A
I started working with my hands at a young age. The youngest of five brothers, I took on the role as a “maintenance (维修) man” at an early age for our family’s small grocery store. Often my dad wouldn’t give me a clear idea of how something shouldbe done, so I just had to figure it out by researching or through trial and error.
Fast forward to 2016 and those problem-solving skills would become the focus of Tippecanoe High School’s Homebuilding class. I knew I wanted to teach the students skills that went beyond just being able to hammer nails or cut pieces of two-by-fours. The problem was that we didn’t have the resources at the time to do much else. The idea of attracting some type of funding seemed very important. Designing, building and selling a tiny house on wheels seemed like the perfect project to accomplishthe task. I reached out to a number of local businesses and most of them responded with the greatest support for what x k w we were doing.
This year we added a new element to the program. Through one of our partners, we were able to connect with the nonprofit Veteran’s Ananda Incorporated. Students in the Homebuilding class are leading the design and production of micro houses to be donated to this organization. The new partnership gives the students another focus to consider when designing and building the houses.
There has been no shortage of students since our first year. Three years ago we had 41 students, the next 191, and this year it was limited to just over 160 students so we could have a safe and manageable classroom environment. The number of girls taking the class has risen steadily over the last few years as well. This class offers something for everyone and the skills are universal.
1. How can we describe the young author?
A. He opened a small grocery store.
B. He did a lot of research in the lab.
C. He enjoyed doing hands-on activities.
D. He learnt about maintenance from his father.
2. What do the underlined words “the task” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Getting some financial support.
B. Selling a tiny house on wheels.
C. Reaching out to many local businesses.
D. Offering the students some problem-solving skills.
3. What can be inferred about the Homebuilding class from the last paragraph?
A. Its size needs increasing.
B. Itis popular with the students.
C. It has caused some safety concerns.
D. Its classroom environment is hard to manage.
B
Once small farmers in Masii, a remote village in Kenya, have picked their crops, all they can do is wait until a buyer trucks through. The system works fairly well for beans and corn, but mangoes-the area’s other main crop-spoil (腐烂) more quickly. If the trader is late, they rot.
However, a simple coating could change that. A company, SmartTech, has created a product that doubles the shelf life of fresh produce, enabling farmers to access far-off, larger markets. More time forfresh produce on grocers’ shelves also means less food waste-a $2.6 trillion problem, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
James Rogers, CEO of SmartTech, wanted to solve the problem for food much in the same way that oxide barriers preventing rust (锈) have achieved for steel. Fortunately, researchers have found when plants made the jump from water to land, they developed cutin(蜡质), a barrier which is made of fatty acids that link together to form a seal around the plant, helping keep water in.
The cutin was such a grand strategy that today you’ll still find it across the plant kingdom. SmartTech discovered through researches that an orange can last longer than a strawberry not so much because of the thickness of its skin, but because of the difference in the arrangement of those cutin molecules (分子)on the surface. After extensive trials, Rogers and his team developed a natural and tasteless protective coating from plant material-stems, leaves and skins. The product extends the sweet spot between ripening and rot. And best of all, the treated produce doesn’t require refrigeration.
“SmartTech has huge potential to turn poor farmers in Africa into commercial farmers,” says Rogers. “That means more money in pockets, and more food in stomachs.” But whether the company can cost-effectively reach small farmers in far-off areas still remains a challenge.
4. The author mentions the small farmers in Kenya to ________.
A. stress their need for preserving produce
B. show their challenge in harvesting crops
C. express their wish to reach larger markets
D. evaluate their loss caused by slow transport
5. What can we learn about SmartTech’s product?
A. It is financially supported by FAO.
B. It is intended to replace refrigeration.
C. It is designed to thicken produce’s skin.
D. It is based on plants’own defence system.
6. What will James Rogers probably focus on next?
A. How to expand farms.
B. How to earn more money.
C. How to produce more tasty food.
D. How to profit farmers in remote area.
7. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. promote a product
B. present a technology
C. advertise SmartTech
D. introduce James Rogers
C
Tofight for the conservation of forest ecosystem, several ecologists including Daniel Janzen convinced Del Oro, an orange juice producer, to donate part of their forestland to a national park. In return, Del Oro was allowed to throw large amounts of waste in the form of orangepeels(皮) on a 3-hectare piece of land within the national park at no cost. Dealing with tons of leftover peels usually involved burning them or paying to have them poured into a landfill, so the proposal was very attractive.
But a year later, another juice company challenged the deal in court, arguing that their competitor was "polluting a national park". They ended up winning, and the deal between Del Oro and the national park fell through.
Then in 2013, while discussing possible research avenues(途径,手段)with Timothy Treuer, Daniel Janzen mentioned the orange story. Feeling interested, Treuer decided to stop by that piece of land that had been covered with fruit waste 15 years earlier. What he found shocked him.
"While I would walk over exposed rock and dead grass in the nearby fields, I'd have to climb through undergrowth and cut paths through walls ofvines(藤) in the orange peel site itself," said Timothy Treuer.
Treuer and his team spent months picking upsamples(样品), analyzing and comparing them. They found great differences between the areas covered with orange peels and those that were not. The area withorange waste had richer soil.
The effect that the orange peels had on the land is probably not that surprising to people familiar withcomposting(施肥), but what is really shocking is that a judge actually thought the waste of orange "mined" a national parkand stopped it from going forward. Now that Timothy Treuer's study has received worldwide attention, this type of "ruining" is being seriously considered as a way of bringing forests back to life.
8. What did Del Oro usually do with orange peels?
A. Add them to fuel.
B. Feed them to animals.
C. Burn or bury them.
D. Make them into cakes.
9. What can we know about the deal between Del Oro and the national park?
A. It lasted 15 years.
B. It was signed by Treuer.
C. It was made in about 1998.
D. It was broken by Del Oro.
10. What was Treuer's finding?
A. Orange peels contain much fibre.
B. Orange peels can make soil richer.
C. Orange peels rot away in a short time.
D. Orange waste ruined the national park.
11. What is the author's attitude toward the judge mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. Disapproving.
B. Positive.
C. Worried.
D. Admirable.
D
Teenagers from low-income families in particular are more likely than their middle-class peers(同龄人)to do less well in schoolwork and to drop out of school. Studies have shown, however, that a positive attitude towards schoolwork and the support and encouragement from their parents can help at-risk youngsters to overcome the economic barriersand lack of resources they face. Most of the evidence about the effects of parental involvement (参与)comes from research on mothers. Little is known, however, about how teenagers experience their fathers’ warmth and the beliefs and behavior that are most affected by it.
This new study is part of a large one focusing on low-income families conducted in four middle schools in the southwestern United States. Researchers asked 183 sixth-graders about how optimistic and motivated they were about their school work, and how they experienced their fathers' warmth. The students' maths and language arts grades were also gained. The research team took into account the influence that mothers have on their children’s well-being in their analyses.
Their findings show how fathers can support their teenagers in ways that result in greater optimism and higher achievement at school. “Low-income fathers affect their teenagers’ beliefs about themselves and their future, and these beliefs influence their achievement by increasing their determination to complete school tasks, “says Dr, Marie-Anne.
These positive effects extend to both sons and daughters, although in different ways. Experiencing their fathers’ warmth first influences daughters’sense of optimism, and thenspills overinto their feeling more determined and certain about their academic abilities. This in turn leads to better maths grades. There is a more direct link between their fathers, love and boys' belief in their ability to succeed in academy.
12. What is more likely to happen to teenagers from low-income families?
A. They will be more determined to struggle.
B. They will have fewer happy things to share.
C. They will fail in their studies and quit school.
D. They will receive less love from their parents.
13. How is the new research different from the previous ones?
A. It only researches families in the north of America.
B. It only studies low-education families in the world.
C. It combines questionnaire data and students, grades.
D. It mainly focuses on the effects of fathers' involvement.
14. What can we know about fathers' warmth?
A. It is less effective than that of mothers.
B. It affects girls and boys in different ways.
C. It mainly applies to girls rather than boys.
D. It has a more direct effect on girls thanon boys.
15. Which of the following best explains "spills over" underlined in the last paragraph?
A. Spreads.
B. Changes.
C. Bursts.
D. Checks.

Miss Robinson was the governess (家庭教师) of Mrs. Livingstone's daughters. She lived in the house like a servant. But she was intelligent and well-educated.
One evening, Mrs. Livingstone invited some friends to dinner. She asked fourteen people but one of the guests was unable to come. Thirteen is an unlucky number so she invited Miss Robinson. Miss Robinson hurried to the jewelry shop to get her repaired string of beads for the dinner party. One of the guests was Count Borselli who knew everything about pearls and diamonds. A young lady at dinner called Miss Lyngate was wearing a string of pearls. She was very proud of her pearls and she asked Count Borselli to look at them.
"They're quite nice pearls, "said the Count.
Miss Lyngate had her nose high up in the air, announcing they cost eight thousand pounds.
"Yes, that's the correct price," said Count Borselli in an ordinary voice. And then, he pointed to the pearls on Miss Robinson's neck, "That is a very nice string of pearls." Miss Lyngate's face flushed with anger. She didn't think a governess could wear a valuable string of pearls.
"That string of pearls is worth more than fifty thousand pounds," added the Count,
Miss Lyngate did not believe Count Borselli. He was mistaken. "Miss Robinson," She said in a loud voice. "Are you wearing a very valuable string of pearls?"
All ears were cocked for Miss Robinson's reply. "1 paid Fifteen shillings for these beads, "said Miss Robinson quietly. Miss Lyngate laughed, with a proud expression on her face.
Now everyone in the room was in whisper. A governess with a string of pearls worth fifty thousand pounds? That was not possible. A woman with fifty thousand pounds was a very rich woman.
"But I bought these beads for fifteen shillings," said Miss Robinson again.
"I do not make mistakes," said the Count quietly. "I know the value of pearls."
"A thief? Stolen pearls?" screamed Mrs. Livingstone, trembling with anger.
"There must be something wrong." Miss Robinson thought.
