(12~16/共10题)ComprehensionDirections:
Read the following two texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mistakes are the things that nobody wants, but we still make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. Some are about work or jobs. But most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?" "When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?" "And why didn´t Andy pick up that I was friendly just because 1 had a car?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it´s too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. We need to listen and think for some time. And if we don´t really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "You´re a lucky dog" that´s being friendly. But "lucky dog"? There´s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn´t see it himself. But bringing in the "dog" bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn´t think you deserve your luck. "Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for" is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn´t important. It´s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven´t got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone´s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

Read the texts from a magazine article in which five people talk about tipping in a restaurant. For questions 36-40, match the name of each person to one of the statements (A-G) given below. Jack
Every time you raise a hot-button issue, such as the in-laws or money, does your husband suddenly clam up? Take heart, more than 80 percent of the time, it"s the wife who brings up sticky marital issues, while the husband tries to avoid discussing them. This isn"t a symptom of a troubled marriage-it is true in most happy marriages.
Lilian
I watched many couples fight about one major issue. After four years , 69 percent of these successfully married couples were still fighting about the same problem. When you marry, you automatically inherit your set of unresolvable relationship problems. If you married somebody else, you"d have a different set.
Patrick
You"ll often hear that staying in a bad marriage is worse for everybody concerned-that getting divorced. That may be true if your home is so riddled with hostility it"s like a war zone. But I found that 75 percent of couples who rated their marriages as miserable but stayed married were happy five years later.
Brandy
Every couple experiences disappointment as initial romance and passion fade and they discover all their differences. He doesn"t do enough housework. She"s too emotional. He watches too much TV. She"s too lenient with the kids. We usually think the strongest marriages are those that survive major traumas, but frequently, it is those daily annoyances that eat away at a marriage. Anthony
What if she is in corporate sales and he is a musician? She prizes safety and security while he longs for adventure? She loves watching football at home while he is a rover with a passion for sailing? Less resilient couples might see such dramatic differences as grounds for divorce. But paradoxically, it is this unbridled independence that holds marriage together.
Now match each of the persons with the appropriate statement.
Note: there are two extra statements.
Statements
A. Deal with little things.
B. Silence doesn"t spell trouble.
C. Take a leap of faith.
D. Divorce is not the best solution.
E. We don"t have to solve every problem.
F. Relive beautiful moments.

Read the text below. Write an essay in about 120 words, in which you should summarize the key points of the text and make comments on them. Try to use your own words.
More and more people are getting married on May 20 than on Valentine"s Day.
Marriage centers around China saw a very busy day yesterday, as unmarried couples lined up as early as 5 am to tie the knot. The date—520, sounds similar to "wo ai ni", or "I love you" in Chinese.
Take Shanghai for example, 3919 couples got their marriage certificates—about 10 times the usual daily figure. And in Suzhou, 2357 couples tied the knot, easily surpassing the number on Valentine"s Day.
While most people can appreciate the romantic connotations behind the special date, some men moan that there are too many days to remember in a year.
Chen Chengfeng, who has been married for about two years, says he has at least five "important occasions" to celebrate every year.
"My wife"s birthday, Valentine"s Day, our wedding anniversary, May 20 and the day when we started dating. This is so crazy. It is a torture for men. It makes me nervous every time as I have to think what presents to buy. Besides, it is a costly affair."
Sample of comments on Weibo: @skyice001: Why jump on the bandwagon? Marriage is a private matter. There"s no need to follow suit and get married on the same day as everybody else! @flourish163: I think making an effort to be extra romantic on a certain day is a good thing. And it"s not just for the young people. I got married a long time ago, and I still feel happy to see others celebrate this "I Love You" day!

Read the text below. Write an essay in about 120 words, in which you should summarize the key points of the text and make comments on them. Try to use you own words. You might think that good-looking men have every advantage in life. But new study suggests being handsome may not always work in a man´ s favour—at least when it comes to his career. The research claims that attractive men are less likely to be given a job in a competitive workplace because they intimidate bosses. "It´ s not always an advantage to be pretty," says Marko Pitesa, an assistant professor at the University of Maryland. ´´It can backfire if you are perceived as a threat. " Interestingly, in Pitesa´ s study, it was male attractiveness in particular, rather than female beauty, that made the most difference. If the interviewer expected to work with the candidate as part of a team, then he preferred goodlooking men. However, if the interviewer saw the candidate as a potential competitor, the interviewer discriminated in favour of unattractive men. The results suggest that interviewers were not blinded by beauty, and instead calculated which candidate would further their own career. "The dominant theoretical perspective in the social sciences for several decades has been that biases and discrimination are caused by irrational prejudice," Pitesa says. "The way we explain it here, pretty men just seem more competent, so it is actually subjectively rational to discriminate for or against them. " On a deeper level, she adds,
the behaviour remains irrational, since there´ s no evidence that a real link exists between looks and competence.
