Parents are creating an “I want it now” generation by indulgin g children’s every demand at Christmas,
say experts.Youngsters are becoming increasingly selfish, claim the education analysts.
Consumersavvy children are forcing their families into racking up huge debts and risk becoming spoilt and dissatisfied in th e future.
Behavioural consultant Chris Calland said,
“Parents are desperate to make Christmas into a magical fairy tale for their kid s.There’s nothing wrong with that as such.Th e problem arises when it means always giving into all our chil dren’s demands—
even if they are beyond our price range or not ageappropriate .”
Ms Calland,
who runs “Santa Says No” style sessions with colleague Nic ky Hutchinson, added,
“Many of us go into so much debt providing the gifts our childr en want that we spend the rest of the year paying off the bills. Yet so often the parcels we’ve carefully wrapped,
once opened,
are just pushed away because the very thing our little boy or g irl was once so desperate for,
they have now lost interest in.”
Ms Calland and Ms Hutchinson have drawn up a list of guideli nes to help parents manage their offspring’s Christmas lists th is year. They say that adults can actually improve their relation ships with their children by resisting “pester (纠缠) power”.Ms Calland said,

A man from Korea was telling a friend about his trip to the . Th e man had visited major businesses and investment compani es in New York City and .
“I studied English before I left home,”he said. “But I still was not sure that people were speaking Engl ish”.
His problem is easy to understand. Americans in business are like people who are in business anywhere. They have a lang uage of their own. Some of the business words and expressio
ns deal with the special areas of their work. Other expression s are borrowed from different kinds of work such as the theate r and movie industry.
One such saying is “Get your act together”.
When things go wrong in a business, an employer may get an gry. He may shout, “Stop making mistakes. Get your act toget her.”
Or, if the employer is calmer, he may say, “Let us get our act t ogether.” Either way, the meaning is the same. Getting your a ct together is getting organized. In business, it usually means to develop a calm and orderly plan of action.
It is difficult to tell exactly where the saying began. But it is pro bable that it was in the theater or movie industry. Perhaps one of the actors was nervous and made a lot of mistakes. The di rector may have said, “Calm down, now. Get your act togethe r.”
Word expert James Rogers says the expression was common by the late 1970s. Mister Rogers says the Guardian newspa per used it in 1978. The newspaper said a reform policy requir ed that the British government get its act together.
Now, this expression is heard often when officials of a compa ny meet. One company even called its yearly report “Getting Our Act Together”.
The Korean visitor was confused by another expression used by American business people. It is “Cut to the chase”.
He heard that expression when he attended an important mee ting of one company. One official was giving a very long repor t. It was not very interesting. In fact, some people at the meeti ng were falling asleep.
Finally, the president of the company said, “Cu t to the chase”.
Cut to the chase means to stop spending so much time on det ails or unimportant material, hurry and get to the good part. Naturally, this saying was started by people who make movie s. Hollywood movie producers believe that most Americans w ant to see action movies. Many of their movies show scenes i n which the actors chase each other in cars, or in airplanes or on foot.
Cut is the director's word for stop. The director means to stop filming, leave out some material, and get to the chase scene n ow.
So, if your employer tells you to cut to the chase, be sure to g et to the main point of your story quickly.

The attraction for students might at first seem obvious. Primar ily, there’s the convenience promised by courses on the Net: you can do the work, as they say, in your pajamas. But figure s indicate that the reduced effort results in a reduced enthusia sm to the course. Students themselves seem to understand th e weaknesses internal in the setup. In a survey conducted for Cornell, the DL division of , less than a third of the responden ts expected the quality of the online course to be as good as t he classroom course.
Clearly, from the schools’ perspective, there’s a lot of money t o be saved. The more students who enroll in a course but don’t come to campus, the more school saves o n keeping the lights on in the classrooms, paying doorkeepers , and maintaining parking lots. And, while there’s evidence tha t instructors must work harder to run a DL course for a variety of reasons, they won’t be paid any more, and might well be pa id less.
