Some proceed very slowly throughout; others dash along too quickly and then have to regress. Poor readers in particular may lack the ability to vary their manner of reading according to the type of reading matter and to their intentions in reading it. A good reader can move at great speed through the text of a novel or similar light reading matter. He may be able to skim a page, picking up a word or two here and there, and gain a general idea of what the text is about without really reading it. In reading more difficult material, with the intention of taking in the whole of it, he will proceed more slowly, but even then he will vary his pace, concentrating on the key words and passages, perhaps re-reading them several times and pass more quickly over the remainder. A less efficient reader tends to maintain the same speed whatever the material he reads. Consequently, even light reading matter gives him little pleasure because he reads so slowly. But this pace may be too fast for really difficult material which requires special concentration at difficult points.A type of reading which necessitates careful attention to detail is proofreading, in which the reader, in order to detect misprints in a sample print, has to notice not so much the meaning of what he reads as the exact shape and order of letters and words in the text. This is extremely difficult for most people, since they are accustomed to overlooking such details. In fact, considerable practice is required to practice this task efficiently and it can be done only by reading very slowly, and by paying comparatively little attention to the general meaning of the text.第1题The author claims that there is a difference in reading speed______.A.among readers who have different experienceB.among all the readersC.between the poorly educated and the highly educatedD.among the highly educated people第2题A good reader is a reader who______.A.concentrates on the wonderful part of the articleB.always reads slowly and carefullyC.changes his speed according to the kind of textD.changes his speed according to the interesting of the text第3题The author says that when reading a novel, a good reader can quickly read______.A.every part of the bookB.the most wonderful part in the bookC.the major part in the bookD.the scientific part of the book第4题The last two sentences of the first paragraph mean that______.A.a reading speed too slow for a difficult book is just right for a non-serious oneB.a reading speed too slow for a non-serious book may be too fast for a difficult oneC.A reading speed too fast for difficult material is just right for a non-serious book is also too slow for a difficult oneD.A reading speed too slow for a non-serious book is also too slow for a difficult one第5题Which of the following can be the tide of the passage?A.Reading and listening.B.Difference between highly educated and poorly educated.C.Practice reading skill.D.Difference in the speed and efficiency of reading.下一题(6~10/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from allthe terrible things that have been shown on the screen.Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count.Unfortunately, television´s influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn´t do funny things like the people on children´s programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That´s the time it takes on the screen.第6题In the past, many young people______.A.knew the effects of warB.went in for politicsC.liked to save the wounded in warsD.were willing to be soldiers第7题Now with TV people can______.A.discuss politics at an information centerB.show more interest in politicsC.make their own decisions on political affairsD.express their opinions freely第8题The author thinks that TV advertisements______.A.are not reliable on the wholeB.are useless to peopleC.are a good guide to adultsD.are very harmful to the young第9题Which is NOT true according to the passage?A.People have become used to crimes now.B.On a TV screen some problems can be solved quickly.C.People now like to read books with pictures.D.The adults are less violent than the young.第10题From the passage, we can conclude that______.A.children should keep away from TV programs should be improvedC.children´s books should have pictures has a deep influence on the young上一题下一题(11~15/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages, I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic. Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and above all, the insects.I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil, reading about other people´s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do notmake a scientist; one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of born worlds.第11题According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be______.A.full of enthusiasmB.self-disciplinedC.full of ambitionD.knowledgeable第12题The first paragraph tells us that the author______.A.lost his hearing when he was a childB.didn´t like his brothers and sistersC.was born to a naturalist´s familyD.was interested in flowers and inserts in his childhood第13题The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he______.A.just reads about other people´s observations and discoverieses up with solutions in most natural waysC.has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmeticcks some of the qualities required of scientist第14题The author can´t remember his relatives clearly because______.A.he was fully occupied with observing natureB.he didn´t live very long with themC.the family was extremely largeD.he was too young when he lived with them第15题Which of the following statement is true?A.The author believes that a born naturalist cannot be a scientist.B.The author´s brothers and sisters were good at music and languages.C.The author read a lot of books about the natural world and the oil industry.D.The author spent a lot of time working on riddles.上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. They died when the ship went down. Men stood on the deck and smoked cigarettes. They died, too. This behavior is puzzling to economists, who like to believe that people tend to act in their own self-interest. "There was no pushing," says DavidSavage, an economist at Queensland University in Australia who has studied witness reports from the survivors. It was "very, very orderly behavior.´´Savage has compared the behavior of the passengers on the Titanic with those on the Lusitania, another ship that also sank at about the same time. But when the Lusitania went down, the passengers panicked. There were a lot of similarities between these two events. These two ships were both luxury ones, they had a similar number of passengers and a similar number of survivors. The biggest difference, Savage concludes, was time. The Lusitania sank in less than 20 minutes. But for the Titanic, it was two-and-a-half hours. "If you´ve got an event that lasts two-and-a-half hours, social order will take over and everybody will behave in a social manner,"Savage says. "If you´re going down in under 17 minutes, basically it´s instinctual." On the Titanic, social order ruled, and it was women and children first. On the Lusitania, instinct won out. The survivors were largely the people who could swim and get into the lifeboats.Yes, we´re self-interested, Savage says. But we´re also part of a society. Given time, social norms can beat our natural self-interest. A hundred years ago, women and children always went first. Men were stoic. On the Titanic, there was enough time for these norms to become forceful. 第16题According to the author, economists were confused because______.A.people´s behavior was disorderly on the TitanicB.people did not act in their own interest on the TitanicC.most men did not act in their own interest on the LusitaniaD.women and children could not climb into the lifeboats第17题The expression "won out" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to "______".A.took the upper handB.went out of controlC.ran wildD.shut down第18题According to David Savage, ______was a critical factor in determining people´s behavior in the sinking of these two ships.A.social orderB.placeC.instinctD.time第19题According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A.Both ships were expensive ones.B.A similar number of women and children from both ships survived.C.About the same number of people from each ship died.D.Both ships had a similar number of passengers.第20题Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A.Why Didn´t Musicians Play on the Lusitania?B.Why Did Musicians Play on the Titanic?C.Why Didn´t Passengers Panic on the Titanic?D.Why Did Men Smoke on the Titanic?上一题下一题(1/29)Vocabulary and StructureDirections: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. Each couple provided four photographs —one photo of each partner at the time of their marriage and another photo of each partner twenty-five or more years later. All background was cut from the photos to remove any clues. The photos were then displayed in groups: a random grouping of the persons at the time of their marriage and another random grouping of the same persons who took photographs later. Some testees were asked to pick out the partners. They failed totally with the first group. Their judgments were no better than chance. But with the photos taken twenty-five or more years after the marriage, the testees were quite successful with the most happily-married couples.Dr. Aiken believes there are several reasons why couples grow alike. One reason has something to do with imitation. One person tends to copy or do the same as someone else without knowing it. He says human begins to imitate the expressions of the faces of their loved ones. “Another possible reason,”he says,“is the common experience of the couples.”There is a tendency for people who have the same life experience to change their faces in similar ways. For example, if a couple have suffered from a lot of sad experiences, their faces are likely to change in a similar way.16.Dr. Aiken cut the background from the photos for the purpose of _________.[A]imitating the couples’ life[B]grouping the couples again[C]leaving no trace for the testees[D]giving the testees more chances17.The underlined sentence “Their judgments were no better than chance.”implies that the testees _________.[A]did a good job in making their choices[B]had difficulty in picking out the partners[C]had no chance to make the right judgments[D]did better with the first group than with the second18.The underlined word“imitate”(in Para. 2) has a similar meaning to _________.[A]copy [B] change [C] know [D] suffer19.From the passage we can draw the conclusion that _________.[A]couples who look alike can live longer[B]most partners have been proved to grow alike[C]the influence between partners can be quite strong[D]happily-married couples are often richer than others20.The main purpose of the passage is to _________.[A]explain why couples grow alike[B]tell how couples like each other[C]discuss the function of marriage[D]describe the life of happily married couplesPassage ThreeThe three biggest lies in America are: (1)“The check is in the mail”,(2)“Of course I’ll respect you in the morning”,and (3)“It was a computer error”.Of these three little white lies, the worst is the third. It’s the only one that can never be true. Today, if a bank statement cheats you out of $ 900 that way, you know what the clerk is sure to say,”It was a computer error.”Nonsense. The computer is reporting nothing more than what the clerk typed into it.The most annoying case of all is when the computerized cashier in the grocery store shows that an item costs more than it actually does. If the innocent buyer points out the mistake, the checker, bagger, and manager all come together and offer the familiar explanation:“It was a compute error.”It wasn’t, of course that computerized cashier is really nothing more than an electric event. The eye reads the Universal Product Code —chat bar of black and white lines in a corner of the package —and then checks the code against a price list stored in memory. If the price list is right, you’ll be charged accurately.Grocery stores update the price list each day —that is, somebody sits at a keyboard and types in the prices. If the price they type in is too high, there are only two explanations: carelessness or dishonesty. But somehow“a computer error”is supposed to excuse everything. One reason we let people hide behind a computer is the common misperception that huge, modern computers are electric brain with“artificial intelligence”.At some point there might be a machine with intelligence but none exists today. The smartest computer on Earth right now is no more intelligent than your average pen. At this point in the development of computers, the only thing any machine can do is what a human has instructed it to do.21.Of the three lies, the one about computer is the worst because the computer itself_________.[A]says nonsense[B]cheats customers[C]cannot make the error[D]does not admit its error22.According to the author, a computerized cashier is really just _________.[A]a machine to count money[B]a machine to receive money[C]an instrument to print codes[D]an instrument to read codes23.Grocery store price lists are updated by _________.[A]a computer[B]a keyboard[C]an employee[D]an electric brain24.The last paragraph of the passage implies that computers _________.[A]are very clever[B]never make mistakes[C]have a good memory[D]are controlled by men25.Which of the following describes the main idea of the passage?[A]Computers are stupid and inefficient.[B]Computer errors are due to its dishonesty.[C]Computers help stores update the price list.[D]Computer errors are actually human errors.Passage FourI came across an old country guidebook the other day. It listed all the tradesmen in each village, and it was impressive to see the past variety of services which were available on one’s own doorstep in the late Victorian countryside.Nowadays a traveler in rural England might conclude that the only village tradesmen still flourishing were either selling frozen food to the villagers or selling antiques to visitors. Nevertheless, this would really be a false impression. On the surface, there has been a decline of village commerce, but its power is still remarkable. Our local grocer’s shop, for example, is actually expanding in spite of the competition from supermarkets in the nearest town. Women sensibly prefer to go there and exchange the local news while doing their shopping, instead of queuing up at a supermarket. And the grocer knows well that personal service has a considerable cash value. His prices may be a bit higher than those in the town, but he will deliver anything at any time. His assistants think nothing of bicycling down the village street in their lunch hour to take a piece of cheese to an old retired woman who sent her order by word of mouth with a friend who happened to be passing. The richer customers telephone their shopping lists and the goods are on their doorsteps within an hour. They have only to hint at a fancy for some commodity outside the usual stock and the grocer, a red faced-figure, instantly obtains it for them.26.Nowadays the commercial services in the village are _________.[A]still very active[B]quickly declining[C]unable to flourish[D]personal to visitors27.The local grocer’s shop is expanding because _________.[A]the competition there is weak[B]it is a place for women to chat[C]it provides good personal service[D]the goods there are more valuable28.Which of the following is true about the supermarkets?[A]Prices there are much higher.[B]Customers often have to queue up.[C]Customers can order by telephone.[D]Their personal services are satisfactory.29.How do the village grocer’s assistants feel about giving extra service?[A]They don’t think it a trouble.[B]They don’t think it worthwhile.[C]They don’t consider it a good deal.[D]They don’t consider it a pleasant experience.30.One special feature of the village shop is that _________.[A]there is a very wide range of goods available[B]customers can order goods by word of mouth[C]customers have to order goods one hour earlier[D]there is a list of goods to be delivered to doorstepsPart Ⅲ Vocabulary and Structure (20minutes 20points)Directions:There are 20 incomplete sentences in this part. If you hold too tightly to your partner, it's going to cause resentment and anger. If you're completely separate, you'll both be lonely and disconnected. You need balance. So you have to talk about how you'll achieve that."The right balance It's different for every couple. "Having a conversation about time can be difficult, but it's important for both partners to process those feelings out loud," Dr. Stephen says. "You should not be accusing and act as a judge—ask the difficult questions, but do it in a loving way. You could say something like, 'How are we going to be as individuals and how are we going to be as a couple' "Barbara and Chris Christensen have achieved the balance that works for them. In addition to daily routines that keep them close —including about 10 minutes for a daily check-in and about a half hour of relaxation time—they each maintain separate interests and friendships."We have found that we need time apart," Barbara says. "I have a group of women friends that I have known for the last 30 years. We have dinner out once a month. We women also have parties and weekend or weeklong vacations as a group at a beach or somewhere.Chris, a former fighter pilot, has many aviation-oriented (航空的) groups and friends and also a poker-playing group. This is not always easy to provide as their behavior can sometimes be irritating. If they get excited or upset then they may become more difficult to look after. Although sometimes it can be extremely difficult, it is best to be patient and not to get upset yourself. You should always encourage old people to do as much as possible for themselves but be ready to lend a helping hand when necessary.Failing memory makes it difficult for the person to recall all the basic kinds of information we take for granted. The obvious way to help in this situation is to supply the information that is missing and help them make sense of what is going on. You must use every opportunity to provide information but remember to keep itsimple and straightforward.“Good morning, Mum. This is Fiona, your daughter. It is eight o’clock, so if you get up now, we can have breakfast downstairs.”When the elderly makes confused statements e.g. about going out to his or her old employment or visiting a dead relative, correct in a calm matter-of-fact fashion: “You don’t work in the office any more. You are retired now. Will you come and help me with the dishes”We rely heavily on the information provided by signposts, clocks, calendars and newspapers. These assist us to organize and direct our behavior. Confused old people need these aids all the time to compensate for their poor memory. Encourage them to use reminder boards or diaries for important coming events and label the contents of different cupboards and drawers. Many other aids such as information cards, old photos, scrap books, and addresses or shopping list could help in individual case.16. Why can’t we sometimes keep calm in front of old peopleA)Because old people sometimes annoy us.B)Because old people sometimes don’t understand us.C)Because we are sometimes in a bad mood.D)Because we are sometimes in a hurry.17. What does the author encourage us when we talk with old peopleA) To do as little as possible.B) To do as much as they can.C) To help others when needed.D) To be patient and not get upset.18. How should we provide information to old people with failing memoriesA) By being helpful.B) By being direct.C) By being sensitive.D) By being obvious.19. What is the main idea of the passageA)What happens to old people with failing memory.B)How to help old people with failing memory.C)Why old people have poor memory.D)How to improve bad memory.Passage ThreeQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. It is often the case that when something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say,”Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault.” or“I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault;the car broke down.” It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on the person. You should accept that the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do hisjob well. This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stop on for success.21. According to the passage, winners tend to _______.A) deal with problems rather than blame othersB) meet with fewer difficulties in their livesC) have responsible and able colleaguesD) blame themselves rather that others22.The word “remedy” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “_______”.A) avoid B) acceptC) improve D) consider23. D) A Winner’s Achievement.Passage FourQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. In order to go ahead, large companies need a way to reach the savings of the public at large. The same problem, on a smaller scale, faces practically every company trying to develop new products and create new jobs. There can be little prospect of raising the sort of sums needed from friends and people we know, and while banks may agree to provide short-term finance, they are generally unwilling to provide money on a permanent basis for long term projects. So companies turn to the public, inviting people to lend them money, or take a share in the business in exchange for a share in future profits. This they do by issuing stocks and shares in the businessthrough the Stock Exchange. By doing so,they can put into circulation the savings of individuals and institutions, both at home and overseas. When the saver needs his money back, he does not have to go to the company with whom he originally placed it. Instead, he sells his shares through a stockbroker to some other saver who is seeking to invest his money. Many of the services needed both by industry and by each of us are provided by the Government or by local authorities. Without hospitals, roads, electricity, telephones, railways, this country could not function. All these require continuous spending on new equipment and new development if they are to serve us properly, requiring more money than is raised though taxes alone. The Government, local authorities, and nationalized industries therefore frequently need to borrow money to finance major capital spending, and they, too, come to the Stock Exchange. There is hardly a man or woman in this country whose job or whose standard of living does not depend on the ability of his or her employers to raise money to finance new development. In one way or another, this new money must come from the savings of the country. The Stock Exchange exists to provide a channel through which these savings can reach those who need finance.26.Almost all companies involved in new production must ______.A) rely on their own financial resourcesB) persuade the banks to provide long-term loanC) borrow large sums of money from friends and people they knowD) depend on the population as a whole for finance27.The money which enables these companies to go ahead with theirprojects is ______.A) invested in different companies on the Stock ExchangeB) exchanged for part ownership in the Stock ExchangeC) raised by the selling of shares in the companiesD) repaid to its original owners as soon as possible28.When the savers want their money back, they ______.A) put their shares in the company back on the marketB) ask another company to obtain their money for themC) look for other people to borrow money fromD) transfer their money to a more successful company29.All the essential services on which we depend are ______.A) run by the Government or our local authoritiesB) in constant need of financial supportC) financed wholly by rates and taxesD) unable to provide for the needs of the population30.The Stock Exchange makes it possible for the government, localauthorities and nationalized industries ______.A) to make everybody lend money to themB) to borrow as much money as they wishC) to make certain everybody saves moneyD) to raise money to finance new developmentsPart III Vocabulary and Structure (25 minutes)Directions:There are 25 incomplete sentences in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition (学会) of each new skill-the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child: This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.Patents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.11. Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills ________.A) should be avoidedB) is universal among parentsC) sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD) will make him lose interest in learning new things12. In the process of children’s learning new skills parents ________.A) should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB) should not expect too much of themC) should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD) should create as many learning opportunities as possible13. The second paragraph mainly tells us that ________.A) parents should be strict with their childrenB) parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC) parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD) parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation14. The word “precept” (Line 3, Para. 3) probably means “________”.A) idea B) punishmentC) behavior D) instruction15. In moral matters, parents should ________.A) observe the rules themselvesB) be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC) forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD) consistently ensure the security of their childrenPassage TwoQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. These days we take for granted the wide variety of music available on the radio. But, this wasn’t always the case. In the early days of radio, stations were capable of broadcasting only a narrow range of sounds, which was all right for the human voice but music didn’t sound very good. There was also a great deal of crackling and other static noises that further interfered with the quality of the sound.A man named Edwin Armstrong, who was a music lover, set out to change this. He invented FM radio, a technology that allowed stations to send a broad range of frequencies that greatly improved the quality of the music. Now, you’d think that this would have made him a millionaire; it didn’t. Radio stations at that time had invested enormous amounts of money in the old technology. So the last thing they wanted was to invest millions more in the new technology. Nor did they want to have to compete with other radio stations that had a superior sound and could put them out of business. So they pressured the Federal Communications Commission —the department of the United States government that regulates radio stations — to put restrictive regulations on FM radio. The result was that its use was limited to a very small area around New England. Of course as we all know, Edwin Armstrong’s FM technology eventually prevailed and was adopted by thousands of stations round the world. But this took years of court battles and he never saw how itcame to affect the lives of almost everyone.16. What is the passage mainly about?A) The invention of musical recording equipment.B) The role of government in mass communications.C) The emergence of a new technology.D) The similarities between old and new radio stations.17. What was the main disadvantage of early radio broadcasting?A) It was very expensive.B) The sound quality was poor.C) It could only transmit a human voice.D) The signal was transmitted over a small area.18. What was the purpose of Edwin Armstrong by inventing FM radio?A) To make it possible for radio stations to broadcast a broad range of sounds.B) To make other radio stations spend a large sum of money on more research.C) To make himself world-famous and therefore earn more money.D) To make radio stations compete with one another.19. Why did the owners of radio stations react negatively to Armstrong’s invention?A) Its use was too strictly regulated. B) They thought it was unsafe.C) It threatened their business. D) It was of poor quality.20. What does the passage imply about Edwin Armstrong?A) He became a millionaire from his invention.B) He was an accomplished musician.C) He worked for the Federal Communications Commission.D) He died before FM became popular.Passage ThreeQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Psychologist George Spilich and colleagues at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, decided to find out whether, as many smokers say, smoking helps them to “think and concentrate. Spilich put young non-smokers, active smokers and smokers deprived (被剥夺) of cigarettes through a series of tests. In the first test, each subject (试验对象) sat before a computer screen and pressed a key as soon as he or she recognized a target letter among a grouping of 96. In this simple test, smokers, deprived smokers and non-smokers performed equally well. The next test was more complex, requiring all to scan sequences of 20 identical letters and respond the instant one of the letters transformed into a different one. Non-smokers were faster, but under the stimulation of nicotine (尼古丁), active smokers were faster than deprived smokers. In the third test of short-term memory, non-smokers made the fewest errors, but deprived smokers committed fewer errors than active smokers. The fourth test required people to read a passage, then answer questions about it. Non-smokers remembered 19 percent more of the most important information than active smokers, and deprived smokers bested those who had smoked a cigarette just before testing. Active smokers tended not only to have poorer memories but also had trouble separating important information from insignificant details.“As our tests became more complex,” s ums up Spilich, “non-smokers performed better than smokers by wider and wider margins” He predicts, “smokers might perform adequately at m any jobs-until they got complicated. A smoking airline pilot could fly adequately if no problems arose, but if something went wrong, smoking might damage his mental capacity.”21. The purpose of George Spilich’s experiments is ________.A) to test whether smoking has a positive effect on the mental capacity of smokersB) to show how smoking damages people’s mental capacityC) to prove that smoking affects people’s regular performanceD) to find out whether smoking helps people’s short-term memory22. George Spilich’s experiment was conducted in such a way as to ________.A) compel the subjects to separate major information from minor detailsB) put the subjects through increasingly complex testsC) check the effectiveness of nicotine on smokersD) register the prompt responses of the subjects23. The word “bested” (Line 3, Para. 5) most probably means ________.A) beat B) enviedC) caught up with D) made the best of24. Which of the following statements is true?A) Active smokers in general performed better than deprived smokers.B) Active smokers responded more quickly than the other subjects.C) Non-smokers were not better than other subjects in performing simple tasks.D) Deprived smokers gave the slowest responses to the various tasks.25. They dance, drink, parade, and feast. A traditional meal includes meat, cabbage and a special Irish beer called Guinness.St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday that can be traced back more than one thousand years ago, and it is related to a boy named St. Patrick who became an Irish saint when he grew up.He was born to a wealthy family in Wales around the year 385 AD. But when he was sixteen, a band of raiders(劫掠者)took him as a slave to what is now the neighboring island of Ireland.Patrick lived there for several years. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single bar through the Centre of the letter that indicates your choice.Passage 1The top of the world is a wonderland. In winter, the temperature often falls to -30 degrees Fahrenheit and the sun never rises. The ocean is surrounded by frozen ground. There are few people or trees, but to polar bears, the Arctic is home.Polar bears have thick fur, big paws and other features that make them well prepared for life in their tough environment. In fact, they need the Arctic sea ice for survival. But climate change is causing larger and larger areas of summer sea ice to melt. Experts say that if warming patterns continue, the Arctic could be free of summer sea ice by 2050. That may cause two-thirds of the word's 20,000 polar bears to be gone by then too.Polar bears can’t survive for long on land. Seals are their main source of food. The only place where polar bears can hunt seals is on the ice. Although these bears are strong swimmers, they are no match for lightning swift seals in the water. A polar bear has brilliantly clever strategies to overcome this disadvantage. In winter the bear waits motionl ess beside a seal’s breathing hole, which is a narrow tunnel through the ice. Often many hours pass before the seal comes up for air and the bear kills it with a powerful blow of its paw. In summer, the polar bears that live on land eat very little and wait for the sea ice to returnWith the sea ice forming later in the year and melting earlier, polar bears do not have enough opportunity to hunt and eat. Less sea ice makes it harder for the bears to catch the seals. The bears must swim longer distances between ice packs, and they can’t always make it. The ice is also getting thinner. These conditions can cause polar-bear cubs to become separated from their mothers, who provide them with food.Steven Amstrup is the chief scientist of Polar Bear International北极熊国际. The group aims to save the bears and their home. "The more people who see polar bears and understand their difficult situations, the better the chance we’ll alter our warmingpath in time to save them," he says.11. Which is the best title for the passage?A. Climate Change in the ArcticB. How to Protect the EnvironmentC. The Arctic Is Home to Polar BearsD. Polar Bears in Danger12. Where do polar bears usually hunt seals?A. On land.B. In open water.C. In openings in the sea iceD. At the bottom of the sea.13. Two-thirds of the world's polar bears may disappear by 2050 as global warming continues.D. The growing distance between ice packs is not a problem for polar bears, because they are excellent swimmers.15. What’s the mission of Polar Bears International?A. Saving energy.B. Conducting scientific research.C. Seeking international cooperation.D. Saving polar bears and their home.Passage 2The exact number of English words is not known. The large dictionaries have over half a million entries, but many of these are compound words ( schoolroom, sugar bowl) or different derivatives of the same word ( rare-rarely, rarefy) , and a good many are obsolete words to help us read older literature. Dictionaries do not attempt to cover completely words that we can draw on: the informal vocabulary, especially slang, localism, the terms of various occupations and professions; words used only occasionally by scientists and specialists in many fields; foreign words borrowed for use in English; or many new words or new senses of words that come into use every year and that may or may not be used long enough to warrant being included. It would be conservative to say that there are over a million English words that any of us might meet in our listening and reading and that we may draw on in our speaking and writing.Professor Seashore concluded that first-graders enter school with at least 24, 000 words and add 5,000 each year so that they leave high school with at least 80,000. These figures are for recognition vocabulary, the words we understand when we reador hear them. Our active vocabulary, the words we use in speaking and writing is considerably smaller. You cannot always produce a word exactly when you want it. But consciously using the words you recognize in reading will help get them into your active vocabulary. Occasionally in your reading pay particular attention to these words, especially when the subject is one that you might well write or talk about. Underline or make a list of words that you feel a need for and look up the less familiar ones in a dictionary. And then before very long find a way to use some of them. Once you know how they are pronounced and what they stand for, you can safely use them.16. According to the author’s estimation, there are ____ words in English.A. more than half a millionB. at least 24,000C. at least 80,000D. more than a million17. The italicized word "obsolete" in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to _____A. no longer in useB. profoundC. colorfulD. common18. One's recognition vocabulary is ______.A. less often used than his active vocabularyB. smaller than his active vocabularyC. as large as his active vocabularyD. much larger than his active vocabulary19. The author does not suggest getting recognition vocabulary into active vocabulary by _____.A. making a list of words you need and looking up the new ones in a dictionaryB. spending half an hour studying the dictionaryC. consciously using the words you recognize in readingD. trying to use the words you recognize20. From the passage we learn that _____.A. dictionaries completely cover the words we can make use ofB. "schoolroom" is used in the passage as an example of a specialized termC. once you know how a word is pronounced and what it represents, you have turned it into your active wordD. active vocabulary refers to words we understand when we read and hear them Passage 3In 1991, when announced to be HIV positive, "Magic" Johnson became the face of a disease that the public still had a lot to learn about. The basketball star established the Magic Johnson Foundation that year and took a leading role on the public relations and fund-raising fronts in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Fifteen years later, there is still more work to do."A lot of times, what happens is that the poster is not enough," Johnson says, motioning to his likeness on the blackboard behind him. 'So I have to get out and tell them myself, like I'm doing here today." Johnson is now talking to an assembly at Boys and Girls High School in his neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y. The crowd is a few hundred students in a mostly black, working-class neighborhood. Thus event is the fourth of a 10-city speaking tour that is organized for minority communities.According to drug maker Abbot, half of the more than 1 million Americans living with HIV are black. African-American men are being diagnosed with the disease at a rate 10 times as high as that of white men. For women, the situation is even worse. The rate of diagnosis for African-American women is 23 times as high as that for their white counterparts."Right now, we don't have a solution on how to combat it, so we're trying to do some different things than what has happened before," Johnson says.Getting the word out is what draws Johnson to black neighborhood high schools such as this one, and the message he brings with him is a practical one. "The safest sex is no sex," he says. "But, in reality, we know only a certain number of people are going to hear that. Then I hit them with Hey, if you’re going to do it, you’ve got to protect yourself and your partner."Hopefully, by talking realistically instead of avoiding the issues, Johnson can help make the next generation of African-Americans less likely to have HIV and AIDS. The government has recognized it too, abandoning rules in 2011 that had formerly stopped 16 to 24-year-olds from doing unpaid work while claiming unemployment benefit. But moving from that to forcing them to work without pay in order to collect these benefits has proved a big step.More than one million young people in Britain are unemployed, the highest number since the mid-1980s. Keen both to cut the welfare bill and to avoid the depressed future wages that may result from early unemployment, the government has introduced an ambitious program of reform to get youngsters off welfare and into work. A key part of it is ensuring that no one gets benefit from the government for long; ministers are keen to avoid what happened after the early-1980s recession, when unemployment continued in some parts of the country for a long time after the economy began to improve. To help young people into work, ministers had persuaded lots of employers, including bakery chains, bookshops and supermarkets, to take on unemployed youths, who receive work experience but no pay, with the prospect of a proper job for those who shine. Some 35,000 youngsters participated last year; half found paid work soon after finishing the scheme. The idea of getting young adults used to showing up for work is popular with voters: according to a survey published in February, about 60% of people support the program. Equally attractive was the option of compelling them to work: Under the existing arrangements youngsters could choose whether or not to accept a place, but if they dropped out after the end of the first week, they stood to lose up to two weeks' benefits.Yet the scheme has also polarized opinion: a third of people are consistently opposed. Following a noisy "Right to Work" campaign that accused employers of co-operating secretly with the government in "forced labor", several firms dropped out of the program. To prevent this from getting worse, Chris Grayling, an employment minister, admitted that young people could leave their work experience at any time without being punished for doing so. This not only halted the flight of employers ( for now, at least) but also enabled him to announce that new firms have agreed to take part in the program.26. It is largely attributed to the Taoism affection to nature. There are two most preferred topics in traditional Chinese paintings. One kind depicts various happy scenes of family life in which the elderly play chess and drink tea, young men farm and harvest in the field, women weave or sew clothes and kids play in the outside. The other depicts the recreations of rural life. In these paintings, fishermen fish on the lake, farmers hew or collect herbs on the hills and scholars compose poems or paintings under pine trees. These two themes respectively represent the ideal life of Confucianism and Taoism.Part V Writing (15 points)Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic "Online Shopping". Each statementcontains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information isderived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Answer thequestions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet.Addicted, Really?A)M ental-health specialists disagree over whether to classify compulsive online behavior as addiction—and how to treat it. CRAIG SMALLWOOD, a disabled American war veteran, spent more than 20,000 hours over five years playing an online role-playing game called “Lineage II”. When NCsoft, the South Korean firm behind the game, accused him of breaking the game’s rules and banned him, he was plunged into depression, severe paranoia(偏执) and hallucinations(幻想). He spent three weeks in hospital. He sued NCsoft for fraud and negligence(过失), demanding over $9m in damages and claiming that the company acted negligentlyby failing to warn him of the danger that he would become “addicted” to the game.B)B ut does it make sense to talk of addiction to online activity? Mental-health specialists say three online behaviors can become problematic for many people: video games, pornography(色情作品)and messaging via e-mail and social networks. But there is far less agreement about whether any of this should be called “Internet addiction”—or how to treat it.C)S ome mental-health specialists wanted “Internet addiction” to be included in the fifth version of psychiatry’s bible, the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders”, known as DSM-V, which is currently being overhauled(全面修订).The American Medical Association endorsed(赞成)the idea in 2007, only to backtrack(放弃)days later. The American Journal of Psychiatry called Internet addiction a “common disorder” and supported its recognition. Last year the DSM-V drafting group made its decision: Internet addiction would not be included as a “behavioral addiction”—only gambling made the cut—but it said further study was necessary.D)S keptics say there is nothing uniquely addictive about the Internet. Back in 2000 Joseph Walther, a communications professor at Michigan State University, co-wrote an article in which he suggested, tongue in cheek, that the criteria used to call someone an Internet addict might also show that most professors were “addicted” to academia(学术活动). He argued that other factors, such as depression, are the real problem. He stands by that view today. “No scientific evidence has emerged to suggest that Internet use is a cause rather than a consequence of some other sort of issu e,” he says. “Focusing on and treating people for Internet addiction, rather than looking for underlying clinical issues, is unwise.”E)Others disagree. “That would be wrong,” says Kimberly Young, a researcher and therapist who has worked on Internet addiction since 1994. She insists that the Internet, with its powerfully immersive environments, creates new problems that people must learn to navigate(应对). Otherwise, the changing lifestyle will affect the development of the society.F)No one disputes that online habits can turn toxic. Take South Korea, where widespread broadband means that the average high-school student plays video games for 23 hours each week. In 2007 the government estimated that around 210,000 children needed treatment for Internet addiction. Last year newspapers around the globe carried the story of a South Korean couple who fed their infant daughter so little that she starved to death. Instead of caring for the child, the couple spent most nights at an Internet café, sinking hours into a role-playing game in which they raised, fed and cared for a virtual daughter. And several South Korean men have died from exhaustion after marathon, multi-day gaming sessions.G)T he South Korean government has since asked game developers to adopt a gaming curfew (宵禁) for children, to prevent them playing between midnight and 8 am. Ithas also opened more than 100 clinics for Internet addiction and sponsored an “Internet rescue camp” for serious cases.H)B ut compulsive behavior is not limited to gamers. E-mail or web-use behaviors can also show signs of addiction. Getting through a business lunch in which no one pulls out a phone to check their messages now counts as a minor miracle in many quarters. A deluge(泛滥) of self-help books, most recently “Alone Together” b y Sherry Turkle, a social scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, offer advice on how to unplug(去除障碍).I)Pornography is hardly new, either, but the Internet makes accessing it much easier than ever before. When something can be summoned in an instant via broadband, whether it is a game world, an e-mail inbox or pornographic material, it is harder to resist. New services lead to new complaints. When online auction sites first became popular, talk of “eBay addiction” soon followed. Dr Young says women complain to her now about addiction to Facebook—or even to “Farm Ville”, a game playable only within Facebook.J)Treatment centres have popped up around the world. In 2006 Amsterdam’s Smith & Jones facility billed itself as “the first and, currently, the only residential video-game treatment program in the world”. In America the Restart Internet Addiction Recovery Program claims to treat Internet addiction, gaming addiction, and even “texting addiction”. In China, meanwhile, military-style “boot camps” are the preferred way to treat Internet problems. After several deaths, however, scrutiny of the camps has intensified.K)Y et many people like feeling permanently connected. As Arikia Millikan, an American blogger, once put it, “If I could be jacked in at e very waking hour of the day, I would, and I think a lot of my peers would do the same.” Bob La Rose, an Internet specialist at Michigan State University, doesn’t believe her. In his research on college students, he found that most sense when they are “goin g overboard and restore self-control”. Less than 1% have a pathological(病态的) problem, he adds. For most people, Internet use “is just a habit—and one that brings us pleasure.”1.According to Joseph Walther, it is unwise to emphasize the treatment of Internetaddiction instead of seeking for potential clinical issues.2.As online games become popular, treatment centres have sprung up all over theworld.3.After playing online games continuously for days, several South Korean men wereexhausted to death.4.Smallwood sued NCsoft and claimed a huge compensation for fraud and itsnegligence of warning him of the danger of game addiction.5.In South Korea, a gaming curfew for children was adopted to prevent childrenplaying after midnight.6.Internet addiction still needs to be further studied though the DSM-V did notcategorize it as a “behavioral addiction”.7.An Internet specialist found that most college students could realize when they aregoing too far and restore self-control.8.According to mental-health specialists, for many people, video games, pornographyand messaging via e-mail and social networks can become problematic online behaviors.9.People regard it as a small miracle if nobody takes out a phone to read the messagesat a business lunch.10.Kimberly Young insists that people must learn to deal with new problems broughtabout by the Internet.Part III Listening ComprehensionSection ADirections:In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake things for children that children can only do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible.”Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: It can be seen and observed.Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest (探索) for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.57. The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that ________.A. it is one of the most difficult school coursesB. students spend endless hours in readingC. reading tasks are assigned with little guidanceD. too much time is spent in teaching about reading58. But it willfall we know not where. That precise information is beyond even the calculations of scientists and their computers. The best they can tell us is that the space station, weighing 77 tons and as high as a 12 story building, will break into hundreds of pieces that will be scattered across a track 100 miles wide and 4,000 miles long.We are again exposed to one of those unexpected adventures, or misadventures, of science that attracts our attention from the boring routines of daily existence and encourages us to think a lot about man’s future. What worries Richard Smith, the Skylab’s director, is the “big pieces” that will come through the atmosphere, Two lumps, weighing 2 tons each, and ten, weighing at least 1,000 pounds each, will come in at speeds of hundreds of miles an hour and if they crash on land they will dig holes up to 100 feet deep. What worries us, with our lack of scientific knowledge and our quick imagination, is both the big and little pieces, although project officials say there is a very small chance that anyone will be injured by them. That’s good to know, but it doesn’t remove the doubts of the millions who still remember the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. That accident took place in 1979 in spite of what the officials had assured us as to the safety of the nuclear reactor.62. Where the Skylab will fall ________.A. is kept secretB. has been made publicC. has been predicted by scientistsD. can’t be predicted even by computers63. The author refers to Three Mile Island ________.A. because he is doubtful about what the officials saidB. because he fears that a piece of the Skylab may strike a nuclear power plantC. because he is afraid of the use of nuclear powerD. because the nuclear reactor there and the Skylab were both built by the same company66. This passage is mainly about the author’s ________.A. interest in the failure of the SkylabB. willingness to give his adviceC. eagerness to see more new scientific discoveriesD. concern that science cannot answer all questionsSection C Blank FillingDirections:In this section, there are ten sentences with ten blanks. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child: This might happen at any stage.A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills________.A) should be avoidedB) is universal among parentsC) sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD) will make him lose interest in learning new things12. In the proces s of children’s learning new skills parents ________.A) should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB) should not expect too much of themC) should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD) should create as many learning opportunities as possible13. Of course as we all know, Edwin Armstrong’s FM technology eventually prevailed and was adopted by thousands of stations round the world. until至到……为止。

Though he is very old,yet he is quite strong.这时用yet可以,但是不能用but,要用but必须去掉though.3. B 听取他的建议,否则你会失败的。
