100802102 Herbert 高孝Effects of Britain culture on ChinaAccompanying The Economic Globalization, the “Global Village”is not a fresh word at all .In fact, it is no doubt that any counties’development would impact or affect by the cultures from other countries .Of course, just like every coin has two sides, it has the positive aspects and the negative aspects .No matter in the history or in today’s life ,Britain culture has played a important role in China’s development.First, let us talk about the positive aspects.1.Industrial Revolution of England raised the curtain on modernization of the China.The industrial revolution of England have a great impact on China .Britain had waging two opium war against China in history, and China became its market of goods dumping and the place of rawmaterials .Meanwhile, China had been pushed into the market of capitalism of world. Anyway, according to this , precursor of China has appeared , they learn the new science and technology ,they abandon the old shacklesand begin to accept the west thought and opinion. What’s more, at the same time, China’s natural economy had disintegrated, and the national capitalism had appeared too. In other words, after the opium war, because of the input of the scrim, muslin and the great purchase of the Agricultural Byproduct ,China’s commodity economy could development rapidly.2.Britain culture brought in new ideological trend to China ,and brought abundant life to Chinese people. a.Aspect of thought :in the old China, people’idea have been limited by the feudal thought,which lead to the stricture horizon of people ,and most important, most of Chinese people do not know well about the world .But after the opium war, people all start to learn the advanced opinion of Britain and at the same time, China appeared a lot of overseas students, Many famous experts and celebrated scholars in Chinese modern history came from these students, they also had given great contribution to China’development.b.About the life style :After the opium war, As the appeared of the western culture, the cultural contracture and living way in China is also having a great change . Forexample, Western Restaurant, photo studio,theater, coffee shop and so on ,appeared in China’street, and more and more people accept these new things even like them very much . Never the less, people’clothes were more colorful than before, There are different styles to choose; About the traffic, bicycle and car came to people’svision-China’s last emperor Puyi also have a bicycle, once upon a time he ride it in the Forbidden city.3.Effects of British literature on China’writer.a. First, English Romantic poetry have great effect on Chinese modern poetry.(take examples of Hsu Chih-mo ) Hsu Chih-mo is a famous Chinese poet. His perception has been influenced by the master of the British poet, like William Wordsworth, Shelley, John Keats and so on. What is more, his works’conception, theme, structure, and technique, all effected by British literature in some ways .That is why xu’poem not only have the sentiment of romantic but also mysterious of symbolize, the song of optimistic, the worship of the death, the lively in the move, and the solemn blend into the quiet. We can say that just because of the British literature made a overall Hsu Chih-mo, and his graceful poem.b. British literature and Lao She-a famous Chinese writer.Lao She, “People’s Artiest”in China. He went to Britain when he was 27 years old. At that moment, he is just begin his creation and drift in the foreign land, and he effected by Joseph Conrad and William Thackeray, reference in them’s advantage of creation, and most of them are reflect in the creation style and tendency of creation. Most importantly, finally he formed his own writing style.In his writing style, just like Charles Dickens, he look upon the things with the humorous vision; and when it turn to the tendency of his writing , he effected by the humanitarianism’tender feelings which takes form Charles Dickens. In his works, he expressed his worried about our nation and show loving care for the Bottom people, which include carter, orphan, artist, prostitute and so on. It is him that fused the west culture and the traditional culture of China, and finally he became a master in literature and admired by all over the world.A s for the negative aspects, I Also got three points.1. What is known to us all is that the British Industrial Revolution makes a big difference all over the world, especially in British and European and American continent, and China is one of them , too. It brings us so many advantages but also some negative effects.a. China descends to a colony of Britain, and Britain got benefit from China, they took away many precious treasures from The Forbidden City and The Mogao Grottoes. In addition, they build railways and take away China’s resource. After the opium war, Britain forced Qing government to sign a series of unequal treaty and because of opium smoking, Chinese army loss fighting capacity. All this aspects caused China’s impoverished and backward, thus caused laggard economy of China, too.b. The industrial revolution caused series problems which include traffic, housing, environmental pollution and so on. On account of unlimited development of industry, the problem of resource waste and dried up can not be ignore any more. In a word, the development of China’s industrialization and science and technology bring about not only the material civilization but also the pollution of environment and social inequality. More important, therelationship between human and nature deteriorated day by day. In China , environment and resource is big problem in the nation’s development.c. Affected by the industrial revolution in Britain, whole advocated the profit blindly. In some ways, what people really concerned is the reasonable production, and the more the wealth accumulated, the larger gap between the poor and the rich. In addition, workers pay a lot but did not got the enough salary which they should gain. What is more, the prevalent of mammonism lead to a series of problems such as the trust crisis among people, in other words, whole society lack of the principle of humanistic concern.2.The criminal opium war.The criminal smuggle of opium had bad influence on the Qing government’s financial which caused by the loss of silver, and after Britain occupied Hang Kang, China was not a independent country anymore, the territorial sovereignty and the judicial sovereignty had been broke. The Britain forced open the doors to trade with gunboats, an enfeebled China was carved up by western powers inwhat China calls its “century of humiliation”.In addition, by 1860, China had suffered two humiliating defeats in the opium wars, culminating in British and French troops looting and burning the Old Summer Palace. Until now, the old summer palace is still a stark reminder about the arrogance of the colonial impulse, just like Victor Hugo said: “we Europeans are the civilised ones and for us the Chinese are barbarians. This is what civilisation has done to barbarism.”3.The effect of British popular culture on the China.Many Chinese people worship all things from foreign, those people are exceptionally friendly towards foreigners. English culture element can be seen everywhere, for example, Manchester United and Beckham, Sherlock Holmes and Mr Bean, Beatles and Westlife and so on. These cultures have been a part of our life, even change or assimilated our social and culture, it also fade away our sense of traditional culture. In recent years, more and more Chinese people worship foreign things and be interested in the foreign festival, like Saint Valentine’s Day, April Fools’Day, and Christmas Day, it means that Chinesetraditional festival facing the challenge from foreign culture.As far as I’m concerned, compared with New Year’s Day, Chinese students pay more attention to the Christmas Day, although it is few days between the two festivals.In fact, I think cultural exchange is by no means a process of losing one’s own culture to foreign culture, but a process of enriching each other’s national cultures.。
