Far out in the lake was a large wooden platform(平台) on which stood an improbably high diving board- a kind of wooden Eiffel Tower. It was, I’m sure, the county’s tallest wooden structure (结构) and no one had ever been known to jump from it. So it was quite a shock when our teacher, Mr. Milton, announced that he would dive off the high board that very afternoon.
Word of his questionable plan was already spreading through town as Mr. Milton swam out to the platform. He was just a tiny, stick figure when he got there but even from such a distance the high board seemed
almost to touch the clouds. Once at the top, he paced the enormously long board , then look some deep breaths and finally stood at the edge. He was going to do it.
Several hundred people had gathered at the shore to watch. Mr. Milton stood for quite along time ;then he raised his arms, took one bounce(弹跳) and launched himself into ;perfect dive. He fell with perfect style for what seemed minutes. The crowd fell silent. But about three quarters of he way down he seemed to have second thoughts and began suddenly to panic(惊慌),waving his arms and legs like someone having a bad dream. When he was perhaps thirty feet above the water, he gave up on waving and spread his arms and legs wide, obviously hoping that it would somehow slow his fall. It didn’t. He hit the water at over six hundred miles an hour, making birds fly out of their trees three miles away. I don’t think he entered the water at all. He just bounced off it, about fifteen feet back into the air. After that, he lay still on the surface , like an autumn leaf.
He was brought to shore by two passing fishermen in a rowboat and placed on an old blanket where he spent the rest of the afternoon. Occasionally he accepted a little water, but otherwise was too shocked to speak.
. . . It was the best day of my life.
4. W hat was Mr. Milton’s announcement?
A. He would construct the tallest wooden board.
B. He would not allow the students to dive.
C. He would jump from the wooden structure.
D. He would risk climbing Eiffel Tower.
5. W hat did the crowd think of Mr. Milton’s plan according to Paragraph 2 ?
A. Horrible.
B. Unbelievable.
C. Foolish.
D. Cheerful.
6. What does the author mainly talk about?
A. An unforgettable dive he made.
B. An adventure experience he saw.
C. How to dive safely.
D. Safety about adventurous trips.
7. Why did Mr. Milton spread his arms and legs wide thirty feet above the water?
A. To enjoy the free fall.
B. To fly like a bird.
C. To show his bravery.
D. To slow down.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. B 7. D

A complaint was received by the president of a major car company:“This is the fourth time I have written to you , and I don’t blame you for not answering me because must sound crazy, bu t it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of having ice-cream for dessert after dinner each night. Every night after we’ve eaten, the family votes on which flavor(味道)of ice-cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it. I recently purchased a new Pantsmobile from your company and since then my trips to the store have created a problem. You see, every time I buy vanilla(香草)ice-cream my car
won’t start. If I get any other kind of ice-cream , the car starts just fine. I want you to t now I’m serious about this question , no matter how silly it sounds: What is there about a Pantsmobile that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice-cream, and easy to start whenever I get any other kind?’The Pantsmobile company president understandably doubted about the letter, but he sent an engineer there anyway. The engineer had arranged to meet the man just after dinner time, so the two got into the car and drove to the grocery store. The man bought vanilla ice-cream that night and sure enough, after they came back to the car it wouldn’t start for several minutes. The engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, the man got chocolate. The car started right away. The second night , he got strawberry and again the car started right up. The third night he bought vanilla and the car failed to start.
There must be a reason why the man’s car wouldn’t start when he bought vanilla ice-cream. What was it? After doing more research into the case, the engineer eventually found out.The cause. Vanilla ice-cream was the most popular flavor and was on display in a little case near the express check out, while the other flavors were in the back of the store and took more time to choose and check out. This mattered because the man’s car was experiencing va por(蒸汽) lock, which is excess(过度的)heat boiling the fuel in the fuel line and the resulting air bubbles (气泡) blocking the flow of fuel until the car has enough time to cool. When the car was running, there was enough pressure to move the bubbles along , but not when the car was trying to start.

In one of the world’s most forbidding e nvironments, Polar bears spend !heir summers roaming (漫步) the Arctic on large pieces of floating ice. They drift(漂移) for hundreds of miles, finding mates, hunting for seals , and fatting themselves up for the winter. Without the floating ice , the world’s largest bears could not survive Yet at this moment , the polar bears’ Arctic habitat (栖息地) is melting away under it because of global warming.
Over the past three decades, more than a million square miles of floating ice has disappeared Scientists predict that, if the current rate of global warming continues, most, if not all, of the bears’ floating ice will be gone by 2100. As a result, the world’s polar bears could face global dying out by the end of this century.
Already, the ice on the southern edge of the polar bears’ habitat is melting about three weeks earlier than in the past. The loss of those key weeks leaves the bears less time to hunt, eat and store:p fat. Once the ice melts, the bears must fast for up to eight months on land until the floating ice returns. As a result of early melting, there has been a 14 percent decline in the Hudson Bay polar bear population over the past ten years- a fall clearly caused by global warming.
Besides, a growing number of polar bears may be drowning (溺水) as they are forced to swim more often, and for longer distances, looking for ice sheets(冰原). According to a report by the US Mincrals Management Service, researchers observed four dead polar bears floating 60miles off Alaska in September of2006 and said it was likely that many other bears swimming far off shore also drowned. Scientists have concluded that the worldwide population of about 20,000polar bears is likely to become smaller by more than 30 percent in the next 35 to 50 years alone.
12. What do polar bears usually do in summer?
A. Look for relatives.
B. Hunt for food.
C. Store crops up.
D. Make friends with seals.
13. What disaster will happen to polar bears by the end of this century according to the text?
A. Global drowning.
B. Global dying out.
C. Global hunger.
D. Global roaming.
14. What can be inferred from the underlined part in Paragraph 3?
A. The bears will have to stay hungry longer.
B. The bears will have to roam faster.
C. The bears will have to stay quieter on land.
D. The bears will have to face a faster fall of its population.
15. Why do polar bears have to swim more often and farther?
A. To search for food.
B. To build up bodies to survive.
C. To find places to land on.
D. To escape being hunted.
