It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. while most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.
The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货), saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.
I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his Job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for
someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. And it has influenced(影响) us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.
56.Why was the bike so important to the couple?

B.It was their only possession.

A.From radio broadcasts. B.From a newspaper
C.From TV news. D.From a stranger.
59.What do the couple learn from their experience?
A.Strangers are usually of little help.
B.One should take care of their bike.
C.News reports make people famous.
D.An act of kindness can mean a lot.

Lying in the sun on a rock, the cougar(美洲豹) saw Jeb and his son, Tom before they saw it. Jeb put his bag down quickly and pulled his jacket open with both hands, making himself look big to the cougar, it worked. The cougar hesitated, ready to attack Jeb, but ready to forget the whole thing, too.
Jeb let go of his becked, grasped Tom and held him across his body, making a cross. Now the cougar’s enemy looked even bigger, and it rose up, ready to move away, but unfortunately Tom got scared and struggled free of Jeb.
“Tom, no” shouted his father.
But Tom broke and ran and that’s the last thing you do with a cougar. The second Tom broke free, Jeb threw himself on the cougar, just as it jumped from the rock. They hit each other in mid-air and both fell, the cougar was on Jeb in a flash, forgetting about Tom, which was what Jeb wanted.
Cougars are not as big as most people think and a determined man stands a chance, even with just his fists. As the cougar’s claws(爪子) got into his left shoulder, Jeb swung his fist at its eyes and hit hard. The animal howled(吼叫) and put its head back. Jeb followed up with his other fist. Then out of the corner of his eye. Jeb saw Tom. The boy was running back to help his father.
“Knife, Tom,” shouted Jeb.
The boy ran to his father’s bag, while Jeb stared shouting as well as hitting, to keep the cougar’s attention away from Tom. Tom got the knife and ran over to Jeb. The cougar was moving its head in and out, trying to find a way through the wall Jeb was making out of his arms. Tom swung with the knife, into the cougar’s back. It howled horribly and ran off into the mountains.
The whole fight had taken about thirty seconds.

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem(生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat(栖息地).
It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.
68.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Disappearance of African elephants
B.Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.
C.The effect of African elephants’ search for food.

71.The passage is developed mainly by.
A.showing the effect and then explaining the causes

PITTSBURGH-For most people, snakes seem unpleasant or even threatening. But Howie Choset sees in their delicate movements a way to save lives.
The 37-year-old Carnegie Mellon University professor has spent years developing snake-like robots he hopes will eventually slide through fallen buildings in search of victims trapped after natural disasters or other emergencies.
Dan Kara is president of Robotics Trends, a Northboro, Mass-based company that publishes an online industry magazine and runs robotics trade shows. He said there are other snake-like robots being developed, mainly at universities, but didn’t know of one that could climb pipes.
The Carnegie Mellon machines are designed to carry cameras and electronic sensors and can be controlled with a joystick(操纵杆). Thy move smoothly with the help of small electric motors, or servos, commonly used by hobbyists in model airplanes.
Built from lightweight materials, the robots are about the size of a human arm or smaller. They can sense which way is up, but are only as good as their human operators, Choset added.
Sam Stover, a search term manager with the Fderal Emergency Management Agency based in Indiana, said snake-type robots would offer greater mobility than equipment currently available, such as cameras attached to extendable roles.
“It just allows us to do something we’ve been able to do before,” Stover said, “We needed them yesterday.”
He said sniffer dogs are still the best search tool for rescue workers, but that they can only be used effectively when workers have access to damaged building.
Stover, among the rescue workers who handled the aftermath(后果) of Hurricane Katrina, said snake robots would have helped rescuers search flooded houses in that disaster.
Choset said the robots may not be ready for use for another five to ten years, depending on funding.
72.Which institution is responsible for the development of Choset’s robots?
A.Robotics Trends. B.Pittsburgh City Council.
C.Carnegie Mellon University. D.Federal Emergency Management Agency. 73.Choset believes that his invention __________.
A.can be attached to an electronic arm
B.can be used by hobbyists in model airplanes
C.can find victims more quickly than a sniffer dog
D.can sense its way no better than its operators
74.By saying “We needed them yesterday” (paragraph 7), Stover means that snake-like robots __________.
A.could help handle the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
B.would have been put to use in past rescue work
C.helped rescuers search flooded houses yesterday
D.were in greater need yesterday than today
75.What is the text mainly about?
A.Snake-like robots used in industries.
B.Snake-like robots made to aid in rescues.
C.The development of snake-like robots.
D.The working principles of snake-like robots.

The rain was coming down in sheets, it was already after 8:30 am, and I was late for an important meeting. I was dressed up high heeds and everything, so I called for a cab, thinking that would be faster than the subway.
It wasn’t.
After a long wait, I finally got a cab, but the traffic was moving at a snail’s pace, and the driver stopped to pick up another customer along the way.
I was really going to be late. I looked at my watch every 10 seconds. Then, just as the traffic started moving, the driver spotted a man up ahead in a wheelchair.
“________!” the driver cried, and began to pull over.
I could see another 20 minutes’ waiting, the whole period of lifting him into the cab, folding up his chair and fitting it into the cab’s small trunk then dropping him off who knows where, and everyone at work starting as I went into the meeting room mid-morning.
“What are you doing?” I exclaimed to the driver.
As the words came out of my mouth, I wanted to take them back. The wrongness of my reaction started to sink in, and it shocked me. I almost wasn’t sure who that person was who had just spoken.
The driver ignored me, and as I sat there in the back seat, he stopped the cab and got out, as did the other passenger, to attend to the man.
I got out of the cab and fled to the nearest subway station. As I ran, I understood that, while it wasn’t incumbent(有责任的) on me to take the time to help the man into the cab, I shouldn’t have complained about the driver’s stopping. I should have been able to see beyond my impatience to attend to what was most inerrant(无误的,确实的). When I thought about it at the times, and when I think about it now, this is my analysis: While I am not a particularly self-centered person, I fell prey to the self-centeredness that living a busy life in a big, fast paced city can promote. 11.Why was the author impatient that morning? (Please answer within 10 words.)
12.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?
I was sorry for what I said about the driver picking him up.
13.Please fill in the blank in the passage with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence.
(Please answer within 10 words.)
