Unit 1Main Reading ----

Unit 1Part 1: An Introduction to Names1. Hi, everyone! Today, let's talk about names. Names are an important part of our identity, and they have different meanings and significance in different cultures. In this lesson, we'll explore various aspects of names and how they can shape our lives.2. To start off, let's discuss the importance of names in different cultures. In many Western cultures, a person's first name is given at birth and often represents their gender, cultural background, or family tradition. Middle names are sometimes included to honor ancestors or to distinguish individuals from others with similar names.3. In some Eastern cultures, such as China, names hold an even greater significance. Chinese names usually consist of a surname, which is passed down through generations, and a given name, which is chosen by parents. The given name often reflects the parents' hopes and wishes for their child's future.4. Another interesting aspect of names is their popularity. Certain names may become trendy or popular in a particular era, while others remain timeless and classic. Pop culture, celebrities, and even fictional characters can influence name choices. For example, after the release of a popular movie or TV show, names of characters in the production may become popular baby names.5. Names can also be influenced by cultural shifts and changes. In recent years, there has been a rise in the use of gender-neutral names, reflecting society's increasing awareness and acceptance of individuals who identify as non-binary or transgender.Part 2: Personal Experiences with Names1. Now, let's hear about some personal experiences with names. I'll start with my own story. My parents named me Emily, which means "industrious" or "hard-working." They hoped that this name would inspire me to pursue my goals and work hard towards success.2. How about you? Can you share your name and its meaning, if you know it? Have you ever had any interesting experiences or stories related to your name? Let's take turns and share our experiences.3. (Student A) Hi, my name is Tian. In Chinese, it means "sky" or "heaven." My parents chose this name because they wanted me to have a lofty and optimistic outlook on life.4. (Student B) Hello, I'm María. In Spanish, it means "bitter" or "sorrowful." My parents named me after my great-grandmother, who had a difficult life but always remained strong and resilient.5. (Student C) Hi, I'm Ahmed. My name is of Arabic origin and means "praise" or "thankfulness." My parents wanted me to remember the importance of gratitude and appreciation in life.6. (Student D) Hey, I'm Kim. My name is a unisex name, which can be used for both males and females. I like the versatility of my name, and it reflects my identity as a non-binary individual.Part 3: Cultural Perspectives on Naming1. Finally, let's discuss cultural perspectives on naming. Different cultures have varying customs and traditions when it comes to naming their children. In some cultures, names are chosen based on religious or spiritual beliefs, while in others, names may be passed down through generations as a way to honor ancestors.2. In addition, certain cultures may have naming ceremonies or rituals to formally introduce a child's name to the community. These ceremonies are often seen as important cultural events and can involve various customs, such as prayers, blessings, or feasts.3. It's fascinating to explore the diverse meanings behind names and how they can shape our identities. Names have the power to connect us to our heritage, express our individuality, and forge connections with others. Let's celebrate the richness and beauty of names in all their forms. That concludes our discussion on names for today. In our next lesson, we'll delve further into the topic of personal identities. See you then!。

When they cannot take care of themselves, they are often sent to special nursing homes for the aged. They don’t see their children on a regular basis. It provides about one-quarter of the totalenergy the world uses, and 40 percent of the electricity generated worldwide is powered by coal. The steel industry also is greatly dependent upon this fossil fuel. Like other depletingsources of global energy, coal reserves are also on a steep decline. Moreover, coal is a greenhouse gas nightmare. Natural gas is comprised mostly of methane, although it also contains ethane, propane and butane. It is a convenient and efficient energy source. The major consumers of natural gas are the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. It is also used to generate electricity. Unlike other fossil fuels, natural gas is cleaner and causes less pollution. Like other fossil fuels, this resource is depleting rapidly.Task 2 Understanding Lectures through ClassificationListening 11. Physiological needs are the most basic and instinctive ones, which must be satisfied first. Safety needs refer to the needs for safety and security, also important for survival. Social needs include the needs for belonging, love and affection, the deprivation of which leads to unhappiness. Esteem needs reflect on personal worth, social recognition and accomplishment; if unmet, it may lead to inferiority complex. What’s more, there is a health factor that affects both of them. Canned food loses some of theoriginal fresh food nutrients when stored, and also has to be tinned with many preservatives and chemical factors that prolong the shelf life and apparent freshness of the food but could become toxic if consumed too often. Fresh food, on the other hand, often comes straight froma farm and has all the nutrients Mother Nature intended for it. As we can see, fresh foodoffers many benefits that canned food lacks. Therefore, an informed diner should always choose to eat fresh. After all, we could all use to improve our health.Task 2 Understanding Lectures Through Comparison and ContrastListening 12. 1) T. So what we are doing right now with computers with the energy consumed by 1,200houses, the brain is doing with the energy consumed by your laptop.5) F. How does that compare with the way computers work? In the computer, you have all thedata going through the central processing unit, and any piece of data basically has to go through that bottleneck, whereas in the brain, what you have is these neurons.6) T.
