Sample answer:
1) Artificial intelligence As you can imagine, creating these replicas via crowdsourced 2D images is extremely laborious and time-consuming. Increasingly, artificial intelligence algorithms are being used to do all the required sourcing, allowing enormous amounts of images to be cross-referenced and stored in a matter of hours. This will enable even more accurate and extensive archiving and even better replicas to be created.

Pre-reading questions
Wherever we go, we are surrounded by history. Across the globe, cultural heritage is passed down through the generations. It is in the buildings and structures around us. It is in the art and artifacts we treasure. It lives in the language we speak and the stories we tell. Technology is often seen as something that destroys the past — but ironically, it is now the most essential weapon in the battle. How is technology preserving our cultural heritage?

2) I don’t think the paintings by robots or computers can be regarded as art. First of all, painting is a way to communicate thoughts, emotions and experience. People express their happiness, anger, sorrow, and joy through paintings, which arouse the resonance of others. Robots and computers have no feelings or thoughts. They just paint for the sake of painting. Second, painting is also a form of cultural expression. There are cultural connotations behind paintings. Robots and computers are just machines, and they have no idea what culture is. Last, art should be something created by the artist of his or her own volition. But almost all the paintings by robots or computers are created not of their own volition since they are developed or controlled by humans. So I think the paintings by robots or computers can be regarded as products, but not as art.

Background information
What is computational art? Computation consists of all the changes brought about by digital technology. Art is an open set of ways of acting inventively in culture. Mixing the two together in a systematic way gives us computational art. This is a very open field, and one that is set to expand enormously in the coming years. It is where the most exciting developments in technology and in culture can already be found. This degree will place you in the middle of this fast-evolving context.

The structure of the first picture is not clear, because the locations of the trees, paths, and hills in the painting are rather chaotic. The color is monotonous, and the lines of the trunks and branches are relatively rigid. There is not a natural connection between the trunks and the leaves. It looks like a child’s drawing.

Sample answers:
Identify paintings by robots from left to right, I think the first and third pictures are drawn by robots.
1) I think the paintings by robots or computers can be regarded as art. The most important characteristic of art is its aesthetic value. The algorithms that computers use can in fact be made to generate images as varied and subtle as a human painter does. The robots and computers are programmed to accurately design the structure and color of the paintings. All this will add aesthetic value to the paintings. Audiences can also get pleasure from looking at the paintings by robots or computers. So I think these works can also be regarded as art.
As for the third picture, the outlines of the man in the painting are blurry. The man’s facial expression is stiff and unnatural. The man’s eyebrows are painted in a very rough manner, which lacks softness and fineness. The whole face lacks vitality. This painting also fails to reflect the brightness of the light.
