高四英语周练第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AA Samoan airline says that it is the world’s f irst carrier to charge passengers by their weight. Samoa Air, which opened in 2012, asks passengers to give their personal weight during booking, which is then charged according to the length of a flight. The customers will also be weighed just before they board the plane."It is believed that all people throughout the world are the same size," Samoa Air CEO Chris Langton said. "Airplanes always run on weight, not seats.""There is no doubt in my mind that this is the concept of the future. This is the fairest way of your travelling with your family or yourself."Though the airline introduced the plan last November, it caught people's attention last week when the carrier began international flights to neighboring American Samoa.Almost at the same time, a Norwegian economist, Bharat Bhatta, published a report suggesting that airlines should charge obese(过度肥胖的)passengers more. The Pacific Islands contain some of the world’s most common countries for obesity, many ranking in the top 10, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Samoa is ranked number four, with 59.6 percent of the population considered obese, said the most recent WHO report.According to Samoa Air's latest schedule, the airline charges up to $0.57 per kg for flights in Samoa and $1.03 per kg for its only international flight to American Samoa, around 250 miles.Children under 12 are charged 75 percent of the adult rate, with fares also based on weight. Any overweight baggage is calculated at the same rate as the passenger's personal weight. The plan could actually prove cheaper in some cases, such as for families travelling with small children, and Langton said customer reaction has mainly been "amazingly positive".The idea of charging passengers by weight has been hotly discussed before, and in the US some airlines require those who do not fit into a seat comfortably to buy a second seat.21. What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. Airlines should charge passengers by flight length.B. All people throughout the world are the same size.C. It is unfair to weigh passengers at the airport.D. Airplanes always run on weight, not seats.22. In Bharat Bhatta’s eye s, Samoa Air's plan might be _______.A. funnyB. acceptableC. strangeD. disappointing23. A 100 kg adult flying to American Samoa would be charged _______.A. $57B. $75C. $103D. $12524. What does the text mainly tell us?A. 59.6% of Samoans are considered obese.B. Samoa Air introduces pay-by-weight pricing.C. Airlines should charge obese passengers more.D. Baggage must be calculated as passengers’ weight.BHow many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you might see the Moon, some planets, and thousands of sparkling stars. You can see even more with a telescope. You might see stars where before you only saw dark space. You might see that many stars look larger than others. You might see that some stars that look white are really red or blue. With bigger and bigger telescope you can see more and more objects in the sky. And you can see those objects in more and more detail. But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won’t see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year. That’s because they’re invisible. They’re the mysterious dead stars called black holes. You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning brightly, giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn’t seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years. As a star’s gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gas runs out, the star stops burning and begins to die.As the star cools, the outer layers of the star pull in toward the center. The star squashes(挤) into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, the star ends up as a cold, dark ballcalled a black dwarf. If the star was very big, it keeps squashing inward until it’s packed together tighter than anything in the universe.Imagine if the Earth were crushed(挤压) until it was the size of a tiny marble(弹球). That’s how tightly this dead star, a black hole, is packed. What pulls the star in towards its center with such power? It’s the same force that pulls you down when you jump – the force called gravity. A black hole is so tightly packed that its gravity sucks in everything – even light. The light from a black hole can never come back to your eyes. That’s why you see nothing but blackness. So the next time you stare up at the night sky, remember: there’s more in the sky than meets the eyes! Scattered(散开) in the silent darkness are black holes – the great mystery of space.25. According to the article, what causes a star to die?A. As its gases run out, it cools down.B. It crashes into other stars.C. It can only live for about a million years.D. As it gets hotter and hotter, it explodes.26. Paragraph 6 and Paragraph 7 mainly tells us ______.A. what a black hole isB. why we can’t see black holesC. black holes have enormous gravityD. the formation of black holes27. What happens AFTER a star dies?A. It burns up all of its gases.B. It becomes invisible.C. It falls to Earth.D. It becomes brighter and easier to see.28. Why can’t you see light when you look at a black hole?A. Most black holes are so far away.B. Because the gravity of a black hole is so strong that it sucks the light inward.C. Because as the star’s gases burn, it stops giving off heat and light.D. Because as a star cools, its outer layers pull in toward its center.CMoving to a new city and state was difficult for me, especially in winter. Little did I know that a Colorado snowstorm would greet me after I had been in my new home for only a week.I just missed home. But more than the old house and the beach, I missed Stacey, my best friend. And I missed our lovely tea. Going to a sweet little tearoom, we had discovered a special treat for us. The place was a Victorian dream, with delicate teacups and tablecloths with flowerprints. The hat shelf near the front door swept us back to childhood. Stacey and I became little girls, trying on different hats until we found the perfect one for our dress-up tea party. We would then choose a lovely table and order our tea. Here, in the land of loneliness and pain?I walked through the doors, and tears came to my eyes. It was a beautiful room, not Victorian, but simple and lovely.I sat down and ordered a pot of tea, a cucumber sandwich, and some scones. It felt silly and wonderful -- and it felt like home. For the first time since moving, I felt as if this new city and state could be, would eventually be, my home. I would come back here and bring new friends. When Stacey visited, we would come here.I lifted my cup and made a silent toast. I toasted Stacey, whom I missed, and I toasted the sweet little tearoom that lessened my pain.29. Beautiful Me explains that self-esteem means how you feel about yourself and what you think your value is as a person."Girls of all ages benefit from recognizing what makes each of us valuable and different," says Kate Tuffy, who helped create Beautiful Me. "Our goal is to offer the program to as many girls as possible across the United States." About 6,000 girls have benefited from it due to her efforts.Beautiful Me organizers train teachers to present the program material to small groups of girls. It includes hands-on art activities, role-playing games about understanding body language and discussions on how to build friendships. Schools and groups present the program when they are ready."The Beautiful Me program helps girls understand their feelings, solve problems and get along better in and out of school. Girls and women who have built healthy levels of self-esteem are more likely to be better friends to others and know how to solve conflicts," says Tuffy.Anna says she has learned all of that from the program. An American university president once said that Einstein had made a new outlook, a new view of the universe. It may be some time before the average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on—but even ordinary man now understand that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.By 1914 young Einstein had been world-famous. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. The great suffering of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.In the year following World War I honors were increasingly put on him. He became head of the Kaiser Whihem Institute of Theoretical Physics. But he himself refused the effort to put him in a position far above other people. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves. These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked:The king of China around 1000 B.C. was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.21.The best title for the passage would beA. She had to rely on freelance(自由撰稿) work for six months after Quality Weekly Magazine folded. The regular salary cheque had always seemed very small, but now it- was like lost riches. She sent manyarticles to other magazines. Sometimes she struck it lucky and got a task. She once wrote a short article of a politician who appreciated her fair-minded approach and gave her some secret information. Her article was noticed by an editor in search of something sharp and fresh. And Nancy was getting a name for sharp comment. In this trade, she saw, you didn't need so much to be up to date with things as ahead of them, lying in wait for circumstance, ready to jump. Then one day she walked into the offices of National Daily. However, she refused to allow the word '"luck". She must have got the job because she was good and experienced. What she never knew was that in fact the editor had been at the point of offering the column to another writer, Alex. When he was about to pick up the phone to call Alex, the colleague he most disliked walked into his office, and spoke with satisfaction of the possibility of closer association with this old friend of his. Which of the following is supported by the "Limitations Theory"?A.Tiredness is caused by signals from brain.B.Athletes feel tired when they use.up all their energy.C.The body uses 100% of the muscle fibres in exercise.D.Athletes become tired though lactic acid levels remain low.33.Noakes has found out that .A.muscle fibres control athletes' movementsB.lactic acid levels remain high in cycling testC.mental processes control the symptoms of tirednessD.different exercises use different amount of muscle fibres34.It is likely that both theories accept that .A.lactic acid is produced in muscles during exerciseB.the oxygen content in blood may rise after sportsC.tiredness is a harmful by-product of exerciseD.the energy in human bodies can be35.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A.The description of a new test.B.The explanation of the theory.C.The puzzling evidence of a study.D.The whole process of the research.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Together they eat in the finest restaurants, traveling everywhere around the world by luxurious planes and pleasure ships. They are models.Do you envy them? What sort of life are models leading? Is it a wonderful life for a young lady or a young man?A few models are well-known actors or actresses who can make a lot of money only by showing themselves off in commercials. But the majority of them are just curious to see what it is like. They’d like to be models just because they are attracted by what they imagine — models earn a lot of money and lead a glorious life. This is true for those who are very successful. However, most models find it difficult to get work. Very few can earn enough to live on, and for all models their expenses are high. Their agents claim about 20% of the earnings, and no model will get very far without a clever agent. Besides, they have to buy good clothing. They also have to pay to travel to interviews and reach the places where the work is to be done.Interviews for a model job are known as cattle-markets in the modeling world, and not without a good reason. A top model can choose his or her work, demand and receive high fees and has his or her expenses paid. But for most models, the situation is quite different. And agent or employer inspects each model much as a farmer inspects cattle at a market. Intelligence, qualifications and personal characteristics count for little against good looks and tight figures. For all except the very few lucky ones, the life of a model is a continual search for work, trying to sell himself or herself in the face of fierce competition and, sometimes, not particularly moral standards on the part of some employers.Immigration officials at airport look suspiciously at a girl whose passport shows her occupation as “Model”, and these are men and women of considerable experience of th e world. It comes no surprise to find that some models prefer to put “Secretary” or “Businessman” as their jobs in their passports.Modeling is a changeable world with great rewards for a tiny minority but not for the majority.21. For models, their good looks and tight figures are _____________, compared with their intelligence and qualifications.A. more importantB. less neededC. less essentialD. more looked down upon22. Which of the following can lead you to believe according to the passage?A. A model’s traveling expenses are usually paid by his employer.B. To be a model, good looks are the most important qualification.C. Most models have a fairly easy way of life with high pay.D. A model can hardly be successful without a good agent.23. Models often put “Secretary” or “Businessman” instead of “Model” in their passports because __________________.A. they want to avoid being stopped to sign their names by fansB. a person with the occupation of a model is easily attacked by black societiesC. models are sometimes looked down uponD. secretaries and businessmen are free of custom duty24. What may be the author’s attitude towards modeling?A. It is a worthwhile life for a young lady or a young man.B. He is in favor of young people to try modeling.C. Before being crazy about a model job, young people should be aware of the difficulties.D. It is a field in which everyone has a great chance to succeed.25. The underlined word “suspiciously” can most probably be replaced by _________________.A. doubtfullyB. excitedlyC. proudlyD. sadlyBln the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animals. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people.I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy. From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others.Often, we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them.Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove moreslowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me, horning (按喇叭) or even shouting at me.At that moment,I decided to do something I had never done in twenty four years of driving.I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed. No more angry shouts and no more horns! When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to the other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood.Several times, I saw dr ivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak. Sometimes situations call for us to act stron g and brave even when we don’t feel that way.But those are few and far between.More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we’re brave when we’re scared.26.The author has discovered that people will feel happy when ________.A.they offer their helpB.they receive others’ helpC.they feel others’ kindnessD.they show their weakness27.The author feels sad sometimes because ________.A.he has a soft heartB.he relies much on othersC.some people pretend to be kindD.some people fail to see the kindness in others28.What did the other drivers do when they saw the flashlights?A.They speeded up to pass.B.They waited with patience.C.They tried their best to help.D.They put on their flashlights too.29.In this passage, the author advises us to ________.A.handle problems by ourselvesB.accept help from othersC.admit our weaknessD.show our bravery30.Which of the following is the best title of this passage?A.A Wheelchair Experience.B.Weakness and Kindness.C.Weakness and Strength.D.A Driving Experience.三.补全对话(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)Can't get out of the office? Another Chinese pop singer, Zhang Jie, won the International Artist Award. But while fans of these singers are thinking highly of the awards and the performance by the Chopsticks Brothers at the AMA celebration as significant, there are others who are less excited. They have questioned the value of the awards and what effect it will have on Chinese culture's "going abroad", claiming it may leave foreign audiences with a poor impression of Chinese pop music, and even Chinese culture. The Little Apple phenomenon, both home and abroad, can be more easily understood and judged if we look at it from a business perspective rather than a cultural perspective. The professional promoters behind the duo have developed a clear strategy to promote the duo and their work, not just this particular song. Little Apple was originally released to promote the duo's film Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon. From the very beginning a viral marketing strategy was used to promote the song, which immediately went viral on the Internet due to its repetitive rhythm, easy-to-remember lyrics, simple and funny dance and, most importantly, grassroots nature. The video accumulated more than 1 billion hits on China's major video website.Although the song was generally dismissed by music professionals who criticized it as musical "junk food", Little Apple's popularity nationally paved the way for promoting the duo internationally.21.The writer’s attitude to the song of Little Apple is ______.A. opposedB. negativeC. objectiveD. critical22. What does the underlined words “the duo” refer to?A. Little AppleB. Chopsticks brothersC. Zhang JieD. American singer23. We can learn from the passage that ______.A. Little Apple's popularity is also a success of marketing strategyB. Little Apple is generally thought worthless by the AMAC. Little Apple is really popular with all people in ChinaD. Little Apple was originally released as a pop song on the InternetBYou know that I like a book if I read the whole thing in less than one day. That’s wha t I did with Hold Smokes, the fourth and last book in Katie MacAlister’s Aisling Grey Guardian series. I’m sometimes a bit worried about the last book in a book series because I’m scared that it might not live up to the previous books. I’m happy to say tha t I was not disappointed with Holy Smokes although I’m quite sad that such an enjoyable series has to come to an end.Hold Smokes picks up where the third book, Light My Fire left off. .Aisling and her dragon friend Drake are still in trouble and the dragon wars are showing no signs of stopping. Aisling is trying her best to keep her secret life , especially from her decidedly normal family. If that’s not enough to stress Aisling out, she’s also trying to plan a wedding. But on the day of the wedding Drake disappears and Aisling does all she can to find her boyfriend. If you haven’t read the three previous books in the Aisling Grey Guardian series, I recommend that you do before you start reading Holy Smokes. Reading it without knowing the back stories of ea ch character will just confuse you, as MacAlister doesn’t do a lot of catch up for new readers. Also, you won’t be able to appreciate how much Aisling’s character has grown. In the first book she was a clueless thief bumbling around and getting conveniently saved by her friends. If you’re new to the series and are not familiar with the events of the previous three books in the Aisling Grey Guardian series, you’ll still be able to appreciate the situational humor in Holy Smokes. I’m a huge fan of the series and I really regret that it had to come to an end.24. How many books did Katie MacAlister plan to write in her Aisling Guardian series?A. Three books.B. Four books.C. Five books.D. Six books.25. We can infer from the first paragraph that .A. the writer likes to read short story booksB. the writer is always satisfied with the last book in a book seriesC. the writer was not at all annoyed about Holy SmokesD. the writer thinks Aisling Grey Guardian series should be ended26. What ha ppens in Aisling’s wedding according to the second paragraph?A. Drake tells Aisling he won’t love her.B. Drake leaves Aisling without a word.C. Drake decides to kill another dragon first.D. Drake decides to find his friend first.27. What does the writer recommend according to the third paragraph?A. Readers should just read Holy Smokes.B. Katie MacAlister should write another book.C. Readers should read the former books before Holy Smokes.D. Readers should stop reading all the books by Katie MacAlister.CMen have long been puzzled by the amount women pack, when they go on holiday. They despair(绝望)as they watch their beloved spend much money on extra baggage charge. Nearly half of these women admitted to lying about the weight of their case to their partner before leaving for the airport, in fear of being made to unload some unnecessary items. But it’s a fact that women pack more than they need. On average, a woman needs around 57 items in suitcase for a two-week holiday, yet most women pack nearer to 150 items, rangingfrom skirts, tops, underwear and high heels. In addition, women pack more sun cream, make-up and hair appliances than they were likely to need. They all take up space in the suitcase, only a third of them will see the light of day once at the holiday place.79 percent of women admitted to taking extra items with them, with the reason for this being “just in case”. Women plan their holiday wardrobe(衣橱)months in advance. Packing enough clothes and o ther items to last a month is not enough for some women. They’d take a chance to shop for new items while holidaying abroad. So they’ll return with even more luggage in their cases.Professor Karen Pine said: “Women are tempted to take familiar items wi th them on holiday, often everything except the kitchen sink. Some people find traveling stressful, particularly when they’re unsure about the home comforts available at their holiday place. They over-pack to help cope with those feelings of stress and red uce the uncertainty.”This will come as no surprise to some men, who are used to trying to squeeze their partner’s luggage into the boot of the car with their own, smaller case. On the other hand, men pack very lightly, with only an average of 40 items for a two-week holiday.28. The best title for the text would be________.A. Women are good at picking holiday suitcase.B. Women over-pack by two third when on holiday.C. Women will go shopping every time they go on holiday.D. Women take good care of themselves while holidaying.29. How many items will a woman pack for a 2-week holiday?A. 57 itemsB.79 itemsC. 97 itemsD. 150 items30. Women pack too much on holiday because_________.A. they want to show off their itemsB. they prefer a more comfortable holidayC. they are afraid they’ll need them during the holidayD. they would like to clean their clothes wardrobe very much31. What do Dr Pine’s words imply?A. Going on holiday will cost a lot.B. Women don’t prefer to go on a holiday.C. People tend to feel tired and stressed on holiday.D. It’s understandable that women over-pack in a sense.DNowadays it is common that people are buying more products and services than ever before through the Internet, so do Americans. And experts say the popularity of online sales is likely to spread to other countries. Online sales now represent as much as 10% of all retail sales in the United States. This has led traditional stores to seek new ways to keep their customers loyal.Taking Lynne for example, she made good use of the Internet. she used the Internet to buy everything she needed for her Wedding and holiday gifts for her husband and stepdaughter. Other than food, 90% of her purchases were made on her home computer. “I find that, by being able to go online, choose the things that I need, and have them delivered to me right at my doorstep, I eliminate all the driving, all the crowds, all the noise of that, and I usually get a better selection.”There are a lot of people like her. Experts say American online shopping hit records in both November and December. 57% of Americans have bought something electronically. Store owners worry that this growing amount of online sales will hurt their business. Cornell University marketing professor Ed Melaughlin says they can keep their customers by selling goods like clothing, which buyers may want to see and try on before purchasing. The stores could also offer things that are difficult to ship. Besides, some stores can please customers by offering to repair electronic products.Bill Martin is the founder of Shopper Trak. His business helps stores learn about their customers. He said, “There is still a lot of emotion in the b uying decision, you know, that takesplace. Often you need that last sense of “Boy, this is exactly what I want before you are ready to part with money, and you can't always get that online. It's a rather cold process.”While e-commerce worries some business owners, the only worry for delivery services is keeping up with the number of packages. UPS manager Dana Kline says her company is very busy at this time of the year.UPS is so busy that it has filled 55,000 temporary work positions during the holiday season.32. The purpose of this passage is to tell us ________.A. the challenge online owners are faced withB. the difference between online sales and traditional salesC. the challenge e-commerce causes to traditional salesD. the trouble that customers often meet when purchasing online33. The example of Lynne is mentioned in the passage to show________.A. online sales will replace traditional sales sooner or laterB. online business has changed many Americans' lifeC. traditional stores can't offer enough food to their customersD. traditional stores find new ways to keep their customers loyal34. The underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by “________”.A. includeB. decreaseC. avoidD. discourage35. It is implied in Bill Martin's words that ________.A. store owners should learn more about their customersB. traditional stores can provide goods to buyers more quicklyC. some owners are using websites to persuade people to visit their storesD. traditional stores offer a social experience that some people enjoy第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文的内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项5 Ways Pets Improve Your HealthPets help relieve stress____36_____A powerful hormone(荷尔蒙) is released when you look at your companion animal, which brings feelings of joy.
