Health fears for obese children
Around half a million children in Europe are suffering the healt h problems of middle-

The levels of obesity (肥

In Britain, one in five children is overweight or obese (肥胖的). In Spain the figure is 30% of children, and in it reaches 3 6%. According to the government, 30% of American children are overweight or obese.
In the new study presented at the start of this year’s Europ ean Congress on Obesity in Athens, experts reported that hig h blood pressure, raised cholesterol (胆固
醇), damaged blood sugar regulation (血糖调节能
力) and other dangerous problems — often called the metabol ic syndrome (新陈代谢综合症) —
were increasingly being found along with the rising levels of c hildhood obesity in Europe.
“The figures suggest that children in the EU could soon be t he same as kids in the . There the number of kids with the me tabolic syndrome doubled from 910,000 to two million in less t han 10 yearn,” said the analysis by the International Obesity T ask Force, a group of famous obesity scientists and policy ex perts.
The group estimated (估
计) that between 2,000 and 10,000 European children already had the type of diabetes (糖尿
病) usually found among middle-aged people.
A statement was made at the conference by Markos Kypria nou, EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection. He made plans for Europe-
wide rules to control the selling of unhealthy food to children a nd other plans for agriculture, education, and transport to deal with the obesity problem.
The European Union would publish new ideas on diet and exercise before the end of the year and have the document c hecked with the food industry, anti-
obesity activists, and others to make a final plan by the end of 2006, Mr. Kyprianou said.
The move follows the big steps taken last year by the Worl d Health Organization, which launched (发
起) a global programme on diet and physical activity after heal th ministers from around the world approved the plan.

You’re sitting in class and you are very hungry. Finally, the bel l rings and it’s time for lunch-woo-
hoo! After several hours in class, you should have a chance t o go to the dining room and sit down, relax, and enjoy the hap py time together with your friends over a lunchtime meal. But wait a minute-what exactly are you eating?
Compared with other meals, kids have more choices of w hat they eat for lunch at school. A kid can choose to eat green vegetables or throw them away. A kid can also choose to eat an apple instead of an ice cream sandwich.
When choosing what to eat for lunch, making a healthy ch oice is really important. Here’s why: Eating different healthy fo ods helps you grow the way you should, and can even keep y ou from getting sick.
What does a healthy lunch look like? We will give you som e right answers to that question.
Most kids have the choice of packing lunch or buying one
at school. The good news is that a kid can get a healthy lunch by doing either one because some meals and foods sold in th e school’s dining room are very healthy for you.
The typical school lunch is still higher in fat than it should b e, according to a study. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy your lunch. It just means you might want to give the menu a cl oser look. Read the menu the night before. Knowing what’s fo r lunch beforehand (事
先) will let you know whether you want to eat it!
A packed lunch isn’t always healthier than the one you buy at school. If you pack chocolate cakes and potato chips, tha t’s not a healthy meal! But a packed lunch, if done in the right w ay, does have a clear advantage. When you pack your lunch, be sure it includes your favorite healthy foods. It’s a meal just for you. If your favorite sandwich is peanut butter and banana s, just make it and pack it -
then you can eat it for lunch. Go and pack them!
If you want to pack your lunch, you’ll need some help from your parents. Talk to them about what you like to eat for lunch so that they can prepare those foods for you. This is nice of t hem. But you may want to watch how they do it and ask if you can start making your lunches yourself. It’s a way to show tha t you’re growing up.

A. Chocolate cakes.
B. Potato chips.
C. Peanut butter and bananas.
D. Ice cream.
10. A The reason why you should choose what to eat for lunc
h is that __________.

A. is always healthy
B. is not healthy at all
