AIn 2017, Amanda Gorman, then 19, was named the first National Youth Poet Laureate. She spoke with TFK’s Brian McGrath about poetry in her life.Has poetry always been a part of your life?I began writing songs when I was 5. When I got to middle school, I said to myself, “Amanda, you can’t sing at all.” But it seemed that the songs I was writing were actually poems. I began changing from music to poetry and spoken word. What has poetry done for you?Poetry allows me to choose my own voice. I have spent a lot of time writing prose (散文) stories. But they never felt like my own voice unless they played with rhythm (韵律), and connected different types of images the way my poems do. Often when I read my prose out loud, someone would say, “You know, that was a great poem.”How did you start out as a youth leader? My mom is an English teacher. She is very enthusiastic about what poetry can do in the classroom. She’d bring me into her classroom to lead poetry workshops (讲习班). That’s how I developed my skills in teaching. How did this work grow? When I was 16, I started an organization called One Pen One Page. The website is a place where students from around the world can tell their stories. And we help schools across the country teach poetry workshops. Every year, we hold a Write On! symposium (研讨会), which is all about using rhythm and the spoken word to effect social change within the community.Have you found kids to be enthusiastic poets?Kids bring a new type of energy to poetry. They want to write about anything under the sun. And they come to poetry without limitations about what it can be.21. In what way did poetry help Gorman?A. It gave her a voice.B. It led her to write prose.C. It made her become world-famous.D. It encouraged her to start singing.22. What can be learned about One Pen One Page?A. It works to collect stories worldwide.B. It develops poetic education at school.C. It presents a number of social problems.D. It was set up by Gorman and her mother.23. How does Gorman look at kids’ poems?A. They are quite childish.B. They are limited in numbers.C. They are sunny and humorous.D. They are free and imaginative.BLast year, eight-year-old Trisha Rao was worried about her upcoming school exams, so she turned to poetry to help work through her feelings and give herself confidence as she prepared fo r the tests. “It was a good way to make me stay calm,” Rao says. While listening to the news with her father, Rao learned about the war in Syria. Conditions in the country were tough, and many people were leaving for safer areas. “I was sad that they lost their homes and some of them lost their family,” Rao said.It made Rao think. If the poem she had written the night before her test had given her hope, maybe it could do the same for the refugee (难民) children. Rao worked on her poem and turned it into a book called Believe in Yourself with the help of her family and friends. It follows the tales (故事) of Sunshine the pup (小狗) (based on Rao’s real-life Cocker Spaniel of the same name) and Papa Dog. Each page presents alesson on topics such as overcoming difficulties, working hard, and of course, believing in one’s self.“I feel that the Syrian refugee children need to hear a message of hope,” she says. “I’m happy that I was able to write this book and share this message with them.”The refugee children have accepted Rao’s encouraging message so enthusiastically that the Istanbul Centre for Support to Life has begun translating Rao’s book into Arabic so they’ll be able to read it in their own language.Believe in Yourself has also earned Rao a prize from the Independent Publishers Book Awards for Best Children’s eBook. In order to get Believe in Yourself into the hands of as many children as possible, Rao and her family have promised to donate (捐赠) a copy of the book to a refugee child for every copy sold.24. How did poetry affect Rao when she was eight?A. It helped her believe in herself.B. It broadened her outlook on life.C. It offered her enthusiasm and skills.D. It made her achieve excellent grades.25. What can we learn about Believe in Yourself ?A. It discusses a variety of refugee problems.B. It was completely finished by Rao herself.C. It aims to encourage refugee children.D. It was based on Rao’s own story.26. How did the public react to Rao’s book?A. They had doubts about it.B. They thought highly of it.C. They had mixed opinions on it.D. They were unconcerned about it.27. What is the best title for the text?A. A Lesson from a GirlB. The Pleasure of GivingC. Sharing Hope with RefugeesD. Exploring the Well-being of RefugeesCEvery time author Alex Brown has released (发行) a book I have wasted no time in jumping straight in. I have always been honest about not being a fan of short stories as I have found them to be lacking in depth for me but when I saw that Alex Brown was bringing out a short story named Not Just for Christmas set in her much loved village of Tindledale I knew there was no way I could miss out on another visit to the village. The main character in this short story is Kitty who appeared in the previous Tindledale books running her café The Spotted Pig Café. Kitty is a single mother of the lovely little Teddie after her husband died a true hero. Kitty and Teddie have adapted to life but then Kitty receives a phone call from Mack who was her husband’s best friend, with news that her husband’s dog Monty has been retired and needs a home. Will Monty bring everlasting love to the family or will he bring up too many memories for Kitty?I am over the moon that this bo ok focuses on Kitty’s story as she is a character who has touched my heart in the Tindledale books and I have really wanted the author to explore her character more. The storyline is very moving but also uplifting too with a lovely touch of celebration. This is the first short story I have read where the author has managed to put all of the feeling of a full length novel into a short story. The characters are well developed and soon work their way into your heart. The storyline also has great depth of feeling thanks to the challenging topics the author deals with. There are some touching moments and the one that really touched my heart was the comment (评论) Teddie made about her father. It’s actually quite amazing how much happens in such a shor t story, but none of it feels rushed.28. Which statement is the author’s view according to Paragraph 1?A. He couldn’t get the story’s deep thoughts.B. He has always been interested in short stories.C. He didn’t expect to visit the village of Tindledale.D. He was looking forward to Alex Brown’s new book.29. What does the underlined expression in Paragraph 3 mean?A. In high spirits.B. Burning with curiosity.C. Super sad and worried.D. Very touched and satisfied.30. What can we learn about Not Just for Christmas?A. Its storylines are pretty simple.B. It is in fact an amusing comedy.C. It focuses on Kitty and her dog Monty.D. Its characters soon win the heart of readers.31. What moment touched the author most?A. A lovely touch of celebration.B. Kitty’s warm welcome to Monty.C. Monty’s everlasting love to the family.D. Teddie expressing her opinion about her father.DBack-to-back hurricanes hit the U.S. Virgin Islands last fall and caused a lot of damage. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has collected more than 736,000 cubic (立方的) yards of rubbish as they rush to clean up St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix, the Virgin Islands’ three major islands, but there is no place to put it. Some of the rubbish is metal (金属), some of it is wood and parts of buildings, but most of it is trees and other plants. The Army Corps will ship the metal to the U.S. mainland to be sold. After being cut up into small parts, wood and other rubbish will be sent there, too. But it is much harder to get rid of the trees and big plants. The Army Corps wanted to burn the plant waste. It is the cheapest way to get rid of it, which was done in New York and New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy in 2012.But people in the Virgin Islands thought it could harm their health and the health of the islands, too. The protest started on the island of St. John, which is circled by coral reefs (珊瑚礁) and includes a big national park. People on St. Thomas and St. Croix joined in, too.Sending the plant waste to the mainland is not a good idea, either. It includes insects that could create problems in other areas. In Puerto Rico, an island in the Caribbean Sea, the Army Corps is cutting plant waste into mulch (护根), which helps improve the soil. People in the Virgin Islands like the idea. But there may not be enough space for all of it.And some people are tired of waiting. Raphael Munchez, whose home was damaged, is one of those people. “We need our government to get back on its feet,” he sai d. “It’s struggling right now. Nobody is worried about pollution right now. We are worried about getting all of this rubbish off the island.”32. What troubled the Army Corps in the Virgin Islands?A. The severe weather.B. The mountains of rubbish.C. The buildings in bad condition.D. The damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.33. What did people in the Virgin Islands think of burning the waste?A. It would not be fairly effective.B. It would not be environment-friendly.C. It would help them rebuild their islands.D. It would destroy coral reefs around the island.34. What is the government doing now to get rid of the plant waste?A. Burning it on St. Croix.B. Sending it to the mainland.C. Cutting all of it into mulch.D. Still waiting for a solution.35. What do Munchez’s words in the last paragraph suggest?A. There will be a quick fix.B. The burning ban wastes time.C. The government’s struggle is worthy.D. Pollution should be regarded as a big problem.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

This can be a shock.●Don't have a TV in your bedroom; having a TV in your bedroom greatly increases viewing time and if you tend to (倾向于做某事) eat while viewing, the results are obvious(明显的).●Think of a healthy way instead of watching TV that you like. This can be as simply as walking the dog or walking to visit a neighbor regularly. After a few months you are likely to be surprised about how much more time you seem to have and how much better you feel.41. In the view of the author, which of the following is a healthy way?A. Watching TV.B. Walking the dog.C. Sitting still.D. Lying in a couch.BDo you have bright ideas? Ideas for inventions that change society or at least, make life easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don't often make the idea a reality. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called "British Designers for Tomorrow", which encouraged young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contests:Group One was for school children under 16; Group Two was for school children over 16. And there were eleven prize winners altogether.Neil Hunt, one of the prize winners, was called "Sunshine Superman" by one newspaper carrying his design. It's important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Mostsunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Neil's is more accurate and this is very important for research into the way of using solar power. With his prize of $100, Neil plans to carry on inventing. You can do so much with animation (动画片). Look at Simon West's idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn't a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. "We found that people were more likely to pay attention to moving signs," said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, strains moving, horses galloping (飞奔) or a car falling over the edge of a cliff. Quite a warning! The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised why British industry doesn't ask more school children for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of pupil power!45. was carried out recently in Britain.A.A competition among school childrenB. A competition in designing industryC.A competition for 11 prize winnersD. One quiet weekend they broke into the shop next to it. Then they made a hole in the wall and got into the bank. One of their friends was watching the bank from a flat on the other side of the road. He had the duty of telling the men inside if there was any danger. The men talked to each other by radio, and someone else heard their conversation. The police were told. But they couldn't find the right bank. The robbers escaped with a lot of money.Amateur radio people, or "hams", as they are usually called, listen to radio stations all over the world. Short wave bands are used in order to transmit over a long distance. They are also used for transmitting such things as telegrams and newspaper pictures. The criminals were using a short wave band, and a ham with the right equipment could listen to it easily. The result was that the bank robbers were nearly caught. Not much equipment is needed for receiving, and it is fairly cheap. Some hams also want to transmit, but transmitting equipment is expensive. A special license is needed too. Before that is given, a ham has to pass some examinations. Then he can transmit on a few special wave bands. Hams make friends with other hams all over the world, but the only thing they seem to talk about is their equipment!48. The man in the flat had to .A. look for money in houses on the other side of the streetB. tell them in the bank if there was any dangerC. break into the bank from the streetD. listen to police messages on the radio49. Messages can be transmitted on short wave bands.A. only to the policeB. to banksC. only to friends nearbyD. over a long distanceDRick Stevenson, 16 years old, spends every minute he can on the mountain. He and his friends go snowboarding every weekend. "It's great," he says. "The winds are so strong, the boards, go 50 miles an hour." His friend Laura Field agrees. "No one goes skiing any more," she says, "That's for the old folks."Rick and Laura are part of a new trend in sports. Its philosophy (宗旨) is to get as close to the edge as possible. And more and more young athletes are taking part in these risky (冒险的) activities called "extreme sports" or "X-sports".In the past, young athletes would play baseball. Today, they want risk and excitement-the closer to the edge, the better. They snowboard over cliffs and mountain--bike down steep mountains. They wind -surf near hurricanes and bungee--jump from towers.Extreme sports started as an alternative (选择余地) to more expensive sports such as golf. A city kid who didn't have the money to buy expensive sports equipment could get a skateboard and have fun. But now it has become a whole new area of sports, with specialized equipment and high levels of skill. There's even a special Olympics for extreme sports, called the Winter X-Games, which includes snow mountain biking and ice climbing. What makes extreme sports so popular? "People love the risk," says Murray Nussbaum, who sells sports equipment. "City people want to be outdoors on the weekend and do something challenging. The new equipment is so much better that people can take more risks without getting hurt." An athlete adds, "Sure there's a risk, Once you go mountain biking or snowboarding, it's impossible to go back to bike riding or skiing. It's just too boring."Now even the older crowd is starting to join in. Every weekend groups of friends in their early 30s get together. During the week they work as computer programmers in the same office. On Sundays they rent mountain bikes that cost $2,000 each and ride down steep mountains together.Extreme sports are certainly not for everyone. Most people still prefer to play basketball or watch sports on TV. But extreme sports are definitely gaining in popularity. "These sports are fresh and exciting. It's the wave of the future." Says Nussbaum.52.What would be the best title for the text?A. Rick Stevenson.B. People's Love for Risk.C. X--Sports.D. We do not normally put them in a composition or letter. Sometimes it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean. Here are a few examples:1)"Once bitten, twice shy."If a dog bites me, I shall be twice as careful in future when I see it. This proverb is also used to apply to many things and not only to dogs. If you have been cheated at a shop, you will not go to the same shop again.2)"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."If I am a hunter, trying to catch birds, it is better to catch one bird than to see two birds in a bush but not be able to catch them. Thus this means that what you have already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in future.3)"Too many cooks spoil the broth (soup)."When too many people do something, they get in each other's way and do a job.4)"To pour oil on troubled waters."is to try to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people. However, it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough.5)"Don't be a dog in a manger (槽)"means"Don't be selfish."In a stable (马房), the manger is the place where the horse's food is put. Sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes to get its food. The dog does not want to eat the hay in the manger but it will not let the horse eat it.6)"He is sitting on the fence."means that somebody will not say whether he is in favour of a plan or against it. He is sitting on a fence between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win.7)"He who pays the piper calls the tune."A piper is a musician. The man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the man will play. Thus this means that if a man provides the money fora plan, he can say how it will be carried out.8)"You can't get blood out of a stone."means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want. e. g. you cannot get a million dollars from a poor man.56.Peter had a bicycle which was much too small for him but he did not want to let his youngerbrother ride on it. He has five medals from the 1995 World Transplant Games in swimming and hopes to collect some more next year in Japan.“At one time, we were probably strange people in the eyes of other people. Now it’s expected you should be able to go back and do everything you did before, only better.”The biggest change for Winter, however, isn’t that he has become a competitive athlete. The biggest change is how deeply he appreciates very little thing about his life now.“I have not time for arguments,”said Winter.“You change everything. Material things don’t mean as much. Friendships mean a lot.”Also at yesterday’s news conference was Dr. Gary Levy, Winter’s doctor.Levy said he has bitter-sweet feelings when he looks at Winter and hears of his athletic exploits.Levy knows that for every recipient(接受者)like Winter, there are several others who die even though they could be saved because there aren’t enough donated organs.“For every year, we have five to 10 people that will never be given the chance that Mr. Winter was given,”Levy said.Levy said greater public awareness and more resources are needed. He noted that in Spain and the United States, hospitals receive $10,000 per donor to cover the costs of the operating room, doctors, nurses and teams to work with the donors’ families.1. Which of the following is true about the 19-year-old?A. He died of liver trouble.B. He got wounded in a battle.C. He was willing to donate his organs.D. He became a recipient of a prize.2. What do we know about Dick Winter?A. He is becoming less competitive now.B. He is always thinking about his early life.C. He knows all about the young man and his family.D. He values friendships more than material things.3. Dr. Levy would agree that ______________.A. Spanish hospitals have more favorable conditions for organ transplant.B. the Canadian public have realized the importance of organ donation.C. Spanish hospitals received more money from the donors.D. Canadian hospitals now have enough donated organs.4. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this article?A. the public should give more support to organ transplant.B. Transplant patients are thankful for the help they receive.C. Transplant can change a patient’s life greatly.D. It is not easy to get organs for transplant.BI needed to get some money, so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department atGraham’s for the first fortnight of the January sale. I can’t say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I’ll never forget.I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly , there is the special winter stock(货物)and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn’t sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in “seconds”(clothes not in perfect condition)for the sale and they are sold very cheaply. When I arrived half an hour before opening the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous. When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in. I couldn’t believe my eyes; this wasn’t shopping. It was battlefield! One poor lady couldn’t keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colors and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl through people’s legs and get hold of things they couldn’t get neat themselves.Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper! I was taking my money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, Graham’s were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain, it was OK.You won’t believe this, but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. You’re going with me to cut grass.”The idea that my father actually thought I was big enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunup to sundown my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large yards in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was tired out, but I felt good. I had put in a hard day’s labor and had earned $6.One day my father found some leaves I’d missed and pulled me aside. “Clear away these leaves, ”he said firmly, “and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again,”The message was clear. Today I value the importance of doing a job tight the first time. It will never fail to impress the person you are working for. After two years my father told me and my brother that he felt we were old enough to do lawns(草坪)on our own. Every Saturday during our last two years of high school, we set out early in the morning with the same desire and drive we had gained while working under our father.Taking care of lawns was not exciting or high-paying, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job is a good job and that whatever I was paid was more than I had before.A newspaper once asked me how someone could possibly live on a forty-hour-a-week minimum(最低的)pay. “My father never worked just forty hours a week, and neither have I,”I replied. “If you’re only working forty hours, you probably don’t want to do any better than you’re doing.”In every job I’ve held —from doing lawns to washing dishes —I have learned something that helped me in my next job. If you look hard enough, you can learn from my job you do.1. Why did the writer feel proud and excited when asked to cut grass?A. He was old enough to help his family.B. A competition named British Designers for tomorrow46. The aim of the competition was .A.to ask children for suggestionsB. Which of the four pictures does not describe extreme sports?55. Generally speaking, are unfit for extreme sports by inference from the text.A. city teenagersB. the aged peopleC. office workersD. high school studentsEProverbs are quite common in spoken English. Thus this means that if a man provides the money fora plan, he can say how it will be carried out.8)"You can't get blood out of a stone."means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want. e. g. you cannot get a million dollars from a poor man.56.Peter had a bicycle which was much too small for him but he did not want to let his youngerbrother ride on it. sodas for the taste.People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it.Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn't drink diet sodas.“What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,”said Sharon Fowler. The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years. While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations.Nutrition expert,Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don't lose weight at all.“We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us,”said Rogers. So why would diet soda cause weight gain?No one knows for sure yet,but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate for the missing calories.A related study found some sweeteners(甜味剂)raised blood sugar levels in some mice.“Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky,”said Helen P.Hazuda, professor at the University of Texas's school of medicine.“They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.”1.People drink diet sodas to ______.A.enjoy its taste B.stay in sportsmanship, then,be taught in school?Critics do not think so.__1__ Presented here are the most important benefits of teaching sportsmanship.Teaching good sportsmanship and having a positive attitude in activities like sports, class elections, and science fair competitions are critical to success in school.__2__Acting calmly under pressure helps young adults succeed not only in sports but also in life.__3__A person cannot play by the rules if he or she does not understand what the rules are.Knowing the rules also applies to other activities. If students enter a science fair competition, for example, they must follow the guidelines. Those who know the rules are much more likely to succeed. When students learn sportsmanship, they discover knowing the rules relates to achievement.Good players become skilled at handling responsibility. When people accept responsibility, they achieve their best.Positive thinkers, moreover, influence others, especially those who are struggling with a problem.A gifted basketball player, for example, might teach skills to a less-talented player.Helping others raises the performance of the entire team. The team, consequently, could reach new heights and set new records.__4__ Those who do not practice sportsmanship pass off responsibility. For them,if an opportunity is lost,it is someone else's fault. When students participate on a team, they benefit by learning to accept responsibility, encourage others and own up to mistakes.Sportsmanship is a winning idea.It must be taught in school.Students need direction to become “good sports”.Students will be responsible for their own actions and will have a positive influence on others. As students enter the workforce, businesses benefit. The community also benefits because these students will someday become leaders.__5__A.We need to cate students about how sportsmanship pays off for everyone.B.However,the stronger argument favours teaching good sportsmanship.C.Sports help young adults learn how to team up with others.D.Good sportsmanship also means admitting mistakes.E.Activities involving winning or losing can be tense.F.It is natural that players should be eager to win.G.Good team players know the rules of the game.Ⅴ.书面表达假如你是中学生李华,你的外籍教师琳达(Linda)邀请你去参加她周日下午举办的生日聚会,可是你有事不能参加。
