And in an interview last August, Ms. Yousafzai said that she rarely watched television and deleted the Candy Crush game from her iPad to prevent a growing addiction. As a child in Pakistan, she had access to only a handful of books, she said, but one was a biography of Dr. King, giving her an early sense of what one activist could accomplish.
In a brief speech in Birmingham on Friday, she called the prize“an encouragement for me to go forward and believe in myse lf. ”

People aren’t walking any more—if they can figure out a way to avoid
it.
I felt superior about this matter until the other day I took my car
to mail a small parcel. The journey is a matter of 281 steps. But I used
the car. And I wasn’t in any hurry, either. I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorosis.
It is an illness to which I had thought myself immune(免疫的), for I was brought up in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 25 miles as a good day’s walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours as a sign of strength and skill. It did not occur to us that walking was a hardship.
And the effect was lasting. When I was 45 years old I raced—and beat—a teenage football player the 168 steps up the Statue of Liberty.
Such enterprises today are regarded by many middle-aged persons as bad for the heart. But a well-known British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrahams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper exercise. A person who avoids exercise is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly. And walking is an ideal form of exercise—the most familiar and natural of all.
It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn the trees, flowers, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world. He cannot learn in a car.
The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don’t dare to approach Nature any more; to them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat. To them security is a steel river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green.
I say that the green of forests is the mind’s best light. And none but the man on foot can evaluate what is basic and everlasting.
29. What is the national sickness?
A. Driving cars too much.
B. Walking too much.
C. Traveling too much.
D. Climbing stairs too much.
30. What was life like when the author was young?
A. People usually went around on foot.
B. People often walked 25 miles a day.
C. People used to climb the Statue of Liberty.
D. People considered a ten-hour walk as a hardship.
31. The author mentions Henry Thoreau to prove that .
A. middle-aged people like getting back to nature
B. people need regular exercise to keep fit
C. going on foot prevents heart disease
D. walking in nature helps enrich one’s mind

Holiday visitors to Waikiki Beach, Hawaii, may do a double look at
the four-legged surfer riding into shore, but the regulars are always
calm. They know the eight-year-old pug is Bugsy, a local star whose owner,
David Yew, taught the dog to surf.
Yew, 39, got the idea while he and Bugsy were walking on the beach and came upon a statue of a surfer. Yew put the dog down on the surfboard to take a photo, and the scene looked so natural that Yew was inspired to take the next step. Soon enough, the two were together surfing.
“The first time we paddled out, ”Yew says, “Bugsy ran right to the front of the board. ”
The two ride a 3. 35 m, rubber-filled long board. “It gives Bugsy a better hold, ”Yew says. He loves the water and dog-paddles so well that Yew has trouble keeping up.
Bugsy wasn’t always so energetic. Two days after Yew, a doctor of emergency medicine, adopted the 12-week-old puppy from a shelter, Bugsy came down with a bad cough, which progressed to pneumonia(肺炎). Yew rushed the pug to the emergency department of an animal hospital, where he stayed until Yew could no longer afford to keep him there. Bugsy needed further treatment, so Yew built his own ICU(重症监护室)in his apartment. He covered an empty fish tank with plastic to use it
for further treatments and gave the sick puppy intravenous antibiotics(静脉注射抗生素). Bugsy pulled through.
Since then, the doctor and the dog have been inseparable. “Saving Bugsy’s life created unconditional trust between us, ”Yew says.
The pair surf together every week and have shared other activities, including skydiving. At Yew’s wedding to dentist Aimee Kim last year, Bugsy in a dress carried the rings down the aisle placed in a pillow on his back.
Bugsy and Yew have given up skydiving, at the bride’s insistence. But hang up the board? No way. Says Yew, “I want this dog to experience the same joy that I have in my life. ”

A. Frightened.
B. Amazed.

A. Holiday visitors to Waikiki Beach inspired him.
B. The statue he and Bugsy saw on the beach inspired him.
C. The eight-year-old pug showed his talent in surfing.
D. The photo in which Bugsy was on the surfboard inspired him.
34. Why didn’t Yew let Bugsy continue staying in the animal hospital?
A. Because Bugsy didn’t need to receive further treatment.
B. Because there was no ICU in the hospital.
C. Because as a doctor, Yew could do better.
D. Because Yew couldn’t afford Bugsy’s treatment any longer.
35. What most strengthened the relationship between Yew and Bugsy?
A. Taking the photo on the beach.
B. Surfing together every week.
C. Yew’s saving Bugsy’s life.
D. Skydiving together every week.

First Job Search Tips
Keep in mind that you may not get the first job you apply for, or the second. . .
A job search can take time, especially if you don’t have much experience. Here’s how to ensure you’re an excellent candidate(求职者) for the jobs you are applying for.
Be Persistent. Wait a few days, then follow-up your application with a phone call to the hiring manager reiterating your interest. If you have applied in person, stop in again and mention that you are really interested in the opportunity.
Don’t Stop. Don’t apply at one place and wait for the phone to ring. Complete as many job applications as you can, and consider a variety of positions. 36
37 Applicants who are only available(空闲的) for limited hours are less likely to get hired than those who are flexible(灵活的) as to when they can work. For example, one candidate for a summer job told the employer that he was only available on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Compare that to another appli cant who selected“any”on the Hours Available section of the job applicant and you can see why the second applicant got the job.
Use Your Connections.38 Does your mom shop regularly at the store where you’d like to work? If so, have her mention that you’re looking for a job. That’s
how I got my first job and how my brother got his first job at the drug store across the street.
Dress Appropriately. When applying for jobs, dress as though you had the job. If you’re applying for a retail position, for example, visit the store before you apply to see what the staff is wearing. 39 When in doubt, dress up, not down.
Don’t Give Up.Job searching isn’t easy, especially when you don’t have much experience or many skills. 40 Your first job will be a stepping stone to your next job—and to your future career.
A. Don’t stop to look for a job.
B. The more you apply, the better chance you have of finding a job.
C. Be Flexible.
D. It will give you an idea as to how you should dress.
E. You shouldn’t apply for different jobs at the same time.
F. If you have a connection, use it.
G. Keep trying and keep applying and you will find a job.
36. 【解析】B。

本段建议求职者不要等待, 要考虑更多的工作机缘, B项意思与之相符。

37. 【解析】C。

和上下几条建议彼此对应, C项可作为本段首句。

38. 【解析】F。

F项和Use Your Connections. 相衔接。

39. 【解析】D。

本条建议讲的是着装问题, D项符合。

40. 【解析】G。

求职不是一件容易的事情, 所以要不懈尽力。

Dear Paul,
How are you doing? I have been here for a month now. Everything here is new to me. There are 1,800 students and 32 classes with 200 teachers and staff in our school. The teachers in our school work hard. Chinese, math and English are our required courses. Besides these we have many selected subjects to choo se from, too. I’m in Class 9, Grade 1. Fifty students are in my class., thirty-five boys and fifteen girls. My English teacher is our head teacher. She is very kind to us but very strict and serious about her work. We all think that she is a great teacher. Please don’t worry about me. I’m old enough to take care of myself, and I’ll do my best in all of my subjects.
Yours,
Li Hua。
