Social Background
After
the death of Charles I, there followed the split within the revolutionary camp. (the petty bourgeoisie, represented by the Levellers and the bourgeoisie and the poor peasants, represented by the Diggers). In the end, the bourgeoisie won the victory and Cromwell became the protector of the English Commonwealth.
That
age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer; But being spent, the worse and worst Times still succeed the former.
Then be not coy, but use your time, and while ye may, go marry; For having lost just once your prime, You may for ever tarry.
Puritanism:
It was the religious doctrine of the revolutionary bourgeoisie during the English Revolution. It preached thrift, sobriety(清醒), hard work and unceasing labor in whatever calling but with no extravagant enjoyment of the fruits of labor. Two representatives of the puritan writers: Milton & Bunyan

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old time is still a-flying, And this same flower that smiles today, To-morrow will be dying. The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun, The higher he's a-getting, The sooner will his race be run, And nearer he's to setting.

They
treated life cavalierly and sometimes treated poetic convention cavalierly too. They wrote their poems in direct and colloquial language and graceful, melodious, polished diction and meter. Their style and tone are witty and light. The theme they often used is love, war, loyalty to the king and carpe diem meaning seizing the day.
17th Century
The period of the English Bourgeois Revolution
Social Background
During the Tudor Dynasty(1485-1603),the English bourgeoisie lived in harmony with the crown. They have the common interest in facing both their internal and external foes: struggles against Spain, against the Roman Catholic Church, against the noble houses ruining the country with their civil wars. However, after that, there arose the great clashes between the monarchy and the bourgeoisie. Thus there came the civil war and Charles I was executed in 1649, which meant that Monarchy was abolished. England was declared a commonwealth, i.e. a republic.
SONG TO CELIA I sent thee late a rosy wreath, Not so much honoring thee As giving it a hope that there It could not wither'd be. But thou thereon didst only breathe, And sent'st it back to me; Since when it grows, and smells,I swear, Not of itself but thee.
Richard Lovelace, model cavaliers
Tell me not, Sweet, I am unkind, That from the nunnery Of thy chaste breasts, and quiet mind To war and arms I fly --To Lucasta, Going to the Wars Stone walls do not a prison make; Nor iron bars a cage: Minds innocent and quiet take That for an hermitage If I have freedom in my love, And in my soul am free, Angles alone, that soar above, Enjoy such liberty. --To Althea, from Prison
Drink to me only with thine eyes, And I will pledge with mine; Or leave a kiss but in the cup, And I'll not look for wine. The thirst that from the soul doth rise Doth ask a drink divine; But might I of Jove's nectar sup, I would not change for thine.
Jonson’s comedies are “comedies of humors”
A
“humor” is a predominant peculiarity of a certain person, which determines his behavior, thoughts and manner of speech. Every character in Jonson’s comedies personifies a definite “humor.”
English Revolution:1642-1649, Cromwell reigns and monarchy was abolished and England became a commonwealth. The Restoration: In 1660, after Cromwell’s death, the Parliament recalled Charles and the Restoration period began. Glorious Revolution: In 1688, James II was expelled and William, Prince of Orange, from Holland, was invited and became the King.
