We’ve all had cases where we’ve waited just a bit too long to pay an electric bill or speeding ticket. But one man, from California by reasonable assumption, who goes by “Dave”, recently took procrastination(拖延) one step further, by paying a parking ticket almost a half-century after it was given.
In December 2018, the Minersville Police Department in Pennsylvania received a letter in the mail. Whoever wrote the letter decided it was best to keep his name somewhat unknown, so he put the return address as “Wayward Road, Anytown California” under the name “Feeling guilty”.
When the officers opened the envelope, they found a brief letter, along with a $5 bill, and a parking ticket dating all the way back to 1974. The note read, “Dear PD, I’ve been carrying this ticket around for 40 plus years always intending to pay. Forgive me if I don’t give you my info. With respect, Dave.”
Even though the initial parking ticket was only for $2, “Dave” must have felt awfully guilty because he left 150 percent, or $3, in interest.
Michael Combs, the Police Chief of the Minersville Police Department, stated in an interview that the same ticket would cost about $20 if it were given today. Combs went on to share that the original ticket from
1974 was given to a vehicle that had an Ohio license plate.
Because there was no system for tracking tickets given to out-of-state cars back then, “Dave” could have gotten away with never paying the $2 fine. But apparently, guilt got the best of him, and he decided to finally cough up the money more than 40 years past its due date.
24. How much do we know about “Dave”?
A. He lives in Wayward Road, Anytown California.
B. His car probably came from Ohio at that time.
C. The police are trying to find out more about him.
D. “Dave” is of course the man’s real name indeed.
25. Why didn’t “Dave” pay for the parking ticket until recently?
A. He completely forgot about it in the past 44 years.
B. He didn’t find it until almost half a century later.
C. He didn’t pay for it just because of procrastination.
D. He failed to find out who he should pay the money to.
26. What drove “Dave” to pay for the parking ticket at last?
A. A strong sense of guilt.
B. Fear of being tracked by the police.
C. Worry about being fined more.
D. Sudden change of his financial situation.
7. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Police Chief of the Minersville Police Department Shares a Story
B. Parking Ticket Carried Around for Almost Half a Century from Ohio
C. Unusual Letter Comes from Wayward Road, Anytown California
D. Mysterious Procrastinator Finally Pays 44-Year-Old Parking Ticket

Until the 1990s coffee was rarely served in China except at luxury hotels aimed at foreigners. When Starbucks opened its first outlet there in 1999, it was far from clear that the country’s avid tea-drinkers would take to such a different—and usually more costly—source of caffeine. Starbucks tried to attract customers unused to coffee’s bitter taste by promoting milk and sugar-heavy concoctions(调和) such as Frappuccinos.
But coffee has become fashionable among the middle class in China. Starbucks now has about 3,800 outlets in China—more than in any other country outside America. Statista, a business-intelligence portal(门户网站), says the roast coffee market in China is growing by more than 10% every year. Starbucks and its rivals see big opportunities for expanding there.
So too, however, do home-grown competitors. A major new presence is Luckin Coffee, Beijing-based chain. Since its founding less than two years ago, it has opened more than 2,300 outlets. On May 17th Luckin’s initial public offering on the Nasdaq stockmarket raised more than $570m, giving it a value of about $4bn.
Luckin’s remarkable growth is sign of change. No longer do Chinese consumers see coffee as such a luxury. Most of Luckin’s outlets are merely kiosks where busy white-collar workers pick up their drinks, having ordered them online. Super-fast delivery can also be arranged through the company’s app. Independent coffee shops are springing up. The growth is striking given the country’s reputation for its tea-drinking culture where many residents like to relax in teahouses sipping tea served gracefully.
But the two markets are different. The teahouses tend to cater to older people who like to spend long hours playing mahjong and gossiping. At the coffee shops it is rare to see anyone over 40. Young people use them for socialising, but much of their interaction is online-sharing photos of their drinks and of the coffee-making equipment. An option on the Chinese rating app Dianping allows users to search for wanghong(“internet viral”) coffee houses: ones with particularly photogenic decor(照片装饰) Where better to sip and We Chat?
28. How did Starbucks try to appeal to Chinese consumers?
A. By reducing the price slightly.
B. By introducing the benefits of coffee.
C. By making coffee taste not so bitter.
D. By promoting its products effectively.
29. What does Luckin Coffee’s growth suggest?
A. People tend to like coffee’s bitter taste.
B. People’s views on coffee-drinking have changed.
C. People in China can afford coffee now.
D. Tea is no longer part of Chinese culture.
30. What does the underlined word “kiosks” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Places where people can drink beer.
B. Restaurants where food can be taken away.
C. Shops aimed at people who like drinking coffee.
D. Small shops or stores where newspapers and drinks are sold.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Coffee is taking off in China.
B. Tea-drinking is not popular.
C. Coffee or tea, which do you prefer?
D. Coffee has become people’s favorite in China.
D
Many of us think, wrongly, that the moon doesn’t change. For example, the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ruoxu once wrote that “Generations have come and passed away; From year to year the moons took alike, old and new.”
However, a new study published in the journal Nature Geoscience shows that the moon is in fact slowly shrinking over time. For the study, a group of US scientists examined and analyzed thousands of photographs taken by the NASA orbiter Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera(月球勘测轨道飞行器照相机). They found that there were lots of faults(断层) on the surface of the moon. These faults were formed by recent movement on the moon.
According to NASA, the moon is made up of pieces of rocks with a hot core(核). The moon continued to expand as it was born. But in this process, it released energy and cooled down. Then it began to shrink, in a way comparable to the shrinking of a grape into a raisin(葡萄干). Over the past several hundred million years, it has become 46 meters “skinnier”. But due to its hard and rocky crust(外壳), the moon’s surface continues to push up, “Some of these quakes can be fairly strong around five on the Richter scale(里氏震级),” said Thomas Watters, a senior scientist at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in the US.
But does that mean the moon is a dangerous place that human shouldn’t try to explore and live on in the future? Maybe not, reported the Telegraph, “This isn’t anything to worry about. The moon may be shrinking, but not by much. It’s not going anywhere,” Watters comforted us.
The new discovery proves that the idea that the moon is a dead, boring place is wrong. “We have been to the moon and we’ve done some great science, but there is still a lot we don’t know. The moon is shrinking—we didn’t really realize that until recently. It’s a much more active and interesting place than we thought and we should explore that,” NASA scientist Nathan Williams said.
32. Which point of view about the moon may the writer agree to?
A. It stays the same as before.
B. It is becoming lightly smaller.
C. It is getting older and older.
D. It has passed away.
33. What can we learn about the moon from the third paragraph?
A. It has become 46 meters fatter due to expanding.
B. It has changed from a grape into a raisin in recent years.
C. It quakes even at seven on the Richter scale.
D. It has a hot core and releases energy during expanding.
34. Who thinks that we needn’t worry about the moon?
A. Zhang Ruoxu.
B. Thomas Watters.
C. Nathan Williams.
D. The journalist.
35. What does Nathan Williams think of the moon?
A. It is a dead and boring place.
B. It has lots of faults on the surface.
C. It is valuable to do more science.
D. It isn’t a place where we can live.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Delayed onset(开始) muscle soreness is a common result of physical activities that stress the muscle tissue beyond what it is accustomed to. Performing any type of physical activity, including working out, can cause delayed onset muscle soreness. 36
Vary your exercise routine. 37 Mix up your physical activities by doing both cardio(心脏的)and weight training.
Warm up and cool down for 5-10 minutes each. Do a slower version of your exercise before and afterwards. Warming up helps to warm your muscles in preparation. 38
Stop before your body is physically overtaxed(使超负荷) or in pain. If you are doing a physical activity and start to feel pain, then it’s time to take a break or stop entirely for the day.
39 Signals of a worn-out muscle system can include sharp pains, cramps(抽筋), or even loss of muscle power.
40 A foam(泡沫) roller is exactly what it sounds like, a small tube-shaped piece of foam. Sit on an exercise mat on the floor and position the roller to one side of your sore muscles. Apply gentle pressure as you roll the foam over your muscles. Repeat this rolling motion until you feel your muscles begin to release.
A. Apply a foam roller to your sore muscles for 5-10 minutes.
B. Cooling down allows your body temperature to return to resting levels.
C. It’s also important to build up any training plan slowly to avoid overtaxing your body early on.
D. If you perform the same action day after day, then your muscles will get overly tired, instead of strengthening.
E. Most of the soreness should only last for 24-72 hours, but there are ways to avoid the delayed onset muscle soreness.
F. Before running or playing an intensive sport, the athletes might slowly jog to warm their muscles and increase their heart rate.
G. However, delayed onset muscle soreness isn’t necessarily as bad as it sounds, for it’s a sign that your body is on the move to improvements in strength.

We’ve all turned to sad music to make us feel 61 (good)at some point in our lives, but why does doubling down on the sadness help drag us out of the mire(泥沼)?
A new study sheds light on what’s going on inside our brains 62 we match our music to our feelings. It looks like sad music can be enjoyable—rather than 63 (simple) depressing—because it triggers positive memories that can help to lift our mood. Psychologist Adrian North from Curtin University in Australia says there 64 (be)two groups of possible 65 (explain) for why we enjoy listening to sad music like this: one from social psychology, and one from cognitive neuroscience(认知神经学).
In terms of social psychology, one way of 66 (think) about this is that we feel much better about 67 (we) if we focus on someone who’s doing even worse, a process known as downward social comparison. Everything’s going to be okay, because this person68 (have) an even worse day than you are.
Another theory from social psychology is that people like to listen69 music that mirrors the tone of their current life circumstances—the songs act as 70 sort of tuning fork(音叉) for our own situations and they resonate(共鸣) with us.
