Mrs. Thompson paid more attention to Teddy. The boy’s mind seemed to come a live. The more she encouraged him, the faster he improved. By the end of the sixth grade, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class.
Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed: Theodore Stoddard, M.D.(医学博士).
The story doesn’t end there. On his wedding day, Dr. Stoddard whispered(低声说) in Mrs.
Thompson’s ear, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”
Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

Many animals recognize their food because they see it. So do humans. When you see an apple or a piece of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat. You can also use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one sense.
Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The giant panda eats only one particular type of bamboo. Other animals eat only one type of food even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly(蝴蝶) will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet(多样化饮食). The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the season.
Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.
25. We can infer from the text that humans and animals _________.
A. depend on one sense in choosing food
B. are not satisfied with their food
C. eat entirely different food
D. choose food in similar ways
26. Which of the following eats only one type of food?
A. The white butterfly.
B. The small bird.
C. The bear.
D. The fox.
27. Certain animals change their choice of food when ___________.
A. the season changes
B. the food color changes
C. they move to different places
D. they are attracted by different smells
28. We can learn from the last paragraph that __________.
A. some people care little about healthy diet
B. French and British food is good
C. some people have few choices of food
D. food is chosen for a good reason
C
Cassandra Feeley finds it hard to manage on her husband’s income. So this year she did something more than a hobby(业余爱好): She planted vegetables in her yard. For her first garden, Ms. Feeley has put in 15 tomato plants, and five rows of a variety of vegetables. The family’s old farm house has become a chicken house, its residents arriving next month. Last year, Ms. Rita Gartin kept a small garden. This year she has made it much larger because she said, “The cost of everything is going up and I was looking to lose a few pounds, too; so it's a win-win situation all around.”
They are among the growing number of Americans who, driven by higher living costs and a falling economy(经济), have taken up vegetable gardening for the first time. Others have increased the size of their existing gardens. Seed companies and garden shops say that not since the 1970s has there been such an increase in interest in growing food at home. Now many gardens across the country have been sold out for several months. In Austin, Tex., some of the gardens have a three-year waiting list.
George C. Ball Jr., owner of a company, said sales of vegetable seeds and plants are up by 40% over last year, double the average growth of the last five years. Mr. Ball argues that some of the reasons have been building for the last few years. The big one is the striking rise in the cost of food like bread and milk, together with the increases in the price of fruits and vegetables. Food prices have increased because of higher oil prices. People are now driving less, taking fewer vacations, so there is more time to garden.
29. What does the word “residents” in P aragraph l probably refer to?
A. chickens
B. tomatoes
C. gardens
D. people
30. By saying “a win-win situation all around” Ms. Gartin means that________.
A. she is happier and her garden bigger
B. she is selling more and buying less
C. she may spend less and lose weight
D. she has grown more varieties of vegetables
31. Why is vegetable gardening becoming increasingly popular?
A. More Americans are doing it for fun.
B. The price of oil is lower than before.
C. There’s a growing need for fruits.
D. The cost of living is on the rise.
32. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

How to Make Friends with Neighbors
Most people have neighbors where they live, whether it is in a house, a townhouse, or an
apartment. You want to be friends with your neighbors, not enemies. Here are some tips to make that happen.
Get to know your neighbors. If you are the ones moving in and nobody has come to greet you, introduce yourself to your neighbors. 36 If you see someone with a moving truck moving in, introduce yourself and offer to help. Take them a home-treat, such as cookies or bread, welcoming them to the neighborhood.
37 Take a loaf of bread or a plate of cookies or brownies and wish them a Merry Christmas. You can make a little bag of candy to take to them and wish them a Happy Halloween.
Invite your neighbors to dinner or a barbecue. You can get to know them over a delicious meal. Don’t ask them to bring anything.38 You can also invite your neighbor over to your house if you are watching a football, baseball, or other sport you think they might be interested in.
Be considerate to your neighbors. 39 You don’t want to be the annoying neighbors who have no consideration for others in the neighborhood. Keep your arguments within the walls of your house. Do n’t run outside yelling at one another, creating a huge scene.Nobody wants to know about your personal or family problems.
Let your children play together. Don’t discourage your children from playing with your neighbor’s children because of religion, race, or other petty things. 40
A. They will probably grow up together, so avoid creating enemies and make friends instead.
B. Wish them Happy Holidays.
C. If they offer, be gracious and accept it.
D. Go up to your neighbor’s house and say hello.
E. If you see your neighbor working out in his or her yard, offer a helping hand.
F. Don’t play super loud music in the early morning or after nine o’clock at night.
G. Help out with yard work.

The summer holiday is coming. Our class have had a discussion about what to do during the holiday. Some are in favor of staying at home. They think it's both convenient and comfortable. What's more, they can save money for other purposes. But they will lose the chance of getting to know the outside world. However, others prefer to go out for traveling since it can increase their knowledge and broaden their horizons. But they will spend more money and meet some difficulties while traveling.
In my opinion,it would be much better to stay at home, for I can do what I like, such as reading books, watching TV,and helping my parents with the housework. To all, psychological health is as important as physical health for a student during his/her growth.。
