There are low-qualityschools just as there are low-quality businesses. We have no duty to save them simplybecause they exist. But many promising institutions that deserve to continue are threatened. Theyare doing a fine job educationally, but they are caught in a financial squeeze, withno way to reduce rising cost or increase income significantly. Raising tuitiondoesn’t bring in more income, for each time tuition goes up, the enrollment goesdown, or the amount that must be given away in student aid goes up. Schools are badbusinesses, whether public or private, not usually because of mismanagement but because of the nature of the enterprise. They lose money on every customer, and they can go bankrupt either from too few students or too many students. Even a very good college is a very bad business. It is such colleges, promising but threatened, that I worry about. Low enrollment is not their chief problem. Even with full enrollment, they may go under. Efforts to save them, and preferably to keep them private, are a national necessity. There is no basis for arguing that private schools are inherently (固有地) better than public schools. There are many examples to the contrary. Anyone can name state universities and colleges that rank as the finest in the nation and the world. It is now inevitable that public institutions will be dominant, and therefore diversity is a national necessity. Diversity in the way we support schools tends to give us a healthy diversity in the forms of education. In an imperfect society such as ours, uniformity of education throughout the nation could be dangerous. In an imperfect society, diversity is a positive good. Supporters of public higher education know the importance of sustaining private higher education.36. According to the author’s opinion schools are bad businesses because of ________.A. mismanagementB. too few studentsC. too many studentsD. the nature of schools37. The author used the phrase “go under” (Sentence 3, Para. 3) to mean ________.A. get into difficultiesB. have low enrollmentC. have low tuitionD. bring in more money38. We can reasonably conclude from this passage that the author made an appeal tothe public in order to support _________.A. public institutionsB. private schoolsC. uniformity of educationD. high quality of education39. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. High-quality private schools deserve to be saved.B. If the tuition is raised, the enrollment goes down.C. There are many cases to show that public schools are better than private schools.D. Private schools have more money than public schools.40. Which of the following ways could possibly save private schools?A. Raising tuition.B. Full enrollment.C. National awareness and support.D. Reduction of rising cost.BIs Your Diet Destroying the Environment?A vegetarian diet is often praised for its health benefits. Studies have shown that vegetarians usually have lower levels of heart disease and a lower risk ofdiabetes than people who eat meat. What most people are less aware of, however, are the effects that a vegetarian diet can have on the environment.Researchers from the Union of Concerned Scientists in the US recently studied how consumer behavior affects the environment. The study showed that meat consumption is one of the main ways that humans can damage the environment, second only to the use of motor vehicle. Then, how can eating meat have a negative effect on the environment? For a start, all farm animals such as cows, pigs, and sheep give off methane(沼气)gas by expelling (排出)wind from their bodies. One cow can produce up to 60 liters of methane each day. Methane gas is the second most common greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. Many environmental experts now believe that it is more responsible for global warming than carbon dioxide. It is estimated that 25% of all methane released into the atmosphere comes from farm animals.Another way that meat production affects the environment is through the use of water and land. 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of beef, whereas 20 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of wheat. One acre of farmland used for crop production can produce 40,000 pounds of potatoes, 30,000 pounds of carrots, or 50,000 pounds of tomatoes. Many people now see the benefits of switching to a vegetarian diet, not just for health reasons, but also because it plays a vital role in protecting the environment. However, some nutritionists advise against switching to a totally strict vegetarian, or vegan diet. They believe a vegan diet, which excludes all products from animal sources, such as cheese, eggs, and milk, can be short of many necessary vitamins and minerals our bodies need.Today, many people know it’s important to take better care of their bodies and to use the earth’s resources more efficiently. As this understanding spreads, more people may realize that to help the environment and for the human race to survive, more of us will need to become vegetarians.41. The underlined word “it” in Para.3 refers t o ________.A. methane gasB. carbon dioxideC. expelling windD. greenhouse gas42. Many figures are used in Para.4 to show ________.A. growing tomatoes has the highest productionB. crop production is better than meat productionC. meat production consumes too much water and landD. farm animals are the main producer of the methane gas43. What message does the passage want to convey?A. Our diet is destroying the surroundings.B. Raising farm animals affects the environment.C. A vegetarian diet helps to protect the environment.D. More and more people are becoming strict vegetarians.CMrs. Squirrel and I Negotiated TermsI was sitting in the room reading when I heard a loud noise. To defend my home from break-in, I picked up my defense weapon--- a broom and went out. There on the roof of my porch(门廊), I saw a grey fluffy squirrel. I drove her away with the broom, but the next day I heard her again.I searched squirrels on the net and found because their teeth keep growing, they have to constantly chew on things to shorten their teeth. This was disturbing so I asked my husband to call in some wildlife control people. On Monday morning two men showed up, with guns in their hands. I pointed uneasily to the hole in my porch roof. They held up their guns. Suddenly I saw in my mind the baby nursery inside. I stopped them and confirmed that they wouldn’t harm her. They hesitated, but finally put down their guns. Then they brought out a bottle of deodorizer(除臭剂)and sprayed it into the squirrel’s home. They told me she would not like the smell and would leave. There was no sign of Mrs. Squirrel, so they blocked the hole, took my cheque for $250 and left.Shortly after they left, Mrs. Squirrel returned from her shopping trip. She was mad at beingdriven out and began feverishly clawing at the porch roof. In order to stop the destruction of myhome, I drove her away with the broom again. Each day thereafter, Mrs. Squirrel continued her attack on my possession. I then cal led the company to report that “SHE’S BAAAAAACK…” The receptionist said that if Mrs. Squirrel had managed to find another way into my porch roof, it would be a new charge. I replied I couldn’t continue contributing my husband’s hard-earned income to their silly wildlife experts and hang up.I went to the porch and banged on the roof. Mrs. Squirrel came out and glared at me. We negotiated some terms, came to an agreeable arrangement and went back into our respective homes. All is quiet these days, although large quantities of materials have been removed from my garage wall and my daughter claims that some of her doll-house furniture has disappeared. I still hope that Mrs. Squirrel would leave, but I will wait until it is warmer and hopefully until after the birth of the little ones.44. What did the author think of the squirrel at first?A. Troublesome.B. Dangerous.C. Interesting.D. Clever.45. Why didn’t the author ask the wildlife control people to come again?A. She worried about the safety of the squirrel.B. She thought the company charged too much.C. She decided to drive away the squirrel herself.D. She doubted the ability of the wildlife control people.46. What can we learn from the passage?A. Getting rid of the squirrel needs patience.B. The squirrel has destroyed the author’s house.C. The author has developed affection for the squirrel.D. The author signed an agreement with Mrs. Squirrel.47. The author has written the passage in a (an) ________ way.A. persuasiveB. seriousC. informativeD. amusingD"Panopticon" is a place in which everything is in full view of others.A recent New York Times " House and Home" article featured the story of a man who lives in a glass house.Every wall in his home is transparent; he has no walls to hide behind, not even in the bathroom.Of course, he lives in a remote area where he doesn't exactly have neighbors looking in and watching his every move. But he has chosen to live without any physical privacy in a home that allows every action to be seen.He has created his own panopticon of sorts. The term panopticon was coined by Jeremy Bentham in the late eighteenth century when he was describing an idea for how prisons should be designed. The prisoners' cells would be placed in a circle with a guard tower in the middle. All walls facing the center of the circle would be glass. In that way, every prisoner's cell would be in full view of the guards. The prisoners could do nothing unobserved, but the prisoners would not be able to see the guard tower. They would know they were being watched - or rather, they would know that they could be being watched-but because they could not see the observer, they would never know when the guard was actually monitoring their actions.Similarly, it is common that people behave differently when they know they are being watched. We act differently when we know someone is looking; we act differently when we think someone else might be looking. In these situations, we are less likely to be ourselves; instead, we will act the way we think we should act when we are being observed by others. In our wired society, many talk of the panopticon as a metaphor for the future. But in many ways, the panopticon is already here.Monitoring cameras are everywhere, and we often don't even know our actions are being recorded. In addition, we leave a record of everything we do online. And most of us have no idea just how much information about us has been recorded and how much data is available to various sources. We can do little to stop the information gathering and exchange and can only hope to be able to control the damage if something goes wrong.48.According to the passage, a panopticon is .A.a prison cellB.a house that is transparentC.a tower that provides a broad viewD.a place where everything can be seen by others49.From Paragraph 3, we learn that panopticon .A.is not applicable outside the prisonB.is used everywhere in public placesC.is an effective tool to control prisonersD.is an effective tool to share information.50.Why does the author say that panopticon is already here?A.Because our privacy is completely transparent.B.Because we are all prisoners in our own homes.C.Because our actions are observed and recorded in many cases.D.Because we are always afraid that someone might be watching us四、任务型阅读We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. Maybe some of our fears arebrought on by your own experiences, by what someone has told you,by what you’ve read in the papers. Some fears are reasonable, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o’clock in the morning. But once you learn to avoid that situation, you won’t ne ed to live in fear of it.Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions. Fear can destroy fortunes.Fear can destroy relationships. Fear, if left uncontrolled, can destroy our lives. Fear is one of the many enemies hidden inside us.Let me tell you about five of the other enemies we face from within. The first enemy thatyou’ve got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. What a tragic disease this is! “Ho-hum, let it slide. I’ll just drift along.” Here’s one problem with dr ifting: you can’t drift your way to the top of the mountain. The second enemy we face is indecision. Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future. Take a sword to this enemy. The third enemy inside is doubt. Sure, there’s room for healthy skepticism. You can’t believeeverything. But you also can’t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportu nities. Worst of all, they doubt themselves. I’m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart. Doubt is an enemy. Go after it. Get rid of it.The fourth enemy within is worry. We’ve all got to worry some. Just don’t let it defeat you. Instead, let it alarm you. Worry can be useful. If you step off the sidewalk in New York City and a taxi is coming, you’ve got to worry. But you can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you i nto a small corner. Here’s what you’ve got to do with your worries: drive them into a small corner. Whatever is out to get you, you’ve got to get it. Whatever is pushing on you, you’ve got to push back. The fifth enemy inside is overcaution. It is the timid (胆怯的) approach to life.Timidity isnot a virtue; it’s an illness. If you let it go, it’ll defeat you. Timid people don’t get promoted. They don’t advance and grow. You’ve got to avoid overcaution.Do battle with the enemies. Do battle with your fears. Build your courage tofight what’sholding you back, what’s keeping you from your goals and dreams. Be courageous in your life and in your pursuit of the things you want and the person you want to become.Title: Facing the (51) ▲ within1-5ABADB 6-10 CACAD 11-15 BADCB16-20 BABDC 21-25DACAB 26-30CADAB 31-35 CADBC36-40 DABDC 41-43 ACC 44-47 ABCD 48-50 DCC51. enemies 52.
并列句的连词有“and ”、“so ”、“but ”、“for ”、“while ”、“either … or …”、“not only …but also …”
“that ”,表示陈述概念,在从句中不作任何成分,也没有对应的汉语翻译; “whether ” 和“if ”,表示一般疑问概念,在从句中作状语,有对应的汉语翻译,即“是否”;“what ”、“which ”、“who ”、“whom ”、“whose ”、“when ”、“why ”、“how ”、“how many ”、“how much ”、“how long ”、“how often ”、“whatever ”、“whichever ”等,表示特殊疑问概念,在从句中作主语、宾语、表语、定语或状语。
引起同位语从句的连词以“that ”居多,同位语从句的内容是前置词的细化,前置词在从句中不充当任何成分。

High levelsof lead in their growing bodies can cause learning disabilities, behavioral problems, kidney disorders and other damage. Very high levels can be deadly.Fisher-Price toys that were recalled because of lead-based paint. Currently, ten micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood is what federal health officials in theUnited States call a level of concern. Yet recent studies have suggested that children with less than that can still suffer harmful effects.Lead is a metal found in nature. It can also be found in toys and other products painted with lead-based paint. Lead is also used in some ceramic and vinyl(乙烯基) products, candles, hair colorings and other goods. And it can be found in soiland air pollution from factories, power stations and the use of leaded fuel. Evenin places where lead paint is banned, it may still exist in older housing. Young children may chew on lead-painted surfaces or breathe lead dust. Or babies mightput pieces of old paint in their mouths.Experts say children and pregnant women should not be present during renovationwork in housing that might have lead paint. Public health officials advise peopleto wash children's hands and toys regularly. Floors and other surfaces should bewet-cleaned every two to three weeks to remove dust that may contain lead. To avoidlead from water pipes, use cold water to prepare food and drinks. Hot water is morelikely to contain lead. Also, run the water for fifteen to thirty seconds before drinking it, especially if the water has not been used for a few hours. The National Safety Council says a good diet can help children reduce the amountof lead that the body absorbs. This includes foods rich in iron, like eggs and beans, and foods high in calcium, like milk, cheese and yogurt. Zinc can also help the bodyfight lead absorption. In nineteen seventy-eight the United States government bannedthe sale of lead-based paint for housing. It also banned lead-painted toys and other products meant for use by children.Recently the Environmental Protection Agency proposed additional measures to protect children from contact with lead. Builders would have to be trained in lead safety when working not only in older homes, but also places like child-care centers and preschools.39. We will argue over it and may even, as a nation, make some fairly solemn-sounding commitments to avoid it. But the more dramatic and meaningful these commitments seem, the less likely they are to be observed.A1 Gore calls global warming an "inconvenient truth," as if merely recognizing it could put us on a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we don't know enough to relieve global warming, and --- without major technological breakthroughs --- we can't do much about it.From 2003 to 2050,the world 's population is projected to grow from 6.4 billion to 9.1 billion ,a 42% increase. if energy use per person and technology remain the same, total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions(mainly,CO2)will be 42% higher in 2050.But that's too low, because societies that grow richer use more energy. We need economic growth unless we condemn the world's poor to their present poverty and freeze everyone else's living standards. With modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions more then double by 2050.No government will adopt rigid restrictions on economic growth and personal freedom (limits on electricity usage, driving and travel)that might cut back globalwarming. Still, politicians want to show they're "doing something "Consider the Kyoto Protoco(京都议定书). It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didn't. But it hasn't reduced CO2 emissions(up about 25% since 1990),and many signatories(签字国) didn't adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008-2012 targets. The practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. Only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking our dependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it.The trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral problem when it's really an engineering one. The inconvenient truth is that if we don't solve the engineering problem, we're helpless.43.What is said about global warming in the first paragraph?A. It may not prove an environmental crisis at all.B. It is an issue requiring worldwide commitments.C. Serious steps have been taken to avoid or stop it.D. Very little will be done to bring it under control.44.According to the author's understanding, what is A1 Gore's view on global warming?A. It is a reality both people and politicians are unaware of.B. It is a phenomenon that causes us many inconveniences.C. It is a problem that can be solved once it is recognized.D. It is an area we actually have little knowledge about.45.The author believes that, since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol,____.A. politicians have started to do something to better the situationB. few nations have adopted real tough measures to limit energy useC. reductions in energy consumption have greatly cut back global warmingD. international cooperation has contributed to solving envoronmental problems46.What is the message the author intends to convey?A. Global warming is more of a moral issue than a practical one.B. The ultimate solution to global warming lies in new technology.C. The debate over global warming will lead to technological breakthroughs.D. People have to give up certain material comforts to stop global warming.DI am afraid to sleep. I have been afraid to sleep for the last few weeks. I am so tired that, finally, I do sleep, but only for a few minutes. It is not a bad dream that wakes me; it is the reality I took with me into sleep. I try to think of something else.Immediately the woman in the marketplace comes into my mind.I was on my way to dinner last night when I saw her. She was selling skirts. She moved with the same ease and loveliness I often saw in the women of Laos. Her long black hair was as shiny as the black silk of the skirts she was selling. In her hair, she wore three silk ribbons, blue, green, and white. They reminded me of my childhood and how my girlfriends and I used to spend hours braiding ribbons into our hair.I don't know the word for "ribbons", so I put my hand to my own hair and , withthree fingers against my head , I looked at her ribbons and said "Beautiful. " She lowered her eyes and said nothing. I wasn't sure if she understood me (I don't speak Laotian very well).I looked back down at the skirts. They had designs on them: squares and triangles and circles of pink and green silk. They were very pretty. I decided to buy one of those skirts, and I began to bargain with her over the price. It is the custom to bargain in Asia. In Laos bargaining is done in soft voices and easy moves with the sort of quiet peacefulness. She smiled, more with her eyes than with her lips. She was pleased by the few words I was able to say in her language, although they were mostly numbers, and she saw that I understood something about the soft playfulness of bargaining. We shook our heads in disagreement over the price; then, immediately, we made another offer and then another shake of the head. She was so pleased that unexpectedly, she accepted the last offer I made. But it was too soon. The price was too low. She was being too generous and wouldn't make enough money. I moved quickly and picked up two more skirts and paid for all three at the price set; that way I was able to pay her three times as much before she had a chance to lower the price for the larger purchase. She smiled openly then, and, for the first time in months, my spirit lifted. I almost felt happy. The feeling stayed with me while she wrapped the skirts in a newspaper and handed them to me. When I left, though, the feeling left, too. It was as though it stayed behind in marketplace. I left tears in my throat. I wanted to cry. I didn't, of course.I have learned to defend myself against what is hard; without knowing it, I have also learned to defend myself against what is soft and what should be easy.I get up, light a candle and want to look at the skirts. They are still in the newspaper that the woman wrapped them in. I remove the paper, and raise the skirts up to look at them again before I pack them. Something falls to the floor. I reach down and feel something cool in my hand. I move close to the candlelight to see what I have. There are five long silk ribbons in my hand, all different colors. The woman in the marketplace! She has given these ribbons to me!There is no defense against a generous spirit, and this time I cry, and very hard, as if I could make up for all the months that I didn't cry.47. According to the writer, the woman in the marketplace ______.A. refused to speak to herB. was pleasant and attractiveC. was selling skirts and ribbonsD. recognized her immediately48. Which of the following is NOT correct?A. The writer was not used to bargaining.B. People in Asia always bargain when buying things.C. Bargaining in Laos was quiet and peaceful.D. The writer was ready to bargain with the woman.49. Why did the writer finally decide to buy three skirts?A. Because the skirts were cheap and pretty.B. Because she liked the patterns on the skirts.C. Because she wanted to do something as compensation.D. Because she was fed up with further bargaining with the woman.50. Why did the writer cry eventually when she looked at the skirts again?A. Because she suddenly felt very sad.B. Because she liked the ribbons so much.C. Because she was overcome by emotion.D. Because she felt sorry for the woman.四、任务型阅读To develop one’s taste in English literature, the most effective way is to read English books widely. Yet one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate books, especially as a beginner. I would like to share some of my experience. My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat terrible. Reading the lines, I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It’s not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too remote to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway’s novel Farewell to Arms. No long and complicated sentences. And I particularly liked his concise and straightforward style. So my first suggestion is, as a begi nner, you’d better choose contemporary novels instead of classic ones. You can easily engage yourself in reading, get fun out of it, and gradually build up confidence. I do not mean to leave out classical novels for ever. Actually, the second reading of Price and Prejudice greatly pleased me(probably the result of my improved English comprehension). It is only that classical novels are less accessible to beginners due to their language styles and social background. I’d like to recommend three contemporary n ovelists to you---- Ursula Le Guin, Ernest Hemingway, and Doris lessing. However, reading novels is not the only way to improve your English. In fact, if you restrict yourself to novels you will miss a lot of treasures. English essays can at once inform you, entertain you and refine your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you can not help feeling the elegance anti the special sense of humor. His simple English enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. The same is true of George Orwell’s work. Here comes my second suggestion---- essays are absolutely essential. My last advice is never follow others’ recommendations and opinions blindly, however famous or influential the person might be. Some days ago, I listened to the audio book of Somerest Maugham’s autobiography “The Summing Up”. In a chapter he regards Edward Gibbon and Samuel Johnson’s style pompous. Though I admire Maugham’s works, I can not agree with his view. Probably one c an also label Johnson’s work as pompous, but definitely not Gibbon’s. In fact, his simple style makes his works highly readable, and you can hardly believe they were written over 200 years ago. Therefore, we should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine independently. As a saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. With that in mind, we are bound to find out our favorable writing through reading and develop our fine taste in English.1-5 BDABC 6-10 BBCDB 11—15 ACDAD16—20 BCABB 21—25 ACDBC 26—30 ADCAB 31—35 CDBACA. 36—38 CBAB. 39—42 CDBAC. 43—46 DCBBD. 47—50 BACC51. Holiday eaters were urged to “clean their plates” and were asked to take leftover food home in “doggy bags.”The impetus behind the campaign was the startling government statistic that over 200 billion yuan is s pent every year on food that ends up in the garbage bin. And in the midst of all this waste, statistics show that 128 million people are living below the poverty line and going hungry. The “clean your plate” campaign is part of a worldwide effort to stop precious food from being wasted. The United Nations estimates that $1trillion (yes, that’s a very big number) worth of food is wasted each year. Most of that is lost during food production and transportation, but a significant percentage is attributed to waste by consumers. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has launched a campaign called “Think. Eat. Save.” to make people aware of the problem.Chinese actress Fan Bingbing is an ambassador for UNEP and she encouraged people to upload pictures of their “clean plates” to show their support for the program. Thousands of people responded and demonstrated that they had a clear conscience to go along with their full stomachs.Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, is also urging people to be less wasteful and he told Party members to cut back on extravagant holiday banquets and to be more careful when spending the people’s money. For some, though, Xi Jinping’s and Fan Bingbing’s admonitions don’t go far enough. Yuan Longping, an agricultural scientist, caused a stir by saying that wasting food should be treated as a crime. (Jail time for leftover chicken feet!?) If not a crime, wasting food is certainly a sin and it goes against what Xi Jinping calls, “the Chinese tradition of being diligent and thrifty.” Having a “cleanplate” is just a traditional and responsible thing to do.36. Which statement is NOT TRUE according to the passage?A. Over 200 billion yuan is wasted every year on food around China.B. It’s quite common for Chinese people to order more food than they need inrestaurants.C. It’s universally acknowledged that wasting food is a crime.D. We hope that more advanced learners and teachers will also find it useful. The book is a comprehensive survey of structures and forms, written in clear modern English and illustrated with numerous examples. Areas of particular difficulty have been given special attention. Differences between conversational usage and strict grammatical forms are shown but the emphasis is on conversationalforms. In the fourth edition the main changes are as follows.3. Some material has been rearranged to make comparisons easier. For example, parts of chapters on can, may, must etc. are now grouped by functions; verbs of liking and preference have a chapter to themselves; suggestions and invitations have joined the chapter on commands, requests and advice.4. The contents list now summaries every edition heading, and there is a new index containing many more entries references. In this edition the sign “~” is frequently used to show a change of speaker in examples of dialogue. Note also that although the sign “=”sometimes connects two words or expressions with the same meaning, it is often used more freely, e.g. to indicate a transformation from active to passive or direct to indirect speech. We wish to thank all at Oxford University Press who have assisted in the preparation of the fourth edition. We would also like to thank Professor Egawa of Nihon University, Japan, Professor Rene Dirven of Duisburg University, West Germany and other colleagues for their friendly and helpful suggestions.London, November 1985 A.J.T., A.VM39. But in the past five years, growing scientific evidence has shown these drugs work for only a minority of people. And now a research journal says that these antidepressants can make many patients' depression worse. This alarming suggestion centres on the very chemical that is targeted by antidepressants-serotonin(血清素). Drugs such as Prozac are known as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors(or SSRIs). Their aim is to increase the level of this “feel-good” chemical in the brain. But the new research, published in the journal Frontiers In Evolutionary Psychology, points out that serotonin is like a chemical Swiss Army knife, performing a very wide range of jobs in the brain and body. And when we start changing serotonin levels purposely, it may cause a wide range of unwanted effects. These can include digestive problems and even early deaths in older people, according to the study's lead researcher Paul Andrews. “ We need to be much more cautious about use of thesedrugs,”says Andrews, an assistant professor of evolutionary psychology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.Previous research has suggested that the drugs provide little benefit for most people with mild depression, and actively help only a few of the most severely depressed. Famous psychologist Irving Kirsch has found that for many patients, SSRIs are no more effective than a placebo pill. A research in 2010 on Danish children found a small, but significant, increase in the risk of heart problems among babies whose mothers had used SSRIs in early pregnancy. The key to understanding these side-effects is serotonin, says Andrews. Serotonin is also the reason why patients can often end up feeling still more depressed after they have finished a course of SSRI drugs. He argues that SSRI antidepressants disturb the brain, leaving the patient an even greater depression than before.“After long use, when a patient stops taking SSRIs, the brain will lower its levels of serotonin production,” he says, adding that it also c hanges the way receptors in the brain respond to serotonin, making the brain less sensitive to the chemical. These changes are believed to be temporary, but studies indicate that the effects may continue for up to two years. Most disturbingly of all, Andrews' review features three recent studies which, he says , show that elderly antidepressant users are more likely to die earlier than non-users, even after taking other important variables into account. One study, published in the British Medical Journal last year, found patients given SSRIs were more than 4 per cent more likely to die in the next year than those not on the drugs.“Serotonin is an ancient chemical,” says Andrews. “It is regulating many different processes, and when you disturb these things, you can expect that it is going to cause some harm.”Stafford Lightman, professor of medicine at the University of Bristol, and a leading UK expert in brain chemicals and hormones, says Andrews’ review highlights some important problems, yet it should also be taken with a pinch of salt. “This report is doing the opposite of what drug companies do,” he says. “Drug companies selectively present all the positives in their research, while this search selectively presents all the negatives that can be found. Nevertheless, Andrews' study is useful in that it is always worth pointing out that there is a downside to any medicine. ” Professor Lightman adds that there is still a great deal we don't know about SSRIs-not least what they actually do in our brains. When it comes to understanding why the drugs work only for a limited part of patients, U.S. scientists think they might now have the answer. They think that in many depressed patients, it’s not only the lack of feel-good serotonin causing their depression, but also a failure in the area of the brain that produces new cells throughout our lives. This area, the hippocampus, is also responsible for regulating mood and memory. Research suggests that in patients whose hippocampus has lost the ability to produce new cells, SSRIs do not bring any benefit.43. According to paragraph 2, serotonin, like a chemical Swiss Army knife, can .A. make many patients' depression worseB. cause a widerange of unwanted effectsC. affect human body and brain in various waysD. provide little benefit for most depressed people44. In Stafford Lightman's opinion, .A. drug companies don't know the negative effect of antidepressantsB. Andrews focused on different things from the drug companiesC. scientists have found what SSRIs do in the brainD. Andrews' research has no medical value45. Which of the following is TRUE about SSRIs?A. They are used to increase the “feel-good” medical in the brain.B. They can work even when the hippocampus can't produce new cells.C. They create a risk of heart problems in pregnant women.D. They are responsible for controlling mood and memory.46. What is the text mainly about?A. The aim of drug companies.B. The function of SSRIs.C. The side-effects of antidepressants.D. The cause of depression.DDetective Keeling took his client —a good-looking lady into the back yard of the store together. The lady opened a door in the wall and they entered the small room behind the store. They crossed the room to a locked door. The detective went quickly to the policeman’s house. Then the two men hurried to the jewellery store. They looked through the window. The policeman was surprised. He spoke to Mr. Keeling. “I don’t understand. You told me, ‘Robbins took a young woman to a restaurant.’ Where is she?”“There she is !” said Mr. Keeling. He pointed through the window.“Do you know the lady with Robbins?” asked the policeman.“That’s his secret friend,” said Mr. Keeling.“N o! You’re wrong! That’s Robbins’ wife,” said the policeman. “I’ve known her for fifteen years.”“What ?” the detective shouted. His face became pale. “Who is under the table in the store?”He started to kick the door of the jewellery store.Mr. Robbins came to the door and opened it. The missing jewellery was worth $800.Later that night, Mr. Keeling was sitting in his office. He was looking through a big book of photographs. They were photographs of criminals. The policeman had brought the book to the detective’s office. Suddenly, Mr. Keeling stopped turning the pages. He looked at a picture of a handsome young man with a familiar face. The next morning, Mr. Keeling paid the jeweler $800, and then closed his office.47. At the beginning, the lady was able to go into the jewellery store because ___________.A. she went to the back yard and found the wayB. she was the owner of the store and had the keyC. two men helped her together to enter the storeD. Many people are accustomed to choosing snack foods in grocery stores. The first problem with packaged snack foods like cookies, crackers, and otherbite-sized options is that they are often loaded with unhealthy materials. The reason for this is fairly easy to understand. Mass-produced foods need to be uniform in color, taste and so on. In order to achieve this uniformity, snack food producers use sugar, salt, and other chemical preservatives (防腐剂) and coloring materials in large amounts. These materials contribute to a rather unhealthy food.In addition to requiring uniformity of taste and appearance, mass-produced snack foods like potato chips and candies need to be shelf stable. Preservatives and complex packaging make products shelf stable, but this stability and non-perish ability (抗腐性) often come at the expense of nutrition. One reason that pre-made snacks are so popular in grocery stores is their prices. Food producers can keep costs down by using established production facilities and processes to quickly produce a huge amount of food. Shoppers are drawn to what they see at low prices.People who are interested in improving the quality of their snacking can use magazines, books, and the Internet to discover a lot of healthy snacking tips and ideas. Even television shows about health and food sometimes talk about healthy snacking alternatives. Some healthy snacks, like fresh fruit, require no preparation at all.Once people are aware of the drawbacks of clearly cheap and easy snack foods, they can start turning to better options. Soon, perhaps, the old and unhealthy snack1-5 ACBBC 6-10 BCADD 11-15 CABAA16-20 DCDBD 21-25 CAACA 26-30 CBDAD 31-35 ACABD36-38 CCB 39-42 DCCD 43-46 CBAC 47-50 DCBB51. received 52. British director Steve McQueen’s brave portrayal of pre-Civil War American slavery won two other Oscars, including best supporting actress for newcomer Lupita Nyong’o and best adapted screenplay based on the memoir of Solomon Northup, a free man tricked and sold into slavery in Louisiana. “Everyone deserves not jus t to survive but to live. This is the most important legacy of Solomon Northup,” said McQueen in his acceptance speech.“12 Years a Slave” was better over space thriller “Gravity” from Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron, which nevertheless got the most Oscars of the night with seven, including the best director honor for Cuaron, a first for a Latin American director. The film starring Sandra Bullock as an astronaut lost in space swept the technical awards like visual effects and cinematography, a reward for its groundbreaking work on conveying space and weightlessness. Referring to the “transformative” experience he and others undertook in the four-plus years spent making “Gravity”, Cuaron, whose hair is graying, said, “For a lot of these people, that transform ation was wisdom. For me, it was just the color of my hair.”In one of the strongest years for film in recent memory, the 6,000-plus voters of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences scattered golden Oscar statuettes among the many acclaimed movies in contention. It was a good night for the scrappy, low-budget film “Dallas Buyers Club”, directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, a biopic of an early AIDS activist two decades in the making that won three Oscars, including the two male acting awards. Matthew McConaughey, in a validation of a remarkable career turnaround, won best actor for his portrayal of the homophobe who turned AIDS victim and then turned treatment crusader Ron Woodroof, a role for which he lost 50 pounds (23 kg). His co-star, Jared Leto, wo n best supporting actor for his role as Woodroof’s unlikely business partner, the transgender woman Rayon, for which he also slimmed down drastically.Australia’s Cate Blanchett won the best actress Oscar for her acclaimed role as the socialite unhinged by her husband’s financial crimes in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine.” “As random and subjective as this award is, it means a great deal in a year of, yet again, extraordinary performances by women,” said Blanchett, who beat out previous Oscar winners Bullock, Amy Adams, Judi Dench and Meryl Streep.36. His father was a maker and mender of pots and kettles, and the son followed the same trade. Though he is usually called a tinker, Bunyan had a settled home and place of business. He had little schooling, and he describes his early surroundings as poor and mean. He became much interested in religions, but it was only after a tremendous spiritual conflict, lasting three or four years, that he found peace. His struggles are related with extraordinary vividness and intensity in his “Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners.” His writing began with a controversy against the Quakers (教友派), and shows from the first the command of a homely but vigorous style.Like most working men at the time, Bunyan had a deep hatred for the corrupted, hypocritical rich who accumulated their wealth “by hook and by crook.” As a stout Puritan(清教徒), he had made a conscientious study of the Bible and firmly believed in salvation (拯救) through spiritual struggle.B unyan’s style was modeled after that of the English Bible. With his concrete and living language and carefully observed and vividly presented details, he made it possible for the reader of the least education to share the pleasure of reading his novel and to relive the experience of his characters.Bunyan’s works include Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666), The Life and Death of Mr. Badman(1680), The Holy War(1682) and The Pilgrim’s Progress (1684).The Pilgrim’s Progress is the most successful religious allegory (寓言) in the English language. Its purpose is to urge people to observe Christian doctrines and seek salvation through constant struggle with their own weaknesses and all kinds of social evils. It is not only about something spiritual but also bears much relevance to the time. Its predominant metaphor — life as a journey — is simple and familiar. The objects that Christian meets are homely and commonplace, and the scenes presented are typical English ones, but throughout the allegory a spiritual significance is added to the commonplace details. Here the strange is combined with the familiar and the trivial joined to the divine, and, a rich imagination and a natural talent for storytelling also contribute to the success of the work which is at once entertaining and morally instructive.“The Vanity Fair,” is an excerpt from The Pilgrim’s Progress. The story starts with a dream in which the author sees Christian the Pilgrim, with a heavy burden on his back, reading the Bible. When he learns from the book that the city in which he and his family live shall be burnt down in a fire, Christian tries to convince his family and his neighbors of the oncoming disaster and asks themto go with him in search of salvation, but most of them simply ignore him. So he starts off with a friend, Pliable. Pliable turns back after they stumble into a pit, the Slough of Despond. Christian struggles on by himself. Then he is misled by Mr. Wordly Wiseman and is brought back onto the right road by Mr. Evangelist. There he joins Faithful, a neighbor who has set out later but has made better progress. The two go on together through many adventures, including the great struggle with Apollyon, who claims them to be his subjects and refuse to accept their allegiance to God. After many other adventures they come to the Vanity Fair where both are arrested as alien agitators. They are tried and Faithful is condemned to death. Christian, however manages to escape and goes on his way, assisted by a new friend, Hopeful. Tired of the hard journey, they are tempted to take pleasant path and are then captured by Giant Despair. Finally they got away and reach the Celestial City, where they enjoy eternal life in the fellowship of the blessed.43. According to the passage, Bunyan hated the rich people mainly because ______.A. his father was making and mending pots and kettlesB. Bunyan had poor and mean early surroundingsC. the rich usually got their wealth in dishonest waysD. Bunyan studied the Bible to save the human souls44. John Bunyan wrote the book The Pilgrim’s Progress in order to ______.A. advise people to obey religious principles for salvationB. tell people that life is a simple and familiar journeyC. add spiritual significance to the commonplace detailsD. to combine the strange things with the familiar things46. What moral does the story of the last paragraph convey to us?A. Any imaginable things might happen in a pilgrim’s dream.B. Christian the Pilgrim likes reading the Bible with a burden.C. People can struggle against weaknesses and evils for salvationD. People can enjoy eternal life in the fellowship of the blessed.DForbes set out to determine which master’s degrees would provide the best long-term opportunities, based on salary and employment outlook. To find the mid-career average pay for 35 popular degrees, we turned to , which lets users compare their salaries with those of other people in similar jobs by gathering real-time salary data from its 35 million profiles. We then looked atthe Bureau of Labor Statistics’ employment estimate data to see how fast employment was expected to increase between 2010 and 2020 in popular jobs held by people with each degree. Finally we averaged each degree’s pay rank and estimated(评估) growth ra nk to find the best and worst master’s degrees for jobs.Physician assistant degree is at the top of the Forbes’ third-annual look at the best master’s degrees for jobs. Physician assistants are medical professionals who provide diagnostic and preventative health care services under the guidance of doctors.“Both an aging population and health care reform are contributing to a higher demand for health care services,” says Katie Bardaro, Payscale’s lead economist. They don’t earn as much as doctors, but the ir mid-career average pay is $97,000. Another advantage of a physician assistant degree: Employment opportunities are expected to grow 30% by 2020 (from the 2010 employment numbers), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.By our count, computer science follows close behind as the No. 2 best advanced degree for jobs. Mid-career average pay for these grads is $109,000, sixth best out of the 35 degrees in our survey. Employment opportunities for computer science degree-holders are expected to expand about 22% between 2010 and 2020. Electrical engineering, physics and economics degrees also make the top 10, all with an average mid-career salary of more than $110,000 a year. Not all master’s degree holders enjoy anywhere near such optimistic job prospects(前景) or extraordinary pay. Biology, chemistry and history degrees are toward the bottom of the list—but that doesn’t mean they’re useless. If you’re enthusiastic about these fields, the lower pay and slimmer job prospects shouldn’t prevent you from pursuing a master’s.Before you make a decision, you should bear one thing in mind: master’s degree-holders don’t necessarily earn more than other people in similar jobs—so don’t base your decision to pursue one on the idea that you’ll bring in bigger paychecks.I t’s also important to think about work-life balance and employee satisfaction for the common jobs associated with these degrees. “You need to consider overall happiness,” Bardaro says. “If obtaining a master’s degree causes an imbalance due to time devoted to education and potentially more stress at work, then one will need to decide if these costs are worth it.”47. Forbes turned to to __________.A. let users compare their salaries with those of other people in different jobsB. see how fast employment was expected to increase between 2010 and 2020C. sum up the pay of those graduates with 35 popular degrees in different fieldsD. figure out the mid-career average pay in popular jobs held by people with different degree48. Physician assistant degree ranks first on the list because __________.A. Physician assistants are medical professionals.B. Physician assistants enjoy the highest pay compared with other grads.C. The qualifications of physician assistants are not second to those of doctors.D. The demand of physician assistants is expected to expand largely and they are well-paid.49. What can be inferred from the passage?A. $100,000 is a satisfying pay for most of the grads.B. It is the first time that Forbes has done a survey of this kind.C. Biology degrees were once hot for those master’s degree pursuers.D. Doctors earn more than those in electrical engineering on the average.50. According to what Bardaro said in the last paragraph, we may safely conclude that __________.A. obtaini ng a master’s degree is a mustB. a master’s degree is not always worth pursuingC. obtaining a master’s degree leads to an imbalance between work and lifeD. those with master’s degrees are bound to earn more than other people in similar jobs四、任务型阅读Naturally regulate your sleep-wake cycleMelatonin(褪黑激素) is a naturally occurring hormone(激素) that helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin production is controlled by light exposure. Your brain should produce more in the evening, when it's dark, to make you sleepy, and less during the day when it's light and you want to stay awake. However, many aspects of modern life can disturb your body's natural production of melatonin and your sleep-wake cycle.Spending long days in an office away from natural light, for example, can impact your daytime wakefulness and make your brain sleepy. Then bright lights at night —especially from hours spent in front of the TV or computer screen—can hold back your body's production of melatonin and make it harder to sleep, However, there are ways for you to naturally regulate your sleep-wake cycle, improve your body's production of melatonin, and keep your brain on a healthy schedule.Increase light exposure during the day☆Remove your sunglasses in the morning and let light onto your face.☆Spend more time outside during daylight. Try to take your work breaks outside in sun light, exercise outside, or walk your dog during the day instead of at night. ☆Let as much light into your home/workspace as possible. Keep curtains and blinds open during the day, move your desk closer to the window.☆If necessary, use a light treatment box. A light treatment box can create sunshine and can be especially useful during short winter days when there's limiteddaylight.Improve melatonin production at night☆Turn off your television and computer. Many people use the television to fall asleep or relax at the end of the day. Not only does the light hold back melatonin production, but television can actually excite the mind, rather than relaxing it. Try listening to music or audio books, or practicing relaxation exercises. If your favorite TV show is on late at night, record it for viewing earlier in the day. ☆Don't read from a backlit device at night (such as an iPad). If you use a portable electronic device to read, use an eReader that is not backlit, i. e. one that requires an additional light source such as a bedside lamp.☆Change your light bulbs. Avoid bright lights before bed, use low-wattage bulbs instead.☆When it's time to sleep, make sure the room is dark. The darker it is, the better you'll sleep. Cover electrical displays, use heavy curtains or shades to block light from windows, or try an eye mask to cover your eyes.☆ Use a flashlight to go to the bathroom at night. As long as it's safe to do so, keep the light to a minimum so it will be easier to go back to sleep. 51. occurs 52. while 53. Hello, everyone! Nowadays, some of us don’t like memorizing new words. Thus, spelling mistakes are unavoidable, which affects what they express. How to handle the phenomenon? Firstly, we should accumulate the knowledge about English pronunciation. As is known, English pronunciation is closely related to English spelling. Secondly, whether in our listening, speaking, reading or writing practice, it’s necessary to apply new words as much as possible. Only by making use of new words frequently can we spell them accurately. Thirdly, it’s a good idea to memorize new words in word groups. For example, when we learn the word “victim”, some other words ought to be presented such as “suspect”, “witness”, “lawyer”and “judge”.Ok! How do you like my suggestions? Maybe they will make a difference to your avoiding spelling mistakes. That’s all. (Words: 133)___________________________________________________________Notes1. We friends share our happiness and sorrow. Without friends, we would have no sense of safety. Next, respect and trust our friends. Never offend them on purpose. If misunderstandings arose, we would try to remove them. Finally, it’s necessary to chat with friends often. By doing so, not only do we get useful information but also we strengthen our friendship.Ok! What is above mentioned is my answer to the question how we should get along well with friends. Hello, everyone! How do you like the belief that life is partly what you make it and partly what it is made by the friends whom you choose? Here is my story. In primary school, I had a friend. He was intelligent and excellent. However, later, he became addicted to online games. Also, unconsciously I began to get attached to them. Naturally we were both growing weaker and weaker in our studies. When I realized what the problem was, I stopped communicating with him. Now, as my friends are all healthy and hardworking, my studies have improved greatly. Again, my life is full of sunshine.Ok!
