Starting out—Task 3
Dear John,
I used to live a life just like yours. I can see myself in you when I finished my college and started my first job. I found a job as junior reporter for Chicago Daily so I moved from Houston to Chicago. I was working 18 hours a day in a place where I knew few people. My health finally broke down from too much work and poor diet. I stayed in hospital for two weeks. My parents came to Chicago and took care of me. After I was out of hospital, I quitted my job and moved back to Houston, where I found a job in a local newspaper. I visited my parents often and I had time to hang around with my friends whom I had known for years as well as those I newly made. I felt happy finally.

Unit 2 Communication And CultureText A

Unit 1 The Hidden Side of Happiness3 This and other promising findings about the life-changing effects of crises are the province of the new science of post-traumatic growth. This fledgling field has already proved the truth of what once passed as bromide: What doesn't kill you can actually make you stronger. Post-traumatic stress is far from the only possible outcome. In the wake of even the most terrifying experiences, only a small proportion of adults become chronically troubled. More commonly, people rebound-or even eventually thrive.

Unit2 Commercialization and Changes in Sportsmercialization has not had a dramatic effect on the format and goals of most sports. In spite of the influence of spectators, what has occurred historically is that sports have maintained their basic format. Innovations have been made within this framework, rather than completely dismantling the design of a game. For example, the commercialization of the Olympic Games has led to minor rule changes in certain events, but the basic structure of each Olympic sport has remained much the same as it was before the days of corporate endorsements and the sale of television rights.

The existence of commercial sports depends on revenues generated from a combination of gate receipts and the sale of broadcasting rights to radio and television. This means that they grow and prosper best under certain social and economic conditions. First, they grow best in market economies where material rewards are given high priority in the lives of people connected with sports, including athletes and those who own teams or sponsor and promote events. Second, because they require large concentrations of potential spectator, commercial sports tend to exit in societies with large, densely populated cities. Although it would be possible to maintain simple forms of commercial sports in rural societies, it would be hard to support financially full time professional athletes.Third, commercial sports rely on the availability of large amounts of capital to build and maintain stadiums in which events can be played and watched. Capital funds can be accumulated in either the public or private sector, but in either case, the willingness to invest in sport depends on anticipated payoffs in the form of publicity profits, or power. Private investment in sports is motivated primarily by expected financial profits; while public investment is motivated primarily by a belief by those in power that commercial sports will serve their own interests, “the public”, or a combination of both.。
