Royal Botanic Gardens VictoriaB. St Kilda Esplanade MarketC. Melbourne Star Observation WheelD. Puffing Billy RailwayBWhen I was first married to my wife, I lived and worked in Ontario, moving from small town to big city as I pursued my career as a radio broadcaster. We have two sons, both of whom were born in Toronto, but they moved, with us, to Ottawa when they were quite young. They grew up there, and then, chasing their own careers, they also moved. One went to Canada's east coast near a city called Halifax and the other headed to the west coast to Vancouver. We had a dilemma; we were left in the middle. At the time I was still working and my job was in Ottawa. However, as we began to consider retirement we wondered where we should spend our final years. We couldn't be close to both of our children and there was no telling when they might again relocate. For several reasons we settled on a small town on Vancouver Island. At least we were close to one of them. However, he had his sights set on Hollywood and, when an opportunity presented itself, he left Canada and headed south. I helped him move. So, there we were, and still are, in our little west coast town. We love our little corner of paradise but we have paid a price. We have not been there for some important events such as the births of two of our grandchildren. We have missed watching each of them grow up; we have missed the normal, noisy households that have young people in them. Our home, while very comfortable, is also very quiet.Every fall we travel to see the children. We usually fly, first to California to see our son Scott and spend a week or more with him trying to catch up on everything we've missed. Then, usually in November, we make the even longer trip east across Canada to see Travis and our grandchildren, who are now teenagers, actually into their twenties. They seldom come to visit us. The distances are just too great and it is costly.Fortunately, both our boys are doing well and our grandchildren are growing up straight and tall. We love all of them and we are secure in the knowledge that they love us but the reality is that they don't need us. We have done our jobs and, at least in theory, we can sit back, relaxand enjoy the time remaining to us. They have also missed having a set of parents and grandparents around.Life has been good for our family but we have all paid a price.24. What's the dilemma ( Pa. 1) to the author and his wife?A. The situation where they were not happy about their sons'absence.B. The fact that they were unwilling to separate from their sons.C. The fact that they were not yet prepared for retirement at that time.D. The situation where they couldn't decide which son to live with.25. The reason why the author says they have paid a price is that ______ .A. they have lost lots of money because of his retirementB. they have to pay a large sum of money to their sonsC. they have been absent from their children's lifeD. they have to afford very expensive fare to visit their sons26. Why do not the authors grandchildren visit them regularly?A. They are quite occupied with their homework.B. It's not easy for the kids to visit their grandparents.C. They don't need their grandparents any more.D. The weather of winter in Canada is very awful.27. What is the best title for the text?A. A Price to PayB. Suffering SeparationC. Love ActuallyD. Hidden EmotionsCMany people believe that there is one form of their language that is more correct than others. They may believe for example that British English is more correct than other varieties; or that written English is more correct than spoken English ;or that standard spoken forms are more correct than dialect forms. Often this belief is supported by reference books to grammars, usage guides or dictionaries:if something goes against a rulein a grammar, or if the word isn't in the dictionary, it " must be wrong”. Since th e reference books are most often based on observation of the standard written language ( and not by a grammar book in the sky) , the argument is really circular: these books will naturally describe standard usage, because that is what they are for;but this does not mean that there is anything wrong with other kinds of usage that are less often described.A better way of looking at things is to say that usage is " correct in its place". Standard American English is correct in America, British English is correct in Britain, spoken grammar is accepted in casual speech, and formal written grammar is employed in formal writing. The onlyforms that are wrong in all contexts (语境)are learners' errors. For example: I have forgetting the your address, or One of your chairs are broken. This means there is no answer to the question: " What kind of English should learners study?” It depends on their purposes. For many learners, the best model is one or other of the two main standard varieties : British or American English. Neither of these is "better” than the other, and they are both used and understood worldwide.People are also worried by language change. If younger people " break"the rules that older people have learnt, or use language in new ways, older people often feel disturbed: they are concerned that younger people no longer know their grammar, and that the language is going downhill. This is a needless worry: change is natural and inevitable, it cannot be stopped, and it does not generally affect a languages efficiency as a communicative tool. A great deal of modem English grammar would have been wrong three hundred years ago, and will perhaps be wrong again three hundred years from now.28. Why does the author think “the argument is really circular"(Pa. 1)?A. Learners are always confused by the reference books.B. Usages not mentioned in the reference books are not necessarily wrong.C. Nobody can challenge the authority of the reference books.D. Some wrong usages can be found in the reference books.29. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?A. There is no "standard English”.B. American English is better than British English.C. A learner should master all the distinctions of different English.D. The differences between British English and American English.30. The underlined word (Pa. 3 )can be most probably replaced with _.A. unbelievableB. uncountableC. unacceptableD. unavoidable31. What is the authors attitude towards the changes of English?A. Disturbed.B. Cautious.C. Optimistic.D. Aggressive.DSome creative people see colours when they hear different sounds. Others see colours when they see words and numbers printed in black and white. These interesting people are called synaesthetes, and what they experience is called synaesthesia.①.A study at the University of Sussex is finding out how learning to see sounds as colours or think of letters in colour could improve your IQ and memory.Study leaders Dr Daniel Bor and Dr Nicolas Rothen have been working on memory for a number of years. They want to see which parts of the brain do different jobs. Dr Bor says thatcarrying out these tests has given them the opportunity to find out more about how we use different kinds of memory.②.He explains that Professor Simon Baron Cohen, of the University of Cambridge, was largely responsible for beginning the modem science of synaesthesia in the 1980s. 'His tests showed that synaesthesia was real, and this made lots of scientists in different places want to do similar research.'Information chunkingDr Bor based his latest research around something scientists already know a lot about —'chunking' . He explains that this is a way of breaking large pieces of information into smaller units, to make it easier to remember, 'When I give you my phone number, 01274737215, you probably remember it as 012 74 73 72 15 , or something similar. If you can remember 012 and the first 74, you can remember the rest. You can get some amazing benefits from chunking.'This is really important for understanding synaesthesia. Dr Bor says that synaesthesia adds extra information to things that are difficult to remember, such as letters and numbers, or extra colours. This helps us remember things better.③.'All these signs are pointing towards synaesthesia being connected to greater abilities to do certain things, certain jobs,' says Dr Bor. 'So, the study began as a way to test that.' They developed the study from an idea by Dr Nicolas Rothen who had trained people for ten minutes a day for a week. The results were not huge, but they were interesting. They used those ideas in the study and they did see strong benefits.④.They discovered that, after training, people were able to pass the normal synaesthesia tests, and their IQ jumped up about 12 points! As Dr Bor says, 'Synaesthetes are really pleased and proud that they get a memory advantage and they see the world in this extra special way.'32. The proper title of each part for the passage should be _____ .a. Amazing resultsb. The beginning of asciencec. Training in Synaesthesiad. Studying memoryA.①-d ②-b ③-c ④-dB.①-d ②-c ③-d ④-bC.①-b ②-d ③-d ④-cD.①-b ②-d ③-c ④-d33. What role did Professor Cohen play in the study of synaesthesia?A. Finding out the secret of memory.B. Using high-technologies to improve our memory.B. Linking something to other things which are similar.C. Employing smart methods to progress our study.D. Dividing large amounts of information into smaller ones.35. As Dr Bor says, by conducting the tests they will know better about ______ .A. soundsB. memoryC. 2020届湖北省宜昌市高三4月线上统一调研测试英语试题(word无答案)

2020届湖北省宜昌市高三4月线上统一调研测试英语试题(word无答案)一、阅读理解(★)1 . The province of Pescara surrounds the city of the same name and lies in the very centre of the region of Abruzzo. This is a part of Italy of remarkable beauty and with cultural riches, yet it has never been a major destination for international visitors, largely because the region is not very well served by international flight routes. However, many Italians make their way to the coast here in the summertime. Here are places to visit around the Pescara province. The city of PescaraThe city of Pescara is the most famous today for being the birthplace of Gabriele D’ Annunzio, perhaps the greatest Italian writer of the modern times. It is a developed coastal resort (胜地) with several miles of popular sandy beaches and a range of summertime activities for all the family to enjoy.Citta Sant’ AngeloLying just a few miles northwest of the city of Pescara in an area famous for the production of Montepulcianod’Abruzzowine, its main v isitor attractions are the churches of San Michele Arcangelo and Santa Chiara.Loreto AprutinoAlmost directly west of Pescara, and north of Bolognano, it is worth visiting just to see its wall painting of The Judgement, but this small town has many more to offer the visitor including the region’s pottery industry and some excellent olive oil.Castiglione a CasauriaIf you enjoy further southwest from Loreto Aprutino, you will come to Castiglione a Casauria and the remains of the 9th-century Abbey (修道院) of San Clemente.【小题1】Why did the Pescara province see fewer foreign tourists? A.It is a place newly opened to the world.B.Its climate is not well appropriate for them.C.Most foreign tourists dislike its specific culture.D.It is inconvenient for visitors to arrive in Pescara.【小题2】What do you know about the city of Pescara? A.It has remains of the 9th-century Abbey.B.It is one of the most attractive coastal cities.C.It appeals to writers of the modern times.D.It is near the Pescara province.【小题3】Which of the following will you choose to go to if you love art? The 33-year-old Australian, Bradley, is actually a student in international relations completing his PhD through Griffith University. He came to Beijing for a cooperative research at Peking University less than two years ago. Such an academic life was just added color with a chance offered b y the cultural exchanges project, “I’m in China”.Bradley was lucky to win the most “likes” for his photo story about his life in China and became one of 20 winners to visit locations after a global recruitment (招募) by the project this summer. All the winners’ experiences were filmed to produce a reality show, My Chinese Working Day, which will be broadcast by mid-September. The film crew took them to many “amazing sites” and the staff taught them a lot about how to incorporate modern Chinese characteristics while still keeping traditional customs. “I woul d have to say two things stick out as the most memorable: the helicopter ride and talking with the staff at the hotel about how they organize weddings here in China,” he said. That was Bradley’s first time to be in a helicopter, and he was too absorbed wit h the awesome view of the beautiful coastline. “I think it is so important to show other Australians the different landscapes China has to offer. I think so many Australians, when they think about China, imagine the historical sites of Beijing and the exciting things to see in Shanghai but have no idea about other beautiful places, like Sanya or the many other places people have been taken to in this TV series,” Bradley said.“I’m in China” is a project sponsored by China Intercontinental Communicatio n Centre and other institutions under the guidance of China’s State Council Information Office. A.Education.B.Environment.C.Culture.D.History.(★★★★)3 . Just as regulation has helped increase fuel efficiency, cut exhaust smokes and introduce anti-slip equipment, so government involvement is needed to get the connected car on the road. It is beginning to happen. Earlier this year, Europe’s s tandards-setting agencies agreed a common set of agreements for cars and traffic infrastructure (基建) to communicate. Others should follow. Governments should then set firm deadlines for all new cars to be fully connected and capable of matching, and a date for existing cars to be re-improved with a basic locator beacon (定位器) and the ability to receive risky warnings. If cars are to connect, new infrastructure will have to be built. Roads and parking spaces will need sensors to monitor them; motorways will need specific lanes for matching. But this will not necessarily be expensive. Upgrading traffic signals so they can be controlled remotely by a central traffic management system is a lot cheaper than building new roads. The sooner these changes are made, and cars are plugged into a smart traffic section, the quicker Singaporean variable pricing —for parking as well as road use —can become the criterion. Motorists will then have the motive, as well as the ability, to avoid the busiest places atthe busiest times, and the horrible death that roads take in human lives should start falling. In the past, more people driving meant more roads, more jams, more death and more smokes. In the future, the connected car could offer mankind the pleasures of the road with rather less of the pain.【小题1】What do governments truly expect of the connected car? A.It’ll be standard-friendly.B.It’ll get fully prepared soon.C.It’ll be under command.D.It’ll promote infrastructure.【小题2】What will happen if traffic signals are to upgrade? A.More sensors are offered by the companies.B.More special roads are needed by motorists.C.The whole project is more economical to operate.D.The whole society is crazier about the new cars.【小题3】Which is most UNLIKELY to benefit from such changes? A.Motorists.B.Singaporeans’ pricing.C.Road death.D.Traditional traffic sections.【小题4】Which best describes the author’s attitude in the text? A.Positive.B.Critical.C.Objective.D.Doubtful.(★★★★)4 . The year 2020 marks the beginning of the decade of the yold, or the “young old”, as the Japanese call people aged between 65 and 75. One might therefore expect peak retirement for baby-boomers born in 1955-60 in the coming years, but they are not retiring quietly into the background. By continuing to work, and staying socially involved, the yold will change the world, as they have done several times before at different stages of their lives. The yold are healthier, wealthier and more numerous (众多) than previous generations of seniors. 134million 65-to-74-year-olds account for 11% of the population in rich countries in 2020, up from 99million (8%) in 2000. Health worsens with age, but the yold are resisting the decline better than most: of the 3.7 years of increased life expectancy in rich countries between 2000 and 2015. The yold are also better off: between 1989 and 2013, the median (中位的) wealth of families headed by someone over 62 in America rose by 40% , while the wealth of allother age groups declined. The yold are not just any group of old people. The over-60s are one of the fastest-growing groups of customers of the airline business. They are also changing education. They are challenging the traditional expectations of the retired as people who wear slippers and look after the grandchildren. That will affect consumer, service and financial markets. The rise of the yold will be a blessing to themselves, to economies and to societies. But for all this to happen, three big things will have to change. The most important is public attitudes towards older people, and in particular the expectation that 60-somethings ought to be putting their feet up and quietly retiring into the background. Government policies will have to change, too. The retirement age in many rich countries is still below the age to which many people want to work.

You don’t need to be a world-class mountaineer to stand out in a job interview. Here’s my advice on how to nail the most common interview question. Most people are so eager to show off what they’ve been involved in. Don’t worry and there will be time for that. The interviewer has reviewed your resume and will ask you plenty about your expertise. “Tell me about yourself” is a question you’re certain to be asked at any jobinterview.___36___However, sharing something that shows who you really are beyond a piece of paper is a good idea. It will allow the interviewer to know something about your life outside of work.Everyone has something interesting to share about themselves. I’ve heard people talk about everything from being a world-class sushi chef to an ice carver.___37___ Such as you participate in competitive sports, you're an accomplished (技艺高超的) pianist and you’re writi ng your first detective novel. If the information showcases a unique aspect of yourself, and especially if you can link it to what you can bring to your next job, then go for it.Another way to think about the question is: “What gets you up every morning?” The person also wants to know what your sense of passion and purpose is. That volunteer work on a farm cooperative in South America, for example, shows you have a global perspective. ___38___ It doesn’t matter how big or small the accomplishment is, as lo ng as it shows you’re struggling to improve yourself. When people are motivated by contributing to something bigger than themselves, they get more satisfaction.___39___ Relax, be yourself and tell the truth. Don't approach the interview like you’re trying out for Broadway. It’s more than obvious when someone is trying to memorize their lines and “play the part”. Also, if you overstate what you've done or fully invent a story about yourself, you'll be exposed.___40___A. Take a risk to get personal.B. Showing honesty is one of the most important things.C. Running your first 10 kilometers shows you like a challenge.D. And then everything you say about yourself will be questioned.E. It's also important to tell it in a way that makes you memorable.F. Too many people respond to it by giving a recital of their resume.G. "Tell me about yourself" is an invitation for you to share brief information.【答案】36. F 37. E 38. C 39. B 40. D【解析】这是一篇应用文。

We have done our jobs and, at least in theory, we can sit back, relax and enjoy the time remaining to us. They have also missed having a set of parents and grandparents around.Life has been good for our family but we have all paid a price.24. What's the dilemma ( Pa. 1) to the author and his wife?A. The situation where they were not happy about their sons' absence.B. The fact that they were unwilling to separate from their sons.C. The fact that they were not yet prepared for retirement at that time.D. The situation where they couldn't decide which son to live with.25. They may believe for example that British English is more correct than other varieties; or that written English is more correct than spoken English ; or that standard spoken forms are more correct than dialect forms. Often this belief is supported by reference books to grammars, usage guides or dictionaries: if something goes against a rule in a grammar, or if the word isn't in the dictionary, it " must be wrong”. Si nce the reference books are most often based on observation of the standard written language ( and not by a grammar book in the sky) , the argument is really circular: these books will naturally describe standard usage, because that is what they are for; but this does not mean that there is anything wrong with other kinds of usage that are less often described.A better way of looking at things is to say that usage is " correct in its place". Standard American English is correct in America, British English is correct in Britain, spoken grammar is accepted in casual speech, and formal written grammar is employed in formal writing. The only forms that are wrong in all contexts (语境) are learners' errors. If younger people " break" the rules that older people have learnt, or use language in new ways, older people often feel disturbed: they are concerned that younger people no longer know their grammar, and that the language is going downhill. The underlined word ( Pa. 3 ) can be most probably replaced with ___ .A. unbelievableB. uncountableC. unacceptableD. unavoidable31. What is the authors attitude towards the changes of English?A. Disturbed.B. Cautious.C. Optimistic.D. Aggressive.DSome creative people see colours when they hear different sounds. Others see colours when they see words and numbers printed in black and white. These interesting people are called synaesthetes, and what they experience is called synaesthesia.① .A study at the University of Sussex is finding out how learning to see sounds as colours or think of letters in colour could improve your IQ and memory.Study leaders Dr Daniel Bor and Dr Nicolas Rothen have been working on memory for a number of years. They want to see which parts of the brain do different jobs. Dr Bor says that carrying out these tests has given them the opportunity to find out more about how we use different kinds of memory.② .He explains that Professor Simon Baron Cohen, of the University of Cambridge, was largely responsible for beginning the modem science of synaesthesia in the 1980s. This helps us remember things better.③ .'All these signs are pointing towards synaesthesia being connected to greater abilities to do certain things, certain jobs,' says Dr Bor. 'So, the study began as a way to test that.' They developed the study from an idea by Dr Nicolas Rothen who had trained people for ten minutes a day for a week. The results were not huge, but they were interesting. They used those ideas in the study and they did see strong benefits.④ .They discovered that, after training, people were able to pass the normal synaesthesia tests, and their IQ jumped up about 12 points! As Dr Bor says, 'Synaesthetes are really pleased and proud that they get a memory advantage and they see the world in this extra special way.'32.
