Most painters discover a style of painting that suits them and stick to that, especially if people admire their pictures. But Picasso, the great Spanish painter, was like a man who had not yet found his own particular style of painting. He kept
on struggling to find the perfect expression till his death in 1973.
Some of Picasso's paintings are rich, soft colored and beautiful. Others are ugly and cruel and strange. But such paintings allow us to imagine things for ourselves. They force us to say to ourselves, "What does he see that makes him paint like that?" And we begin to look beneath the surface of the things we see.
Picasso painted thousands of pictures in different styles. Sometimes he painted the natural look of things. Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces. He showed us what the mind knows as well as what the eye sees.
At the age of 90 he remained as curious about the world as he had been when he was young.
That's why people have called him "the youngest painter in the world..

The blues was born on the Mississippi River Delta in the early 1900s. After the Civil War, the slaves(奴隶) were free but life was still not easy. They had to find
new work. In the south, work camps were formed. Black people from these camps worked on farms and built up the Mississippi River banks. During the week, the people worked long and hard. They often lived alone, without their families, far from home. On the weekends, the workers got together at picnics or drinking places. Traveling black musicians with guitars entertained them. The musicians sang songs about the difficult life of the workers. These songs were called the blues.
If you have the blues, it means you feel very sad. But blues songs were not always sad. Some of them were happy and many of them were funny.
Early blues singers often had very interesting names like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Howlin Wolf. Sometimes, the blues singers had song contests. Each singer sang new words or a new style of the blues song. They made up the music as they played. In this way they created new music. This is called improvisation. Later, improvisation became a very important part of Jazz music.
The blues began in the country in the south. As blacks moved into the big cities to work, the blues went with them. There, they sang about life in the cities. W.

Text 10
W:Here, let's welcome John Le Carre, whose books are best-sellers around the world. He's going to talk about his interest in the English language.
M:Thank you. Well, I began falling in love with English language when I was really quite young, as a child. I mean all children fall in love with the sound of their native language. And then, I think I hated learning English when I was 13 or 14 years old. What happened was that I had a troubled childhood. I ran away from school and finally left England and escaped to Switzerland. At the age of 16 or so, I gave up English. For a while when I had to speak it, I pretended to speak like a foreigner.
I buried myself entirely in German; I wanted only to read German, think in German, and speak in German. It really was a kind of escape from my own country. When I realized that I wanted to write and that writing was what I wanted to do most in life, 1 came back to English. Though I knew French and German, I soon found myself forgetting them completely. The pleasures and the richness of English are striking.
