Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)While income worry is a rather common problem of the aged, loneliness is another problem that aged parents may face. Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness, a large geographical distance between parents and their children is the major one. This phenomenon is commonly known as "Empty Nest Syndrome".In order to seek better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home. Their parents spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of themselves, in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them. The fact that most of these young people have gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries. Whatever the case, it has been noted that the values they hold do not necessarily match what they actually do. Thisgeographical and cultural distance also prevents the grown-up children from providing response in time for their aged parents living by themselves. The situation in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been described as "distant parent phenomenon", which is common both in developed countries and in developing countries. Our society has not yet been well prepared for "Empty Nest Syndrome".66. According to the passage, the loneliness of aged parents is mainly caused by ______.A. their earlier experience of feeling lonelyB. the unfavorable living conditions in their native countriesC. the common worry about their incomeD. the geographical distance between parents and children67. Many young people have gone abroad, leaving their aged parents behind, to _______.A. live in the countries with more moneyB. seek a better place for their aged parentsC. continue their studies abroadD. realize their dreams in foreign countries68. If young people go abroad, ______.A. they do not hold to the value of duty at allB. they can give some help to their parents back homeC. they cannot do what they should for their parentsD. they believe what they actually do is right69. From the last paragraph, we can infer that ______.A. the situations in the developed and developing countries are differentB. "Empty Nest Syndrome" has arrived unexpectedly in our societyC. children will become independent as soon as they go abroadD. the aged parents are not fully prepared for "Empty Nest Syndrome"( B )(You may read the questions first.)70. According to the passage, teachers would be working with students _______________.A. immediately after they apply for the positionB. in the National City Center across ChinaC. 21---25 hours a week even on national holidaysD. ranging from kindergarten students to teenagers71. We can conclude that teachers admitted by this school group are allowed to ____________.A. get a cash reward for good performanceB. live in the north of Hong KongC. see a doctor for freeD. visit a variety of local schools(C)Received cooperative wisdom maintains that we should all accept the stimulating power of “co-working” and “hive offices’, where we are elbow-to-elbow with our colleagues. Privacy, it is claimed, stifles(扼杀)creativity.A study from the University of Sydney begs to differ. Researchers surveyed more than 40,000 office workers in 303 companies worldwide and found that the plus sides of an open-plan office --- ideas sharing and friendship, are far overtaken by the downsides --- disruption and noise pollution. When the first open-plan office, the Larkin Administration Building in New York, opened in 1906, all conversation was banned and those in positions of power had separate spaces. Now that corner offices are seen as expensive, your desk neighbor is just as likely to be your boss as an intern. This means permanently being on your best behavior and feeling the pressure to make small talk every time your eyes meet over the mouse pad.In a survey of American workers by , “noisy colleagues” were cited as the No.1 workplace disruption, above phone calls and social media. A 2010 study from the University of California found that it takes the average worker 25 minutes to get back into the flow of a task after an interruption. This suggests that, if you’re interrupted 16 times during an eight-hour day, you may as well have stayed in bed.Professor Cary Cooper, an expert on occupational stress form Lancaster University, suggeststhe help of symbolism. “Make it common knowledge that, if you fly a red flag above your desk, it means you are working on something detailed and need peace and quiet,” he says. “A white flag means that you are available.”On internet forums(论坛), dissatisfied desk colleagues exchange tips on how to make your workspace as uninviting as possible. These include: never having a sweet jar or new toys on your desk and, if you have a “guest”chair, piling it with papers so that interrupters have nowhere to sit. You can even set up fake calendar alerts to go off at intervals in case you need to make an escape. The last aid is unpopularity; be rude, cold and unhelpful until colleagues are terrified to come near you. It may not even come to that. Who would really want to approach a flag-waving crazy guy in a ridiculous hat?74. The researchers from the University of Sydney will agree that ____________.A. privacy will prevent creativityB. an open-plan office has stimulating powerC. an open-plan office makes people less productiveD. an open-plan office is beneficial in terms of idea sharing75. Which of the following descriptions about a modern open-plan office is NOT TRUE?A. You are more likely to make small talks with colleagues.B. You are supposed to behave yourself most of the time.C. You will probably sit along aside your boss.D. You will have more peace and quiet.76. All the following are suggestions to reduce interruption in an office EXCEPT __________.A. making workplace uninvitingB. making more private phone callsC. turning to symbolism for helpD. making oneself unpopular among colleagues77. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. A Report Issued by the University of SydneyB. Noisy Colleagues Cited as No. 1 Office DisruptionC. Open-Plan Office Stimulating ProductivityD. How to Survive in An Open-Plan OfficeSection DDirections:Read the following passage and then complete the statements and answer the questions on the answer sheet.Since humans first domesticated cats and dogs, these furry friends have taken on increasingly important roles in people’s lives. As wild animals, dogs and cats first entered human life in the role of hunting animals and guardians, then as companions and finally as family members. Now, a legal battle is under way that could make these animals legal citizens. The first potential evidence of dog domestication dates back to 30,000 B.C. Before they were pets, dogs helped humans hunt, and cats helped guard grain supplier by keeping rats and mice away. But the Middle Ages were a grim period for cats and dogs. Considered agents of Satan, millions of black cats were killed throughout Europe in 1233. People regarded animals as soulless machines and did experiments on living dogs. It wasn’t until the late 1800s and early 1900s that dogs and cats’ condition improved. People brought cats and dogs indoors where they treated them as family members.“As human relationships are becoming more virtual, it’s creating an emotional emptiness in our lives,” said David Grimm, a science journalist. “Cats and dogs keep us anchored to the real world.”Today, there are animal anti-cruelty laws in all 50 U.S. states, with penalties that include fines and prison time. Dogs and cats can even inherit money, but they’re still considered property. Now, a growing effort seeks to grant personhood to animals, including cats and dogs. Driving this movement is an increasing awareness of animal intelligence and their emotional capabilities. In recent years, researchers have found that dogs can understand pointing---an ability that chimpanzees lack---and are capable of empathy and even abstract thinking.Cats are much harder to study, because as any cat owner knows, it’s tough to get a cat to do what it’s told. However, cats are known to be intelligent creatures, too.Yet not everyone supports the push to treat animals as fellow citizens. Scientists worry that recognizing pets as legal persons could make it impossible to use animals in research. Farmers are also concerned that if dogs and cats were considered ‘people’, cows and chickens could be next----a move that put an end to the livestock industry.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 10 WORDS)78. When cats and dogs first entered human life, what did they serve as?________________________________________________________________________.79. For a period of time in history, black cats were killed in large numbers due to the popularbelief among people that _________________________________________.80.
