2015职称英语理工类A级试题及答案讲解

2015职称英语理工类A级试题及答案职称英语考试《理工类A级》阅读理解强化练习题(5)Early or Later Day CareThe British psychoanalyst John Bowlby maintains that separation from the parents during the sensitive “attachment” period from birth to three may scar a child's personality and predispose to emotional problems in later life. Some people have drawn the conclusion from Bowlby's work that children should not be subjected to day care before the age of three because of the parental separation it entails, and many people do believe this. But there are also arguments against such a strong conclusion.Firstly, anthropologists point out that the insulated love affair between children and parents found in modern societies does not usually exist in traditional societies. For example, in some tribal societies, such as the Ngoni, the father and mother of a child did not rear their infant alone —far from it. Secondly, common sense tells US that day care would not be so widespread today if parents, care-takers found children had problems with it. Statistical studies of this kind have not yet been carried out, and even if they were, the results would be certain to be complicated and controversial. Thirdly, in the last decade there have been a number of careful American studies of children in day care, and they have uniformly reported that day care had a neural or slightly positive effect on children's development. But tests that have had to be used to measure this development are not widely enough accepted to settle the issue. But Bowlby's analysis raises the possibility that early day care has delayed effects. The possibility that such care might lead to, say, more mental illness or crime 15 or 20 years later can only be explored by the use of statistics. Whatever the long-term effects, parents sometimes find the immediate effects difficult to deal with. Children under three are likely to protest at leaving their parents and show unhappiness. At the age of three or three and a half almost all children find the transition to nursery easy, and this is undoubtedly why more and more parents make use of child care at this time. The matter, then, is far from clear-cuff, though experience and available evidence indicate that early care is reasonable for infants.词汇:psychoanalyst n.精神分析学家一心理分析学家 insulate vt.隔绝rear vt.抚养 predispose 易导致 care taker n.照顾者,看管人 entail vt.蕴涵infant n.婴儿 anthropologist n.人类学家1.Which of the following statements would Bowlby support?A) Statistical studies should be carried out to assess the positive effect of day car for children at the age of three or older.B) Early day care can delay the occurrence of mental illness in children.C) The first three years of one's life is extremely important to the later development of personality.D) Children under three get used to the life at nursery schools more readily than children over three.2.Which of the following is derivable from Bowlby's work?A) Mothers should not send their children to day care centers before the age of three.B) Day care nurseries have positive effects on a child's development.C) A child sent to a day care center before the age of three may have emotional problems in later life.D) Baby care would not be so popular if it has noticeable negative effects on a child's s personality.3.It is suggested that modern societies differ from traditional societies in that ______ .A) the parents-child relationship is more exclusive in modern societiesB) a child more often grows up with his/her brothers or sisters in traditional societiesC) mother brings up children with the help of her husband in traditional societiesD) children in modern societies are more likely to develop mental illness in later years4.Which of the following statements is NOT an argument against Bowlby's theory?A) Many studies show that day care has a positive effect on children's development.B) The fact that there are so many nursery schools today shows that day care is safe.C) The separation of young children from their parents is common in some traditional societies.D) Parents find the immediate effects of early day care difficult to deal with.5. Which of the following best expresses the writer's attitude towards early day care?A) Children under three should stay with their parents.B) Early day care has positive effects on children's development.C) The issue is controversial and its settlement calls for the use of statistics.D) The effects of early day care on children are exaggerated and parents should ignore the issue.「答案解析」1.C 波比认为,孩子从出生到三岁这段时间是一个敏感的“依恋”期。

2015年职称英语考试《理工A》真题Lackof Oxygen Delayed the Rise of Animals on EarthScientistshave long speculated as to why animal species didn‟t flourish sooner, oncesufficient oxygen covered the Earth‟s surface. Animals began to prosper at theend of the Proterozoi c period, about 800 million years ago —but what about thebillion-year stretch before that, when most researchers think there also wasplenty of oxygen?Well,it seems the air wasn‟t so great then, after all.Ina study published Oct. 31 in Science, Yale researcher Noah Planavsky and hiscolleagues found that oxygen levels during the “boring billion” period wereonly 0.1% of what they are today. In other words, Earth‟s atmosphere couldn‟thave supported a diversity of creatures, no matter what genetic advance mentswere poised to occur.“There is no questionthat genetic and ecological innovation must ultimately be behind the rise ofanimals, but it is equally unavoidable that animals need a certain level ofoxygen,” said Planavsky, co-lead author of the research along with ChristopherRein hard of the Georgia Institute of Technology. “We‟re providing the firstevidence that oxygen levels were low enough during this period to potentiallyprevent the rise of animals.”Thescientists found their evidence by analyzing chromium (Cr) isotopes in ancientsediments from China, Australia, Canada, and the United States. Chromium isfound in the Earth‟s continental crust, and chromium oxidation is directlylinked to the presence of free oxygen in the atmosphere.Specifically, the team studied samples deposited in shallow, iron-rich ocean areas, near theshore. They compared their data with other samples taken from younger localesknown to have higher levels of oxygen.Oxygen‟srole in controlling the first appearance of animals has long vexed scientists.“We were missing the right approach until now,” Planavsky said. “Chromium gaveus the proxy.” Previous estimates put the oxygen level at 40% of today‟sconditions during pre-animal times, leaving open the possibility that oxygenwas already plentiful enough to support animal life.Inthe new study, the researchers acknowledged that oxygen levels were “highlydynamic” in the early atmosphere, with the potential for occasional spikes. However, they said, “It seems clear that there is a first-order difference inthe nature of Earth surfa ce Cr cycling” before and after the rise of animals.“If we are right, ourresults will really change how people view the origins of animals and othercomplex life, and their relationships to the co-evolving environment,” saidco-author Tim Lyons of the University of California-Riverside. “This could be agame changer.”Fundingsources for the research included the NASA Exobiology Program and the NationalScience Foundation‟s Earth-Life Transitions program, awarded to Planavsky,Reinhard, and Lyons.Theother members of the research team included Xiangli Wang, a postdoctoral fellowat Yale; ThomasJohnson, of the University of Illinois; Danielle Thomson, ofCarleton University; Peter McGoldrick, of the University of Tasmania; andWoodward Fischer, of the California Institute of Technology.16.The study discovered the rise of animals occurred earlier than the Proterozoicperiod.A.RightB. Gorillas have a word for itKoko is the first gorilla to have been taught sign language (a way of communicating by using hands and fingers rather than speech). With a vocabulary of more than1000 words, she is the first to prove we share a world with other intelligent beings who feel emotions, look forward to celebrations and also have a sense of humour. The 30-year study of Koko has redefined science's concept of gorilla intelligence. 46. But what had not been recognised by the scientific community was that gorillas have the ability to learn a language and have complex emotions.Koko lives in the Santa Cruz mountains in North America, in a wooded spot overlooking a valley. 47. She has her own home, with curtains, and a nest of blankets, which is her bed, in one corner. She has a barrel on which she likes to sit when 'talking' to humans - gorillas feel more secure when they can look down onothers - while her toys are spread everywhere. In addition she has an outside enclosure where she spends her days when it is not raining. It is her conversations with her teacher, Dr Penny Patterson, that are inspiring. Penny explains: ‘The reality of my discovery is that our abilities as humans, our skills, sensibilities and emotions are very similar to the great apes. 48. .When she began teaching Koko sign language, placing the little fingers of the one-year-old gorilla into the correct positions for 'drink', 'eat', 'more', and rewarding her with food, Dr Patterson had no idea how quickly Koko would learn. “At first, it seemed Koko was using sign language as a tool to get something,” says Patterson. 'It became the kind of reward system that you could expect of a cat or a dog. But early in her training, she began to combine signs that made me think she was capable of more.’ 49. For examp le, she didn't know the word for 'ring', so she combined the signs for ‘finger’ and 'bracelet' to express it.Dr Patterson continues: ‘Koko loves babies and young people. 第一篇Captain Cook Arrow Legend 库克船长弓箭的传说It was a great legend while it lasted, but DNA testing has (1) finally ended a two-century-old story of the Hawaiian arrow carved from the bone of British explorer Captain James Cook(2) who died in the Sandwich Islands’in 1779.“There is (3) no Cook in the Australian Museum,’’museum collection manager Jude Philip said not long ago in announcing the DNA evidence that the arrow was not made of Cook’S bone. But that will not stop the museum from continuing to display the arrow in its(4) exhibition,“Uncovered:Treasures of the Australian Museum,” which(5) does include a feather cape presented to Cook by Hawaiian King Kalani’opu’u in 1778.Cook was one of Britain’s great explorers and is credited with(6) discovering the“Great South Land,"(7) now Australia, in 1 770.He was clubbed to death in the Sandwich Islands, now Hawaii。

The 1egend of Cook’s arrow began in 1824 (8) when Hawaiian King Kamehameha on his deathbed gave the arrow to William Adams,a London surgeon and relative of Cook’s wife, saying it was made of Cook’s bone after the fatal(9) fight with islanders. In the 1890s the arrow was given to the Australian Museum and the legend continued (10) until it came face=to-face with science.DNA testing by laboratories in Australia and New Zealand revealed the arrow was not made of Cook’s bone but was more (11) likely made of animal bone。

said Philp. However, Cook’s fans (12) refuse to give up hope that one Cook legend will prove true and that part of his remains will still be uncovered.as they say there is evidence not a11 of Cook’s body was (13) buried at sea in 1 779.“On this occasion technology has won",”said Cliff Thornton, president of the Captain Cook Society, in a (14) statement from Britain.“But I am (15) sure that one of these day s…one of the Cook legends will prove to be true and it will happen one day.’’第二篇Avalanche and Its Safety雪崩和安全问题An avalanche is a sudden and rapid flow of snow, often mixed with air and water, down a mountainside. Avalanches are (1) among the biggest dangers in the mountains for both life and property. All avalanches are caused by an over-burden of material, typically snowpack, that is too massive and unstable for the slope (2) that supports it. Determining the critical load, the amount of over-burden which is (3)likely to cause an avalanche, (4) is a complex task involving the evaluation of a number of factors.Terrain slopes flatter than 25 degrees or steeper than 60 degrees typically have a low (5)risk of avalanche. Snow does not (6)gather significantly on steep slopes; also, snow does not (7)flow easily on flat slopes. Human-triggered avalanches have the greatest incidence when the snow's angle of rest is (8)between 35 and 45 degrees; the critical angle, the angle at which the human incidence of avalanches is greatest, is 38 degrees. The rule of thumb is: A slope that is (9)flat enough to hold snow but steep enough to ski has the potential to generate an avalanche, regardless of theangle. Additionally, avalanche risk increases with (10)use ; that is, the more a slope is disturbed by skiers, the more likely it is that an avalanche will occur.Due to the complexity of the subject, winter travelling in the backcountry is never 100% safe. Good avalanche safety is a continuous (11)process , including route selection and examination of the snowpack, weather (12)conditions, and human factors. Several well-known good habits can also(13) reduce the risk. If local authorities issue avalanche risk reports, they should be considered and all warnings should be paid (14)attention to. Never follow in the tracks of others without your own evaluations; snow conditions are almost certain to have changed since they were made. Observe the terrain and note obvious avalanche paths where plants are (15)missing or damaged. Avoid traveling below others who might trigger an avalanche.第三篇Giant Structures巨型建筑It is an impossible task to select the most amazing wonders of the modern world since every year more (1)wonderful constructions appear. Here are three giant structures which are worthy of our (2) admiration although they may have been surpassed by some more recent wonders. The Petronas Twin Towers1The Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world when they were completed in 1999. With a (3) height of 452 metres, the tall twin towers, like two thin pencils, dominate the city of Kuala Lumpur2. At the 41st floor, the towers are linked by a bridge, symbolizing a gateway to the city. The American (4) architect Cesar Pelli designed the skyscrapers.Constructed of high-strength concrete, the building provides around l, 800 square metres of office space (5) on every floor. And it has a shopping centre and a concert hall at the base. Other (6) features of this impressive building include double-decker lifts, and glass and steel sunshades. The Millau Bridge3The Millau Bridge was opened in 2004 in the Tarn Valley, in southern France.(7) At the time it was built, it was the world's highest bridge, (8) reaching over 340m at the highest point. The bridge is described as one of the most amazingly beautiful bridges in the world. It was built to (9) relieve Millau's congestion problems. The congestion was then caused by traffic passing from Paris to Barcelona in Spain. The bridge was built to withstand the (10) most extreme seismic and climatic conditions. Besides, it is guaranteed for 120 years! The Itaipu Dam4The Itaipu hydroelectric power plant is one of the largest constructions of its kind in the world. It consists of a series of dams across the River Parana5, (11) which forms a natural border betweenBrazil6 and Paraguay. Started in 1975 andtaking 16 years to complete, the construction was carried out as a joint project between the two (12) countries . The dam is well-known for both its electricity output and its size. In 1995 it produced 78% 0f Paraguay's and 25% 0f Brazil's (13) energy needs. In its construction, the (14) amount of iron and steel used was equivalent to over 300 Eiffel Towers8. It is a (15) truly amazing wonder of engineering.第五篇Singing Alarms Could Save the Blind警报器救盲人If you cannot see, you may not be able to find your way out of a burning building ---- and that could be fatal. A company in Leeds could change all that (1)with directional sound alarms capable if guiding you to the exit.Sound Alert, a company (2)run by the University of Leeds, is installing the alarms in a residential home for (3)blind people in Sommerset and a resource centre for the blind in Cumbria.(4)The alarms produce a wide range of frequencies that enable the brain to determine where the (5)sound is coming from.Deborah Withington of Sound Alert says that the alarms use most of the frequencies that can be (6)heard by humans. “It’s a burst of white noise (7)that people say sounds like static on the radio,”she says. “Its life-saving potential is great.”She conducted an experiment in which people were filmed by thermal—imaging cameras trying to find their way out of a large (8)smoke-filled room. It (9)took them nearly four minutes to find the door (10)without a sound alarm, but only 15 seconds with one.Withington studies how the brain (11)processes sounds at the university. She says that the (12)source of a wide band of frequencies can be pinpointed more easily than the source of a narrow band. Alarms (13)based on the same concept have already been installed on emergency vehicles. The alarms will also include rising or falling frequencies to indicate whether people should go up (14)or down stairs. They were (15)developed with the aid of a large grant from British Nuclear Fuels.。
