Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They
travel to visit other countries, modern cities and ancient towns. They travel to
enjoy these special places, or just to relax. It is always interesting to discover new things and different ways of life, such as by meeting different people, trying
different food, and listening to different music.
People who live in the country like to go to big cities. They like to spend
their time visiting museums and art galleries, looking at shop windows and dining at
restaurants. People who live in the city usually like a quiet holiday by the
sea or in the mountains, with nothing to do but walk and bathe in the sun.
Most travellers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that
interests them. Then, perhaps years later, they can look at the photos and be
reminded of the happy time they once had. People often travel by train, by boat or by car. All means of travelling have
advantages and disadvantages and people choose one according to their plans and the places they are going.
If we travel a lot, we will see and discover a lot of things that we could
never see or experience at home, though we may read about them in books and
newspapers. The best way to study geography is to travel, and the best way to get
to know and understand people is to meet them in their own homes.

A. To travel a lot and experience more.
B. To meet some more people in their homes.

A. We ’ d better go the countryside for a holiday.
B. Taking photos in a trip is unnecessary.
C. It’ s good for us to travel more if possible.
D. Cities are the best choice of all the travellers.

the"do-it-yourself"(DIY)trend(趋
势) in the U.S. continues to grow. "We needed furniture(家具)for our living room, "says John Ross, "and we just didn’ t have enough money to buy it. So we decided
to try making a few tables and chairs." John got married six months ago, and in
common with many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at
a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for
$280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around
the house. Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home
as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill
for $420. "I was deeply upset about it. Now I’ ve finished a car repair course,
I should be able to fix the car by myself."
John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing
everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living. If
you want to become a "do-it-yourselfer", you can go to DIY classes. And for those
who don’ t have time to take a course, there are books that tell you how you can
do things yourself. 21. We can learn from the text that many newly married people _____.

A. The Joy of DIY
B. You Can Do It Too!
C. Welcome to Our DIY Course!
D. Ross and Hatfield: Believers in DIY.

Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer
( 扫盲志愿者 ). The training I received, though excellent, didn't tell me how it
was to work with a real student, however. When I began to discover what other
people ’ s lives were like because they could not read, I realized the true
importance of reading. My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three children. In
the first lesson,I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn't know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her
a bus schedule, she told me it would not help because she couldn't read it. She
said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket because she couldn't
always remember what she needed. Also, she could only recognize items by sight,
so if the product had a different label, she would not recognize it as the product
she wanted. As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie’ s self-confidence.
She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt. At the end
of the program, she began helping her youngest son,Tony, a shy first grader, with his reading. I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more
rewarding than anything I had ever done before.
As a literacy volunteer, I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others.
In fact, I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did.
28.What did the writer do last summer?
A. She worked in the supermarket.
B. She helped someone to learn to read.
C. She helped some single mothers.
D. She was trained by a literacy volunteer.
29.Why didn't Marie go to the supermarket by bus at first?
A.Because she liked to walk to the supermarket.
B.Because she didn't have a bus schedule.
C.Because she couldn't afford the bus ticket.
D.Because she couldn't find the right bus.
30.How did Marie use to find the goods she wanted in the supermarket?
A. She knew where the goods were in the supermarket.
B. She asked others to take her to the right place.
C. She managed to find the goods by their looks.
D. She remembered the names of the goods.
31.Which of the statements is TRUE about Marie?
A. She could do many things she had not been able to before.
B. She was able to read stories with the help of her son.
C. She decided to continue her studies in school.
D. She helped to build up my self-confidence.

It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers (生产商) follow certain uniform standards for various features(特色) of clothes. What seems strange, however, is that the standard adopted for women is the opposite of the one for
men. Take a look at the way your clothes button. Men’s clothes tend to button
from the right, and women’ s from the left. Considering most of the world’ s population---men and women---are right-handed, the men’ s standard would appear
to make more sense for women. So why do women’ s clothes button from the left? History really seems to matter here.Button first appeared only on the clothes
of the rich in the 17th century, when rich women were dressed by servants. For
the mostly right-handed servants, having women’ s shirts button from the left would
be easier. On the other hand, having men’ s shirts button from the right made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right
hand would be less likely to get caught in the shirt.
Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning from the left is
still the standard for them. Is it interesting? Actually, a standard, once set,
resists change. At a time when all women’ s shirts buttoned from the left,it would have been risky for any single manufacture to offer women’ s shirts that buttoned
the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the
left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch. It would be weird
for them to button from the right, since anyone who noticed that would believe
they were wearing men’ s shirts.
32.What is surprising about the standard of the clothing industry?
A. It has been followed by the industry for over 400 years.
B. It is different for men’ s clothing and women’ s.
C. It works better with men than with women.
D. It fails to consider right-handed people.
33.What do we know about the rich men in the 17th century?
A. They tended to wear clothes without buttons.
B. They were interested in the historical matters.
C. They were mostly dressed by servants.
D. They drew their swords from the left.
34.Women’ s clothes still button from the left today because .
A. adopting men’ s style is improper for women
B. manufacturers should follow standards
C. modern women dress themselves
D. customs are hard to change
35.The passage is mainly developed by .
A. analyzing cause
B. making comparisons
C. examining differences
D. following the time order

Test-taking tips
Do you sweat, check your pencil, and feel butterflies in your stomach as your
teacher hands out the test paper? A lot of people feel anxious when it is time
to take a test. Here are some tips for taking tests:
36 . Your memory recall will be much better if you have had enough rest. In
a scientific study, people who got enough sleep before taking a math test did better
than those who stayed up all night studying.
Read the test through first. Once you have the test paper in front of you,
read over the entire test, checking out how long it is and all the parts that you
are ex pected to complete.37 . If something seems unclear before you start, do
not panic: ask the teacher. Focus on addressing ( 解决 ) each question individually.38 . Instead, answer
the best way you can or skip over the question and come back to it after you have
answered other questions. Relax.39 . Of course you can not get up and move around in the middle of a
test, but you can wiggle (扭动) your fingers and toes, take four or five deep
breaths. As we all know, It can be easy to forget things we know well. During a
test, if you forget something and start to get tense, it suddenly becomes much
more difficult to remember. Finished already? Although most teachers will let you hand your test paper
in early, it is usually a good idea to spend any extra time checking over your
work.40 . On the other hand, if you have 5 minutes until the bell rings and you
are still writing, wind up whatever you are working on without panic.
A.Be sure you have studied properly.
B.Get enough sleep the night before the test.
C.This will allow you to decide how much time you have for each section.
D.As you take the test, if you do not know an answer, do not worry about it.
E.As the teacher hands out the test paper, be sure you know what is expected of you.
F.You can also add details that you may not have thought you’ d have time for.
G.If you are so nervous that you blank out, you might need a mini-break.

Dear headmaster,
I ’ m writing to request you to allow us to surf the Internet in the computer
classroom. Right now, we cannot use the computer in the computer classroom to get
on line, which makes us very upset because we can’ t search for the information
we need or read news.
As far as I am concerned, surfing the Internet can benefit us in many ways. First
of all, we can search for answers to some problems that we come across in our studies. Second, it is necessary for us to learn about the latest news. More importantly,
we are no longer children now, so we are able to control our behavior. I promise
we won’ t visit unhealthy websites.
I do hope you can take my suggestion into consideration and make a final decision. Yours,
Li Hua
