Description
The 2H22 series pressure regulator is a two-stage pressure regulator which is a combination of the 2H48 and 2H30 regulating valves.
The 2H22 series valve regulates pneumatic system air pressure at two levels. The first stage regulates air at low pressure for gyro instruments. To increase pressure for deice, the normally-open solenoid is energized to override low pressure stage regulation. System pressure then rises to the second stage valve regulating pressure. Refer to the generic deice system below.

Operation
Low Pressure:
During operation, pressure is applied to the lower side of the diaphragm in the low pressure stage regulator inner housing. An orifice in the center of the diaphragm assembly rivet allows air to escape through the normally-open solenoid. As system pressure increases, its force will lift the diaphragm from its seat and discharge excess air to atmosphere to maintain constant system pressure.
Operation
High Pressure:
During deice operation, the normally-open solenoid is energized, closing the internal air vent passage to atmosphere. Air moving through the diaphragm orifice causes pressure to increase on top of the diaphragm. Thus the diaphragm is forced on its seat (closed), preventing discharge of air and causing system pressure to increase.
System pressure increases to a level established by the second stage regulator valve. The top side of the diaphragm assembly of the high pressure stage regulator is vented to atmospheric pressure through the cover vent hole. System pressure acting on the lower side of the diaphragm assembly, provides an opposing force to the adjustable extension spring. These opposing forces work to control the discharge of excess air, thus regulating system pressure.
Trouble-Shooting
Low pressure diaphragm rupture, leakage at rivets, a blocked diaphragm orifice, or failure of the normally-open solenoid valve to close will prevent pressure from building to high pressure levels.
If low pressure diaphragm rupture or leakage at rivets is experiences, replace the valve.A blocked diaphragm orifice may be opened with .010 wire.
Failure of the normally-open solenoid to close may be caused by contamination from carbon dust. In this event, clean with shop air or alcohol. If the solenoid will not activate after cleaning, replace the solenoid. Failure of the normally-open solenoid to vent to atmosphere even if electrically de-energized will keep the system at second stage pressure levels and increase wear on the air pumps.
Leakage at either stage diaphragm valve seat or adjusting screw will cause a reduction in pressure at either regulator setting. In case of leakage, replace the valve.
Note:
Each time a pressure regulating valve is replaced a pneumatic system check should be conducted to ensure proper operation and the correct pressure settings in accordance with the aircraft’s maintenance manual. If action outlined in the trouble-shooting section of this instruction does not identify your problem, contact Airborne Technical Services at 1-800-382-8422.
