AEveryone has got two personalities – the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don’t show your secret personality when you’re awake be cause you can control your behavior, but when you’re asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, people frequently change their position. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.If you go to sleep on your back, you’re a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don’t like to upset people, so you never express your real feelings. You’re quite shy and you aren’t very confident. If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive person. You worry a lot and you’re always easily upset. You’re very stubborn (顽固的) ,but you aren’t very ambitious. You usually live for today not for tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.If you sleep on curled up, you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you’re often defensive. You’re shy and you don’t normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You’re easily hurt.If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strengths and weakness. You’re usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don’t often get depressed. You always say what you think even if it annoys people.56. According to the writer, you naturally show your secret and real personality _______.A. only in a normal nightB. only when you go to sleepC. only when you refuse to show yourself to the worldD. only when you change sleeping position57. Maybe you don’t want to make friends with a person who sleeps curled up. Why?A. He or she would rather be alone than communicate with you.B. He or she is rarely ready to help you.C. He or she prefers staying at home to going out.D. He or she wouldn’t like to get help from you.58. It appears that the writer tends to think highly of the person who sleeps on one side because ______A. he or she always shows sympathy for peopleB. he or she is confident, but not stubbornC. he or she has more strengths than weaknessD. he or she often considers annoying peopleBChinese are very generous (慷慨) when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they willeither learn a musical instrument or ballet(芭蕾舞), or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter. However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.Parents can see that th eir children’s skills vary, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence (自信).The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence.Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse(唤起)his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.59. Parents in China, according to this passage, _______.A. are too strict with their childrenB. are too rich to educate their childrenC. have some problems in educating their children correctlyD. are too poor to educate their children60. The writer of the passage does not seem to be satisfied with ______.A. the parents’ ideas of educating their childrenB. the education systemC. children’s skillsD. children’s hobbies61. Doing some cooking at home helps children ______.A. learn how to serve their parentsB. learn how to become strong and fatC. benefit from it and prepare themselves for the futureD. make their parents believe that they are clever62. According to the last paragraph we can conclude that ______.A. broken radios and television sets are usefulB. one’s curiosity may be useful for his later lifeC. an engineer must fix many broken radiosD. a good student should spend much time repairing radiosCWhen other nine-year-old kids were playing games, she was working at a petrol station. Whenother teens were studying or going out, she struggled to find a place to sleep on the street. But she overcame these terrible setbacks to win a highly competitive scholarship(奖学金)and gain entry to Harvard University. And her amazing story has inspired a movie, “Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story”, shown in late April.Liz Murray, a 22-year-old American girl, has been writing a real-life story of willpower and determination. Liz grew up in the shadow of two drug-addicted(吸毒)parents. There was never enough food or warm clothes in the house. Liz was the only member of the family who had a job. Her mother had AIDS and died when Liz was just 15 years old. The effect of that loss became a turning point in her life. Connecting the environment in which she had grown up with how her mother had died, she decided to do something about it.Liz went back to school. She threw herself into her studies, never telling her teachers that she was homele ss. At night, she lived on the streets. “What drove me to live on had something to do with understanding, by understanding that there was a whole other way of being. I had only experienced a small part of the society,” she wrote in her book Breaking Night. She admitted that she used envy to drive herself on. She used the benefits that come easily to others, such as a safe living environment, to encourage herself that “next to nothing could hold me down”. She finished high school in just two years and won a full scholarship to study at Harvard University. But Liz decided to leave her top university a couple of months earlier this year in order to take care of her father, who has also developed AIDS. “I love my parents so much. They are drug addicts. But I ne ver forget that they love me all the time.”Liz wants moviegoers to come away with the idea that changing your life is “as simple as making a decision”.63. In which order did the following things happen to Liz?a. Her mother died of AIDS.b. She worked at a petrol station.c. She got admitted into Harvard.d. The movie about her life was put on.e. She had trouble finding a place to sleep.A. b, a, e, c, dB. a, b, c, e, dC. e, d, b, a, cD. b, e, a, d, c64. The main idea of the passage is ________.A. how Liz managed to enter Harvard UniversityB. what a hard time Liz had in her childhoodC. why Liz loved her parents so muchD. how Liz struggled to change her life65. What actually made her go towards her goal?A. Envy and encouragement.B. Willpower and determination.C. Decisions and understanding.D. Love and respect for her parents.66. When she wrote “What drove me to live on...I had only experienced a small part of the society”, she meant that ________.A. she had little experience of social lifeB. she could hardly understand the societyC. she would do something for her own lifeD. she needed to travel more around the worldDWind—even the slightest of winds can prevent frost (霜冻).That’s because wind is like a spoon in your cup of tea: it stirs (搅起)things down and brings down a lot of warm air that often floats just above housetops and trees .It may seem strange , but ice itself sometimes can protect crops from frost . Some growers actually spray their crops with water on a freezing night . Water freezes quickly on plants and then a strange thing happens . As long as ice stays wet , it can’t get colder than 32°F, a temperaure many plants can stand . By continual spraying water on the ice , the growers keep it from going below 32 degrees even if the air is much colder . This may defeat frost and saves plants .This strange kind of “ice blanket” works only on plants that are strong enough to stand the weight of frozen spray . This is used even to protect banana plants on some Central American farms . 67.If the ice became entirely frozen and dry , suppose what might happen .A.The plants might be frozen to death . B.The plants might benefit from it .C.It might save the plants . D.It might make the plants grow slowly .68.Ice can save plants rather than destroy them on condition that they are .A.sprayed regularly B.quickly frozen C.not strong enough D.used to frost69.The best title would be .A.Frost Saves crops B.Ice Battle C.Ice Can Be Nice D.Ice Is Good70.In which of the following sentences “stand” has the same meaning as in the last paragraph ?A.He could hardly stand . B.This house stands the test of time .C.The train stood for an hour . D.He stands in terrible danger .ESuppose a key man in your firm had just met with a terrible accident. 2010年高考英语阅读理解专项测试题

2010年高考英语阅读理解专项测试题

2010年高考英语阅读理解专项测试题Everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older, but men's minds decline more than women's, according to the results of a worldwide survey. Certain differences seem to be inherent in male and female brains: Men are better at maintaining and dealing with mental images (useful in mathematical reasoning and spatial skills), while women tend to excel (擅长) at recalling information from their brain's files (helpful with language skills and remembering the locations of objects). Many studies have looked for a connection between sex and the amount of mental decline (衰退) people experience as they age, but the results have been mixed. Some studies found more age-related decline in men than in women, while others saw the opposite or even no relationship at all between sex and mental decline. Those results could be improper because the studies involved older people, and women live longer than men: The men tested are the survivors, "so they're the ones that may not have shown such cognitive decline," said study team leader Elizabeth of the University of Warwick in England. People surveyed completed four tasks that tested sex-related cognitive skills: matching an object to its rotated form, matching lines shown from the same angle, typing as many words in a particular category (范畴) as possible in the given time, e.g. "object usually colored gray", and recalling the location of objects in a line drawing. The first two were tasks at which men usually excel; the latter are typically dominated by women. Within each age group studied, men and women performed better in their separate categories on average. And though performance declined with age for both genders, women showed obviously less decline than men overall.1. The underlined word in the second paragraph means_________.A. naturalB. greatC. obviousD. absolute 2. According to thepassage, which of the following can Not be typed into the same category? A. cloud B. sheep C. trees D. goose 3. Which of the following statements is true according the article? A. Men do better than women when it comes to learning English. B. Women stand out at remembering people’s names. C. Men excel at typing as many words in a particular category as possible in the given time. D. Women excel at dealing mathematic problems. 4. One important factor that affects the correctness of the results is that _________. A. the old men tested may not have shown such cognitive decline B. people surveyed are all old C. people taking part in this test came from all over the world D. women live longer than men 5. The author aims to tell us that__________. A. women’s minds perform better than men’s B. men’s minds decline more with age C. everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older D. a survey on human’s mind decline was done recently 参考答案与解析: 1、答案为A。

Directions: Read the following passage and complete the sentences or answer the questions according to the information given in the passage you have just read.I was only ten, but Mom couldn’t put off the Talk any longer. “I think,” she began, “that you should start investing some of that money you have saved.”Does a ten-year-old child really need to know the financial facts of life? As immigrants with little money, my parents were convinced that the time to teach children about investment building was as early as possible. They wanted my brother and me to get a head start on that long road to financial stability. Two years earlier my parents had helped me open my first bank account, and now my mother was introducing me to mutual funds. An enthusiastic pupil, I was soon contributing income from my paper route towards my investments. Then, later, as a high-school student with university on the horizon, I began to wonder how I could possibly afford the $2,200-a-year tuition. I had decided to major in sciences, with the aim of going on to medical school. In other words, there were a lot of years of tuition ahead of me.Clearly, it was time to step up my investing planning. I read investment magazines carefully and thoroughly for money-making advice. My comfort level grew, as did my investment. At the end of high school, I was able to pay for my university tuition. In fact, the proceeds of that investment supported me much of the way through medical school.Since Mom’s first chat nearly two decades ago,I have come a long way as an investor. Above all, I have seen firsthand how smart investing can help you reach important goals in life. It’s partly thanks to the good financial habits I picked up as a child that I’m enjoying a medical residency on Edmonto n today----thanks, in other words, to my money-wise Mom and Dad.1.When the writer’s parents opened his first bank account, the writer __________ years old?2.The time when the writer could afford his university tuition was _______________________.3.Why did t he writer’s mother encourage the writer to learn to invest?4.What did the writer learn from the investment?Directions: Read the following passage and complete the sentences or answer the questions according to the information given in the passage you have just read.Thirty-two people watched Kitty Brown being killed beneath their windows. She was their neighbor. Yet none of them helped her. Not one even called the police. Was this inhuman cruelty? Was it lack of feeling about one’s fellow men?“ Not so.” Say scientists John Darley and Bibb Fatane. These men went beyond the headlines to prove the reasons why people didn’t act. They found that a person has to go through two steps before he can help. First he has to notice that there is an emergency.Suppose you see a middle-aged man fall down to the sidewalk. Is he having a heart attack? Or is he about to sleep off a drunk. Is the smoke coming into the room from a leak in the air conditioning? Is it “Steam pipes”? or is it really smoke from a fire? It’s not always easy to tell if you are faced with a real emergency.Second , and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel personally responsible. He must feel that he must help or the person won’t get the help he needs. The rese archers found a lot depends on how many people are around. They had college students in to be “tested”. Some came alone. Some came in large groups. The receptionist started them off on the “test”. Then she went into the next room. A curtain divided the “testing room” and the room which she wanted. Soon the students heard the scream, the noise of file cabinets falling and a cry for help. All of this had been pre-recorded and on a tape-recorder.Eight out of ten students taking the test alone acted to help. Of the students in pairs, only two out ten helped. Of the students in groups, none helped.1. When the students in the “test” heard the “scream” or “the “cry for help”. The ones who most often acted were those _________________________________________________________.2. What are the two steps before he can help?3. In what circumstances didn’t the “tested” students act to help?4. The main purpose of this passage proves the reasons __________________________________when they saw or heard someone facing danger.Section DDirections: Read the following passage and complete the sentences or answer the questions according to the information given in the passage you have just read.Being able to multitask—doing several things at the same time—is considered as a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again. What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle an ever larger number of electronic devices(电子产品)as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a significant amount of time in fruitless efforts as they multitask.Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people around them always wear an earphone or headphone in the ear or on the head, listening to music , or playing video games on mobile phones, they can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.Multitasking also affects young people’s performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinion of the effect of modern gadgets (器具) on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive response (反应). However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not quite as positive. Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later development of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary for them to learn special skills to do their work.1. The underlined wo rd “juggle” in Paragraph 2 most probably means ______________________2. By saying multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members, the author implies that young people ______________________.3. What do the young people think of multitasking?4. They think it has no bad effect on their work when the multitask..4.It has a serious effect on later development of study skills./ Multitasking is harmful to young people’s developmentSectionDDirections: Read the following passage and complete the sentences or answer the questions according to the information given in the passage you have just read.China faces a new problem with the tainted milk that has sickened babies and damaged public confidence: how to dispose (处理) of polluted stuff. Tens of thousands of tons of milk containing melamine ( 三聚氢胺) has been pulled from shelves since September. The Health Ministry has not released a total figure for the amount of impure dairy products recalled and how much has been destroyed. But last month alone, more than 32,000 tons were disposed of in Hebei province, according to Xinhua news agency.Local governments now face the huge and costly problem of safely disposing of the products. Since many people doubted the government’s food safety standards, Beijing has issued new guidelines on how to destroy the polluted products. The government’s advice: to burn or to bury.It recommends burning the milk in large-capacity stoves or, if such facilities are not available, burying small amounts in landfills--- as long as local environmental departments approve. Burning or burying breaks down melamine and neutralizes its poison, said a Geneva-based scientist at the WHO’s food safety department. But both methods do not come cheap. Burning the tainted milk costs about US$100 a ton, said an official in Beijing. Putting the milk in landfills is cheaper---about US$29 a ton ---thought there are limits on how much can be buried each day.mixing the tainted milk into cement bricks and even coal. At a factory in the southern city of Guangzhou, tainted milk powder was burned, then mixed into cement, said Guangzhou’s food safety office director. At a power plant in Qingdao, some eight tons of tainted milk powder was poured into a towering pile of coal, which was then burned to generate electricity. Despite the guidelines on proper disposal of the tainted milk, there have been violations. In Guangzhou, the local government took over responsibility for disposal after a garbage company poured tainted milk in to the city river, causing concerns among residents about the safety of water supply. The company was fined US$29,000.1.The government’s advice on disposing of the tainted milk is __________________________.2.What is the disadvantage of the method of burning and burying. And what is the advantage of it?3.How does the city of Qingdao deal with the tainted milk powder?4.The passage mainly talking about the problem of __________________________________.Keys1.to burn or to bury2.disadvantage: expensive / not cheapadvantage: can break down melamine and neutralize the poison.3.By burning it with coal to generate power.of how to dispose of the tainted milk.控江中学吴芳自2010年始,上海英语高考卷新增了题型,在阅读理解“仔细阅读”中增加了“简答题”部分,4道题,分值8分。

2010年高考英语上海阅读理解新题型复习5

The traditional tent cities at festivals such as Glastonbury may never be the same again. In a victory of green business that is certain to appeal to environmentally-aware music-lovers, a design student is to receive financial support to produce eco-friendly tens made of cardboard that can be recycled after the bands and the crowds have gone home.Major festivals such as Glastonbury throw away some 10,000 abandoned tents at the end of events each year. For his final year project at the University of the West of England, James Dunlop came up with a material that can be recycled. And to cope with the British summer, the cardboard has been made waterproof.Taking inspiration from a Japanese architect, who has used cardboard to make big buildings including churches, Mr Dunlop used cardboard material for his tents, which he called Myhabs. The design won an award at the annual New Designers Exhibition after Mr Dunlop Graduated from his product design degree and he decided to try to turn it into a business. To raise money for the idea, he toured the City’s private companies which fund new businesses and found a supporter in the finance group Mint. He introduced his idea to four of Mint’s directors and won their support. Mint has committed around £500,000 to MyHab and taken a share of 30 per cent in Mr Dunlop’s business. The first Myhabs should be tested at festivals this summer, before being marketed fully next year.Mr Dunlop said that the design, which accommodates two people, could have other uses, such as for disaster relief and housing for the London Olympics. For music events, the cardboard houses will be ordered online and put up at the sites by the Myhab team before the festival-goers arrive and removed by the company afterwards, They can be Personalized and the company will offer reductions on the expense if people agree to sell exterior (外部的)advertising space. The biggest festivals attract tens of thousands of participants, with Glastonhury having some 150,000 each year. Altogether there are around 100 annual music festivals where people camp in the UK. The events are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious.1.“Eco-friendly tents” in paragraph 1 refer to tents ___________________ . 2.Mr Dunlop established his business by cooperating with _____________ . 3.How many people can stay in a tent designed by Mr. Dunlop? .4.Why did James Dunlop design eco-friendly tents? .Answers:1.favorable to the environmentOr: made of cardboard that can be recycled2.a finance group3.Two people4.To appeal to / arouse music-lovers’ environmental consciousnessAmericans use the term "college students" to mean students either in colleges or universities. Not only that, Americans almost never say "going off to university" or "when I was in university." That sounds British. Instead, they say "going off to college" and "when I was in college."College, university: what's the difference? We answer that this week in part three of our Foreign Student Series on American higher education.Colleges and universities have many things in common. Both offer undergraduate degrees in the arts and sciences, for example. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living. But many colleges do not offer graduate studies. Another difference is that universities are generally bigger. They offer more programs and do more research.Another place of higher education, especially in technical areas, is an institute, like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Yet even an institute of technology can offer a wide choice of programs and activities. M.I.T. says that seventy-five percent of freshmen come there with a strong interest and involvement in the arts.Modern universities developed from those of Europe in the Middle Ages. The word "university" came from the Latin universitas, describing a group of people organized for a common purpose."College" came from collegium, a Latin word with a similar meaning. In England, colleges were formed to provide students with places to live. Usually each group was studying the same thing. So college came to mean an area of study. The first American universities divided their studies into a number of areas and called each one a college. This is still true.A college can also be a part of a university. For example, Harvard College is the undergraduate part of Harvard University.Programs in higher learning can also be called schools, like a school of engineering or a medical school within a college or university. You know, learning all these terms is an education in itself.Answer the questions with no more than 15 words.1.Two things that a colleage and a university have in common are that ___________________They both offer undergradate degrees and help young people to earn a living2.What are the four places of higher education? The college, university, school and institute.3.What did the word “university” originally mean?A group of people organized for a common purpose.4.What is the main idea of this passage? An introduction to the places of American higher education.(or) what is the difference between a college and a university. Many people write to newspapers and magazines to express their opinions. Letters to the editor must carry the writer full name, address and telephone number, although the information is not necessary for publication. This requirement to provide personal particulars is a clear indication that writers are held responsible for what they say. When a writer wants his voice heard, he needs to claim ownership of his voice. Responsibility is the name of the game.“People today prefer living together to putting their signatures on a marriage certificate because they refuse to accept responsibility for the relationship,” said social worker Ken Yip, “and this is what i s causing a lot of family problems.” When we sign a paper, for example, a business contract or a bank document, the signature is symbol of consent, an agreement to take the matter seriously. Most governments and many organizations will not process writer’s complaints if they do not bear the writer’s signature. The absence of a signature, they explain, tells us that the writer cannot be too serious and therefore does not deserve a reply. There are people who wish to remain anonymous(匿名的)for various reasons. Multi-billionaire Mr. King donates generously to charity several times a year. He gives simplybecause he wants to help but not for the publicity his donations may bring, and he does not want his good deeds to make news. In other cases, people insist on anonymity because they are afraid of the consequences of revealing their identity. Crime witnesses may be willing to assist the police, but most are unwilling to give their names when reporting a crime.Name or no name? The answer is very personal and lies in how much we want to get involved. We all have a name, it is a matter if responsibility to it when we make a statement, a claim or an accusation. We all want to honour our own name, and it is only by stamping our expression of an opinion with our own name that we honour what we say.(Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 15 WORDS)1. What does the writer mean by saying “Responsibility is the name of the game”?2. The second paragraph shows that a paper without a signature __________.3. Some people donating generously don’t want their names known because they are__________4. Why is it hard to say that we should name or no name?Key:1. It means names are required to indicate writers’ responsibility f or what they say.2. may not deserve a reply3. unwilling to let his good deeds to make news4. The answer is very personal and lies in how much we want to get involved.。

As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of. expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did expressions,”Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less. ”In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. An apprenticeship is a form of on-the-job training that combines workplace experience and classroom learning. It can last anywhere from one to six years, but four years is typical for most. An apprentice spends the majority of the time in a workplace environment learning the practical skills of a career from a journeyman– someone who has done the job for many years. The rest of the apprentice's time is spent in a classroom environment learning the theoretical skills the career requires. Being an apprentice is a full-time undertaking. One of the advantages of apprenticeship is that it does not cost apprentices anything. The companies that hire them pay for school. What’s more, it offers apprentices an “earn while you learn” opportunity. They u sually start out at half the pay of a journeyman, and the pay increases gradually as they move further along in the job and studies. Near the end of the apprenticeship, their wages are usually 90 percent of what a journeyman would receive. Apprenticeship also pays off for employers. It can offer employers a pool of well-trained workers to draw from.Despite the advantages, apprentices are usually required to work during the day and attend classes at night, which leaves little time for anything else. Sometimes, they might be laid off(下岗 if business for the employers is slow.Once they have completed the apprenticeship and become journeymen, they receive a nationally recognized and portable certification and their pay also increases again. Some journeymen continue employment with the companies they apprenticed with; others go on to different companies or become self-employed contractors. Indeed ,for many of the poorest regions(地区)of the world, it remains the next big thing——finally becomes globally available. And that is a good thing, because the TV revolution is changing lives for the better.Across the developing world, around 45% of families had a TV in 1995; by 2005 the number had climbed above 60%. That is some way behind the U. S. ,where there are more TVs than people, and where people now easily get access to the Internet. Five million more families in sub-Saharan Africa will get a TV over the next five years. In 2005 , after the fall of the Taliban(塔利班),which had outlawed TV, I in 5 Afghans had one. The global total is another 150 million by 2013——pushing the numbers to well beyond two thirds of families.Television’s most powerful effect will be on the lives of women. In India, researchers Robert Jensen and Emily Oster found that when TVs reached villages, women were more likely to go to the market without their husbands approval and less likely to want a boy rather than a girl. They were more likely to make decisions over child health care. TV is also a powerful medium for adult education. However, shoppers are still laying stress on environmental concerns.while more than a quarter say that they are now even better aware of the environmental effect on what they buy. This may help to influence how shops store goods on their shelves. And the companies should still make efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Two out of three people think it is important to buy from environmentally responsible companies, with about one in seven saying that they had even decided to take their custom elsewhere if they felt a company’s environmental reputation was not good enough.Harry Morrison, chief executive(主管)of the Carbon Trust, sympathizes:“I understand this situation where survival is very important now. But from environmentalconsiderations, the clock is ticking—we don’t have much time. In addition, cutting carbon has an immediate effect as costs drop and a medium-term benefit for the brand. ”Larger companies have an extra motivation to look at reducing their carbon footprint, as new rules next year will require businesses to buy carbon allowances to make up for their emissions(排放). Those that have taken early action will have a head start. More than two thirds of consumers are not clear about which companies are environmentally responsible. This suggests that firms that are able to relay clearly their message to the public will be in a pole position to attract shoppers. The Carbon Trust believes that it can help by informing customers about the good work companies are doing. “When companies are granted(授予)the standard, they can use a logo(标识)in all their marketing which makes it clear that they are working towards cutting emissions,”Mr. Morrison said. 64.
