San Francisco is going to do what many other cities have already done—provide free bicycles to the public. The mayor of San Francisco supports the bicycle program. He wants to improve the terrible traffic problems in the city.
At first, 40 to 60 bikes will be available only to city workers. People will give their old bikes to the city to use in the program. If this program is successful, one day more than 1000 bicycles will be available. Everyone, not just city workers, will be able to use these bicycles.
People in Fresno, California already have a free bicycle program. In fact, this idea began in Amsterdam over 40 years ago. These programs encourage citizens to get out of their cars and use free bikes.
Fresno’s Yellow Bike Program puts a bout forty bicycles around the city. The bikes are painted bright yellow so people know they can take them. When people take a yellow bike, they can ride to work or to shopping areas, and then leave the bike for the next rider.
Some people worry that the free bikes will be stolen. However, theft hasn’t been a problem in free-bike cities by now.
While most people think the bike program is a good idea, only a few say they will use it. “I will still drive my car,” says Joanna Green. “San Francisco has a lot of hills. My office is at the top of Potrero Hill. I don’t think I’m in good shape. And, wouldn’t I have to carry a helmet with me all the time? ”
Phil Chung agrees, “There is too much traffic. Riding a bicycle can be dangerous. There are not very many bike lanes.” He continues, “Plus, it’s too cold in the winter. And what if you ride a bike to work, and then there isn’t one to ride home? ”
Program leaders know there will be problems. But they think it’s worth trying. “It’s not th e solution for everyone,” states Sylvia Pass. “But if just one hundred people use it every day, that’s one hundred cars that aren’t on the streets, one hundred parking spaces that aren’t used. I think it’s
a great beginning. ”
59. Why does San Francisco provide bicycles to the public?
A. Because there are many bikes available.
B. Because the citizens don’t have cars of their own.
C. Because other cities have not done so.
D. Because the traffic problems are terrible.
60. The underlined words “in good shape”mean “______”.
A. beautiful
B. healthy and strong
C. tall enough
D. fat and small
C
SOMETIMES we make friends with unexpected people. For example, who would have thought that a spider would make friends with a pig? But in E. B. White's classic novel "Charlotte's Web", this is exactly what happens.
The pair will appear in a movie at the end of this year.
In the story, Wilbur is an ill-fated (倒霉的) pig. When he is born, he is so small that the farmer decides to end the pig's life. Fortunately, the farmer's daughter stops him from killing Wilbur and volunteers to raise the pig in a barnyard (谷仓前的空地) .
Wilbur grows day by day and makes many friends in the barnyard, including the spider, Charlotte. However, one day a sheep tells Wilbur that he will be served up as dinner. But, Charlotte is determined to save her friend from this danger. By making words such as "famous pig" in her web, she persuades the farmer that Wilbur is some sort of supernatural (神奇的) animal, too important to kill. After Wilbur is saved, Charlotte is so tired that she finally dies.
Unusually, the author makes a spider the heroine (女英雄) of the book. Spiders are normally creatures many people regard with fear. Charlotte does everything in her power to keep Wilbur alive. It shows how a strong friendship can last through the worst possible times.

British towns and cities have rich experience in providing accommodation (膳宿) for students and there are many cheap , comfortable and safe places to live .
You should always try to arrange your long-term accommodation before leaving home. Your school should be able to help you with it. When you are accepted by a school, you will usually
receive a package of information including accommodation information. Complete the accommodation application form and return it before the deadline. If the school accommodation is not available , the accommodation advisory(顾问的)office of your school can help you find private accommodation .
If you’re coming to the UK for the first time, accommodation provided by your school might be the most suitable choice. This is a choice taken by more than half of the international students. There are plenty of advantages of living in accommodation provided by the school: you can live close to where you are studying; you will get to know other students easily; and most importantly, you will be living in a safer environment. This kind of accommodation is also affordable: a room in a self-catering(自己做饭的)student apartment usually costs from 180 to 360 pounds per month. To live in a place where meals are included you are expected to pay from 320 to 400 pounds per month.
If you choose to rent accommodation in private houses, the choices are lodging, private hostels (招待所)and bedsits(卧室兼起居室). In a lodging, your landlord / landlady lives in the same house, possibly with his / her family, and prepares meals for you. For hostel accommodation and lodgings where meals are included, you can expect to pay from 300 to 400 pounds per month. For a bedsit, you would pay from 200 to 380 pounds per month.

Dear Annie,
We haven’t seen each other for a long time. I’m glad to introduce the school I’m studying in to you. Our school begins classes before 8 a.m. every day. The size of classes is bigger than that of classes in my old school and the number of the students in each class is more than 50 on average. I have so many classes and so much heavy homework. It is a struggle for me to attend activities after class. I also have no much time to learn by myself. But most of the students study very hard to enter key universities, which are their dreams. Not only teachers but also classmates are very kind to me. They help me a lot. I feel very lucky to experience this different way of life. I learned
a lot here.
I hope you have a chance to come here and study with me together.
Yours sincerely,
Jackson

M: Trust me, I won't. I'll keep you posted.
W: You have my address?
M: Well, I have your e-mail address.
W: OK! I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck and have a good trip!

W: Jim, how did you enjoy your trip to the countryside?
M: It was fun.
W: Will you tell me more?
M: Well, we drove to the village in the morning. What a wonderful sight!
W: So you stayed in the village?
M: Yes. The village were so kind that they gave us delicious food. They sang and danced to welcome us.
W: Good. What did you do then?
M: We had lunch in the village and then went to the lake beside the mountain. The water was so clear.
W: Did you go for a swim there?
M: Sure. We really had a good time and I hope I will go there next weekend.

M: Do you mean to tell me not to care for modern art? Not any of it?
W: That's right. I don't understand it and I don't like it.
M: That's a very narrow-minded viewpoint. If you don't understand it, how can you say that you don't like it?
W: Perhaps I am a little conservative. I really can't keep pace with so many changes nowadays. So, I just can't imagine that the modern artist is really serious.
M: I won't argue with you, but I think you're being unfair. The modern artist is different from traditional artist in his work.
W: Are you trying to tell me these strange paintings mean anything? A child could paint better than that.
M: I guess there's no point in discussing the matter any further. You have your opinion and I have mine.
W: I agree there are two sides to everything, but this time I see only one of them.
M: Well, I'm attempting to explain that the modern artist is trying to get across his personal feelings about the world around him.
W: Then he should keep his feelings to himself.

In my spoken English class, I asked the students about their impressions of their university life. To my surprise, many of them expressed disappointment. After their highly controlled high school lives, they were having difficulty adjusting to the free time in the university. When I asked them to describe their high school lives, many of them told me they got up at six in the morning
and studied until ten at night. Most of this time was spent at school, doing piles of homework to help them prepare for the university entrance exams.
Once they entered the university, in my opinion, the students are not expected to devote all their waiting hours to studying, they should also take an active part in social activities. Therefore, they should learn to divide their time outside of the class between sports and clubs. What's more, they should spend some time watching TV and chatting with their roommates. These activities are useful in helping them prepare for their future. But what struck me most was that many of them did not seem particularly happy about their new found freedom. As they had so many choices, they felt that no matter what they were doing, they should be doing something else. That's why they were not happy.
To those students, my advice was, get used to it and learn to make decisions for yourselves.。
