reduce exposure. When a mobile phone is located ten centimeters in stead of just one centimeter away from the ear, the electric po wer absorbed by the ear is about one hundredth of the initial v alue. Hence, the own mobile phone usually causes an exposu re that by far exceeds that of mobile communications stations that are generally referred to as "cellphone towers." While the scientists wanted to explain the effectiveness of precautions, t est persons mainly considered this information to be an indica tion of their mobile phone -- not the transmission towers -- being dangerous. As a result, they perceived increased risk potentials for telephone conversations with their mobile phone s."The study reveals that messages on precautions and informa tion are a double-edged sword in terms of subjective risk perception. Their use should be far better understood," Boehmert says.63. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage ?A. Adequate information on efficient precautions can relieve t he concerns of the publicB. Mobile communications definitely do harm to people’s heal th in the long run.C. Information about technologies and their risks may have u ndesired side effects.D. Observation of the precautions can help reduce the conce rns of the public66. According to the passage ,we can conclude that the best way to relieve the inappriate worries is to __________.A. enable the users to know better of science and technology .B. produce new electric products with a lower radiation valueC. provide the public with less information on effective precaut ionD. inform the public about the potential risks with more patien ce65. The word “precaution” ( first appears in paragraph 1) in bold letters has the closets meaning to _______-A. introductionB. intentionC. recommendationD. prevetion66. Which of the following might be the best title of the passa ge ?A. Science and Technology : A Double –edged SwordB. Technical Innovation : Worries and InformationC. Science and Technology: Security Tips for UsersD. Technical Innovations : Effectiveness of Precautions . Section CDirections: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be us ed only once. Note that there are two more sentences than yo u need.To Please Your Friends, Tell Them What They Already Knew The research emeraged out of some real-life observations shared by Gilbert and co-authors Gus Cooney and Timothy D. Wilson:“Conversation is the most common of all human social activiti es, and doing it well requires that we know what our conversa tion partners most want to hear.___67___”says psychological scientist Daniel T, Gilbert of Harvard University.“When our friends try to tell us about movies we’ve never see n or albums we’ve never heard, we usually find ourselves bor ed, confused, and underwhelmed. ___68___. And yet, as soon as it’s our turn to speak, we do exactlly the same thing to our friends – with exactly the same consequences. We wanted to understand why this happens.”Gilbert explains. The research ers decided to do this by conducting a series of experiments. In their first experiment, the researchers assigned participants to groups of three, with one person acting as the speaker and the other two acting as listeners. Speakers watched a video a nd then tried do describe it to the listeners. Some of the listen ers had seen the video the speakere was describing, and oth ers had not.___69___. When the speakers were done speaking, the listen ers rated them on these aspects. The results showed that spe akers’ predictions were exactly backwards. Speakers expecte d listeners to respond more positively to their stories when the listeners had not seen the video they were describing ___70_ __. Although speakers expected listeners to enjoy hearing about a novel experience more than a familiar one, it was actuall y the other way around.A second study showed that when asked to predict their own r eactions before hearing the story, listeners made the same mi stake that speakers did.Ⅳ.

Still few others regard this custom as a threat to the workers’work-life balance, which may negatively influence the level of productivity and efficiency.Employees at Amsterdam design studio Heldergroen won’t be putting in much overtime. Not in the office,at any rate. That’s because every day at6:00am,their desks, tables and other work surfaces, with their computers attached, are lifted to the ceiling by steel cables (绳索) normally used to move heavy props (道具) in theartrical productions. If you leave a half-eaten sandwich on your desk, you’re out of luck.“Once the chairs and other workplace paraphernalia are cleared away, the space is free for evening and weekend use as a dance floor, yoga studio…or anything else you can think of---the floor is actually yours” director Sander Veenendaal said.In a way,the office space itself is working overtime for Heldergroen, bringing about lots of publicity and carrying an enlightened (有启发的) message of career-life balance far and wide. “We think that doing activitied like this makes it easier for people to work here,” says Veenendaal. “You know when it is time to relax or do something else that inspires you”That sounds awesome. Their test is quicker than DNA analysis techniques currently used by law enforcementDNA testing is commonly used for identification because DNA is unique to each individual (个体). However, environmental and chemical processes can degrade DNA, limiting its usefulness over time.Protein(蛋白质)in hair,on the other hand,is more stable than DNA but can also have variations (变异体) that may be unique to the individual.“Our analysis process can be used universally,”says Ms.Huang.“One of our samples(样本) even included dyed hair and the test was 100 per cent accurate. The test was able distinguish East Asians, Caucasians and South Asians”Dr. Beauchemin says she has got in touch with law enforcement agencies about using the new technology. She is also planning to collect more hair samples and continue her research with a goal of finding where exactly in the world the hair sample is from, to look for more races and determine specific age.“We are in a very similar place with protein-based identification to where DNA testing was during the early days of its development,”said chemist Brad Hart.“This method will be a game-changer, and while we’ve made a lot of progress toward improving it, there are steps to go before this new technique is able to reach its full potential.”28. Their main problems is that they have a desperate need for rules and are unable to get along without them. This helps to explain why they have an international reputation for dressing in general very badly, but with specific areas of excellence, such as high-class men’s suits ceremonial costume, and innovative (革新的) street fashion. In other words, we English dress best when we are “ in uniform”You may be surprised that I am including “innovative street fashion ” in the ca tegory of uniform. Surely the parrot-haired punks (朋克摇滚乐迷) or the Vietorian vampire Goths are being original, not following rules? It’s true that they all look different and eccentric (奇特的) but in fact they all look eccentirc in exactly the same way. They are wearing a uniform. The only truly eccentric dresser in this country is the Queen, who pays no attention to fashion and continues to wear what she likes, a kind of 1950s fashion, with no regard for anyone else’s opinion. However, it is true that the styles invented by young E nglish people are much more eccentric than any other nation’s street fashion. We may not be individually eccentric, apart from the Queen, but we have a sort of collecive eccentricity, and we appreciat originality in dress even if we don’t individually have it.Another “rule of behavior I had discovered was that it is very important for the English not to take themselves too seriously, to be albe to laugh at themselves. However, it is wll known that mostteenagers tend to take themse lves a bit too seriously”Tye Goths,in their scaring black costume, certainly look as if they are taking themseveles seriously. But when I got into conversation with them,I discovered that they too had a sense of humor. I was once chatting to a Goth in the full vampire costome—with a white face, deep purple lipstick, and black parrot-hair.I saw he was also wearing a T-shirt with“Goth”.“Why are you wearing that?” I asked. “ It’s in case you don’t realize I’m a Goth, ” he answered, pretending to be Serious. We both burst out laughing.32. What can we know about the English people?A. They need rules to dress wellB. They are in need of uniformsC. They are creative in generalD. They lead the world trend.33. Who is individually eccentric in dressing?A. A high-calss manB. A parrot-haired punkC. The QueenD.The fashion innovator34. Which of the following can best describe the Goths?A.They dress badlyB. They dress in an amusing wayC. They are unable to laugh at the way they dressD. They are less fashionalbe than the other English people.35. What may be the best title for the text?A. How the English DressB. How the English Admire FashionC. Why the English Like UniformsD. Why the English Are Esscentric in Dress七选五Although people value intelligence---understanding,reasoning,the ability to learn—they also respect wisdom,or the knowledge and experience that they gain over a lifetime. In some ways, wisdom is like beauty: we value we desire, we know it when we see it, but it is nearly impossible to pin down such a nice quality. ___36____1. I lay on our living room floor excitedly watching the battle between the Brains: American Brain Boitano facing Brian Orser in Canada. Both of them had been world champions. Both of them deserved to win. As a Northern Californian, I was for my fellow countryman. He also grew up in Northern California. We’d skated on the same ice. Brain performed successfully. The champion! I jumped in the air when his score went up.But what happened next is what I’ll never forget. Brain sat in front of the camera, surrounded by a group of journalists. Brain was talking about his career and his medal, talking to the whole world. A terrible sinking feeling went through me. I could never be in the Olympics, I thought. I loved skating because I could express myself with my jumps and dances better than words. What if journalists asked me questions like they asked Brain? I’d freeze up like the ice beneath my skates! And yet, there was so much I would love to say, about my family and all the support they’d given me and abo ut following my dream of being a skating champion.I worked very hard the next few years -- on th e ice and especially off. After journalists talked to me and although my heart pounded every time I spoke to them, I got to know them. And they got to know me. Slowly I learned that the best approach was simply to be myself, to be honest and gracious and do my best, just like on the ice, to answer their questions. So when my big moment came four years after Brain’s, I was ready. Remember: when you do the thing you fear most, you put an end to fear.25. What information can we get from the first paragraph?A. The author lives a difficult life.B. The author comes from Canada.C. The author preferred Boitano to win.D. Orser won the gold medal.26.W hat did Brain’s press conference remind the author of ?A. Her fear of public speaking.B. Her pride in Brain’s victory.C. Her dream of becoming a world champion.D. Her hard training as an Olympic competitor.27.What does the underlined word “off ” possibly refer to?A. Challenges in school.B. Contact with reporters.C. Achievements in skating.D. Competitions with others28.What was the author ready to do according to the last paragraph?A. Do her best to win.B. Enter the Olympic final.C. Make friends with reporters.D. Talk to the press afterwards.CThere are two types of people in this world: those who regularly wash their office coffee cup. And those who only take it off their desk to cover up the coffee mark at the bottom with a fresh pour, driving away their shame with the reasoning that the heat must kill the bacteria or spine thing.Depending on which type of person you are, this will be either mildly annoying or more-than-m ildly exciting. As Heidi Mitchell wrote in a recent Wall Street Journal column, it’s fine to never wash your cup, as long as you’re not sharing it with anybody else. There are two warnings to that statement, infectious-disease expert Jeffrey Strake, a professor at Baylor College of Medic ine, told Mitchell: One, it only applies if you’re not sharing the cup with anybody else. And two , if you leave cream or sugar in your cup over the weekend, that can certainly cause mold(霉) to grow –in which case, wash it out.Other wise, though, there’s not really much to worry about. “If I went and cultured the average unwashed coffee cup, of course I would find bacteria.” Starke said. “But remember the vast majority came from the person who used the cup.” Even if you drink from it while sick, it’s pre tty hard to re-infect yourself with the same cup; most viruses don’t live long outside the body, which means that just letting your cup live in its own dirt may be a safer bet than the alternative; cleaning it with the disgusting sponge(海绵) in the office kitchen “Then sponge in the break room probably has the highest bacteria countof anything in the office.” Starke said. If the idea of not washing horrifies you , just stick the sponge in the microwave before using. Otherwise, though, feel free to continue your lazy ways without guilt.29. What does the passage intend to tell us?A. It is harmful to drink coffee with sugar.B. The hot water contributes to the bacteria growing.C. It’s okay not to wash your coffee cup regularly.D. Drinking from unwashed coffee cups causes diseases easily.30. What do we know from Stark’s words?A. The coffee cup in the office must be put in the microwave to clean.B. It’s easy to get infested if you often use the same unwashed cup.C. It’s a good way to grow bacteria in an unwashed cupD. The coffee cup shouldn’t be shared in the office.31. What does “your lazy ways” in the last paragraph refer to?A. Leaving your coffee cup unwashed.B. Sticking the sponge in the microwaveC. Using Paper cups only in the office.D. Cleaning your coffee cup with sponge.32. Where does the passage probably come form?A. A travel brochure.B. A science magazine.C. An official statement.D. An entertainment program.DWhy should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival.Perhapsthe best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.Nearly every succes sful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for.Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be found.Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later.Resources may be more than physical possessions.Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems.Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products of technological developments in the space industry! While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us.While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human being to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.33.Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph1?A.To express his doubts.B.To compare different ideas.C.To introduce points for discussion.D.To describe the conditions on Earth.34.What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph2?A.Humans are nature-born to do so.B.Humans have the tendency to fight.C.Humans may find new sources of food.D.Humans don't like to stay in the same place.35.Which of the statements can best sum up the passage?A.Space exploration has created many wonders.B.Space exploration provided the best value for money.C.Space exploration can benefit science and technology.D.Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
