It is the most popular gemstone and because of its extreme 【C1】______(hard), it is also used for various industrial purposes. Scientists are still 【C2】______(sure)of the exact process by which diamonds are naturally formed, but it is certain that both extreme heat and enormous pressure are needed. It is, therefore, likely that diamonds were formed far【C3】be______the Earth's surface where these conditions exist. The first synthetic diamonds were successfully produced in the 1950s, but the best and largest stones arestill those created by nature. The word ' diamond' comes from the Greek ' adamas' , which means invincible, but the first definite reference to diamonds occurs in Roman literature of the first century A. D. The diamonds known to the Romans came from India, which was the only 【C4】______(supply)of the stones until the eighteenth century. In 1762, diamonds were discovered in Brazil, and then in 1866 in South Africa, the main source of diamonds in the world today. The idea that men should give diamonds to the women they 【C5】______is quite new. It was invented in the last century by De Beers, the company that owns the South African diamond mines. The idea that 'diamonds are forever' does not hold water either. Although diamonds are very hard, they can be【C6】dam______. The largest of all known diamonds was the Cullinan. It was【C7】disc______in South Africa in 1905 and given to Edward VII, king of Great Britain. It was cut into smaller stones, the largest of which—and still the largest cut diamond in 【C8】______(exist)—is called the Star of Africa. There have been a lot of diamond thefts in recent years, but scientists can now mark stones to show who own them. Usually this mark is 【C9】______(visible), so thieves can't tell if a diamond is marked. 【C10】O______the people who know how to make the mark appear can tell whether a diamond is marked or not.46 【C1】47 【C2】48 【C3】49 【C4】50 【C5】51 【C6】52 【C7】53 【C8】54 【C9】55 【C10】Section A55 Are there really those who are night people and those who are day people, or is that simply a routine that can be changed? Scientists are conducting various studies designed to discover definitive answers to these questions and have come up with some veryinteresting results. Approximately 80% of people are in the middle of the day/ night spectrum. They only slightly favour one side or the other and might shift between the two according to circumstances. It is starting to look like the remaining 20% are what could be termed 'extremes'. Around 10% are extreme night people or ENP, and the other 10% are extreme day people or EDP. The ENP do not achieve their top performance levels until around late afternoon, becoming very alert and productive around six in the evening. The EDP are the complete opposite. They clearly get going in the morning and hit their peak around noon. All of this is caused by what are called ' circadian rhythms' which is basically a 24-hour cycle that governs the transition from waking to sleeping and back again. If someone wants to increase their productivity then it is useful to determine with certainty where they are in this spectrum. But how do they do that? Circadian rhythm works by regulating body temperatures and hormones. The two major hormones are ' melatonin' and ' Cortisol'. The former increases just before it is time to sleep and the latter increases just before the first moves back to consciousness. Body temperatures go down through the night, the core body heat at its lowest in the middle of the night, and increase to wake a person up. Therefore, when these chemical changes are occurring helps to determine whether someone is a night person or a dayperson. So by monitoring those changes scientists are a-ble to determine a person's natural tendencies. In most people, however, those tendencies are not static. They keep changing as people age and can also be affected by social changes. As people get older they require less sleep so they produce lower amounts of hormone. Travel and work affect how people experience the need for sleep. The demands of the university life are very different from the demands that most middle-aged adults deal with on a day-to-day basis. Ultimately people need to monitor themselves, how they feel and how well they perform. Working at night and sleeping late might work right now, but later it may just turn out to be exactly the reverse. Questions 56 -60 Decide the following statements are true(T)or false(F)according to the passage.56 The ENP are productive after six in the evening whereas the EDP are most productive at noon. ( )(A)TRUE(B)FALSE57 Most people are classified either as extreme day people or extreme night people.( ) (A)TRUE(B)FALSE58 Circadian rhythm is a biological rhythm that is more or less synchronized with a 24-hour cycle. So many of us look back at our own college years and realize what we could have done differently to make the most of them. While we can't go back, we certainly can offer our sons and daughters our best advice to help them make the right choices in college. Hopefully, they will have fewer regrets than we do. Following are five guidelines parents can share with their college-bound kids to putthe whole experience in perspective.【B1】______That limits our ability to be decision makers who can positively impact our community. So it's on you to change that and make a difference by ensuring your education is your first priority. As soon as you arrive on campus, there will be competing interests. Feel free to check them out but always remember that you are there first and foremost for your education. Go to class prepared and on time. Be engaged during class. Make sure your professor knows you and realizes that you care. 【B2】______Do what you say you will do and, if you can't, own up to it early and communicate clearly. But being responsible isn't just about meeting your commitments: it is also about taking care of you, your body, and your friends. For example, more than 1 , 800 college students die annually from alcohol-related injuries. Look out for yourself and other people. Make moderate, sensible decisions so you aren't reeling from the consequences later. 【B3】______Don't let fear prevent you from taking advantage of them. There may never be so much time or as many resources devoted to your betterment again in your life. Say yes to opportunities that will help you grow. 【B4】______One of the most powerful growth opportunities is being a mentor. Early on, find someone on campus who you feel can help you grow and develop a relationship with him or her. Also find someone for you to mentor. You will reinforce and enrich your own learning experience by teaching someone else. 【B5】______Resist that urge. As Jocelyn Negron-Rios, a mother of two,who is currently completing her degree, advises, " No matter how difficult it seems, keep at it because however insurmountable it feels now multiply that by 10, 000 and that is how it feels when you are in your thirties with a full-time job and a family and are trying to pursue a degree. "Questions 61 -65Complete the article with the following sentences. There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use.A. There are many layers of responsibility.B. Incredible opportunities will present themselves: studying abroad, interning at a unique place, trying new things.G. It is natural to occasionally feel you want to quit, when it makes more sense to you to go find a full-time job.Section C65 Some people may choose to live on water for the pleasure and enjoyment of havinga home that is different from the homes of most others. Others live on water because they have nowhere else to live. Some people work on or close to the water, so they make their homes nearby. Throughout history, people have lived on water as a protection from enemies, wild animals, and flooding. In many parts of the Far East, people live on boats. These floating homes are often tied up close together by the banks of large rivers or in a harbor. People can jump up from boat to boat without getting wet. Babies and young children sometimes have a block of wood tied to their backs so they will float if they fall in the water. Some of the floating homes were sailboats used for fishing. They are now too old to sail, so they are used as houseboats instead. When people go ashore, they walk over a small wooden bridge called a gangplank which stretches from the boats to dry land. Many houseboats in Kashmir in northern India are wooden houses with more than one story built on a wooden hull. The people that live in these houseboats use smaller boats to row from their homes to shore. When boat-dwellers migrate from one place to another they often take their homes with them. Many work in their boats as well as eat, sleep, relax, play, and raise their families there. The Bajau people—often called sea gypsies or pirates live on boats and travel between islands in Southeast Asia. The Bajau live on small sailing boats called lipas which are less than 26 feet long. A frame of poles, which extends over the sides of the boat, is covered with woven rushes. The boat is kept steady by outriggers, which are long, stabilizing poles at each side.In the port of Hong Kong, many people live on houseboats. Many families cannot afford to buy houses on land and even some who are wealthy prefer to live on boats. Most boats are now powered by motor, but a few are sailboats. The harbor is crowded with boats, which have canvas or wooden roofs to protect people from the sun. Washing is dried over the flat roofs that are even strong enough to walk on.A sampan—used as a home by poor people—is a much smaller boat, which can be used for catching fish or as a ferryboat to take people across the water. Sampans often havecanvas covers to give protection from rain and sun. In most parts of the Far East, sampans have only one mast, but in the Hong Kong, some have two.Questions 66 -70Answer the following questions according to the passage.66 What are the main reasons that people choose to live on water apart from pleasure or work?67 What do some Far East boat dwellers do to guarantee the safety of their children?68 Why are the Bajau people called sea gypsies or pirates?69 Why do a lot of people in Hong Kong live on boats?70 How do people living on sampans keep themselves from rain and sun?Section D70 When you open the business section of any newspaper at the end of the year, all the reports seem to be about results for the fiscal year. But just like a school year or lunar year, the fiscal year is a little different from the regular calendaryear. A fiscal year is a 12-month period that records the annual financial reports for businesses, organisations and governments. These records give shareholders and analysts information on how well the businesses are doing. They are also necessary because they help investors and other companies prepare for the future. All this preparation helps the economy continue to run smoothly. Starbucks Corp. released the record of its fourth fiscal quarter and the full fiscal year, which ended Oct. 1, on Nov. 16. "The record results we reported today for the fourth quarter and the full fiscalyear are a testament to the overall health and strength of our global business," commented Troy Alstead, CFO. "The momentum we have built throughout the year continued in the fourth quarter, with the strength of same store sales growth demonstrating that our product innovation and overall store experience are resonating extremely well with our customers. As a result of the strong finish to fiscal 2011, Starbucks entered the new fiscal year well positioned to continue pursuing significant profitable growth opportunities. " The start date of the fiscal year is different in different businesses and countries. So, for example , the U. S. government begins its fiscal year Oct. 1 and the Australian government begins its July 1. Thailand starts its fiscal year in September. The United Kingdom and India have chosen a different fiscal-year system. In these countries, the fiscal year varies from April to March. In China, the fiscal year starts Jan. 2 and ends Dec.31. France, Italy, Germany, Russia use the same fiscal year as China. Fiscal years don't always start from January and end in December, however. When a business opens, it decides what month will start its fiscal year. In fact, many businesses don't choose to follow the regular calendar year for their fiscal year because December is usually a very busy time. In the United Kingdom, many companies have continued to use the government fiscal year, which expires March 31, since they privatized. Nonetheless, the fiscal year and calendar year are the same in about over 60 percent of companies in the United States and the majority of businesses in England. In each fiscal year there are four quarters. Each is three months long and is often called a fiscal quarter. Businesses usually report results for each fiscal quarter as well as annual results for their fiscal year. Questions 71 -75Complete the summary with words from the passage, changing the form where necessary, with only one word for each blank. The most important question remains: will it be ecologically responsible and sustainable? The responsibility clearly rests with ourselves to care for an environmental and cultural diversity which historically we have used merely to serve our needs—and our needs only. Ecotourism, as a model, process and ethic, offers an opportunity to put respect for our earth into practice in a way that all people can enjoy its beauty and benefits.Section B87 只要别太晚,我不介意你推迟做出决定。

As you've no doubt realized, we have people here from years one to three and we find that as most of the work is in small groups or individually based. This works out pretty well, even though we are a b it shor t of space. Now I'm going to go through some administrative staff and then we'll get on to project planning. So first of all, we are in the studio here every afternoon except one. So we do have a sort of base, which is quite n ice, bu t once a week we have to move out. That's into Room 51 which is on Thursdays. It's a bit of a nuisance because it's not as big as in here. But we'll manage somehow and on Fridays you can use the big space over the back of the hall which is called the gallery for private study if you want to spread out a bit. That's only on Fridays, though, I'm afraid. Now as far as extra courses go, you should have already selected these and the days for them are as follows: Monday is the only day when the dock room is free, so that's photography. Tuesdays John Howard comes in here to take sessions on print technology. And Wednesday I'm here for model making. Now if you haven't selected your options for this term, you need to get a move on. When we finish now, I'll be showing you around the rest of the department and you can get a form from the academic secretary on the way. Oh, you also need to get one if you want to do the full day course which is on Saturdays on computer-aided design, but that only applies to your third year students of course. And do you know where the office is? Now that's nearly all except a reminder to you all that we provide all the equipment you need for practical work, including card and photographic papers. But you must bring your own stationery. You should have proper notebooks and we don't expect to have to find bits of paper for you to make notes on when you forget them. And lastly about absence. If you're not well, if it's just a couple of days, you can phone the administration assistant and ask him to pass the message on to this department. If it's more than a couple of days, you mustsend a written explanation to the department head, otherwise you could be penalized in your course grade for absence without permission. Ok, well, you've been warned. Now, for you new guys, let's go and look around the rest of the place. The rest of you, no doubt, have things to be getting on with.2.the Gallery3.Photography4.Print Technology5.Model-making6.academic secretary7.third-year8.stationery/notebooks9.the administration assistant10.the Department HeadPart ⅡVo c abu l a r y, Grammar andThere are 15 incomplete sentences in this section. It’s hard to pin down why they provoke such violent emotion; once it was simply because they lied—you don’t turn up for the weekly Wednesday ferry to find that actually it goes on Tuesdays. Nowadays they are carefully researched, the information is generally true, and the maps are accurate.(61) ______ Arrive in a place and out comes the book: Places to Stay, Things to See, Getting Around, Places to Eat—all of which is undeniably useful. It all started in 1972 when, bored with Britain, they see off for Australia. They arrived in Sydney three months later with 27 cents between them. Tony sold his camera, then sat down and wrote about the trip. They put the pages together and took it around the local bookshops and one of the bookshops sold thousands of copies.(63) ______Their 200-odd guidebooks cover nearly everywhere and there are phrasebooks, atlases, walking guides. They sell more than three million books a year and employ around 200 people. The Lonely Planet website is visited a million times a day and the Wheelers have replaced the van with a red Ferrari.(64) ______ ‘My children have travelled all over the world so they’re aware of a lot of things,’ says Maureen and Tony agrees. ‘It helps you grow up a lot, jus t knowing how other people live and what happens in their countries. Secondly, being on your own, having to make your way from one place to the next and work out how you do that, gives you a self-sufficiency that I think is very important.’(65) ______Ther e are people who say that by encouraging people to go places they’re destroying them-an accusation they both deny, claiming that people would go there anyway. They admit that none of this is bad for business, ‘All the publicity has sold our books.’Questions 61-65 Complete the article with the following sentences. Because of its centrality as well as restricted access, the palace was called the Forbidden City, It was built from 1406 to 1420 by the third emperor of the Ming dynasty, the Yongle Emperor who, upon usurping the throne, determined to move his capital northward from Nanjing to Beijing. The Ming dynasty fell to the Manchu Qing in 1644 and in 1911 the Qing dynasty wasoverthrown by the republican revolutionaries. During nearly six hundred years, twenty-four emperors lived in and ruled from this palace. The Forbidden City is surrounded by 10-metre-high walls and a 52-meter-wide moat. Measuring 961 meters from north to south and 753 meters from east to west, it covers an area of 1110000 square meters. Each of the four sides is pierced by a gate: the Meridian Gate (Wu men) on the south, the Gate of Divine Prowess(Shenwu men) on the north, the Eastern and Western Prosperity Gates (Donghua men and Xihua men).Once inside, visitors will see a succession of halls and palaces spreading out on either side of an invisible central axis. The buildings’ glowing yellow roofs levitating above vermilion walls is a magnif icent sight. The painted ridges and carved beams all contribute to the sumptuous effect.Known as the Outer Court, the southern portion of the Forbidden City centers on three main halls -- Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihedian),Hall of Central Harmony (Zhonghedian),and Hall of Preserving Harmony (Baohedian). It was here in the Outer Court that the emperor held court and conducted grand audiences. Mirroring this arrangement is the Inner Court comprising the northern portion of the Forbidden City. The Inner Court is comprised of not only the residences of the emperor and his consorts but also venues for religious rituals and administrative activities. In total, the buildings of the two courts account for an area of some 163000 square meters. These were precisely designed in accordance with a code of architectural hierarchy, which designated specific features to reflect the paramount authority and status of the emperor. No ordinary mortal would have been allowed or would even have dared to come within close proximityto these buildings. The Forbidden City, the culmination of the two-thousand-year development of classical Chinese and East Asian architecture, has been influential in the subsequent development of Chinese architecture, as well as providing inspiration for many artistic works.Questions 66-7066. Why was the Palace given the name as “The Forbidden City”?67. Who was the first emperor that lived in the Palace?68. How long is the Forbidden City?69. What is the total area of the Forbidden City?70. What is the main function of the Inner Court of the Forbidden City?Section D (10 marks) Questions 71-75 are based on the following passage.Ancient Greeks thought the brain wasn’t the basis for intellect. It was the home for the soul. They believed that the process of thinking happened somewhere near lungs. The brain wasn’t seen as an organ of intellect and thought until the 17th and 18th centuries. In order to measure intelligence, the IQ test, or the intelligence quotient test, was invented. The Standford-Binet Intelligence Scale was created in Paris in the early 1900s. The scale was used in Alfred Binet’s efforts to educate children with learning difficulties. Those with scores less than their respective ages were considered mentally challenged. The MENSA IQ test has also become popular. A person who scores 150 or higher on this test is considered to have exceptional intelligence. More than 10,000 people take the test every year. Some see IQ tests as an assessment of an individu al’s problem-solving skills, rather than general intelligence. For example, an individual may have high analytical intelligence that is genetic. This widely held view promoted many prejudiced ideas. Since the IQ test was created from the point of view of Europeans, people of other races scored comparatively lower. Research suggests that intelligence depends on culture and class. Tests given by the U.S. military showed that blacks scored lower than whites. The difference in scores was attributed to class and education levels, not genetic factors. Black children adopted into wealthier families scored significantly higher than low-income blacks. Studies have shown that children who grow in a positive learning environment score higher on the IQ tests. Having good nutrition can also affect the scores.A new type of IQ test has surfaced later on. It's called the EI test, or the emotional intelligence test. The test gauges the individual’s ability to manage his or her emotions. Developed by Daniel Goleman, the test also measures how much self-awareness an individual has. Knowledge and emotional intelligence are different, experts say. A person with high emotional intelligence is able to better understand the feelings of others. Thus, they are better maintaining various relationships. Low emotional intelligence can affect intelligence. Studies have shown that emotional intelligence is connected with memory and concentration. Individuals with low emotional intelligence have more aggressiveness and less self-control. These factors can dramatically reduce IQ scores by as much as 25 percent.Questions 71-75 Complete the summary with only one word for each blank from the passage, changing the form where necessary.Since the early 1900s, scientists have attempted to gauge the intelligence of people. Alfred Binet’s intelligence scale and the MENS IQ test have been used frequently over the past centuries in 71.________ intelligence. Some studies suggest that the tests aren’t necessarily a flawless benchmark, arguing that it 72._______ only a person’s problem-solving skills. Others think that intelligence is 73._______ and it varies among races. New findings point to culture, class, education levels and environment as more important intelligence predictors 74._______ genetics. A new test that measures the emotional intelligence, the ability to monitor one’s emotions, has emerged. Recent findings reveal that one’s emotional intelligence can affect one’s IQ test 75._______.Part V Translation (15 marks)Section A (5 marks) Translate the following paragraph into Chinese.76. Opera is an art that brings music, singing, and drama together on stage. The first operas were performed in Italy in the early 1600s. These operas were based on ancient Greek myths and accompanied by simple melodies. Some of the best lessons available to us can come outside of the classroom in the form of a mentor.C. This could have an enormous social impact.D. Only 13% of Latino adults hold a College degree.E. In a few decades, parents may be able to choose many genetic characteristics of their children.F. A fiscal year is a 12-month period used for calculating financial reports 【R1】______in businesses and other organisations.

Scientists are conducting various studies designed to discover definitive answers to these questions and have come up with some very interesting results.Approximately 80% of people are in the middle of the day/ night spectrum. They only slightly favour one side or the other and might shift between the two according to circumstances. It is starting to look like the remaining 20% are what could be termed'extremes'. Measuring 961 meters from north to south and 753 meters from east to west, it covers an area of 1110000square meters. The buildings‟ glowing yellow roofs levitating above vermilion walls is a magnificent sight. The painted ridges and carved beams all contribute to the sumptuous effect.Known as the Outer Court, the southern portion of the Forbidden City centers on three main halls -- Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihedian), Hall of Central Harmony (Zhonghedian),and Hall of Preserving Harmony (Baohedian). No ordinary mortal would have been allowed or would even have dared to come within close proximity to these buildings. The Forbidden City, the culmination of the two-thousand-year development of classical Chinese and East Asian architecture, has been influential in the subsequent development of Chinese architecture, as well as providing inspiration for many artistic works.Questions 66-7066. What is the total area of the Forbidden City?70. What is the main function of the Inner Court of the Forbidden City?Section D (10 marks) Questions 71-75 are based on the following passage.Ancient Greeks thought the brain wasn‟t the basis for intellect. It was the home for the soul. They believed that the process of thinking happened somewhere near lungs. The brain wasn‟t seen as an organ of intellect and thought until the 17th and 18th centuries. In order to measure intelligence, the IQ test, or the intelligence quotient test, was invented. The Standford-Binet Intelligence Scale was created in Paris in the early 1900s. The scale was used in Alfred Binet‟s efforts to educate children with learning difficulties. Those with scores less than their respective ages were considered mentally challenged. The MENSA IQ test has also become popular. A person who scores 150 or higher on this test is considered to have exceptional intelligence. More than 10,000 people take the test every year. Some see IQ tests as an assessment of an individual‟s probl em-solving skills, rather than general intelligence. For example, an individual may have high analytical intelligence that is genetic. This widely held view promoted many prejudiced ideas. Since the IQ test was created from the point of view of Europeans, people of other races scored comparatively lower.Research suggests that intelligence depends on culture and class. Tests given by the U.S. military showed that blacks scored lower than whites. The difference in scores was attributed to class and education levels, not genetic factors. Black children adopted into wealthier families scored significantly higher than low-income blacks. Studies have shown that children who grow in apositive learning environment score higher on the IQ tests. Having good nutrition can also affect the scores.A new type of IQ test has surfaced later on. It's called the EI test, or the emotional intelligence test. The test gauges the individual‟s ability to manage his or her emotions. Alfred Binet‟s intelligence scale and the MENS IQ test have been used frequently over the past centuries in 71.________ intelligence. Others think that intelligence is 73._______ and it varies among races. New findings point to culture, class, education levels and environment as more important intelligence predictors 74._______ genetics. A new test t hat measures the emotional intelligence, the ability to monitor one‟s emotions, has emerged.
