A. Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): ( 12分)
People often say that the Englishman’s home is his castle. They mean that the home is very important and personal to him. Most people in Britain live in houses instead of flats, and many people own their homes. This
means that they can make them individual (个体的). They can paint them and change them in any way they
like. The house is the private space of the individual.
People usually like to mark their space. If you are on the train, you may put your coat or bag on the seat
beside you. If you share a flat you may have one corner of your own.
Once I was traveling on a train to London. I was in a section for four people
and there was a table between us. The man on the opposite side to me had his
briefcase on the table. There was no space on my side of the table at all. I was
angry. I had read a book about non-verbal communication, so I took various
papers out of my bag and put them on his briefcase! When I did this he stiffened
(紧绷) and his eyes nearly popped out of his head. A few minutes later I took my
papers off his case in order to read them. He immediately moved his case to his side of the table. Of course, it
is possible that he just wanted to be helpful to me!
If you are visiting another country you may feel that you don’t have any private space. You see the local
people in their private spaces and you feel lonely and “outside”. Local people can create their private space talking about things you don’t know about. And you even feel that they like you
to be outside them so that they
will enjoy being inside even more! This is one of the difficulties of being a traveler! But if you understand it,
then it helps you. Haven’t you enjoyed being part of a group and “owning” a bit of space?

Most people around the world are right-handed. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different
times from 1,500 B.C. to the 1950s. They have found that most of the people shown in these works are right-handed. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left
-handed.
Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? For most people,
the hand is used to find things or hold things. This is because of the different work of
the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which
controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings
show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-
handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.
No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess th
ere must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the genes (基因) for right-handedness, he or she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.
Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like
other children, but today they don’t have to.
63. What have the scientists found after studying works of art made at different times in history?
64. How many people in the world are left-handed now?
65. For most people, what is the hand used to do?
66. According to the passage, artists are more likely to be left-handed, aren’t they?
67. What might decide whether people will become left-handed if they don’t suffer brain damage?
68. Do you think left-handed people are strange or unusual? Why? VI. Writing (作文) (20分)
