In my class, Luca and I didn’t see eye to eye.Once, one of our maths problems had the number 9,999. “Oh,” she said. “All those nines. They feel so…so purple!”
“Purple?” I wondered. I saw numbers as logical(逻辑的) and orderly, not as colours. I thought Luca and I lived in different universes.
Last month, our teacher asked Luca and me to finish a class project together. We had to do a report on the Statue of Liberty (自由女神像). “No way can I work with someone who says nines feel purple,” I said to myself.
At our first meeting on Friday, Luca and I came up with a plan. Luca would make a statue and I would write the report. But on Monday, Luca told me that she was going to visit her great-grandfather for six days. It meant that I, the one who even couldn’t draw a simple picture, would have to make the statue. And she, the one who didn’t like to think logically, would have to write the report. I felt so worried about our class project.
“Please be at my house at 2:00 on Sunday afternoon,” I said.
While she was gone, I made the statue according to some ways I found online. Sunday finally arrived, and Luca returned with something in her hand.
“What’s that?” I asked. “Where is the report?”
“It’s a digital recorder (数字录音机),” she said. “A report didn’t feel right, so I d id something else.”
I tried to keep my voice calm as I said, “But this isn’t about feelings. It’s about the Statue of Liberty. Statues don’t have feelings,” I said.
“Statues don’t have feelings, but my great-grandfather does,” Luca said. Now I knew we were from different universes and I was confused (困惑的) because I had no idea what she was talking about. “I interviewed him about when he came to America and saw the statue. Listen!” She turned on the recorder.
An old voice came on. “When I was young, I was poo r. So I decided to go to America, where I could have a better life. I got on a ship. One morning, someone shouted, ‘America!’ There she was, Lady Liberty. All of us cried...”
Luca turned off the recorder and said, “He talked more about his life and work.”
“You are right,” I thought for a while. “Who says a report has to be on paper?”
The next day, we put our statue in the classroom. I introduced the statue and Luca told about her great-grandfather. Then she said, “This is what the Statue of Liberty feels like.” And she turned on the recorder. When her great-grandfather said, “There she was, Lady Liberty. All of us cried,” everyone was looking at the statue, quiet.
Luca and I got an A and we were very happy. Sometimes, we really should learn to accept others’ ideas.
