And this turned out to be an awesome experience. The organization Ouachita Green put together this event, which allowed people from the Monroe area of Louisiana to bring in their recyclables, free of charge. Unfortunately, Louisiana is lacking in environmentally-friendly initiatives(倡议) so recycling is not offered to most people in our community. In contrast, it is required by law to recycle back in my home New Jersey. This truth astonished me, but more importantly, it encouraged me to seek change.I meant to make a difference. Through joint efforts, my classmates and I ended up starting the Green Club at the University of Louisiana. It focuses on creating a green attitude within the university and the greater Monroe area. While working on it, I met a group of ambitious high school students, who shared the same concern about the environment as us. While talking, we decided that working together would benefit not only the organizations at our schools, but also the community as a whole. Is we let the community know we are serious, there is an even better chance that we will succeed and influence others. If you are hesitant to volunteer or help out with an event in your community, my recommendation is to go ahead and do it. On the other hand, competition can also have some disadvantages, though. Some industries tend to be more competitive in the workplace than others. For instance, those in the sales field will typically be more competitive with co-workers than individuals in other fields, such as information technology. Nevertheless, a little competition in even the least competitive industries can be positive.Competition in the workplace can create an environment where employees push each other to exceed their normal limits, which can result in increased production, both at an individual level and among the entire workforce as a whole. As individual production numbers increase, so do those of the entire team of workers who seek to outdo one another. Competition can be rewarded with bonuses or various types of rewards.Workplace competition can also inspire a commitment to self-improvement. While financial motivations and bonuses are always a plus to get the competition going, those who see the bigger picture may take the competitionas an opportunity to better themselves in the process of winning the competition. Self-improvement may include actions like changing work habits to be more organized, using visualization and goal setting to achieve goals and simply performing higher quality work. Not all competition in the workplace necessarily has to take place at the individual level. Competition can bring about a sense of teamwork in the workplace when workers are placed in groups and asked to compete with one another, which can have a number of positive results that come from workers cooperating with each other. For example, workers can learn the value of communication and helping someone else, both of which have an influence on other areas of work like customer service.8.What does the underlined word “exceed” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. LifeB. CancelC. Break throughD. Set up9.Which industry is likely to involve more workplace competition?A. The sales fieldB. Film ProductionC. Customer serviceD. Information technology10.How can competition contribute to employees’ self-improvement?A. It changes their lifestyles greatlyB. It assists them to achieve a higher goalC. It improves their financial managementD. It offers them chances to change for the better11.What is the best title for the text?A. Benefits of Workplace CompetitionB. Reasons for Joining in CompetitionsC. Approaches to Winning CompetitionD. Strengths and Weaknesses of CompetitionDArtificial intelligence, or AI, has slowly begun to influence higher education around the world. Now, one new AI tool could change the way university students evaluate their professor. The tool is called Hubert, a teacher evaluation tool that appears as an AI-powered chatbot. Instead of filling out a form, students use a chat window to give feedback(反馈) on the course and their professor. Afterwards, Hubert categorizes the students’ comments for the professor to review.Hubert is free for educators to use. More than 600 teachers have used it already. The goal of the new Hubert program is to improve education by giving teachers detailed, organized feedback from students.Viktor Nordmark, from Sweden, started the company in 2015, with several friends. Before creating Hubert, the founders asked teachers what would improve their teaching skills. The answer, Nordmark said, was qualitative(定性的) feedback from their students. In other words, teachers wanted students to write detailed answers to open-ended questions about their experiences in class.Qualitative feedback is different from the survey responses, which students are often asked to provide at the end of a class. “This kind of data takes a lot of time for professors to collect and analyze,” Nordmark said. And for the students, it can also be “really boring to fill out.”So Nordmark and his friends designed Hubert as a compromise betw een a traditional survey and a personal interview. “You can reach a really large crowd, but you can also get really qualitative data back,” Nordmark said. Now, when Hubert receives comments from students, it compares them with the information already in its system to organize the data. After all, the American Film Institute seems to think so – the show has been named as one of its 10 best TV shows of 2016.This Is Us follows the lives of five people living in different cities in the US: Pittsburgh resident Jack, whose wife, Rebecca, is about to give birth to triplets(三胞胎); LA acting star Kevin and his sister. Kate, who is struggling with her weight; and East Coast businessman, Randall, who was adopted as a kid and is looking for his birth father. William. At the beginning it may look like there is nothing special about the story, but soon you’ll see that the show plays a trick in its story telling. It weaves together the past and present of the characters ----Kate and Kevin are, in fact, two of Jack and R ebecca’s triplets, and Randall was adopted to replace the third t riplet who didn’t survive when born. This way, you can see how the children--- even though they are now turning 36----still face challenge as adults. And their problems are common issues that we may all meet with in certain periods of our lives, which is why we can easily feel connected to the characters. For example, Kevin, the star of a boring sitcom, tries hand so that he can be respected as an actor. Kate, due to her weight problem, approaches romantic relationships with excitement, but also with a bit of fear. And when Randall finally meets his birth father only to find he is dying of cancer. He decides to build a father-son relationship--- which he never had the chance before--- in the limited time they have.“What they’ve experienced often happens in our life. The characters in the show.CThere are houses for cold climates, designed to keep in the heat, and there are homes for hot climates, built to allow air to sweep through and keep its owners cool, but never did the two meet, until now.It sounds hard to believe, but British architects David Ben-Grunberg and Daniel Woolfson have designed an unbelievable folding house that is transformed into eight different forms and seasons. The architecture is inspired by the Haberdashers Formula(公式), which explains how a perfect square can be turned into an equilateral triangle by cutting it into four different shapes. The architects’designs use this theory so their architecture can be transformed into eight different forms. The house consists of two bedrooms, an open-plan living room and a bathroom, but it can be adapted to suit the needs of different living situations. For example, in summer, bedroom one faces east and tracks the using a series of sensors. As the owner wakes up, the house automatically turns to ensure the house is bathed in sunlight, while the house produces energy through its solar panels. In winter, the house is in a square formation, with small windows and comfortable temperatures. Aside from moving to provide more light, the house is also designed to wave money on heating and prevent energy waste. With thoughtful design it can provide a cheap and abundant source of energy in your building. This energy can be used to heat spaces, provide hot water, and even air-condition the house, "they said. The two architects described their house concept as a product of an applied mathematical realization. Their company is set to cause a revolution in architecture and design, and it will be able to change patterns of living in the future.8. From Paragraph 2, we can know .A. It can be inferred that .A. great changes are likely to take place in architectureB. the house will cause great argument in architectureC. the house will be very popular among the rich peopleD. The Application of a Mathematical TheoryDIn my middle school there were “cool” kids and “not-so-cool” kids, and fitting in was so important to me and my young friends. Now we all grow up and mature(成熟), but we still feel a need to belong. You might not have the need to feel cool or popular like you did when you were 12 years old but no one wants to feel like an outsider, especially when growing up.Maybe you are struggling with feeling like you don’t belong. Maybe it's the fact that you are trying to adopt a healthier lifes tyle when others around you don’t support it. You go to a restaurant with your friends, and suddenly you are no longer sharing the chips and cheese dip that come before the meal. When they suggest beading to the ice cream shop for the dessert, you politely refuse. Suddenly something you once shared with a group of people in n ow what you don’t have in common. That can certainly make you feel like you don't belong. So what can you do? I think the first step is to talk about how you are feeling. Getting it out there can make you feel better, and can also help those: around you better understand what's going on. Maybe there are things they can do to help you feel less like an outsider, such as skipping dessert and taking a walk together instead. Although there are some things you may no longer have in common, I’d bet there are some things you do Focus on those ways in which you can relate, instead of putting all the stress on the ways you can’t.I think I’ll always feel like I’m a little different from those around me. As I get older, I try to embrace those differences instead of trying to fight them or convince others about why I’m right. We are all different, and that's what makes us interesting.12. Why do you still have the need to belong when growing up?A. You feel it’s cool.B. you hope to be popular.C. No one wants to be left out.D. You will be aided while in trouble.13. Why do you feel you don’t belong?A. Your friends often ignore your opinions.B. You dislike the unhealthy life your friends live.C. Your friends are too mean to get along well with.D. If you have to make a decision of this type, most people (especially very busy people) will choose to skip breakfast. However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast ( the meal which “break”you “fast” ) to be the most important meal of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say, we will have the energy and nutrients (营养) we need to begin our working day with vigor(活力) and stay hopeful with good honor. However, many people skip breakfast or substitute a cup of coffee for a well balanced meal. What happens if we ignore the importance of breakfast? One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people. Participants included both males and females who ranged in age from 12 to 83. The results showed that if a person eats an adequate breakfast, he or she will work more efficiently and more productively than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person’s work involve s mental(脑力的) activities. The study showed that if school-children eat fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, they will learn more quickly and will be able to concentrate on their lessons for a longer period of time than if their breakfast is inadequate. The study also showed that contrary to what people believe, if you skip breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat too much for lunch and end up gaining we ight instead of losing. So remember, if you want to lose weight, skipping breakfast will not help you. You will probably lose more weight if you decrease your other meals.21.According to experts, breakfast is the most important meal of the day because_____.A. a good breakfast breaks you down fast.B. breakfast provides what a person needs to work.C. You’ll lose weight quickly if you skip breakfast.D. after a long night, you’ll feel very hungry.22.The underlined part“substitute a cup of coffee for a well balanced meal”(Para.2)probably means _______.A. to exchange a cup of coffee for a well balanced meal.B. to change a cup of coffee into a well balanced meal.C. to drink a cup of coffee instead of a well balanced meal.D. to consider a cup of coffee as a well balanced meal.23.The study showed that if school children ______ before going to school, they willlearn more efficiently.A. eat eggs and coffeeB. skip breakfast altogetherC. just eat fruit and milkD. have an adequate breakfast24.Which of the following is NOT true according toPara. 4?A. Some people skip breakfast because they want to be thinner.B. Most people who skip breakfast actually eat more for lunch.C. People put on weight because they eat too much breakfast.D. Skipping breakfast won’t help people who want to lose weight.BWanted, Someone for a KissWe’re looking for producers to join us in the second of London100FM.You’ll work on the station’s music programs.Music production experience in radio is necessary, along with rich knowledge of modern dance music. Please apply (申请) in writing to Producer Vacancies, Kiss100.Father ChristmasWe’re looking for a very special person preferably over 40, to fill our Father Christmas suit.Working days: Every Saturday from November 24 to December 15 and every day from December17 to December24 except Sunday, 10:30—16:00 Excellent pay. Please contact(联系)the Enterprise Shopping Center, Station Parade, East Bourne.Accountants AssistantWhen you join the them in our Revenue Administration Unit, you will be providing assistance within all parts of the Revenue Division, dealing with post and other general duties. If you are educated to GCSE grade C level we would like to talk to you. This position is equally suitable for a school leaver of for somebody who has office experience.Wealden District CouncilSoftware TrainerIf you are aged 24-45 and have experience in teaching and training, you could be the person we are looking for.You should be good at the computer and have some experience in program me writing. You will be allowed to make our decision, and to design courses as well as present them.Pay upwards of£15,000 for the right person. Please apply by sending your CV(简历) to Mrs R.Oglivie, Palmlace Limited.25.Who should you get in touch with if you hope to work in a radio station?A. My parents spent a lot of money on a private school, so they could get me into a competitive middle school. Everything was about tomorrow, next year, my graduation. We never had to worry about today. Before last summer I never thought much about the people in the world who live day to day, every day, whose lives are controlled by poverty and hunger. Then I enrolled in a two-week intensive program. We lived in a “Tri bal Village,” in a hot, dry open grassland inArkansas, a state of the south-central United States. I am a tribal member inMozambique, a country of southeastAfrica. Every meal, I make the fire for my family, and feel the flames lick up my nostrils as I blow to keep the fuel alive.I cook mush with vegetables. This is all my family is ever given.I feed the hen and three rabbits their dinner. I grow attached to the rabbits, even though I know I shouldn’t. I name them. I’m not getting enough to eat; it’s time to decide whether or not to kill the rabbits. I feel pain but it’s a privileged child’s pain because I know I will soon be eating again. That’s not true for a lot of other children around the world.Growing up comfortably in the U.S., I’ve never had to worry about my dinner, and even though this whole process was only a simulation, it changed my life. Now I believe in doing whatever I can to help find practical ways to defeat hunger. So I’ve become president of Roots and Shoots, a group working to improve local environments for people and animals. I’m also working to create a program at my high school called the “Safe Passage” trip to help young people in the Guatemala City dump. And I’ve got plans to do more.I'm often thinking of laboring in the hot sun and the millions who still do. Now, I try to live for today and stop worrying so much about the future.
