For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving .Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to US through satellites. Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location. We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator. Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates. A satellite must orbit the Earth with its antennae facing the earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit,So there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position .This usually happens about every five or six days.Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired. But there aren't any researches to support this opinion. And in fact, it is not right at all. There is one thing that can finally decide students' success or failure. That is how they learn. A few students are clever and lucky. They find good ways for themselves to study every subject well. But others aren't so lucky like them. They don't find correct ways of their own and fail in the end. To teachers, what is the best way to teach languages? Dr. Asher found a way called “Total Physical Response”. This was helpful to students. Studies in San Jose State University showed that if students moved their bodies when learning English, they were able to learn a lot more new words and grammar in a very short time. But if they sat still and didn't move, they could learn less. And after a year, the students who moved their bodies when learning remembered 80% or more things they learned. But others forgot more than 80%.Now you may know how to learn English. Keep moving when you learn. So when you listen to a story or an article, do action as soon as you hear it. And you can imagine you are the person in the story or the article. By doing this, you can learn more English and you can remember it longer. The most useful is that you can use it more easily. Stop your old method. Try this one at once!1. What is the aim of Dr. Asher's Total Physical Response?A. For students to remember words.B. For teachers to teach languages.C. For parents to help their children.D. For schools to develop fast.2. When you learn new words, ________ can help learn them well.A. moving your bodiesB. listening to storiesC. reading articlesD. talking to others3. I am the writer of the story or article.B. I am the seller of the story or article.C. I am a character of the story or article.D. I am the teller of the story or article.5. What does the writer want to tell us?A. Ways to succeed in the future.B. Ways to do much more exercise.C. Ways to make new sentences.D. Ways to help people learn well.Passage HWhen migrants(移民)arrive in the US, they face a world that can be confusing in many ways. They need to learn to live in a different environment. Some laws and rules are written down. They can learn about them before they arrive. But there are lots of "unwritten rules," too. Unwritten rules are behaviors that no one talks about, but that most people understand. Here is a list of five important issues any new arrival to the U.S. should know about.Be "on time." In some cultures, time is not a big issue. If you tell your friend to meet you at 2 p.m. and you arrive at 2:45 p.m., there is no problem. In the U.S., people feel that being on time is a sign of respect. If you are late by more than a few minutes, people will think you do not care. They will feel you are wasting their time. They will take your lateness as an insult.Be sure you always "tip." In many countries, after you eat at a restaurant, you only pay the amount shown on the bill. But, in the U.S., people who work in restaurants and bars often earn a low hourly wage. So, they try to provide excellent service, hoping the customer will give them a "tip," meaning a little extra. People in the U.S. tip between 15 percent and 20 percent of the bill. You also give tips to taxi drivers, hotel employees and the people who cut your hair.Be careful what you say. Any place you go there will be some things that are proper to talk about and some things that are not. Supposing that people have the same beliefs as you is a bad idea. In the past decade, people in the U.S. have become more open about discussing strong political and religious views. But it is still best to listen to people share their opinions first and then decide about sharing your own. Also, there are several topics you should avoid asking questions about: how much money a person makes and if they are married. But if a person offers this information, then there is no problem.Be polite for the situation. People in the U.S. define being polite in very special ways. For example, waiting in line involves a strong set of rules in this country. You must wait until the people in front of you have done what they are waiting to do. When going through a door, the person behind you expects you to hold the door for them. Also, it is common for people you do not know to say hello to you when passing you. But this does not always mean they are inviting you to stop and talk for a long time. Many times the person is just being friendly. If you don't say hello back to them they may think you are being unfriendly.1. The passage talks about several issues except ______.A. timeB. personal spaceC. giving tipD. education2. What's the meaning of the word confusing in paragraph 1?A. 轻而易举的B. 引人发笑的C. 令人疑惑的D. 令人尴尬的3. If you are late in the U. S., the one you meet________.A. will insult youB. will think you don't respect him/herC. will think it's okayD. will ask you for some tip4. How many examples are shown on "being polite"?A. 1.B. 2.C. 3.D. 4.5. Which of the following is TRUE in the US?A. It's not polite to ask a person if he/she is married.B. You'd better think that people have the same beliefs as you.C. It's not allowed to discuss about religious views.D. People usually tip 80 dollars if their bill is 80 dollars.Passage I (小说类)People have told stories about Robin Hood for over 700years. Nobody knows if he was a real person or an inventedcharacter. It is often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth” due to its crucial role in regulating the planet’s climate. The Amazon Rainforest, located in South America, is the largest and most well-known rainforest. The rainforest ecosystem is characterized by its high levels of biodiversity.Trees, which can grow up to 100 meters tall, dominate the landscape, forming a dense canopy that blocks out most of the sunlight. This canopy, along with the thick layers of undergrowth, creates a unique habitat for countless species of plants and animals. Many of these species are not found anywhere else on the planet. One of the most remarkable aspects of the rainforest is its role in the water cycle. The lush vegetation absorbs and stores enormous amounts of water, which then evaporates back into the atmosphere. This process, known as transpiration, helps to regulate t he Earth’s climate and distribute water around the globe. However, the rainforest is under threat from human activities. Deforestation, caused by logging, agriculture, and urbanization, is the most significant threat. This not only destroys the habitat of countless species but also contributes to global warming by releasing stored carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.Despite these challenges, there are efforts to preserve the rainforest. Conservationists work to protect areas of the rainforest, establish wildlife reserves, and promote sustainable practices that minimize the impact on the ecosystem.Questions:1.What is the primary reason the rainforest is called the “lungs of the Earth”?A. It just feels great to help.Try these small practices at home and see how they make you feel:*Help your little brother or sister with a homework problem.*Help your dad prepare dinner.*Help your mom carry living goods.*Offer to do a chore that’s not usually yours “just because.”There’s more to it than just feeling good: Kindness is contagious. It can create more kindness. So you might start to notice your family (or friends) reaching out to help more.Just don’t fall into the trap(陷阱) of expectation(期待). If we help out only because we expect the other person to do something in return, we will probably end up feeling disappointed and angry instead of happy and fulfilled. Garrison had been treasuring his last piece. All he had left now was a sheet of the beautiful brown paper Pa had brought back from his last sailing trip."You've been quiet," Pa said, "Could I see your picture?"Garrison handed over his sketch. Pa studied it, then looked at his son. "You're ten now, eh?" Garrison nodded, hoping Pa wouldn't say that he was too old to be fooling around with pencils and paper."When I was ten, I wanted to work on my father's ship," Pa said, "When Thomas was ten, he asked me to let him plant the corn."Garrison's throat (嗓子)tightened. "I know I'm not like either of you." Pa looked at the drawing again."No, you are like both of us. You work hard, like Thomas. And you're like me, too. I have wandering feet, but you have a wandering mind. We need to see things differently.Garrison frowned. "I'd rather love the land, like Thomas, or the sea…"Pa patted his hand. "Thomas cares about our family very much-that's why he's worked so hard to bring us food. And my love for the sea makes good money. But there's more in life than food and money. There's happiness, for one. Does it make you happy to draw?"Garrison nodded."And it makes me happy to look at your drawings. Not many folks can catch happiness on a piece of paper. Some might say drawing's a waste of time, but they don't understand how things are. Why, asking you to stop drawing like asking Thomas to stop farming, or me to stop going to sea. It would be like asking us to stop breathing, wouldn't it?"Garrison considered this, then replied, "No, sir. Not quite like breathing. If I couldn't draw any more, it would be… like someone took away my voice." He hung his head. In his mind he could hear Thomas laughing, "It's not like you ever speak up, anyway."But Pa patted his shoulder and said, "That would be a pure shame. Your voice is important, Garrison, whether it's out loud or on paper. And speaking of paper…" Pa smiled. "Take a look in my bag."Garrison reached into the bag and found a sketchbook. For a moment he was speechless happiness seemed to fill his body and stick in his throat. Then he managed to find his voice. "Oh, Pa-thank you."(1)Why did Garrison's throat tighten?A. Because he felt thirsty.B. Because he felt very scared.C. Because he knew he was not like Pa or Thomas.D. Some people think we shouldn’t. Fairy tales give kids hope and teach life lessons. But others think that children need the ability to distinguish (区分) real from fake, and this role is best played by their parents. What’s your opinion?YESHu Enqi, 16There is no doubt that the world of fairy tales is beautiful, but the real world is cruel (残酷的). If children are always deep in fairy tales, they might not adjust (调节) themselves to society. That’s why there are so many “giant babies” in society. It is parents’ duty to tell children that beauty and darkness are coexistent (共存的). They need to be stronger to adapt to (适应) society.Li Ziyi, 16It’s important to tell kids the wisdom in fairy tales, not whether or not they’re fake. If I’m a parent, I will tell my kids: “Dear, the Queen’s poisoned apple is fake, but in our daily lives, fake apples may be many other seductions (诱惑) that you need to be careful of.” Fairy tales can never solve all problems. After all, dangers are always present in both fairy tales and reality (现实).NOYuan Siyi, 16Not every fairy tale is fake —they’re from our lives. The essen ce (本质) of fairy tales is to teach children the most basic truths based on the real world. The content of fairy tales is not meaningless. Parents could look on them as partners to children when they grow up. Children will understand the truth step by step.Hu Pei, 16As a kid bathed in fairy tales, I don’t want to be told that they are fake. Fairy tales get kids to read, help shape their world outlook, encourage their imaginations and give them entertainment. Even if parents tell the kids the cruel reality, they may miss the point. Instead, they may be filled with fear of the future and the world, which is not our purpose.4. According to the passage, “the giant babies” are ___________.A. those babies who can’t grow upB. those babies who are big in shapeC. those adults who can adapt to society wellD. those adults who can’t distinguish real from fake5. According to Li Ziyi, ___________.A. we shouldn’t tell children fairy tales are fakeB. some fairy tales have wisdom while other s don’tC. there are many dangers in different shapes in realityD. “poisoned apples” needn’t be afraid of because they are fake6. From the passage, we can know _________.A. in fairy tales everything is beautiful and goodB. fairy tales can give kids hope and teach life lessonsC. fairy tales have nothing to do with the real worldD. fairy tales mainly need to tell kids cruelty of realityCBertie was sad for weeks, months after the lion died. There was nothing I could do to cheer him or even console (安慰) him. He would sit for hours in his room, or go off on long walks all on his own. He seemed so shut away inside himself. Try as I did, I could not reach him.①Then one day I was in the kitchen here, when I saw him hurrying down the hill, waving his stick and shouting to me. “I’ve got it,” he cried, as he came in, “I’ve got it at last.” He showed me the end of his stick. It was white. “See that, Millie?” “Chalk! It’s chalk underground, isn’t it?”“So?” I said.“You know the famous W hite Horse on the hillside at Uffington, the one they carved (雕刻) out of the chalk a thousand years ago? That horse never died, did it? It’s still alive, isn’t it? Well, that’s what we’re going to do, so he will never be forgotten. We’ll carve The White Prince out on the hillside—he’ll be there forever, and he’ll be white forever too. ”“It’ll take a bit of time, won’t it?” I said.“We’ve got plenty, haven’t we?” he replied, with the same smile he had smiled at me when he was a ten-year-old boy asking me if he could come back and mend my kite for me.②Every spare hour we had, we were up there scraping (刨土) away with spades (铲子), and we had buckets (桶) to carry away the earth. It was hard, back-breaking work, but it was a labour (劳动) of love. We did it, Bertie and I, we did it together—paws, claws, tail, mane, until he was complete and perfect in every detail.③It was just after we’d finished that the butterflies first came. We noticed that when the sun comes out after the rain in the summer, the butterflies—Adonis Blues, they are, I looked them up – come out to drink on the chalk face. Then The White Prince becomes a butterfly lion, and breathes again like a living creature (动物).④So now you know how Bertie’s white lion became The White Prince and how The White Prince became our butterfly lion.—Adapted from The Butterfly Lion 7. An important reason is that they don’t have enough sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep.Homework is a daily job for most students, one that can take three to four hours per night. A teenager who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all make teens have less time for both homework and sleep. Sometimes teens don’t have enough sleep because of after-school jobs that are taken on to make extra money for college, family costs, or just for clothes.Physical problems are another reason that make students fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia, which may keep a student up at night, making students tired during class hours, is a serious problem that may requiremedical care.Falling asleep in class can cause quite serious results. First of all, sleeping in class is not welcomed in school. What’s more, it is highly possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most harmful result of sleeping in class is missing out on important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up failing classes.Since teens are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably remain an all-too-common problem. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance their personal and social lives_________ (1) Times have changed, but falling asleep in class is still quite common.Causes◆To ____________ (2) doing their homework, students may have to work three to four hoursevery night.◆To balance homework with activities, students may stay up late.◆To spare time for after-school jobs, students may not have enough time to sleep.◆Insomnia may ____________ (3) students falling asleep at night. Results◆Students sleeping in class may not be loved by their teachers.◆Students who sleep in class run the ___________ (4) of being laughed at.◆Students who sleep too much in class may miss out on important knowledge and ____________(5) in their study. Conclusion The problem will not be solved until teenagers can manage their lives and deal with their school and work.树立自我保护意识,健康快乐地成长是每个青少年的必修课。
