The murmur(低语) of the audience had just faded(淡化) into expectant(期待的) silence. This was one of the most important days in little five-year-old Patricia McKee’s life: the Kernot School Concert. She stood behind the curtain with her schoolmates. Yet she was not afraid because everyone had been practicing for weeks and knew their parts by heart.
Being in a remote country town, Patricia knew that everyone would turn out for the big occasion-everyone! Yet, it was this awareness that added a sense of sadness to her excitement. There were two people who couldn’t be in that audience that night-her mum and dad.
Patricia’s mothe r and father ran the local general store, which was open for business 24 hours. So it was simply accepted that Mum and Dad could never attend community activities. It had been this way with her sister, so why should it be any different for her?
Still, Patr icia couldn’t help wishing that her mum and dad could be there to see her on such a special day, so she decided to bring up the subject with her mother. Sadly, she had to face the facts. At such a young age, Patricia couldn’t really understand the deep pain in her mother’s response(回答): “I’ll try to be there, sweetheart, but you know how hard it is for us to get away from the store.”
Yet as the curtain slowly opened on the stage of the Kernot Hall, little Patricia McKee got the surprise of her life. There, sitting four rows the front was her mother with a big smile on her face!
This powerful image remains one of Patricia’s most treasured memories. “Words cannot express the pure joy we both experienced at that moment. I was really walking on air,” said Patricia, now a parent herself. Her parents have passed away, but what a wonderful legacy(遗产)they’ve left us: when someone really needs you, be there for them.
25. What do we know about Patricia’s parents?
A. They loved Patricia more than her sister.
B. They had little interest in social activities.
C. They paid no attention to Patricia’s school life.
D. They had to mind the store day and night.
26. According to Paragraph 4, while giving the response, Patricia’s mother probably felt_________.
A. calm
B. sorry
C. angry
D. nervous
27. What does the underlined phrase “walking on air” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Surprised.
B. Troubled.
C. Very happy.
D. Very comfortable.
C
Advertising plays a major role in the competitive business world. Many industries take advantage of the power of advertising to attract or to win customers away from their business competitors. The influence of advertising is so huge that it causes many people to buy things that they do not want at the start.
Advertis ing encourages people to buy things they don’t want through misleading ideas. Advertising is proven to be a successful tool to stress the features of their product to the public even though it is regarded undesirable(不受欢迎的) such as cigarettes, drugs, alcohol and so on. For example, Dunhill, a cigarette company which sponsors (赞助) many football teams, seems to be promoting cigarettes to the public. Without the sponsorship, the company will be less known to the public, resulting in fewer sales of cigarettes
Besides that, advertising has a large influence on the decisions made by the people in their everyday life. Many businesses use advertising as a form of promotion to create awareness (意识,认知) about their product in the market. For instance, in a fast food industry, the introduction of a new flavor of burger needs advertising to reach the public while the other burgers require advertising to increase sales. Children, especially, are easily influenced by the advertisement and will have the desire to dine at fast food restaurants after that. Although fast food is bad for health, it has successfully become attractive to the public through advertising
However, advertising plays a part in helping customers to compare a product in terms of price, quality, reliability(可靠性) and so on. Without advertising, it will be very difficult for customers to judge the worthiness(价值) of a product. For example, advertisements published by various companies have given the customers the opportunity to choose wisely when buying an item. Without the power of advertising, customers will choose a brand(品牌) which may not offer the best choice.
28. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Advertising.
B. The product.
C. Feature.
D. The public.
29. The author mentions the fast food restaurants to show that______.
A. food industry is having a hard time
B. the information passed on in advertisements is unreal
C. children are easily influenced by the advertisement
D. advertisements influence people to make decisions
30. The main idea of Paragraph 4 is that advertising______.
A. plays a role in fast food industry
B. helps industries attract customers
C. encourages people to make the right choices
D. makes people buy some unnecessary things
31. The au thor’s attitude towards advertising can best be described as______.
A. objective
B. supportive
C. uncared
D. doubtful
D
One half of the brain remains on high alert (警觉的) during the first night of sleep in a new place, according to a new study.
Over the course of three experiments on 35 young, healthy volunteers, researchers measured (测量) brain activity during two nights of sleep. They found that part of the left side of the brain remained more active than the right side only on the first night, specifically during a deep sleep stage.
“When you sleep in a new place for the first time, a part of one side of the brain seems to stay awake, so you could wake up faster if something dangerous should happen,” said senior study author Yuka Sasaki of Brown University.
While this may be bad news for business travelers who regularly make short overnight trips, it may not be as troublesome for people who go away for longer periods of time, Sasaki added.
To see how being in a strange place affects sleep, Sasaki and colleagues performed lab tests on their subjects. When they stimulated (刺激) the left side of the brain with sounds in the right ear during deep sleep on the first night, that led to greater possibility of waking and faster action
upon waking, than if sounds were played in the left ear to affect the right side of the brain. On the second night, there wasn’t any difference in reactions to tests between the left and right sides of the brain. This suggests there is a first-night-only effect in one side of the brain during deep sleep, the authors conclude.
One problem with the new study is its focus(重点)on healthy volunteers, which means the results may not apply to people with sleep disorders, the authors note.
While it is possible that the findings may explain poor sleep among frequent travelers, the study wasn’t designed to test whether these "first night effects "continue to happen to people every time they hit the road, said Patrick Finana researcher at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
32. If a man sleeps in a new place for the first time, ______.
A. he can’t fall into sleep
B. a part of his brain stays awake
C. he usually feels unsafe
D. both sides of his brain are on alert
33. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The finding of the new study
B. The advice of the researchers
C. The process of measuring brain activity
D. The suffering of the volunteers
34. If people stay at a new place for more than one day, ______.
A. they can wake faster on the second night than on the first night
B. there won’t be any difference to them on the second night
C. they suffer from sleep disorders
D. the first night effects may not last
35. What is the problem of the new study?
A. All of the volunteers are young.
B. The finding may be false.
C. None of the volunteers are sick.
D. There are not enough volunteers.

Urbanization
Until relatively recently, the vast majority(大部分) of human beings lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5,500 years ago. ___36___.
In fact, nearly everyone lived on farms or in tiny rural (乡村的) villages. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history-- a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living.
Britain was only the beginning. ___37___. The process of urbanization, the migration (迁移) of people from the countryside to the city, was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live.
In 1900, fewer than 40% of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82% of Americans live in cities. Only about 2% live on farms. ___38___.
Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies, it took about ninety-five people on farms to feed five people in cities. ___39___. Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite (精英) and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing(收税) farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus(富余的) food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city.
Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country. ___40___. Today, instead of needing ninety-five farmers to feed five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred non-farmers.
A. That kept cities very small.
B. The rest live in small towns.
C. The effects of urban living on people should be considered.
D. Soon many other industrial nations became urban societies.
E. But even 200 years ago, only a few people could live in cities.

There were such many tourists stood in front of the ticket window that we had to wait for a long time. Both of us were excited when we got the ticket. Then, we had a good time boating on the lake. Unfortunately, just as we planned return to the bank, we were caught in a heavy rain. Face with the unexpected situation, we remained calm and shared the umbrella I had taken to each other. Finally, we managed to reach the bank safely but got on the bus heading back home.
