Reading ComprehensionPassage 1My cousin is getting married later this year. Although he has been married before and so has his fiancée, they are planning to have a traditional wedding. The weekend before the wedding, my cousin is having a “stag” night. Traditionally this was held on the night before the marriage, but these days it is usually held a little earlier. It is a night when the groom goes out withal his men friends and celebrates his last night of “freedom”. Usually this involves drinking a lot of beer and playing silly games. Often the groom’s friends will play some kind of trick on the groom, like painting his face when he is drunk. My cousin’s fiancée is also planning a “hen”night. This is like a stag night, except it is for the bride and her female friends.Nowadays many people have their stag or hen nights in a hotel. It is necessary for them to prepare for shouldering the responsibilities that will fall upon them in course of time. Wisdom and foresight urge all students to perform their duties well. That is why every student has to make the best use of his or her school days.As future masters of the society, students must get prepared for a strenuous life. In other words, it is their lot of face life’s hardships.. One who is bodily weak cannot hope to have great success. It is very important, therefore, for students to develop fully their physical prowess by taking regular exercise. To render themselves really useful, students are expected to specialize along some line of study. The 21st century has no place for those who have no special knowledge or training. Moreover, students must cultivate the habit of self-research. This means that they should not rely upon their teachers or textbooks. The world is full of truths. Classroom work alone will not make one achieve much towards the goal of perfection. The increase in the consumption of rice and pasta may be partly responsible for the decline in that of potatoes. The consumption of meat –with the exception of that of poultry, which is now at a record, lever-has also fallen. Skimmed milk now constitutes more than half of the total household consumption of liquid milk. There has been a decline in the total consumption of cooking and spreading fats, with large falls in butter usage. Instead, the consumption of vegetable and salad oils and reduced fat spreads increases rapidly. A switch in fish consumption away from fresh white fish towards canned fish and shellfish has been evident. There has been a small increase in the intake of fibre.Britain has a wide range of restaurants, offering cuisine from almost every country. What does the word “cuisine” mean?A. Style of cookingB. FoodC. RestaurantD. ConsumptionPassage 4What must you do when you receive a present for your birthday? You have to sit down and write a thank-you note. The words “Thank you” are very important. WE have to use them on so many occasions. We say them when someone gives us a drink, helps us to pick up things, hands us a letter, lends us a book or gives us a lift.Another important word is “ please”. Many people forget to use it. It is rude to ask someone to do something without saying “please”. We have to use it when we ask for something, too. It may be a book or a pencil, more rice or more sauce, help or advice. It may be in the classroom, at home, at the bus-stop or over the counter. We have to use “please” to make request pleasant. We have to learn to say “sorry” too. When we have hurt someone’s feelings, we will have to go up and say we are sorry. When we have told a lie and feel sorry, we will have to use the same word. When we have forgotten something or broken a promise, we will have to explain with that word, too. “Sorry” is healing word. We can make people forget wrongs by using it sincerely. These three words are simple but important. Man had to use them long ago. We have to use them now. Our children will have to use them again. At one time, people would have laughed if you suggested the idea but not now. Britain, which used to be famous for its boring food, is now the place to be if you want to try a variety of dishes form around the world, and London is the best place to experience this change. In the past a Frenchman would have laughed at the idea, an Italian would have been amazed, but a recent survey has shown that there is a greater variety of food available in the UK than anywhere else in the world. Two factors have been identified as the reason for this change. The first is the fact that Britain is now a multi-cultural society with people from all over the world living there. At first this was limited to families from India, Italy and China opening restaurants, but now you can find Thai, Mexican, African and Eastern European restaurants in most big cities. The other big change has been that more people are traveling abroad for their holidays and enjoying different types of food while there. When they return, they look for places selling the same type of food in the UK. This has influenced other restaurants and led to “fusion” cookery where the traditional foods of many countries are combined to create something new. Even the traditional British pub has been affected by this change. Now, next to fish and chips or roast beef on the menu, you will find pasta from Italy or a curry form India. Supermarkets are also responding to these changes and now sell a range of ingredients that would have amazed the average shopper 20 years ago.1. The author argues that British food __________________.ed to be bad but is now goodB.has always been gooded to be good but is now bad2. One good thing about British good is ________________.A.expert chefsB.the freshness of the imported foodC.the variety available3. One reason for this change is that ___________________.A.people from all over the world have brought their traditional foods to BritainB.Britain imports food from all over the worldC.Sup ermarkets want to change people’s eating habits4. Returning holidaymakers _____________________.A.look forward to eating traditional British food againB.want to continue eating the food they tried on holidayC.bring back food from other countries with them5. These changes can be seen not only in restaurants but also in ___________.A. pubsB. pubs and supermarketsC. supermarketsPassage 2The principal NASA scientist for the new MAP spacecraft, Charles Bennett, says the heat patterns represent slight differences in the density of the young universe, where denser regions evolved into the present web of structures. “ These patterns result from tiny concentrations in the very early universe that grew to become the stars and the galaxies that we see today,”he says. “The tiny patterns in the light hold the keys for understanding the history, the content, the shape, and the ultimate fate of our universe.”One of those keys is the amount of matter and its density. More matter with a higher density means more gravitational pull, suggesting a slowing of the universe’s expansion, and perhaps even its collapse. Princeton University scientist David Spergel says MAP will give us a much more accurate matter count than we have now. “Right now, we want to measure something like the matter-density of the universe,” he says. “Today, we can estimate that to a factor of two. That’s pretty good. What we want to do is to be able to measure it to about the three-percent level, which is what MAP will be capable of doing. To do its job, the $145 million MAP spacecraft will settle into an orbit 1.5 million kilometers from the Earth. This is where the Earth’s gravitational pull is equal to the Sun’s, and well past the range of the Earth’s own obscuring microwave radiation. While the older COBE satellite measured just a small part of the sky, Charles Bennett says MAP will scan the entire sky at 1,000 times better resolution. “MAP will be measuring millionths of a degree temperature accuracies, and that’s hard to do. That’s like measuring the difference between two cups of sand to the accuracy of a single grain of sand.”NASA says the first results from the MAP mission will be ready in about 18 months after launch.6. What is the most important in the understanding of the universe?A.The tiny patterns in the light.B.The history of our universe.C.The content and the shape of our universe.D.The ultimate fate of our universe.7. What grew to become the stars and the galaxies?A.Microwave radiation.B.Tiny concentrations.C.Small stars.D. A single grain of sand.8. Which of the following statements is true?A.More matter with a higher density means more gravitational pull.B.Less matter suggests a slowing of the universe’s expansion.C.Matter and density determine the ultimate fate of our universe.D.Matter and density are equal to gravitational pull.9. Which of the following statement is true about the orbit into which the MAP spacecraft will。

Prices are rising continuously. This condition is termed one of inflation; the money supply is becoming inflated so that each unit of it becomes less valuable. People have grown accustomed in recent years to higher and higher rate of inflation. What could be bought ten years ago for one dollar now costs well over two dollars? Present indications are that this rate of inflation is tending to rise rather than to fall. If in the real world our money incomes go up at the same rate as prices.0ne might think that inflation does not matter. But it does. When money is losing value it lacks one of the qualities of good money—stability of value. It is no longer acceptable as a store of value; and it becomes an unsuitable standard of deferred payments. We didn’t have a lot of clothes or toys, but my mother always made sure we had enough to eat.Her love and devotion for my brother and me made our lack of material possessionsseem insignificant. I grew up poor in material things but rich in love.Since my father was never around long enough to teach me physical things or to playgames with me, I didn’t succeed in any competitive sport. They impose their own living conditions on the people who inhabit them. City—dwellers are obliged by their environment to adopt a wholly unnatural way of life. They lose touch with the land and rhythm of nature. It is possible to live such an air-conditioned existence in a large city that you are barely conscious of the seasons. A few flowers in a public park (if you have the time to visit it) may remind you that it is spring or summer. A few leaves clinging to the pavement may remind you that it is autumn. Beyond that, what is going on in nature seems totally irrelevant. All the simple good things of life like sunshine and fresh air are at a premium(奇缺的,十分需要的). Tall buildings blot out the sun.Traffic fumes pollute the atmosphere.Even the distinction between day and night is lost. The flow of traffic goes on unceasingly and the noise never stops.1. So he had to learn many humble skills in order to make his living in his youth. In fact he did all sorts of simple jobs and he did them well. And he learnt about music, which was later to become very important to him. However, as we all know, hard simple work need notto be a bad training for his later life. By the time he was thirty. With help from his tutor, Lao Dan, Confucius had become a respected teacher. He had mastered the "six ancient skills". So he started to become famous. As he became well-known, many states wanted him to be a senior official for them. But Confucius refused their offers and was happy to work on his ideas in his hometown of Qufu. In fact, he did not accept high office until he was over fifty years of age, which was quite old in those days.1. Confucius didn't accept high office until he was .A. almost fifty years oldB. about fifty years oldC. sixty years oldD. over fifty years oldPassage 4A survey has shown that people have stopped believing both the media and politicians. A similar survey carried out 5 years ago showed that 50% of people thought that what politicians said wasusually not true, and that 35% of people thought that what they saw on the television or read in newspapers was not true. Now both those figures have increased sharply, to 80% of people not believing politicians and 70% not believing the television or newspapers. Experts think that these figures are not going to come down in the near future.Stories about politicians and journalists taking money from businessmen have caused the public to stop trusting them. Also politicians keep making promises that they do not keep. Mr. Smith of York said, ‘When the politicians make new laws, hey only help their friends, not people like me’. Mrs. Marley of Leeds said,’ the newspapers and television are not interested in what is true; they are only interested in money for advertising.’It has got worse recently as more people can get news from the Internet and learn if the journalists and politicians are telling the truth or not. What can our politicians and journalists do? The only answer is to be more hones.1.The number of people believing politicians and journalists has__________.A.increasedB.not changedC.decreased2.Experts think this problem____________.A.will get better soonB.will not get better soonC.will get worse soon3.Stories say businessmen give money to ___________.A.politiciansB.politicians and journalistsC.journalists4.Mr. Smith thinks politicians make laws_____________.A.to help their friendsB.to help himC.to help everybody5.People can now check stories using _____________.A.the newspapersB.the televisionC.the InternetPassage 5No work or lack of work is becoming a major social problem in the world. It is part of our daily routine as it takes up one half of our waking life. If we don’t have work or if we have unsatisfactory work, then our lives are likely to be miserable and empty. It is in this respect that certain industrialized countries now have a particular problem. Out of a working population of about 25 million, at least 3 million are unemployed. This represents just under 10%of the workforce. It is a terrible waste. Related to the problems mentioned above is the difficulty of finding a good job worthy of one's qualifications. Only a small minority of people ever make it to university. Therefore only a very small percentage of people have the opportunity to qualify for the top jobs or for truly professional careers. Yet increasingly, more and more graduates fail to find work. For many of us who have always enjoyed having a satisfying job, it is hard to imagine the misery of those who are permanently out of work. Long term unemployment is similar to a disease. The unemployed find it difficult to find accommodation or to pay for accommodation, and without an address, it is difficult to claim benefits. The problems of unpleasant work or no work are likely to get worse before they get better. It will be something that the next century in particular must take very seriously.1. Work is part of our daily routine because it takes up_______.A. one half of our liveB. one third of our lifeC. one half of our working hoursD. one half of our waking life2. 20072007年英语考试指导纲要分析

语块包括固定的短语(如by the way, upside down)、固定搭配(如 incoming call, room service等)等。
