We had a lot of conversations about this topic. And we couldn't think of a good answer.We felt kind of stupid- because we were supposed to be good English teachers!Well, after many more weeks of thinking and talking-- we finally got a great idea: we would call each other on the phone, and record the conversations.We also decided that these would be REAL conversations-- no reading, no acting-- real conversations with real idioms and real slang.Then we thought, "Let's call some of our family and other friends too-- and we will NOT tell them we are recording the conversation-- so the conversation will be totally real."So we did that too.We thought, "This is great! We'll give these conversations to our students and they will improve quickly and everyone will think we are great teachers!"So we did it and.... our students were still upset! They said, "These conversations are too difficult. He moved to Canada a few years ago. He studied English in Venezuela for many years-- mostly grammar.In fact, Humberto learned English with his eyes- by reading textbooks, by studying grammar books, by remembering word lists.He thought his English was good. But when he came to Canada he was surprised and shocked-- he couldn't understand anyone!He joined an English school in Canada. He went to school every day. What did they teach him? More textbooks, more grammar books, more word lists!After 12 months of school, Humberto was angry and frustrated. The school cost over $10,000 for one year-- but he still could not speak English.
