until在肯定句和否定句中的使用，要点可以概括如下：
肯定句
动作 + until内容：描述前一动作停止，下一动作即将开始
状态 + until内容：描述状态发生根本改变
否定句
not……until的用法，直到之后的情况出现以后，前一句的动作才发生。

没有否定就没有“才”的意思
咱们今天来看看until一些其它的考法。

首先是not until的特殊句式。

我们可以把原来分开的not和until合并在一起，改造出两种特殊句式来。

一是倒装句，一是强调句，作用都是一样的，表示对条件的强调。

倒装句
Not until they left school did they realize how much their teachers loved them and helped them.
直到他们离开学校，他们才意识到老师是多么的关爱和帮助他们。

原句：They did not realize ...... until they left school.
变化方式：Not until拉出来放在句首，until后面的条件照抄，剩下的句子要使用疑问句方式倒装，变成did they realize ......
注意，“Not until + 条件 + did we realize + 具体内容”是我们在情景作文中经常可以用到的句式，用来描述集体活动中我们的心理感受。

例如：
Not until the event started did we realize the difficulty in explaining the rules to the passers-by.
直到活动开始，我们才意识到向路人解释规则是多么的困难。

强调句
But it was not until 1604 that a book of uncommon English words appeared.
但是直到1604年，非常用英语词词典才出现。

原句：A book of uncommon English didn't appear until 1604.
变化方式：It was not until ...... that的句型先摆出来，until后面的内容照抄，剩下的部分直接放在that后面。

注意原句中的didn't因为not已经提前了，所以只能剩下did appear，变为appeared。

It is not until much later, as the heart weakens, that children understand: their stories, and all their accomplishments, sit on top of the stories of their mothers and fathers, stones upon stones, beneath the waters of their lives.
直到很久很久以后，内心变得虚弱的时候，孩子们才能明白：他们的人生故事，他们所有的人生成就，都建立在父母的人生基础之上，这些基础在孩子们的人生中默默的真实的存在着。

原句：Children don't understand until much later.
变化方式：It is not until ...... that的句型先摆出来，until后面的内容照抄，剩下的部分直接放在that后面。

注意原句中的don't因为not
已经提前了，所以只能剩下do understand，直接写understand即可。

关于这个强调句，我们可以直接这样理解：
It is not until + 条件 + that + 发生的情况
因为作用和倒装句是完全一样的，所以我们刚才的句子还可以写为：
It was not until the event started that we realized the difficulty in explaining the rules to the passers-by.
直到活动开始，我们才意识到向路人解释规则是多么的困难。

特殊句式说完以后，我们再来看另外一个until的特殊考法：until 和before两个词的区别。

我们来看道例题：
He had to knock at the door for 5 minutes ____ his wife opened it.
A. until
B. before
两个词的区别其实特别简单：until强调动作停止，before强调动作发生。

这里是一个肯定句，所以until传递的意思应该是“前面的动作停止，后面的动作发生”。

我们在这里是否要强调他敲了5分钟门之后不敲了呢？显然没必要。

而before传递的意思是“才”，表示后面的动作发生来之不易的感觉。

我们翻译这句话，应该都能大概理解出“他敲了5分钟，他妻子才开门”的含义。

所以这句话要强调不敲了，就选until，这句话要强调开门，就选before。

各位是否可以理解“until强调动作停止，before强调动作发生”的意思呢？
我们还可以看看before这个词类似的用法：
I had to try on a dozen pairs of shoes before I decided to buy this one.
我试穿了许多双鞋之后才决定买这双。

（决定动作来之不易）
It was many years before the accused was declared innocent and set free.
过了许多年，这个被控告的人才被宣告无罪释放。

（宣告动作来之不易）
到此为止，until的特殊考法我们基本上说完了。

until是一个高频考点，要求各位必须掌握。

我们以几道完形填空题目结束我们对于until的讲解。

And (36) ______ otherwise assigned a seat by the teacher, I always chose to sit at the back of the classroom.
A. as
B. until
C. unless
D. though
前面是被老师指定座位，后面是我选择坐的位置，明显是相反的关系。

而空格后面又有otherwise出现，强调“否则”的含义，所以能够和“否则”在一起的只有“除非”的逻辑，选择unless。

注意：unless otherwise就是unless的意思，只不过语气加强而已。

I believe I stayed in a state of pleasant disbelief (43) ______ I was halfway through rehearsals on my first day.
A. while
B. since
C. until
D. when
前面说我处于一种兴奋的不敢相信的状态中，后面是我第一天训练到一半的时候。

选择while表示两边同时发生，选择when表示在那一刻，均不合理，因为作者在此之前也有同样的心理状态，为什么要单独强调“训练到一半的时候”呢？since描述的是因果关系，更加不成立，所以选择until。

这里的含义实际上是，我在训练到一半之前一直都不敢相信这是真的（训练到一半之后就相信了）。

训练都开始一半了，我仍然认为这不是真的，强调作者的兴奋之情。

这题是难题。

She says she wants to be a gymnastics coach to pass down what she's learned to other kids (53) ______ she grows up.
A. until
B. as
C. when
D. before
这道题就简单多了。

前面是她想把自己学到的教给孩子们，后面是她长大，正常逻辑理解是“在她长大以后”。

沾边的理解只有when，当她长大的时候。

这道题的until和before都不太靠谱，而当时很多人会误选成as。

为什么不能选择as表示“随着她长大”呢？
