Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be e asy; there’s no
need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children’s curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, “Now that we’re finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”
After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen
a grasshopper (蚱蜢) eat leaves? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?”
This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours.
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30
years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical(符合逻辑的), complete and creative answers.
Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in
a science discussion, don’t jump in with “That’s right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That’s interesting” or “I’d never thought of it that way before”, or coming up with more questions or ideas.
Never push a child to “Think”. It doesn’t make sense, for children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What’s more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will
be a smaller target (目标) for your disagreement.
Lastly, show; don’t tell. Real-life impressions of nature are
far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass(放大镜), and they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates (蒸发), set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.
29. According to the passage, children are natural scientists, and to raise their interest, the most important thing for adults to do
is .
A. to let them see the world around
B. to share the children’s curiosity
C. to explain difficult phrases about science
D. to supply the children with lab equipment
30. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the word “lists” could best be replaced by .
A. any questions
B. any problems
C. questions from textbooks
D. any number of
questions
31. According to the passage, children can answer questions in a more logical, complete and creative way if adults .
A. ask them to answer quickly
B. wait for one or two seconds after a question
C. tell them to answer the next day
D. wait at least for three seconds after a question
32. The author mentions all of the following techniques for adults to share with their children’s curiosity except that adults should .
A. tell their children stories instead of reciting (背诵)
facts
B. offer their children chances to see things for themselves
C. be patient enough when their children answer questions
D. encourage their children to ask questions of their own
D
American culture is unique because it is formed and developed under certain conditions. The major factors contributing to the making of this new nation and the forming of a new culture are the hard environment, ethnic diversity (多样性;差异) and plural religion, which is quite different from other nations in the world. What
is more, these elements are still influencing the American culture.
The early immigrants who were English Puritans settled down in northeast part of America from 1607 to 1892. Frontiers were pushed further west. The frontiersmen looked for a land of rich resources and a land of promise, opportunity and freedom. Actually they looked for a better life. So individualism(个人主义), self-reliance, and equality of opportunity have perhaps been the values most closely associated with the frontier heritage of America.
In history, people from different countries in the world rushed to America three times. They brought their own culture to America and later on, different cultures were mixed together. Thus the unique American culture was formed, a common cultural life with commonly shared values.
The fundamental American belief in individual freedom and the fight of individuals to practice their own religion is at the center of religious experience in the United States. The great diversity of ethnic backgrounds has produced religious pluralism(多元化); almost all of the religions of the world are now practiced in the United States.
Nowadays, we can see the continual influence of the three elements in the current American society. American family is typically parents and their unmarried children. Middle-aged and elderly people generally do not live with their married children. The people in America have a very strong desire to start a new life in a new place. Quite a number of people change residences every year. The average American moves fourteen times in his lifetime.
33. We can learn from this article that ________.
A. the population of the United States includes a large variety of ethnic groups
B. the early immigrants brought about the unique American
culture
C. people in the world once rushed to America because of its unique culture
D. the American family members don't get along well with each other
34. What's the author's attitude towards American culture?
A. He is critical of it.
B. He admires it very much.
C. He just states the facts.
D. He looks down upon it.
35. What might be the most suitable title of this article?
A. The Immigrants in America
B. Why American Culture is Unique
C. The Influence of American Culture
D. Plural Religion and American Culture

Autumn blues? Let the sunshine in.
Falling leaves, dead
flowers, cold winds, faint sunshine. 36 Spirits can be low.
People who suffer from "the autumn blues" often are extremely exhausted(疲倦的), lack energy, need more sleep, feel increased appetite and gain weight.
"The exact cause of this condition, often called seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder(SAD), is not known yet," says Chen Jue, associate professor(副教授)at Shanghai Mental Health Center, "But recent studies indicate that weather change is influential and strongly suggest that this condition is caused by changes in the availability (获得) of sunlight."
One theory is that with decreased exposure(暴露)to sunlight, the biological clock that controls mood, sleep, and hormones is delayed, running more slowly in winter. 37 Another theory is that brain chemicals that transmit(传输) information between nerves may be changed in
individuals with SAD. It is believed that exposure to light can correct these imbalances.
“ 38 Rememb er, spring always lives in your heart," Chen says.
Here are some tips to deal with autumn depression(沮丧,消沉).
·Go outdoors and get some sunlight.Move around.Fresh air and exercise improve the respiratory(呼吸)system and blood circulation (血液循环)and regulate(管理)the nervous system. Thus, exercise is calming and relieves(缓解)one's mood.
·Relax at work.Stretch and breathe deeply. Take a tea break. Think of your next vacation.
· 39 Chocolate and sugar raise the spirits.
·Look at bright colors, such as red a nd orange. Color
therapy(疗法)improves mood.
·Listen to your favorite music. You can dance to it, or just
lie on a cozy couch, reading a novel.
· 40 Blooming(开花) plants are cheering.
·Call friends or family when you feel lonely or depressed. Recall some happy memories.
A.Exposure to sunlight may reset(重新调整)the biological clock.
B.Decorate your room and work space with flowers.
C.It is a sad season, but you can try to make it happy.
D.That is the way you can use to lighten yourself.
E.Keep a chocolate bar in your pocket.
F.For many people late autumn can be a season of gloom and depression.
G.Autumn always gives us a beautiful scene.

书面表达
May I have your attention, please?
My topic today is about copying others’ homework. As we know, some students copy others’ homework. On one hand, we students have to do masses of homework both at home and at school. Sometimes
we do have some problems, too hard to work out. On the other hand, lazy and uninterested in their lessons, some students copy
others’homework not only to finish the assignments but also to please their teachers.
In a word, copying others’homework is a bad habit. For one thing, it’s against the school rules. Being students, we should be honest and work hard. If we have difficulties, we can turn to teachers and classmates for help. For another, copying o thers’homework too often, we will lose the ability that can help us to think.
Personally, in order to have a brighter future, we should try our best to be well-prepared at school. Let’s take action to prevent such bad behavior from spreading.
Thank you for your attention.

B
I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help
injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent.
I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by zxxk the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.
24.What is unavoidable in the author’s rescue work according to paragraph 1?
A.Efforts made in vain.
B.Getting injured in his work.
C.Feeling uncertain about his future.
D.Creatures forced out of their homes.
25.Why was the author called to Muttontown?
A.To rescue a woman.
B.To take care of a woman.
C.To look at a baby owl.
D.To cure a young owl.
26.What made the chick calm down?
A.A new nest.
B.Some food.
C.A recording.
D.Its parents.
27.How would the author feel about the outcome of the event?

Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.
Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.
It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.
“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”
Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.
Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats
Waller’s music for a dance party, “Just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our
thought s? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”
